A little over a year ago, Showtime announced that they were ordering a series – then known as Dexter: Origins, now known as Dexter: Original Sin – that would serve as a prequel series to their popular show Dexter, which finished its eight season initial run back in 2013, then recently came back for a new season (called Dexter: New Blood) that appeared to wrap things up for good… for the title character, anyway. Now Deadline reports that Patrick Gibson of Shadow and Bone has been cast to play a young Dexter Morgan in Dexter: Original Sin, with Christian Slater (Mr. Robot) joining him in the cast to play his dad, Harry Morgan, and Molly Brown (Senior Year) set to play Dexter’s younger sister, Debra Morgan.

Now, is this necessary? Showtime made it known in early 2023 that it wanted to expand its “Dexter” franchise with a sequel to 2021’s “Dexter: New Blood,” but this, pun fully intended, is overkill. Before that spinoff, another one arrives: “Dexter: Original Sin,” a ten-episode prequel series that centers on a young serial killer-in-training Dexter Morgan in early ’90s Miami. The series will premiere on Paramount+ with Showtime.

When it debuted in 2006, Showtime's "Dexter" was a pay cable exclusive. The darkly comic show about a Florida blood spatter analyst who doubled as a serial killer was part of Showtime's push towards HBO-level original programming, a wave of great (or at least initially great) content that also included Jenji Kohen's suburban drug dealer dramedy "Weeds," the smutty historical drama "The Tudors," and controversial lesbian soap "The L Word."
Fast forward nearly two decades, and Showtime looks a lot different. The streamer is now bundled in with Paramount+, and has been awkwardly retitled Paramount+ with Showtime. The last great Showtime hit bearing the premium channel's original name was "Yellowjackets," the great cannibal high schooler series that will be back for its third season. Lock your doors and turn on your TVs, because Dexter Morgan is about to make a killing on Netflix.
The Emmy-winning series Dexter is set to begin streaming in the US on June 19, almost two decades after he first stalked our screens. Over eight seasons airing from 2006-2013, the Michael C. Hall–led crime drama was known for delivering unexpected performances, killer surprises, and a whole lot of blood. And calling it a “crime drama” alone doesn’t do Dexter justice, because it could also be described as a dark comedy, psychological thriller, mystery noir, and police procedural — like its main character and arresting opening credits, it contains multitudes. Dexter earned four Emmys over the course of its run, while Hall was a five-time nominee for his chilling and unforgettable performance as Dexter Morgan, a full-time forensic analyst and part-time murderer.

Fans of Dexter will agree that Jennifer Carpenter’s Debra Morgan deserved better than her tragic fate in the series. Carpenter originally wanted Debra to die at the end of the series especially due to all the guilt from her and her brother’s actions. However, she was devastated by how the show actually executed her death in the last episode of the final season, Remembering the Monsters?.

Carpenter revealed that the scene made her realize that Dexter’s character was not the neat monster depicted in the show, but rather a very sick man in need of help. Michael C. Hall and Carpenter returned to their roles as the Morgan siblings in the standalone miniseries, Dexter: New Blood.

Madame Web filmmaker Sj Clarkson is both persistent and prolific. The British director has helmed at least 109 episodes of television from 2001 until now. She cut her teeth to the tune of 37 episodes on a British medical soap known as Doctors, but that experience eventually paved the way for the likes of Dexter, Orange Is the New Black and Succession. (Her first episode of Dexter ended with John Lithgow’s iconic line of, “Hello, Dexter Morgan.”)
In recent years, Clarkson’s efforts to mount projects on a massive scale have tested her patience, as her Naomi Watts-led Game of Thrones prequel pilot, Bloodmoon, didn’t go, nor did her version of Star Trek 4 in 2018. Nevertheless, Clarkson’s feature directorial debut, Madame Web, is now arriving in theaters on Feb. 14, and she never imagined that her first film would take place in a universe that’s related to Spider-Man.

Sometimes it’s hard to casually enjoy a television show or movie when there is so much critical analysis and even baggage attached to it. We want to go into something with a clean slate, a fresh canvas to which we can paint our own opinions without the influence of others. There’s perhaps no greater example of this than the final season of the megahit Showtime series Dexter.
Running from 2006 to 2013, this Michael C. Hall vehicle went toe to toe with other prestige dramas of the era like Breaking Bad, Mad Men, Boardwalk Empire, and more and still carved out a deservedly large audience. Dexter Morgan was an antihero unlike any of the others, a serial killer who was actually highly relatable as a father, a husband, and human being who desperately wanted to fit in with society much more than he had ever originally imagined.

Exclusive: Michael C. Hall has signed with CAA for representation.
Hall is best known for starring in Showtime’s award-winning series Dexter, and in HBO’s Six Feet Under. The two roles earned him a Golden Globe, three Screen Actors Guild Awards, and several Emmy Award nominations.
He recently reprised the role of Dexter Morgan in Dexter: New Blood, the limited series in which he starred and executive produced. Showtime is definitely interested in more Dexter series; it already said it is considering a Dexter prequel series about the Trinity Killer while also developing Dexter: Origins and the next chapter of Dexter: New Blood.
Hall’s stage career includes such Broadway performances as the emcee in the 1999 revival of Cabaret, directed by Sam Mendes; Hedwig in John Cameron Mitchell’s Hedwig and the Angry Inch; and John Jones in The Realistic Joneses opposite Toni Collette, Marisa Tomei, and Tracy Letts.

As long as humans have been passing down stories, those tales have included our capacity to transgress against each other. It’s a tradition literally as old as the Bible.
And beyond documenting how people break the rules that govern our evolving notions of society, we’re constantly fascinated by those charged with righting those wrongs. Whether it follows the detectives who investigate those crimes, those within the judicial system who determine the proper level of punishment, or the friends and family members left in the wake of these actions, this process has become the cornerstone of many of cultural touchstones.

When the original Dexter concluded in 2013 with the titular character relocated to the Pacific Northwest, many viewers didn’t like the way the crime drama ended.
When the series returned eight years later, the final episode was equally as disappointing. If a certain showrunner had had his way, Dexter fans would have been treated to a far more satisfying conclusion, and Dexter: New Blood would not have happened at all.

Last week, it was said that Showtime wouldn’t be ordering another season of the Dexter revival Dexter: New Blood – which made a lot of sense, given what happened in the season finale. Clyde Phillips, who served as showrunner on the first four seasons of Dexter and on Dexter: New Blood, said he would be interested in working on a show called Harrison, which would follow the story of Dexter’s son… and now People reports that Phillips is going to have the chance to tell a story that revolves around Harrison. But apparently the show isn’t going to be called Harrison. Instead, it’s being referred to as “a new version” of Dexter: New Blood. So Dexter: New Blood will continue after all, with the new season set to depict the ongoing emergence of Dexter’s son Harrison.

Showtime’s taking a deep dive into the world of Dexter, the serial killer who kills serial killers, with an origin series and more of Dexter: New Blood. The origin story, currently titled Dexter: Origins but that may change, will examine Dexter Morgan’s backstory.
Per Showtime: “Dexter: Origins will dramatize young Dexter Morgan at the outset of his transition into the avenging serial killer he would become. Set in the Miami that was a hotbed of real serial killers of his time, the show will begin as Dexter graduates college to join Miami Metro, where he meets younger versions of many of the characters we came to know in the original Dexter. And, of course, the show will also focus on Dexter’s family, including a very-much-alive Harry and a very formidable, teenage Deb.”

Chris McCarthy, the Paramount Global exec who was handed oversight of Showtime last year, is doubling down on his franchise plans for the premium cable network.
The exec who is credited with growing Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone franchise for the streamer is expanding two of Showtime’s prized dramas — Dexter and Billions — with multiple offshoots in the works, sources confirm to The Hollywood Reporter.
The linear cable network is developing as many as four series connected to the Billions franchises — including Millions and Trillions — from exec producers Brian Koppelman and David Levien. The 2021 revival of “Dexter”, titled “Dexter: First Blood”, proved to be phenomenally successful for Showtime with the finale bringing in a record-breaking 3 million viewers — so why isn’t a second season in the works?

When Dexter: New Blood wrapped its run in January 2022, there were plenty of questions.
None of those questions centered on the fate of the franchise's leading man, Dexter Morgan.
At the end of Dexter: New Blood, the titular killer was dead, and Showtime -- and key creatives -- were not ruling out following Dexter's son, Harrison, in a potential second season of the revival.
A year later, that project is officially dead and, err, buried
TV Line reported Tuesday that the project would not be moving forward with a follow-up to New Blood.
The decision is somewhat surprising.
New Blood scared up enormous numbers for Showtime, but maybe the cabler didn't think the franchise was viable without Michael C. Hall.
It would be a tough sell to have a show set in the Dexter universe without the titular character, so maybe it's not a bad thing that Showtime is moving on from the series.

Showtime is letting dead things lie as the premium channel kills off hopes for a second season of Dexter: New Blood, the sequel spinoff to their former Emmy darling, Dexter. Titled “Dexter: New Blood,” the brand new revival season of Showtime’s “Dexter” was a huge hit for the network, becoming the most-watched series in Showtime history. The series averaged over 8 million viewers weekly across platforms, proving that there’s still demand for more stories in the “Dexter” universe. But are we getting another season of “New Blood”?
According to TV Line this week, Showtime is Not moving forward with “Dexter: New Blood” Season 2 – but that certainly doesn’t mean we’ve seen the last of the fan-favorite character.
