New Delhi-born Indian Canadian filmmaker, Nisha Pahuja, has shared how Ranjit, the Jharkhand rice farmer whose fight for justice for his gang-raped daughter is the story of her Oscar-nominated documentary feature, ‘To Kill A Tiger’, did not get an American visa when the film was theatrically released in the US in September last year.
“We tried to get visas for him and his incredible daughter back in September for the US around the time of our theatrical launch,” Pahuja says in an Instagram post. “They were denied. It was a heartbreaking experience for all of us.”
The post accompanies a picture of Pahuja in red gown with Ranjit, outfitted in a black tuxedo, in the backstage area of the Oscars venue, the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. “Without doubt, one of the proudest moments of my life,” Pahuja writes.

In a village in the Indian state of Jharkhand, Ranjit and his wife Jiganti keep vigil at night over their home, a simple dwelling with packed-earth floors. If they don’t, anything could happen: Their neighbors have threatened to kill the couple and their children.
Ranjit and Jiganti have done nothing to warrant such terror, other than to go against village customs. After their 13-year-old daughter Kiran was sexually assaulted by three local youths, they resisted intense pressure to remain silent — to excuse the crime and the perpetrators. Instead, they demanded justice.
Their struggle plays out in the documentary To Kill a Tiger, directed by Nisha Pahuja and executive produced by a prominent team including Dev Patel, Mindy Kaling, poet Rupi Kaur, and Dr. Atul Gawande, the surgeon and bestselling author. Mindy Kaling and Dev Patel have signed on to executive produce the documentary “To Kill a Tiger,” a gripping story about a father’s pursuit of justice in rural India.
Directed and written by Nisha Pahuja (“The World Before Her”), the film charts the emotional journey of Ranjit, a farmer in Jharkhand, who forces a social reckoning after his 13-year-old daughter is the victim of a gang rape.
“Gender equity and justice within India have been central to my work over the past decade,” said Pahuja. “With ‘To Kill a Tiger,’ I encountered a story that simply had to be told because of the bravery, honesty, and resilience of the family at the heart of it. I’m grateful for Mindy and Dev’s belief in this film and its capacity to empower and serve as a catalyst for change, while building on the work of many activists and organizations.

The future of Being Mortal is up in the air.
Production on the planned comedy-drama film – directed by and starring Aziz Ansari (Master of None) – was suspended earlier this year, following an incident involving one of the film’s stars, Bill Murray.
The Ghostbusters star initially appeared to downplay the severity of the incident, claiming he had done “something I thought was funny” on set, but it “wasn’t taken that way”.
However, in October it was reported that the incident involved Murray allegedly straddling a "much younger" female production assistant and kissing her on the mouth.
The future of the project remains unclear, with some reports suggesting that the film could be finished without Murray’s involvement.
In the days since the report was published, others including actors Seth Green, Rob Schneider and Geena Davis have shared their own negative experiences with Murray in the past.

Keke Palmer has spoken out after her film Being Mortal was shut down amid allegations against her co-star, Bill Murray.
In April, Searchlight Pictures suspended production on the film after Murray was accused of “inappropriate behaviour”.
The film, which was Aziz Ansari’s directorial debut, is based on surgeon Atul Gawande’s 2014 book, Being Mortal: Medicine and What Matters in the End. Ansari also wrote the film and was set to co-star alongside Murray, Palmer and Seth Rogen.
Since the sudden end of production, no further work has taken place on Being Mortal and it is currently unclear as to whether it will ever be completed.
In a recent interview, Palmer shared her thoughts about the scrapped project and expressed her hope that Ansari could find a way to make it work.
“If somebody could figure it out, it would be Aziz,” she told reporters at Variety.

New details about Bill Murray’s suspension from the Searchlight Pictures film “Being Mortal” emerged from a recent report from Puck.
On April 18, Searchlight paused production on Aziz Ansari’s directorial debut “Being Mortal” after a complaint was filed against star Bill Murray over inappropriate behavior. According to Puck reporter Eriq Gardner, Searchlight is no longer making the film.
While there were no details about the allegations, some speculated that Murray’s co-star Keke Palmer was the victim of the alleged inappropriate behavior. But according to Puck, Murray was “particularly friendly with one female production staffer,” whose name was withheld from the story. Gardner wrote:
This much younger woman, Murray felt, had been flirting with him. So at one moment when the two were in close proximity near a bed that was part of the production, Murray started kissing her body and straddling her. It was perhaps an unclear bit of physical comedy,...

The details of the encounter between Bill Murray and a production staffer that led Disney’s Searchlight unit to abruptly shut down production of Aziz Ansari’s directorial debut “Being Mortal” in April have been revealed in a report from Puck.
Murray, 72, had become “particularly friendly” with a much younger woman on the production staff — not actress Kate Palmer, as some speculated — and believed she was flirting with him, the report said. At one point, when they were near a bed that was used on the set, Murray started kissing her body and straddling her, Puck revealed.
Both were wearing masks due to Covid protocols, the story said.

Almost six months after Bill Murray’s alleged “inappropriate behaviour” on the set of Being Mortal led to the production being shut down, details of the incident have emerged.
Being Mortal is Aziz Ansari’s directorial debut, and is based on surgeon Atul Gawande’s 2014 book, Being Mortal: Medicine and What Matters in the End. As well as directing, Ansari – who helms his own Netflix show Master of None – wrote and was set to star in the film, alongside Seth Rogen.
In a new report from Puck writer Eriq Gardner, multiple sources describe Murray, 72, allegedly straddling and kissing a “much younger” female production staffer who “interpreted his actions as entirely sexual” and was “horrified”.
The woman is not named, but the writer claims she is not actor Keke Palmer, who also stars in the film, as has been speculated.

Bill Murray is speaking out after production on his film “Being Mortals” was suspended last week due to a complaint about the actor’s behavior, saying the experience has been “quite an education for me.”
In a Saturday interview with CNBC, Murray blamed the incident on a “difference of opinion” between himself and a female collaborator on the film. “I did something I thought was funny and it wasn’t taken that way,” he said.
“As of now we are talking and we are trying to make peace with each other,” he continued, without naming the woman or identifying her position. “We are both professionals, we like each others’ work, we like each other I think and if we can’t really get along and trust each other there’s no point in going further working together or making the movie as well. It’s been quite an education for me.

Actor Bill Murray has spoken for the first time about his role in the production suspension of the film Being Mortal after a complaint was lodged against him.

Bill Murray is at the root of a complaint about “inappropriate behavior” that led to the suspension of production on Searchlight Pictures’ “Being Mortal,” the feature directorial debut of Aziz Ansari.
The unspecified complaint was not made against Ansari, who along with his production partner Youree Henley is working with Searchlight to determine what to do next.
Deadline first reported the news, citing unnamed sources. Representatives for Searchlight Pictures declined comment to TheWrap.
In a letter to cast and crew on Wednesday, the studio said that after becoming aware of the complaint, it “immediately looked into it” and has now “decided that production cannot continue at this time.”
Ansari and Henley are in close contact with the studio to “figure out” when filming might resume, the letter says. Though Searchlight didn’t describe that as a guaranteed outcome, instead saying only that “out hope is to resume production.”

Searchlight Pictures has suspended production on “Being Mortal,” a new movie starring Aziz Ansari, Seth Rogen and Bill Murray, over complaints about Murray’s inappropriate behavior on set.
The studio sent a letter to the movie’s cast and crew on Wednesday, informing them filming had been suspended due to an unspecified complaint. “Late last week, we were made aware of a complaint, and we immediately looked into it,” the note said. Though sources at the time indicated the production halt was not Covid-19 related, nor did it pertain to Ansari or Rogen, it was ambiguous what caused the shutdown.
Searchlight Pictures declined to comment on the investigation. It is not clear if Murray will stay on board the film, or if he will be recast. Since principal photography started at the end of March, nearly half of the movie had been shot before production was ground to a halt this week.

Aziz Ansari’s directorial debut film “Being Mortal” is suffering production delays after a complaint was filed against star Bill Murray over inappropriate behavior. The specifics of the complaint are not known.
Deadline reported that Searchlight Pictures had no comment on the ongoing investigation. Ansari is writing, directing, and starring in the film, alongside Seth Rogen. Neither is named in the official complaint, which was filed last week.
Production on “Being Mortal” was officially halted April 18 and will remain suspended as the investigation continues.
Based on Atul Gawande’s nonfiction book “Being Mortal: Medicine and What Matters in the End,” the film started principal photography March 28 and was reportedly halfway through production prior to the allegation against Murray. The film was set for a 2023 release date.
Oscar nominee Murray previously spoke out about workplace sexual harassment claims amid the #MeToo movement, warning perpetrators that justice has been issued “rather quickly” in modern times.

Daniel Gillies says he has no idea why his Vampire Diaries character of Elijah has resonated so well with fans of that CW smash.
"I'm very lucky," the actor simply told me over the phone yesterday in response to that question.
But ask Gillies about Saving Hope - the NBC drama that premieres tomorrow night at 9/8c - and he can far more easily explain why he's so excited for viewers to see the pilot, which he describes as "one of the best I've ever seen."
"David Wellington is going to be the next Jj Abrams," Gillies said of the show's executive producer, who directed the premiere and who Gillies praises for his "talent and vision," adding: "I'm telling you, this show is really good. It's engaging and compelling and funny and brave all at once."

But that's Paul. He's a good dude.").
Below, I've collected some of the more memorable questions and answers from a fun hour with the man behind Elijah...
What is your favorite thing about playing Elijah?
It's kinda changed. In the beginning, when he was sort of a mercenary, I liked the idea that he posed a threat. That's an interesting idea to play an as actor… as things have transpired, I now like the fact that he's an instrument in this new order of the vampires, this new status quo.
