- Was a candidate for the Democratic nomination for president in the 1976 election but lost to Jimmy Carter.

- He spent his teen years at his grandparents' Indiana farm. He majored in agriculture at Purdue University, and served for two years in the Army.
- He was the main author of the 25th Amendment, which was ratified in 1967. It established procedures for appointing a vice president if a vacancy occurs. It also set rules for replacing the president should the incumbent become seriously disabled.
- In 1954, he was elected to the Indiana House of Representatives. He completed a law degree from Indiana University while running the farm and serving in the legislature.
- He co-wrote what would have been the 27th Amendment, the Equal Rights Amendment, mandating equal treatment of women in all fields. He then produced Title IX of the 1972 Education Amendments; it banned gender discrimination in schools receiving federal funding.
