The horror TV series Z Nation was produced by The Asylum (a company best known for the Sharknado franchise and mockbusters) and aired on Syfy for five seasons, running for a total of 68 episodes from September 12, 2014 to December 28, 2018. After that show wrapped up, a prequel series called Black Summer ran for two seasons (released in 2019 and 2021) on the Netflix streaming service. If you’ve been wondering when Black Summer is going to return for a third season… well, it looks like it’s not going to, because the folks at What’s on Netflix have confirmed that Netflix quietly “ghost cancelled” the show. But a new post on The Asylum’s X account indicates that Z Nation might be getting a revival! The post promises that a big announcement is coming soon…

When watching Superhost, there was an overwhelming feeling of jealousy that Gracie Gillam was granted such a wonderful character to bring to life. A role that allowed her the freedom to, let’s say express herself, and it was a challenge she rose to – and then some. To mark the film’s home ent release, we had the pleasure of speaking to the actress, as she tells us about her process, and what it was like getting into the head of a character so twisted and unpredictable.
Watch the full interview with Gracie here:

With their follower count dwindling, travel vloggers Teddy and Claire pivot to creating viral content around their most recent “superhost,” Rebecca, who wants more from the duo than a great review.

Superhost is the third film by writer/director Brandon Christensen (Still/Born) and the first that wasn’t co-written with Colin Minihan. It’s also the first that doesn’t revolve around parenthood. How well has he managed to change things up? And can he bring something new to a pair of well-worn plots, the Airbnb from hell and YouTubers getting more of a story than they bargained for?
Teddy and Claire are co-hosts of the YouTube channel Superhost! as well as being a couple off-screen. He’s even planning to propose to her when they film their next segment.
But all is not well in the world of Airbnb reviews. Their subscriber count has been dropping due to their unsensational content. They rent a remote cabin only to find that the access code has been changed.

To mark the release of Superhost on 4th April, we’ve been given 1 copy to give away on Blu-ray.
Pack your bags and get ready for a fun-filled horror ride with travel vloggers Teddy. Like and subscribe to their Superhost channel and share their adventures.
We join the Superhost influencer couple as they embark on their latest video review, and they’re hoping this is the one that can earn them more subscribers. A house in the woods could be the perfect opportunity to create new content and attract new followers. But is there more than meets the eye with Rebecca their host with the most…?
Slowly they begin to realise that something isn’t quite right with Rebecca, and as they start to investigate, they discover more than they bargained for. It’s not just a five-star review she’s after, there’s something far more sinister at play…...

A few weeks ago, Brandon Christensen’s latest genre offering, Superhost, made its streaming debut exclusively on the Shudder platform, and fans from all over have been falling in love with Christensen’s hilariously unsettling vacation from hell. Written, directed, produced, and edited by Christensen, Superhost stars Gracie Gillam, Sara Canning, Osric Chau, and Barbara Crampton. Daily Dead recently had the opportunity to chat with the multi-hyphenate about the real-life inspiration behind the story of Superhost, his experiences collaborating with his cast, and more.
And if you haven’t had a chance to check it out yet, be sure to watch Superhost now that it’s currently available on Shudder.
So great to speak with you, Brandon. I really loved this, and everyone was great here. But Gracie to me, holy crap—she really impressed me. I've seen her pop up in other things, but this to me was a whole new level for her.

Claire (Sara Canning) and Teddy (Osrric Chau) run a website dedicated to reviewing holiday homes. Most such sites have a short shelf life and they’re struggling to keep their numbers up, which has them tempted to take a more clickbait-focused approach, being more extreme in the opinions they express and exploiting their hosts. They’ve picked a bad time to do it.
The latest house they’ll be writing about is a spacious property which, horror fans will not be surprised to note, is set out in remote woodland. This isn’t entirely coincidental, as Teddy has something he wants to say to Claire and he’s been waiting to find the right place to do it. They’re both impressed by the size and general quality of the house, but there are a few minor problems, like one of the two toilets not working. Host Rebecca (Gracie Gillam) is incredibly apologetic and deals.

In a world where bullying has evolved into a more technological savvy beast, it’s important for movies to shine a light on the emotional damage that lingers long after school lunches have been flipped and ridicule has been doled out – but Some Kind Of Hate isn’t that movie. Adam Egypt Mortimer’s ultra-violent anti-bullying PSA certainly attacks the slasher genre from a new, unique angle, but an overwhelming theme of repressed hatred isn’t explored farther than a generic understanding that bullying is bad. The characters are all rather slight, and while Mortimer’s team delivers some wild bouts of skin-slitting gore, there’s just too much pulsating hate to understand what message this first-time director is trying to convey.
Some Kind Of Hate takes us to Mind’s Eye, an isolated refuge where wayward teens are sent to learn the ways of a more enlightened path. Lincoln...

*full disclosure: an online screener of this film was provided by Rlj Entertainment. **there are some spoilers in this review. Director: Adam Egypt Mortimer. Writers: Brian DeLeeuw and Adam Egypt Mortimer. Cast: Maestro Harrell, Grace Phipps, Spencer Breslin, Sierra McCormick and Lexi Atkins. Some Kind of Hate is an upcoming horror release. To be distributed by Rlj Entertainment, the film had its World Premiere at the Stanley Film Festival, this year. Very intense in nature, the film's story revolves around bullying and a broken protagonist. He summons a demon for protection, dumbfoundedly. From here, the film turns into a slasher feature and gore aspects are a wrist-slashing spectacle. However, a few questions remain, including whether the villain was dispatched by herself or by another. Did she cut her own throat? The supernatural elements are prominent. And, Some Kind of Hate is a satisfying revenge story. Lincoln (Ronen Rubinstein) comes from a broken home.

Icon Film Distribution and FrightFest have announced a further three films – all of which are personal faves of mine from this years festival – which will be released under the curated banner FrightFest Presents. The new titles are:
Night of the Living Deb, directed by Kyle Rankin starring Maria Thayer (Forgetting Sarah Marshall), Michael Cassidy (Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice), Christopher Marquette (Just Friends, The Girl Next Door) and Ray Wise (Infestation, Twin Peaks).
After a girls’ night out, endearingly awkward Deb wakes up in the apartment of the most attractive guy in Portland, Maine. She’s thrilled, but can’t remember much of what got her there. Ryan only knows it was a mistake, and ushers her out the door into a full-scale zombie apocalypse. Now, a walk of shame becomes a fight for survival as the mismatched pair discovers that the only thing scarier than trusting someone with your life…...

As a devoted lover of the current indie horror scene, there is no horror movie I was anticipating more this year than Tales of Halloween, an anthology film with contributions from 11 of the strongest voices working in the genre today. This is my event film. This is my Avengers. And it does not disappoint. Tales of Halloween isn’t just one of the best anthologies of the last 30 years, but also among the best Halloween-themed horror movies ever made. It’s funny and bloody and wicked and affectionate towards the genre in a way that few other films are. It’s the most fun I’ve had at a horror movie in a long, long time.
Taking place all on the same Halloween night, Tales offers up ten stories of slashers, aliens, killer kids, monsters, ghosts, witches, and the devil as played by Barry Bostwick. The list of talent...

In two weeks, vampires, cannibals, Halloween frights and more will grace the screen at the Muvico Theater in Rosemont, Illinois for Bruce Cambell's Horror Film Festival. Now a telekinetic kid and and an apocalypse have joined the killer lineup, as both June and JeruZalem will make their U.S. premieres at the festival.
Press Release: "Chicago, Illinois (August 6, 2015) – The second annual Bruce Campbell Horror Film Festival presented by Wizard World, running August 20 – 23 at the Muvico Theater in Rosemont, Illinois (9701 Bryn Mawr Ave., Rosemont), is proud to announce the addition of two more films to the already bursting schedule.
June, starring Casper Van Dien (Starship Troopers) and Kennedy Brice (The Walking Dead), tells the story of nine-year-old June (Brice), who has been shuffled in and out of foster homes for years. Though she tries to be good, no matter where she goes a trail of chaos and terror seems to follow.

It may only be July, but it can take a while to get in just the right mood for certain annual festivities. So, thank goodness for the early arrival of a trailer for Tales Of Halloween – an anthology horror movie featuring ten different segments, directed by eleven different directors.
“Ten stories are woven together by their shared theme of Halloween night in an American suburb, where ghouls, imps, aliens and axe murderers appear for one night only, to terrorise unsuspecting residents.”
In many respects, an advantage of a horror anthology is the fact that it allows for many filmmakers to showcase their work, giving the whole project a fascinating blend of flavours. However, what is notable about Tales Of Halloween, is that – despite – featuring the work of very individual directors, there is an overall tone that snakes through each one, making it feel very much like part of a larger whole.
