Jud "Fabio" Birza is the king of Survivor: Nicaragua. We felt it was a well deserved win which represented a change in Jud's character and game play throughout the season. What do our writers think? Did the right person win? Could it have played out differently? What do we make of Redemption Island?
We're looking forward to hearing from our readers as well.
Did the right person win?
Kyle Kalember: The person I was rooting for by the end won, but that wasn't the question that was asked. I truly believe that Fabio deserved to win the game. He was just as deserving as any of the final three and I was happy with the outcome.
Dan Forcella: That is such a tough question in the game of Survivor. That's what makes this game so good: in any given season, the jury can vote entirely differently. I have been...

He had to win three straight challenges just to get to the finals, but once he did, Judson “Fabio” Birza poured on the charm to become the million dollar winner of Survivor: Nicaragua. His savvy social game combined with strength in immunity competitions propelled him over Chase and Sash, making the 21-year-old the youngest Survivor winner ever. We spoke this morning with a still clearly elated Fabio, even if he was working on only 25 minutes of sleep.

During the first tribal council of tonight’s season finale, Dan gave his reasons for why he felt Holly was a bigger threat than him.
Whether it made sense to you, me, the jury or anyone, Jeff Probst correctly pointed out that Dan’s perception of why Holly is a threat matters more than if she really was one.
This conversation very neatly summarized the way that Jud, Holly, Dan and, even to some extent, Chase, changed throughout the course of the season. If a vote took place even halfway through the game, none of these four would have been in the top three vote getters. Ironically, the one who would have been, Sash, was blanked in the finale.
Although Chase and Sash tried to argue otherwise at the final tribal council, the way Jud played the game most definitely is a viable way to play. Going with the flow,...

Jud "Fabio" Birza is the Sole Survivor of "Survivor: Nicaragua". The 21-year-old model from Los Angeles beat 24-year-old singer Chase Rice and 30-year-old real estate broker Matthew "Sash" Lenahan in the December 19 finale by gaining five votes from the show's nine-person jury of previous contestants.
That night, Fabio won his three straight immunities including the coin-stacking challenges. He also won fellow survivors' sympathy when giving a tribute to his family in the Tribal Council. In his opening statement on the final Tribal Council, Fabio said he was "himself" while Chase chose to boast about being the one who outwit and outplayed everybody else.
Audience got to see Marty voting for Fabio, Alina voting for Chase, Dan voting for Fabio and Brenda voting for Chase. When it was down to 4 to 4, host Jeff Probst called out the last vote which went to Fabio. He consequently won the $1 million prize.

'Survivor: Nicaragua' finale: Jud 'Fabio' Birza, Chase Rice, Holly Hoffman or Sash Lenahan? Who won?
Were you surprised by the finale of the 21st season of "Survivor"? We were surprised by a few things, particularly how close the final vote was.
Immunity Challenge
After a season-recapping video montage and some boring strategy talk, the survivors head to the next Immunity Challenge. They have to answer questions about Nicaragua in order to get puzzle pieces, then assemble a puzzle for the win.
Holly, Sash and Chase are in the lead when they get to the puzzle. Dan and Fabio are in it, but far behind. Sash is good at puzzles and looks to have this in the bag, until Fabio masterfully gets his puzzle together and takes it. Wow, good for Fabio.
Pre-Tribal
Fabio is gunning for Holly and he starts working on Chase and Sash to vote her out. Chase seems to be pretty set on Dan because Dan hasn't made any enemies and will easily win jury votes.

After last night’s temper tantrum, I hope that anyone who was a Jane supporter is hiding in the shadows this morning, afraid to admit that they backed a woman who is 56 going on 5.
I haven’t been a Jane supporter since her ridiculous spat with Marty. Absurdly, she took his attempts to vote her out of the game as a personal attack. She refused to recognize his logic that she was a threat to win challenges and the game. Instead she responded in a manner only a fraction better than how NaOnka handles adversity. Unfortunately, she ultimately won out over Marty because was more of a threat to Brenda and Sash than Jane.
Since Marty’s ouster, Jane has calmed down a bit, made close friends with Chase and Holly and cried over a dead chicken. Then, Jud wins immunity and suddenly her head is on the chopping block again.

Survivor: Nicaragua's latest castoff is finally setting the rodent record straight. Apparently quitters never prosper either. In a shocking move, Kelly "Purple" Shinn, 20, and NaOnka Mixon, 27, took themselves out of the running for the million-dollar prize on Survivor this week, after completing almost three-fourths of the competition. The nursing student from Mesa, Ariz., and the Los Angeles-based Pe teacher defended their decisions in a phone interview with People. Jeff gave you the afternoon to stew. Did you ever waver about quitting? Kelly: I thought about it but I don't know that I reconsidered. I was so physically ill. I tried to figure out if my body could handle any more and I didn't think it could.

As the cast of Survivor: Nicaragua gets more depressing with each player revealing more character flaws, the game continues to get more difficult to predict. We already killed the pair in our review, but wanted to give our round table writers (and our readers!) a chance to sound off as well.
Which unnecessarily long decision announcement did you like better: LeBron James's or Kelly S and NaOnka's?
Kyle Kalember: They both sucked. I hated them both. I was convinced that NaOnka was gone, but I was holding out hope that Kelly S would change her mind. I'm still shocked that this actually happened. The saving grace was Jeff being so visibly annoyed with both of them. The entire show he had an awesome edge to him. This is why he is the best host ever. Nobody cares more about this show than he does and he hates anyone that disrespects the game.

"Survivor: Nicaragua" had an historical moment on Wednesday night (Dec. 1) when NaOnka Mixon and Kelly Shinn quit the game after 28 days, only 11 days from the end. They tell Zap2it in their joint exit interview why they quit and that they don't feel bad about it.
Even though you quit the show, are you still glad you went on "Survivor"?
Kelly: "I am so glad. I think 'Survivor' is the opportunity and experience of a lifetime. I think it was incredible, even if it was not always beautiful and wonderful. I spent some of the worst days of my life in Nicaragua, but that was part of the experience. I would not have changed anything. I'm so happy to have been a part of 'Survivor: Nicaragua.'"

LeBron James’ one-hour Espn special, “The Decision,” is no longer the worst televised announcement in history.
That title now belongs to last night’s episode of Survivor “You Started, You’re Finishing."
A player quitting on Survivor is certainly unique and deserves plenty of attention. But did we really need to stall for an afternoon to convene for a special tribal council so that Kelly S and NaOnka could make their quitting decision official? Obviously, Jeff was trying to get them to change their mind. Perhaps Kelly S might have been swayed, but NaOnka had clearly thought everything through. She even had a seemingly rehearsed speech prepared to tell Jeff she was finished.
At least most of us didn’t really know what LeBron’s decision was going to be when we were dragged through the one-hour debacle. We may have wasted an hour, but we got an answer out of it.

The show gets positively "Big Brother"-esque in its cross-promotional schilling, plus two people quit. Which is 100% weak sauce.

But first, the rain has everybody feeling pretty miserable, but some are more vocal about it than others (NaOnka and Kelly, I'm looking at you). The next morning, NaOnka gives Chase her Idol because she's going to quit. Ugh. But unsurprising.

Reward Challenge
They are divided into two teams, tied together, where each team has to untie an 8-foot "Gulliver" (he's also heavy ... downright Brobdingnagian, if you will) and carry him over a series of obstacles. Uh, Ok. That's a weird theme -- and then I understand better because it's a cross-promotion with the movie "Gulliver's Travels." Sigh. The Sprint crap is bad enough, but "Survivor" has never before quite sunk to the "Big Brother" level.

"Survivor: Nicaragua" saw Brenda Lowe get the boot due to Holly and Jane's conspiring against her. She tells Zap2it that she loved her time on the show and that she really did have a strategy going into her final Tribal Council.
Did you enjoy "Survivor"? Was it everything you hoped it would be?
"Yeah, I loved 'Survivor.' I love the game. Of course, it's probably the most miserable experience too because you're not eating, all the obvious things. I loved it, I enjoyed it. I hated it what happened yesterday but I loved it."
You were criticized last night for not fighting harder -- why didn't you?
"There was a strategy behind it and that's why it was so frustrating in Tribal Council because this is my strategy -- my only hope was to have Sash give me the Idol. That was my angle for staying in the game.

Here is Sean Furfaro's Recap of Survivor Nicaragua, Episode 10.
Last week, we saw the end of Marty, as the fake Chess Grandmaster made his way over to join Alina on the jury. Would Marty’s hair still be as crazy once he actually had a shower? Would Sash and Brenda continue to run the game? And why did CBS give us a cryptic teaser at the end of last week’s episode, only to reveal what happened in a later preview?
My Random Thoughts:
- At the beginning of the episode, Brenda talked about how she and Sash were the King and Queen at camp, but she was more like the King, and Sash was the Queen. Come on, be honest…you laughed. And you knew it was true.
- Upon returning from Tribal Council, Holly told Jane (and this is verbatim): “There comes a time in this game,...

Did you miss The Merge last week? Catch up with my recap here.
"Running the Camp" begins with Libertad returning to their camp after Alina's dismissal. As Fabio collects everyone's torches, NaOnka tells the camera that Tribal Council really shook things up. She thinks Marty went too hard at Jane, but that Jane was great at taking it. Unsurprisingly, NaOnka wouldn't have taken such an onslaught as well. Chase whispers to Brenda that what Marty said about him aligning with Jane was B.S., and he apologizes to Jane for the way she was treated. Jane confesses that "Mr. Farty," as she is now calling Marty, is square in her cross-hairs. She knows he can't beat her mentally and probably can't physically, so Marty needs to watch out.
On the morning of Day 23, Sash and Marty go for water. Marty asks who voted for him besides Alina, figuring it was Chase.

At "Survivor: Nicaragua's" latest Tribal Council, NaOnka went a little crazy, but it didn't matter because the women finally got their act together and sent Marty packing.
Post-Tribal
Everyone was pretty annoyed with Marty's anti-Jane rant at Tribal Council, so if he doesn't win Immunity this week, I'd be surprised if he stuck around. Marty, of course, thinks everybody but him is "just stupid." His big plan is to make everybody think NaOnka is going home, so the Idol is flushed out, but having everybody blindside Jane.
Reward Challenge
The tribe is divided into two teams -- it just happens to end up men vs. women, which is hilarious. Because there is an odd number, Chase was not chosen and has to sit out, but he gets to chose one team to back and if they win, he goes with them on the reward. He chooses the...

"Survivor: Nicaragua" has become a weekly magic act courtesy of Fake Chess Grandmaster Marty, who has seemingly been targeted for elimination each of the past three weeks only to wiggle away, each time sending a female castaway home in his place. Marty Piombo got voted off 'Survivor 21 Nicaragua' in episode 9. Tonight's show kicked off with scenes from last week's episode when Alina Wilson got voted off the island. Then they showed more commentary footage. NaOnka revealed that she didn't like the way Marty went at Jane in the last counsel meeting. Marty started throwing out NaOnka's name for elimination. Jane said she would like to whip Marty's ass. Next, they showed the "Rewards Challenge" footage. In the "Rewards Challenge" tribemembers were split into two teams "men vs. women,"and had to run through obstacle courses, retrieve three keys. Then use them to open three locks. The first team to complete it,won the "Rewards Challenge." The men's team ended up winning it,and won a Survivor barbecue. Chase decided to join the girls' team for the challenge, and lost out.

I didn't expect to find myself missing Alina Wilson on "Survivor: Nicaragua," but after talking to the show's latest castoff, that may end up being the case. Alina never fully recovered after finding herself on the low side of a number alliance on the original La Flor tribe, but she somehow managed to stave off elimination long enough to make the Merge and long enough to make the season's jury. And after a season of deluded or simply confused eliminated contestants, Alina came across as smart, funny and candid about her time in the game. I got no evidence...

After Alina compared herself to a pawn, our review of last night's episode compared the remaining players to chess pieces and their relative shots to win the game. However, there are other questions about this week's events on Survivor that need to be debated.
Should Marty have gone home instead of Alina? Did Sash honor his agreement from last week with Marty? What the heck is going on with NaOnka?
Once you've sounded off about who is a pawn and who is a bishop, let us know what you think about our round table questions as well.
Who should have gone home, Alina or Marty?
Kakdaddy: I've been curious for the longest time why everyone was against Alina. It didn't seem like she really did anything all that awful, but whatever. It probably should have been Marty. Marty is more of a long-term threat if you let him stick around.

We've unfortunately hit a nadir in our Survivor puns (see title), but Survivor: Nicaragua just enjoyed its best episode yet. As the La Flor and Espada tribes merged into an agreeable cesspool, we received absolute confirmation about who's in charge of the game's fate. And sweet, perhaps-even-a-human-being Alina was the most recent castaway to suffer at their hands. Let's see where it all went wrong for her.

Alina Wilson was the next in a string of strong female competitors to be voted out of "Survivor: Nicaragua." She tells Zap2it about her experience and how hard it is for strong women to succeed in the game.
Did you enjoy Survivor? Was it everything you hoped it would be?
"It was everything and more. I absolutely loved 'Survivor,' I loved every minute of it and I loved watching it unravel on TV. It was so cool and literally the best experience of my life. Every memory I have of it is great. Even though I was voted out way earlier than I expected to be, I'm very, very happy."
Now that you've seen the show air, has anything or anyone surprised you?
"Most recently, I was very surprised by Benry's animosity towards me. I was shocked by that. And NaOnka's personality as a whole was very shocking to me.

Did you miss last week's unbelievable (Marty, what are you doing?!?) episode of Survivor: Nicaragua? Catch up with a recap here.
This week's episode begins at the La Flor camp after Jill's ouster. With birds picking apart a carcass, Marty comments that the vultures are circling. He's a "dead man walking," and that without Jill or the Hidden Immunity Idol, he is totally exposed. Fabio arrives with Tree Mail. He unwraps it, and hands a key to Brenda. There is a map inside, and the note instructs La Flor to pack up all of their belongings and follow the map to their new home. It's time for The Merge! Marty believes this to be amazing news because he thinks the original La Flor members of both current tribes will be jockeying with each other for position, making him possible safe. "I'm back in the saddle again," Marty cheerily states.

I finally figured out Naonka. At last. After 7 weeks, it all makes sense now.
More on that later. But first…
The Merge
Every season we look for new ways to merge the tribe. After 21 seasons I’m the first to admit that coming up with fresh twists or new wrinkles in the game is one of our biggest challenges. We spend a lot of time talking, brainstorming – searching for those new little moments.
Since the contestants can always sense when the merge is coming, all we can really do with the merge is try our best to find a clever way to reveal it.

It’s pretty obvious if you want to be smart strategically in this game, you pick somebody who’s a pawn. And I’m a pawn.
Moments before Alina was sent home this week by a majority of her former La Flor tribe mates, she uttered the above plea to keep her. The rationale is accurate, but her assessment of her own place in the game was flawed, perhaps intentionally.
Is this man the king of Survivor: Nicaragua
Alina was not a pawn. Pawns can only move forward one space and can only attack diagonally. The breadth of her game had more depth than the isolated movements of a pawn. Alina is a far more dangerous knight who can move two spaces in one direction and then one space perpendicular in a different direction. All in one move. As she said herself, she was going to try and scramble as...

Best. Survivor. Sendoff. Ever. "You are a 100 percent Grade-a dirt squirrel." The Tribal Council Players were at it again tonight, with new faces delivering the same old crazy—and one surprise: a Castaway with a rodent problem. So why'd the camp squirrel go flying home like Bullwinkle's pal Rocky? Photos: Survivor: Nicaragua: Meet the Castaways For one thing, squirrelly Alina wasn't in the Minority Alliance. She lost her original allies, Shannon and Kelly B., and no one likes orange-sucking food bandits. Or dirt squirrels. On the latest "Survivor: Nicaragua," Jane proved to be even more awesome than we already thought, but she still can't oust the person she wants gone the most.
The Merge
Following Jill's ouster, Marty is a tad worried about his safety (having given up the Idol like a big dummy), but then the merge comes -- possibly his hide is saved. La Flor heads to Espada's beach for a big merge feast.
Before La Flor arrives, Alina says all of Espada is going to stick together and oust Marty. She does not hear the crickets chirping as she relays this plan to the others.
When the tribes merge, NaOnka gets her panties in a twist about making tortillas and then getting the last one, which is also the smallest. Yes, your tribemates are pigs. But perhaps you should've just said something, instead of stealing the flour, pan and some...

This week’s episode of Survivor begins at the Espada tribe after their Tribal Council. Dan thanks the tribe for keeping him, but Chase confesses that it may not have been the best move. It’s going to be a “hard pill to swallow” if Dan costs them a challenge. Dan, however, is not the next target. Chase tells NaOnka and Holly that Alina has to go next. NaOnka agrees, saying that Alina has eyes that just burn through a person, so she can’t be trusted. Over at La Flor, all Marty can say is, “Wow!” Jill says they would have voted however Sash’s alliance wanted if he had just told them. Marty tells the camera that it took huge balls to pull the move he did (not playing the Hidden Immunity Idol), but something...

On the latest "Survivor: Nicaragua," someone looks like a pretty big chump.
After voting Kelly B. and Yve off, the tribes are in a bit of unrest. Alina is the new target at Espada and Marty is mad he was targeted. He also wonders why Jane has flipped to the youngsters. He confronts her and she just laughs about voting for Marty. It's kinda weird and definitely makes him suspicious.
Reward Challenge
A defender is on a perch in a big pool while the other tribe leap at the defender and throw a ball in a net. First tribe to score 5 points wins a reward that is a Nicaraguan farm experience with horseback riding and a big fresh breakfast.
La Flor sits out Jane and puts up Fabio as the defender. Chase is Espada's defender. The first miss is Marty, then Fabio deflects Holly's. Dan totally biffs his and...

"Survivor: Nicaragua" had a double elimination Wednesday night (Oct. 20) and Kelly Bruno was one of the victims. Perceived as a huge threat to get sympathy votes because of her artificial leg, Kelly nevertheless says she was thrilled to have had the chance. You can also read our exit Q&A with Yve Rojas here.
Are you glad you did "Survivor"?
"I'm so thrilled I had the opportunity to be on "Survivor." It was a lot harder than I was expecting. It's a lot easier to watch from your couch at home. It's a different story being out there. It definitely made me a stronger person."
Were you surprised to watch the show and see all the stuff your tribemates were saying about you behind your back?

No one was safe on "Survivor: Nicaragua" this week as both tribes were required to vote out a member at Tribal Council. The La Flor tribe initially had a tie vote between Marty and Kelly B, but in the second vote chose to send Kelly B home because they considered her the bigger threat. They felt that because she possesses a prosthetic leg, she would get the sympathy vote and the $1 million if she made it to the final three. Et talks to the 26-year-old student med student from Durham, Nc about her trials and tribulations in Nicaragua. Et: When you signed on to do "Survivor," how did you think the other contestants would respond to your prosthetic leg? Kelly B: Mostly, I was expecting a little hesitation -- [of them] being unsure of what I was capable of. I think that is why I went into it trying to prove myself...

This week’s episode of Survivor begins at Espada after yet another Tribal Council and the ouster of Tyrone. There is a storm rolling in, which Dan can not abide. He wants to quit because he can’t deal with another twenty days of rain. Holly tries to encourage him, but confesses to the camera that quitting is the easy way out. “You’ve signed up for something — suck it up and finish!” Yve and Holly collect wood, when Yve asks why she wasn’t let in on the tribe voting for Tyrone. She would have went along without a fuss, so she what’s to know what’s up. Holly says that she and Dan weren’t so sure Yve would vote with them because they thought she and Tyrone had an alliance. Yve assures Holly that she didn’t.

Two people were sent home, and from my vantage point they were the wrong two people. More on that later.

Let me explain why we have to have double tribal councils. When the show first started we had 16 contestants. That is still the perfect number if you want to vote one person out each week and have a final two scenario at the last tribal council. To be clear — we Love starting with sixteen people.

"Survivor: Nicaragua" had a big shake up when two people were sent home -- we were pretty bummed that it was Kelly Bruno and Yve Rojas.
Challenge
The tribes are playing amongst themselves for an individual immunity necklace and each tribe is sending someone home tonight. Ooooh. The challenge is digging for a rope ring that is tossed into a basket behind their backs. There are three rings to be found, caught and put on a rack. The winner from each tribe will square off for a reward -- reward is a ring toss and the reward is a feast. The winning tribe gets to go to Tribal first, then gets to watch the other tribe's council while they eat their feast. Nice.
Espada goes first. Ben, Alina and Holly are neck and neck for the win and Holly pulls it out. Wow, good for you older lady! When La Flor goes,...

Survivor: Nicaragua was flipped on its head with the tribal mix up. In our review, we tackled the survivors switching tribes and Tyrone's surprise ouster. Our Round table writers convened to discuss the important events of last night's episode.
What should NaOnka have been thinking? What was Marty thinking? What's with Marty's hair?
We're hoping to hear plenty from our readers as well.
Kill and eat the chicken or spare it for more eggs in the future?
Kakdaddy: Was I the only one wondering why they didn't leave the chickens and kill the rooster?
Quiet Pool: They had what? Three? If you're hungry, eat one. More food will come along, don't starve yourself if you don't have to.
Lady Gaga: I'm ok with killing one of the chickens now. Survivor is full of surprises, especially with the formation of new tribes, so it benefited the current tribe...

The theme of this week’s episode of Survivor titled “Turf Wars” was the surprises the castaways somehow did not see coming.
Marty and Jud (among others) were shocked that the tribes were being mixed up. Tyrone was stunned that his aggressive attitude and petulance over the chicken got him voted off. Despite both of these occurrences being Survivor staples, none of the contestants saw them coming.
Leading up to tonight’s episode, privately I bemoaned the fact that CBS was airing advertisements for Survivor announcing the tribe switch-up. I’m the type of fan who does not like to watch the previews if I can avoid them because it makes even the smallest of twists more interesting to me (yes, this makes watching football on Sunday’s challenging). The fact is, in my 21st season of watching, not every twist is surprising anymore.
After the fact, however, I have to give the producers credit.

Tyrone Davis is too abrasive when the tribes are switched up and the young 'uns send him home on the latest "Survivor: Nicaragua."
Post-Tribal
The oldies aren't too sad that Jimmy T. was sent packing. They dispense with the post-tribal within the first five minutes. Luckily, when they get to the challenge, Jeff switches the tribes up.

The nice thing about 'Survivor' (Wed., 8Pm Et on CBS) is that the contestants are always surprised by the show. Every season, the producers introduce a new twist. And every season, the players are shocked when this happens. Maybe the requirement for being on 'Survivor' should be actually watching the show beforehand, so that people know what they're getting into.
[Warning: Spoiler alert.]
Once again, Jeff Probst announced a sudden rule change, and some of the players predictably freaked out. Until this point, the two tribes were divided by age. But Jeff told the players to "drop their buffs," and the teams were changed. Jane, Jill, and Marty went to La Flor. Meanwhile, Alina, Benry, Chase, and NaOnka joined Espada. But the youngsters weren't too thrilled about their new team.

On the latest "Survivor: Nicaragua" episode, the old and young battle is finished as new tribes are formed. We don't know how they decide to make the new tribes, but it looks like Marty is none too popular with his new tribe, especially Brenda.
Do you think this was planned all along? Or is this a product of the fact that the oldies are having a heck of a time winning any challenges, even the ones that aren't as physically taxing?
And will the new alignment mean that Alina and Kelly B. are saved? They have definitely been on the outs with their tribe and we would have to think they would shore up an alliance with some of the oldies fairly quickly.
"Survivor: Nicaragua" airs Wednesday nights at 8 p.m. Et/Pt on CBS.
