DreamWorks Animation has delivered a Halloween treat: gateway horror series “Fright Krewe” has been renewed for a second season.
Look for the supernatural war brewing in New Orleans to continue when Season 2 comes to Hulu and Peacock in 2024.
“Fright Krewe” is Created and Executive Produced by Eli Roth & James Frey. The series is also Executive Produced by Joanna Lewis and Kristine Songco.
In the 10-episode series, ” An ancient prophecy and a Voodoo Queen put misfit teens in charge of saving New Orleans from the biggest demonic threat it’s faced in almost two centuries. But, honestly? Saving the world might be easier than becoming friends.”
The first season of 10 episodes recently debuted on Hulu and Peacock on October 2. In my review, I wrote that the inaugural season “offers enough supernatural charm, heart, and whimsy to endear Soleil and her friends to viewers, hoping to see their ascension to full hero in the future.

The historic city of New Orleans also happens to be one of the most haunted and rich in supernatural folklore. That makes it the perfect setting for “Fright Krewe,” an animated gateway horror series from creators/executive producers Eli Roth and James Frey. The 10-episode inaugural season charms for its adolescent spin on Voodoo, folklore, and a demonic ancient prophecy that’s never quite as scary as high school.
Soleil (Sydney Mikayla) loves New Orleans for its open embrace of all things spooky. That love also means she’s a bit of an outsider at school. Soleil is comfortable as a loner, but that changes when an ancient prophecy gets triggered by the awakening of a dormant demon. Soleil, along with fellow peers Maybe (Tim Johnson Jr.), Missy (Grace Lu), Stanley (Chester Rushing), and Pat (Terrence Little Gardenhigh), is tasked by Loa spirits with the job of saving the city.

Eli Roth is looking to make 2023 a prolific year for horror, at least on his terms. In addition to the release of Thanksgiving – which we’ve been waiting to see for more than 15 years now –he is also behind the upcoming animated series Fright Krewe. Now, we have a trailer for that DreamWorks production.
While there is blood, voodoo, the undead, and more in the trailer, that Fright Krewe is an animated series and comes from the company that brought us Shrek and that little boy fishing from the moon shows that Eli Roth is ready to broaden his horror horizons. And whether you like his movies or not, Roth is one of the foremost historians of the genre and does objectively deserve respect in that regard. But can he handle animation?

There's something of a fad, in the early years of the 2020s, for making films set in and styled like the 1980s, and few have captured that era quite as well as this energetic teen horror tale from Timothy Woodward Jr. From the elaborate make-up to the pulsing synthesizer score to the lofty moral tone of its most brutal scenes, it's a film which draws heavily on nostalgia and on the borrowed memories of a generation of viewers who were not born the first time around.
The protagonists, of course, are themselves teenagers. Quiet, withdrawn Chris (Chester Rushing) is the new boy in town, weighed down by a secret from his past. Tonya (Erin Sanders) is queen bee at his new high school, oozing confidence and glamour yet haunted by the disappearance, so years previously, of her younger sister. Together with her ex-boyfriend Zack (Mike Manning) and his younger brother Brett.

The Call tells the story of newcomer Chris (Chester Rushing) who befriends a group of small town friends whose hobby includes harassing Edith and Edward Cranston (Lin Share and Tobin Bell respectively) over the death of ones of the groups siblings. After the kids smash up their property one night Edith can’t stand it any more and takes her own life… Invited to her will reading by Edward the group are asked to take place in a simple “game”, to go into a back room and make one phone call and stay on the line for 60 seconds.

American character actor Tobin Bell is, of course, a true horror star after appearing throughout the entire Saw franchise as the antagonist John Kramer, aka Jigsaw. More recently, Bell has worked on other movies of this genre, including the Mexican production Belzebuth, directed by Emilio Portes, and The Call, which just hit theaters and drive-ins in the US last Friday, October 2. Directed by Timothy Woodward Jr., The Call follows a group of teenagers who hold a grudge against an old lady, Edith Cranston (Lin Shaye), who’s apparently a witch and the unpunished responsible party for the disappearance years ago of a local girl, the sister of one of the teen protagonists. The new kid on the block, Chris (Chester Rushing), soon joins the “tradition”...

"I've got a feeling this guy is not going to rest, until he gets justice for his son..." Cinedigm has released a second trailer for action crime thriller Beyond the Law, the latest from horror producer / director James Cullen Bressack. Steven Seagal, Dmx, and Johnny Messner star in this action-packed thriller about a man's quest for justice in a corrupt city. When a former detective learns of the murder of his estranged son, he ventures back to the darkened streets he once knew so well. Armed, dangerous and with nothing to lose, he must take on the ruthless local mob in his mission for revenge. Also starring Zack Ward and Chester Rushing, plus Bill Cobbs as a rough yet compassion friend of the reformed cop. This looks like one of the most bland, forgettable action films this year. But if you want to see it, this is already available on VOD now.

It’s hard to tell good from evil in “Beyond the Law,” but in the brutal first trailer — released ahead of its upcoming day and date release — Johnny Messner and Dmx are determined to figure it out. Despite, of course, the violence meted out by a host of thugs — and Steven Seagal’s trademark wrist-snap. Watch the new trailer, and a lot of brutal beatdowns, exclusively above.
From director James Cullen Bressack, “Beyond the Law” stars Messner as an ex-cop dragged back into his old life after his estranged son is murdered. But as their investigations drag them deeper into the criminal underworld, the come up against the local mob, and a mysterious criminal enforcer (Seagal).
“Beyond the Law” opens theatrically Dec.

Shudder’s new original series Deadwax is so darn good that parent network AMC might just steal it from them. Written and directed by Graham Reznick, starring Hannah Gross (Mindhunter), Evan Gamble (Hap and Leonard), Chester Rushing (Stranger Things) and Ted Raimi (Ash vs. Evil Dead), and after four episodes watched for review ahead of our interview with Reznick, Deadwax needs to be on your radar. *before going into the review, let’s get the obvious out of the way: we at Age of the Nerd would like to take a moment to say we are fully aware of Victor Salva’s criminal history and the moral dilemma that is presented when discussing or financially supporting his movies.
The horror landscape has changed rather drastically in the sixteen years since controversy magnet Victor Salva first introduced slasher-starved audiences to “the Creeper” (Jonathan Breck) and his taste for body parts in the ‘Jeepers Creepers‘ franchise. Since then, there’s been the rise of the torture porn sub-genre and filmmakers like Eli Roth and Rob Zombie, the supernatural found footage genre, an obnoxious onslaught of inferior remakes (fingers shall be pointed specifically at The Wicker Man, When a Stranger Calls and Black Christmas) and a needed return to form thanks to filmmakers like James Wan, David Sandberg and Jennifer Kent.

My Father Die is an angry little debut for Sean Brosnan, and thankfully for papa Pierce Brosnan, not with biographical intent. It’s true that Brosnan keeps revenge in the family, but only by way of fictional bayou country folks. Pierce is safe from Sean’s bullet-ridden bite of familial revenge, unlike some characters who find themselves caught between not-so-friendly fire and the struggles of living up to (or denouncing) parental pedestals. It’s pulpy, fur-wearing, country fried fury, following a darker path that’s guided by stellar direction from the man with the golden camera. It’s not perfect, but stylish and provocative enough to erase any notion that “first-timer” is synonymous with “amateur.”

In 1973, in a small town in Texas, Stephens Sanitarium was the site of a grizzly tragedy. Doctor Stephens was brutally murdered, and with no one else in charge, the patients took over control of the asylum. The result was mayhem, and the eventual death of almost all the patients as well. The only surviving patient was found a week later alone in the building. And since then has been moved to a state institution and labeled a dangerous murderer.
