This fixture was last played four years ago in the Premier League. Villa won 3-1 thanks to a John Carew brace. And what we wouldn’t have given for more than one goal as both teams played very poor football in what was a boring match. Neither Reading nor Aston Villa would look out of place in the championship as both squads have little quality and are built on defensive stability. One of the best players on the park, however, was Villa frontman Christian Benteke. His 80th minute header was the difference between the two sides and he showed that he is a class above the majority of players on the park.
Aston Villa made two changes to the team that drew 0-0 with Arsenal. Karim El-Ahmadi and Ron Vlaar were replaced by youngsters Ashley Westwood and Nathan Baker. Villa played a 4-2-3-1 formation.

The best thing (and worst thing) about football is that you never know exactly what is going to happen. We were all certain that Man City would win the league, except for those few weeks when we were convinced that Man United had won the league, except for that 6-1 at Old Trafford when we were convinced Man City were going to run away…. You get my point.
And if we have learned anything, it is that we actually know nothing.
Which is why the Republic of Ireland will win Euro 2012.
I am certain of it.
And here is how…
Group Stages
Ireland start out their campaign against Croatia, a decent side that have punished England on a few occasions. But Trapattoni has built himself a squad that can get points off difficult teams. For Irish fans, that difficult game in Russia will live long in the memory, if only...

Swansea will look to add to their ambition of a top 10 finish in the Premier League as they host already relegated Wolves at the Liberty Stadium this afternoon.
Whilst the Midlands club suffered the fate of relegation at the hands of title contenders Manchester City last weekend, Terry Connor has insisted that his team will not simply roll over for their opponents in the final three games of the season.
Swansea on the other hand are near enough mathematically safe from relegation in their maiden season in the Premier League and boss Brendan Rodgers will be looking for his players to finish the season on a high.
One player who will be familiar with both teams today is Wolves goalkeeper Dorus de Vries. De Vries left the Swans at the start of the season on a free transfer but has yet to really challenge Wayne Hennessey for the number 1 jersey,...

Team news ahead of Wolves vs Arsenal, a crucial game tonight for both ends of the Premier League table. Arsenal are on the hunt for fourth place whilst Wolves are scrapping for their lives at the foot of the table.
Kick-off is at 7.45pm at the Molineux.
Jamie O’Hara (groin), Stephen Hunt (groin) and Jody Craddock (hamstring) are all unavailable for tonight’s game.
Wolves caretaker boss Terry Connor also needs to decide whether to regular captain Roger Johnson to the side. The controversial defender was dropped to the bench for the game against Stoke a week after the on-field disagreement between he and Wayne Hennessey.
For Arsenal, defender Laurent Koscielny sits out after picking up his 10th yellow card of the season in the win over Manchester City on Sunday. He will sit out two games for the Gunners.

Stephen Hunt's science fiction novella Sliding Void is currently number one in the UK charts for science fiction and number two in the USA Amazon charts (sandwiched by Hg Wells - now theres an honour). Its at number two in the general adventure charts, just under Lee Child (in the States, he's sharing with The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets Nest by Stieg Larsson). Its also number one in Amazon Germany, France and Spain. This novella is still…...

A fresh start for The Wearsiders today as they travel to Wolves, their players knowing that they have something of a fresh slate with new manager Martin O’Neill (who will be in the stands today, assistant manager Eric Black in charge until Monday) and the impetus is there to impress their new gaffer. It was obvious in the last couple of weeks that former boss Steve Bruce had lost not only the support of his players but of the fans too and with a new manager in it will hopefully bring better horizons. It sure does feel a lot longer than six months ago when Bruce led Sunderland to their highest top flight finish in a decade.
For Wolves, they were at one point this season desperate for boss Mick McCarthy to similarly be given the chop but he has rode it out and so far remains. The struggling...

If ever there was a must win game for a Chelsea boss, this afternoon’s tie just has to be it. New boss Andre Villas-Boas has come under significant scrutiny over the last couple of weeks for what is now officially the wost start to a season since chairman Roman Abramaovich took over in 2003. The bottom line is he won’t survive too long as manager with a side that isn’t competing at the top. Going in to today’s fixture they lie 12 points adrift from Manchester City and they suffered a defeat in the Champions League this week at Bayer Leverkusen that has left many wondering just what the side might be capable of this season.
Today they take on Mick McCarthy’s Wolves, a fixture earlier in the season that probably looked a doddle, but not with their current run of form of four defeats in their last seven league games.

Giovanni Trapattoni went into this match against Estonia knowing that his future as Republic of Ireland boss hung in the balance but he needn’t have worried as his side ran out comfortable 4-0 winners over nine man Estonia.
Goals from Keith Andrews, Jonathan Walters and a brace from Robbie Keane all but sealed Ireland’s qualification for Euro 2012 as their opponents saw Andrei Stepanov and Raio Piiroja sent off for the home side.
The opening ten minutes were a nervy and uneventful affair with very few chances. A tame shot form Jonathan Walters and a long range deflected effort from Konstantin Vassiljev were the only attempts on goal.
But then, virtually out of nowhere, Aiden McGeady’s inch perfect cross found Andrews who directed his header expertly into the bottom corner past the outstretched Pareiko to give the Irish an early lead (13).
It was an excellent header from Andrews...

Wolves were the better of two error-prone sides as they welcomed Wigan to the Molineux. Jamie O’Hara, David Edwards and Stephen Ward helped Mick McCarthy’s men to a 3-1 victory, with Ben Watson’s penalty rebound the only response from the visitors. With both sides squandering many a chance, it was Wigan ‘keeper Ali Al-Habsi who kept the score looking reasonable, as weak attacks met weaker defences.
A huge game really – both teams have been very poor so far this season and would have seen this encounter as vital. After all, if they couldn’t beat today’s opponents who on earth could they beat? This was true of Wolves and Wigan – Mick McCarthy’s side hadn’t won in eight weeks, and Roberto Martinez’s Latics had lost an unbelievable seven games on the trot. It wasn’t too bold a prediction to suggest that whoever lost...

Halloween was a week ago but defeat for either Mick McCarthy or Roberto Martinez this afternoon would give the losing manager the heebie jeebies and a run of sleepless nights about their future as we move ever closer to the festive silly season. A season where so often Santa’s presents delivered from his sack are… the sack. In the run up to the January transfer window, football Chairman start weighing up whether a new boss with a cash boost on new players can rejuvenate a side and get them out of the mire, or whether to stick by the current manager through the trading period, trusting the judgement you had in his appointment in the first place.
No manager ever wants their Chairman to have to make that choice and it’s important today for Wolves and Wigan to remember what it was like to win in the Premier...

Manchester City had no real problems qualifying for the quarter finals of the Carling Cup, though they were a goal down to Wolves until the 37th minute. Nenad Milijas took the lead for City but goals from Adam Johnson, Samir Nasri, a Dorus De Vries own goal and two from Edin Dzeko put Mick McCarthy’s team in their place at the Molineux. Jamie O’Hara pulled one back for the hosts but they were ultimately outclassed on the night.
It was hardly going to be the most important game of Roberto Mancini’s reign as Manchester City manager, but he wasn’t going to turn down a chance for silverware and although the Carling Cup is perhaps not the most prestigious of titles it is not to be sniffed at either. What Is to be sniffed at though is Carlos Tevez’s apparent decision to sue the Italian manager for making him look bad.

Wolves spent the second 45 minutes of this game clinging on for dear life as Aston Villa threw everything they had at Mick McCarthy’s men, to no avail. In a game with relatively few on chances on target, it was the Villans who took the game by the scruff of the neck, testing Wayne Hennessey in the Wolves goal a few times, but nowhere near as much as Alex McLeish would have liked. Wanderers held on for a good point however, moving up to the top of the table in the process for the second time in two weeks.
It is testament to the erratic nature of the opening weeks of the Premier League that this derby, usually a mid table affair, was contested by two teams in the top four; Wolves and Aston Villa starting the game in 3rd and 4th place respectively.
The short journey for Mick McCarthy...

On April 16th 2011, science fiction author Stephen Hunt sent out a press release to genre websites, including Fgt, announcing a letter of protest signed by 85 authors of sci-fi and fantasy literature sent to the BBC.
This letter, penned by Hunt, complained that the BBC 2 had not covered science fiction, fantasy, and horror fiction sufficiently in their World Book Night programming on March 5th, 2011. The programs that particularly bothered Hunt were called “The Books We Really Read”, an episode of The Culture Show, hosted by comedian Sue Perkins and “New Novelists: 12 of the Best.”
Hunt quoted himself in his press release as outlining his contempt for the BBC shows:
Quote:
Fantasy author Stephen Hunt, who organised the protest, commented, “The sneering tone that was levelled towards commercial fiction during The Books We Really Read was deeply counterproductive to the night’s aims of actually encouraging people to read novels. The weight...
