Update: Director Richard Stanley (Color Out of Space) who was the subject of allegations of abuse by an ex-partner, has filed criminal complaints in France in response.
“My attorney has filed criminal complaints of Libel and Harassment on my behalf, in France, against Tracy Robertson, aka ‘Scarlett Amaris’, a screenwriter and fantasist who launched a vicious attack on my career and reputation on March 16, 2021,” Stanley said.
Stanley called the accusations “lies and damnable lies, and I have the witnesses and evidence to fully discredit Tracy’s story as a dark fairytale that bears no relationship to the truth.”
He added that he was confident in the outcome of his legal proceeding, and said his reputation would be vindicated by the evidence he would present.
“In the meantime,” he concluded, “I wish to thank all those who have stood by me through this difficult period.”

I consider myself to be a big fan of Hp Lovecraft’s work. However, much like the band “Guided by Voices” I tend to subconsciously filter out an awful lot of quite poor output, and just remember the good bits.
Lovecraft wrote some great horror, but for the most part it is the greater Lovecraftian universe that the writer set up, that has the most interesting part of his legacy for me. A lot of his writing is, not the greatest and people are right to note the racism and fear that runs right through his works. I always get the sense that Lovecraft was quite a pathetic, pitiable, frightened man, eating his tinned green beans cold and being frightened...

Nicolas Cage is certainly building on his resume of genre-driven films with the new sci-fi horror pic Color Out of Space, which opens in limited release January 24. The film marks the first feature from celebrated cult filmmaker Richard Stanley since Hardware.
Based on the short story by H.P. Lovecraft, the film follows Nathan Gardner (Cage) and his family after a meteorite lands in the front yard of their farm. As things unravel, the family finds themselves battling a mutant extraterrestrial organism as it infects their minds and bodies, transforming their quiet rural life into a technicolor nightmare.
The film, which Stanley co-wrote with Scarlett Amaris also stars Joely Richardson, Madeleine Arthur, Brendan Meyer, Julian Hilliard, Elliot Knight, Q’orianka Kilcher and Tommy Chong.
The U.S. rights to the film were acquired by Rlje Films ahead of its Midnight Madness premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival this past September. Based on the trailer (which you can watch below), the film is very much in the same vein of Mandy a fever dream of a thriller that also starred Cage. Like Mandy, the film is produced by Elijah Wood’s SpectreVision and Xyz films. Mandy banked a worldwide gross of $1,335,484.
Color Out of Space is produced by SpectreVision’s Daniel Noah, Josh C. Waller, Lisa Whalen and Elijah Wood. Executive producers are Timur Bekbosunov, Johnny Chang, Emma Lee and Peter Wong for Ace Pictures, which is also financing. Stacy Jorgensen serves as executive producer for SpectreVision.
The modern-day B-movie has already garnered a cult audience and has been gaining traction since its world premiere at Tiff with an 89% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The film is set to open in 75 theaters with an additional 150 one-night-only eventized screenings at Regal, Drafthouse, AMC, Landmark and various independent chains.
Todd Robinson’s all-star Vietnam drama The Last Full Measure starring Sebastian Stan, Christopher Plummer and William Hurt will also debut this we The film follows the true story of Vietnam War hero William H. Pitsenbarger (Jeremy Irvine), a U.S. Air Force Pararescuemen medic who personally saved over 60 men in the Army’s 1st Infantry Division during a devastating 1966 battle, losing his own life in the process.
Fast forward 32 years later and Pentagon staffer Scott Huffman (Stan) is tasked with investigating a Congressional Medal of Honor request for Pitsenbarger made by his best friend and partner on the mission (Hurt) and his parents (Plummer and Diane Ladd). Scott seeks out the testimony of Army veterans who witnessed Pitsenbarger’s heroic rescues He talks to Takoda (Samuel L. Jackson), Burr (Peter Fonda) and Mott (Ed Harris), but as he more about Pitsenbarger’s courageous acts, he uncovers a high-level conspiracy behind the decades-long denial of the medal, prompting him to put his own career on the line to seek justice for the fallen airman. The film also stars LisaGay Hamilton, Amy Madigan, Linus Roache, John Savage, Alison Sudol and Bradley Whitford.

Watch the trailer below.
Also opening this weekend is the Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari-directed Panga, which is inspired by the life of a national level Kabaddi player from India. The film starring Kangana Ranaut, Jassie Gill, Richa Chadda, Neena Gupta and Yagya Bhasin is set to open globally on January 24 with over 100 theaters across North America.
The female-fronted pic is very much a “second act” type of story that sheds light on the ups and downs of a middle-class Indian woman who is a forgotten world champion of the popular South Asian sport of Kabaddi. She looks to give a new meaning to her existing role as a wife and mother and makes the choice to return to the sport and in turn, challenges age stereotypes and a new generation complexities. In turn, she creates an upheaval in her life as she is torn between family responsibility and love for the sport.
Detective Chinatown 3 will also debut this weekend and will continue the wildly successful action-comedy buddy franchise starring Baiqiang Wang and Haoran Liu. The third installment finds detectives Tang Ren and Qin Feng in Tokyo as they investigate a crime alongside Noda Hiroshi (Satoshi Tsumabuki). As a result, a hilarious battle of detectives ensue. With Chen Sicheng returning to the director’s chair, the film is one of the biggest U.S. releases of a Chinese-language film. The first installment debuted in 2015 and earned $125,112,232 in China and $474,252 stateside while the 2018 sequel earned a mind-boggling $541,406,438 at the Chinese box office and $1,983,984 domestically.

Nicolas Cage stars in Color Out of Space, adapting H.P. Lovecraft’s story about a mysterious meteor’s effect on a small town.
Color Out of Space may be one of many when it comes to star Nicolas Cage’s current spate of debt-decreasing payday pictures, but this one arrives with the unique context of being a wantonly wild adaptation of a story by legendary horror author H.P. Lovecraft.
This prospective new source of “Cage Rage” memes has the iconic headliner playing a family man whose farm estate existence becomes incredibly inconvenienced when a meteorite lands on his front yard; an event that becomes the catalyst for an outbreak of a mutant virus that runs roughshod across his Massachusetts small town, jeopardizing his family and neighbors.

Nothing good can come from an introspective and seemingly content Nicolas Cage muttering that he’s finally “living the dream,” especially in a film directed by beleaguered filmmaker Richard Stanley and inspired by a classic short by H.P. Lovecraft. Such is the general shape of Stanley’s wild return to feature filmmaking, “Color Out of Space,” which follows Cage and company as they attempt a quiet life in the country, only to be hit (literally and figuratively) by a malevolent alien organism that materializes as vivid color.
Per the film’s intriguingly slight official synopsis, “after a meteorite lands in the front yard of their farm, Nathan Gardner and his family find themselves battling a mutant extraterrestrial organism as it infects their minds and bodies, transforming their quiet rural life into a technicolor nightmare.” The film also stars Joely Richardson as Nathan’s wife, along with Madeleine Arthur, Brendan Meyer,...

Ever since its premiere earlier this month in Toronto, Richard Stanley’s Color Out of Space has been eliciting an array of reactions, and to this writer, it is undoubtedly one of the wildest films I’ve seen in 2019, which is why this writer was so excited to speak with Stanley on the heels of the film’s Us premiere at the 2019 Fantastic Fest.
Based on the short story by H. P. Lovecraft, Stanley discussed how his involvement in Color Out of Space came about because of another Lovecraftian project he worked on years ago. “Like everything in life, how this came about was random and strange. It came out of me and making a Lovecraft [adaptation] in short film about four or five years ago, a film called The Mother of Toads, which became the first part of an anthology movie called The Theatre Bizarre. Rlje Films has picked up U.S. rights to Richard Stanley’s horror/sci-fi feature Color Out of Space for low-to-mid seven figures ahead of pic’s Tiff Midnight Madness Saturday night world premiere. The movie, which is also produced by Elijah Wood’s SpectreVision and Xyz films, reps another collaboration between the three companies on another Cage vehicle, last year’s horror pic Mandy being the previous title.
The movie, which stars Nicolas Cage and Joely Richardson, is based on the short story by H.P. Lovecraft. After a meteorite lands in the front yard of their farmstead, Nathan Gardner (Cage) and his family find themselves battling a mutant extraterrestrial organism as it infects their minds and bodies, transforming their quiet rural life into a technicolor nightmare.
For Stanley, Color Out of Space reps his return to the Midnight Madness lineup after 29 years, his last being the sci-fi thriller Hardware.

Richard Stanley has always marched to the beat of a unique drum. He hasn’t made very many narrative films (Hardware, Dust Devil) since arriving at the turn of the ’90s, but he has always fascinated due to his quirky spirit and dedication to the odd and unusual. And so it goes that his documentary The Otherworld (2013) follows a path true to his nature, but is shot with a touching sense of humanity in its look at strange phenomena and the people who embrace it.
The Otherworld is Stanley’s journey to an area of southern France he dubs “The Zone”; a place that holds many mysteries, especially to the folks that inhabit the land tucked away in the Pyrenees Mountains. Montsegur, Bugarach, and especially Rennes-Le-Chateau are regions and townships filled with fascinating characters and mystique necessary to elevate the material beyond a gorgeous travelogue, which it most definitely is as well.

Bobcat Goldthwait, Buddy Giovinazzo & Joe Dante Among Fantasia Fest’s 2013 Frontieres Co-Prod Market
Montreal’s Fantasia International Film Festival – it takes place this year between July 18 and August 6 and has always been about more than just the films. They offer plenty of panel discussions and master classes every year, and last year’s edition introduced the Frontières International Co-Production Market, uniting North American, European, and Australasian talent and funders in an initiative focused specifically on fostering genre film productions and relationships. Noteworthy projects from the inaugural edition included new works from seasoned filmmakers such as Stuart Gordon (Re-Animator) and Bruce McDonald (Pontypool), as well as up-and-coming talent like Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead (Resolution), Paul Campion (The Devil’s Rock), Jason Eisener (Hobo With a Shotgun), and Jorge Michel Grau (We Are What We Are). At the Fantasia Industry Rendez-Vous – a sort of three-day industry cocktail party – professional introductions were made, and many of the projects found co-producers and/or international sales agents.

It was just announced last week that Frontières will become a circuit in-between Fantasia, in July, and the Brussels International Fantastic Film Festival, in April. This initiative was made possible by funding from the Media Mundus program of the European Commission. Frontières was the only new initiative to be funded by the program this year.
