Barbara Chai Chef Susur Lee’s Hong Kong fisherman fried lobster with chili garlic and Asian slaw, at the Chinese Wedding Banquet for the LuckyRice Festival.
At the LuckyRice Festival this week in New York, I feasted on “Eight Auspicious Dishes” at a “Chinese Wedding Banquet” event prepared by Top Star Chef Susur Lee. Except these weren’t your typical Chinese wedding dishes.
Instead, I was delighted to bite into a dumpling and taste fois gras. That slow braised short...

I really enjoyed this season of Top Chef Masters, which came to a close last night with a heart-stopping final showdown between three of the strongest chefs in the competition. It was only fitting that the season finale ("Top Chef Master") would ask each of these master chefs to reflect back on their lives and their careers and pull together a final three-course meal for the critics that reflected where they had been and where they were going. Happy childhoods, struggles, and painful memories--as well as creative awakening--were all demonstrated on the plate as Marcus Samuelsson, Susur Lee, and Rick Moonen faced off for the title of Top Chef Master and a substantial donation to the charity they were playing for. So how did they do? And who walked out of the Top Chef Masters kitchen as the ultimate winner? Let's discuss. At this point in the competition, I'm glad...

Marcus Samuelsson won Top Chef Masters 2 and $100,000 for his charity, the Unicef Tap Project, which raises money to "to bring clean and accessible water to millions of children around the world," according to its web site. He beat the other two finalists, Rick Moonen and Susur Lee, by half a star, as they tied with 17 stars each for the final, three-course, autobiographical meal. Guest judge Tom Colicchio called Marcus' second course "brilliant"...

"Top Chef Masters" wrapped up its second season and crowned its second king.
Although the finale seemed to lack the cutthroat competitiveness of the usual "Top Chef" series, there was still plenty of suspense considering each chef delivered exceptional menus with many highs.
It was Marcus Samuelsson that bested seafood king Rick Moonen and fan/chef favorite Susur Lee at their own games, bringing African food into the fine dining world.
The competition was close, however, and Samuelsson won by a mere half point -- 17.5 over Lee and Moonen's 17 points each.
The three chefs were tasked with bringing together three courses that represented their journeys as chefs. First course would be their first significant food memory, second course was inspired by a meal that made them decide to become chefs and the final course would describe themselves as chefs.
Although various parts of dishes garnered praise from the judges (Rick's scallop,...

Let us start by admitting that we’re still disappointed that French culinary genius Hubert Keller was not a contestant this season on Top Chef Masters. Add to that how bummed we were that local culinary queen and founding Food Network maven Susan Feniger (aka one of the Two Hot Tamales) got the boot a couple of weeks ago, and we’re a little torn about the way this season is shaking out.
Needless to say, we’re having a hard time deciding who we want to take home the title of Top Chef Master. From what we can tell, Susur Lee is one of those once in a lifetime creative visionaries, but his particular brand of cooking doesn’t really whet our appetites. Marcus Samuelsson seems like a nice enough guy and a talented chef, but he doesn’t seem to overwhelm the judges with innovative cooking. Then there’s Rick Moonen,...

If you've ever been on a working television or film set, you know the mad rush that the lunch call is as the cast and crew head towards a makeshift dining room--usually set amid film equipment and discarded set pieces--to grab a brief respite before heading back into the madness. Caterers specialize in delivering fast, fresh, and tasty grub that's all ready to go when the crew is meant to go on break and it's a brutal business. So that rhythm and pacing would be the perfect challenge for the five new master chefs entering the Top Chef kitchen this week: Rick Tramonto, Maria Hines, Debbie Gold, Joey Adams, and Susur Lee, the latter of whom was named one of Food & Wine's Ten Chefs of the Millennium. (No small matter, that.) On this week's episode of Top Chef Masters ("Cast and Crew Meal"), the master chefs were tasked with creating...
