Netflix drama Top Boy has beaten off competition from Apple TV+’s Slow Horses to win Best Drama Series at the BAFTA TV Awards.
Also competing in the category were the BBC’s Happy Valley and The Gold, but Top Boy walked away with its second award of the night. Earlier in the evening, Jasmine Jobson walked away with a Best Supporting Actress win.
Top Boy, written by Ronan Bennett stars Ashley Walters as drug kingpin Dushane and Kane Robinson as his on-off business partner. The ambitious pair lead a drug operation in an east London council estate. Robinson is shortly up for a Best Actor award for the likes of Brian Cox for Succession, Dominic West for The Crown and Steve Coogan for The Reckoning.
Besides Walters and Robinson, the show has starred the likes of Jobson, Micheal Ward, Little Simz and Araloyin Oshunremi over its five seasons.

“Oppenheimer” cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema won Feature Film at the 38th ASC Awards, March 3 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. The Oscar favorite beat the other four Oscar nominees: “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Maestro,” Poor Things,” and “El Conde”.
This marked van Hoytema’s first ASC win after three nominations (including “Dunkirk” and “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy”) and positions the Dutch-Swedish cinematographer for his first Oscar win. Significantly, “Oppenheimer” represents the culmination of his experimental IMAX collaboration with director Christopher Nolan. The duo achieved a new kind of intimate spectacle with this psychological thriller about physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer (Best Actor nominee Cillian Murphy), the “father of the atomic bomb.” Van Hoytema used the large-format IMAX camera to explore the landscape of faces; namely, Oppenheimer’s in color from his perspective and Salieri-like adversary Admiral Lewis Strauss’ (Best Supporting Actor nominee Robert Downey Jr.) in black-and-white from his.

‘Deadpool 3’ teaser trailer just got released during the Superbowl as was predicted and while we are trying to make sense of the first impressions of what appears to be the phenomenal next installment in the MCU, the teaser trailer also showed as a glimpse into what appears the movie’s main villain, Cassandra Nova.
That Cassandra Nova will be the villain of the movie was rumored back in August 2023, something that we’ve reported on previously, but we also speculated that due to this Charles Xavier might have a role in the movie as well. For those of you unaware of who Cassandra is, she has a pretty gruesome and heartbreaking backstory. Cassandra was Xavier’s twin while both were gestation in the womb. Xavier recognized Cassandra as being the so-called “Mummudrai” by the Shi’ar, an equal and opposite spirit of Professor Charles Xavier. Due to Xavier’s genetic potential,...

The American Society of Cinematographers has unveiled the nominations for its 38th annual ASC Awards, honoring the year’s best in feature film, documentary and television cinematography.
The society’s marquee Theatrical Feature Film nominees are chock-full of awards-season favorite pics, with one surprise. Edward Lachman is up for the Netflix pic El Conde, joining the likes of Matthew Libatique for Maestro, Rodrigo Prieto for Killers of the Flower Moon, Robbie Ryan for Poor Things, Hoyte van Hoytema for Oppenheimer.
Prieto also lensed the year’s No. 1 movie, Barbie, but missed the ASC cut today.
The group’s film winner has gone on to claim the Academy Award nearly half of the time — 17 times in its 37 years — but not last year. Mandy Walker won the ASC’s top film prize in 2023, but the Academy Award went to James Friend for All Quiet on the Western Front.

Zakiya Dalila Harris’ novel “The Other Black Girl” has hit the small screen in ten episodes filled with songs that support the story’s underlying message of compromising identity and Blackness in a majority-white workplace. Developed by Harris and Rashida Jones, who contributed the intro montage, to Episode 7 set to Anita Baker’s “Sweet Love,” the series crosses multiple genres from comedy to thriller and provides social commentary on how minority Poc employees compromise and navigate the social system of corporate America.
Set to Sza, TLC, Busta Rhymes, H.E.R., Janelle Monae and more, many scenes in the show become even stronger with the songs in the background. Co-showrunners Gus Hickey and Jordan Reddout left the ending open for a potential second season. The suspense and humor go hand in hand with the soundtrack for “The Other Black Girl.”

It’s still wild to think that we have Drake to thank for the revival of Top Boy, Ronan Bennett’s engrossing crime saga that draws to a close on September 7. Like so many of us, the Grammy-winning rapper got caught up in a show, only to find out it had been canceled — in this case, Channel 4 dropped Top Boy, which starred Ashley Walters and Kane Robinson, in 2014 after two four-episode seasons. But, unlike the vast majority of the TV-viewing public, Drake had the influence to set a revival in motion, bringing back many original cast members and drawing a slew of new talents like Micheal Ward and Simbiatu Ajikawo (aka Little Simz).

Through the story of drug leaders and best friends Dushane (Ashley Walters) and Sully (Kane ‘Kano’ Robinson), viewers witnessed how the dreams of young men wanting to provide for their family and overcome the poor hand they’ve been dealt leads to a life of crime – the only option they feel is open to them. From building a drug empire to violently fighting – and often killing – those who threaten to take their positions, the Summerhouse Estate has gone through a lot to make those dreams come true. But in the final season, Top Boy shows those dreams becoming closer to a nightmare.

It all comes down to this. The final season of Netflix's "Top Boy" is just days away. After more than 10 years, the streamer will be airing the final season, and it's bound to be an intense one.
For the uninitiated, the show follows drug dealers Sully (Kane Robinson) and Dushane (Ashley Walters) as they navigate a scene of gang violence in Hackney, East London. The show first aired on the UK's Channel 4 in 2011 before being canceled. Drake then revived the show in 2017, with the help of Netflix, of course.
In the previous seasons, we've seen Sully and Dushane work together to run a drug empire and turn rivals. From turf wars to prison breakouts, there's never been a dull moment, mostly because no character can be fully trusted. There have been some iconic scenes, from the comedic to the downright shocking. Curtis's (Howard Charles) most evil moments rival any TV villain,...

The 2023 BAFTA Film Awards will open Sunday with a music performance from actress and performer Ariana DeBose.
DeBose returns to the BAFTA stage just a year after winning the Best Supporting Actress award for her performance as Anita in Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story. BAFTA said DeBose’s performance will feature “contemporary music” that will be “inspired by this year’s nominees.”
Music performances have regularly popped up at the BAFTA film awards. Last year, Dame Shirley Bassey opened the show with a performance of Diamonds are Forever to mark the 60th anniversary of the James Bond franchise. Circus group Cirque du Soleil has also performed at several editions of the Film Awards.
Other major plans set for the evening include a performance from Mercury Prize-winning rapper Little Simz, and Dame Helen Mirren will lead a tribute to the late Queen Elizabeth II. The...

The new look will see part of the show broadcast live on TV for the first time, Strictly-style backstage celebrity interviews and performances from Ariana DeBose and Little Simz
Is Bafta going Strictly Come Dancing? It may not be such a far-fetched idea, as the British Academy of Film and Television Arts gears up for its annual film awards on Sunday, when a portion of the show will be shown live on BBC One for the first time in a prime time early-evening slot. The awards show will have a new set of producers, a marketable host (actor Richard E Grant), a real-time celebrity interview studio hosted by This Morning’s Alison Hammond, and performances from popular music acts Ariana DeBose and Little Simz. The ceremony will also pack in plenty of big names, including Cate Blanchett, Cynthia Erivo, Jamie Lee Curtis, Rami Malek and Colin Farrell, while the Prince...

The royal family remains a positive ambassador of the British Film and Television Academy despite recent scandals and reports of internal conflicts, BAFTA CEO Jane Millichip told Deadline as she readies the arts charity’s 2023 Film Awards.
Sunday’s awards show will be the former Sky Studios exec’s first as BAFTA CEO after being appointed to the role last summer.
This year’s ceremony will also see the Film Awards leave the Royal Albert Hall for a new home in the Royal Festival Hall at London’s Southbank Centre, alongside the introduction of a refreshed broadcasting schedule featuring live segments for the first time in BAFTA history.
However, in a return to tradition, Prince William, BAFTA President, and Kate Middleton will attend the awards after skipping the ceremony for two consecutive years.

Like Harry Styles, Charli Xcx criticized the Brit Awards’ voting body for failing to nominate any female artists for one of the event’s most prestigious awards.
When asked by the BBC about the snub of female artists in the British Artist of the Year category, Charli Xcx responded, “I was an album cycle and I had a Number One album [Crash]… so yeah there’s many of us… We’re doing everything right, I don’t think it’s our fault, I think it might be theirs,” alluding to the...

Awards ceremonies like the Brits can always do better, but by now they’re just an excuse for a party
There was a five-headed elephant in the room at what was otherwise a strangely flat affair at the Brit Awards. As is tradition with music ceremonies, a row flared up over representation after the nominations were announced. The gender-neutral Artist of the Year category was entirely made up of male artists: Central Cee, Fred Again, George Ezra, Harry Styles and Stormzy.
The switch from gendered categories was implemented in 2021 after Sam Smith – who came out as non-binary two years earlier – urged awards shows to be “reflective of the society we live in”. At the first non-gendered awards show in 2022, Adele walked away with the Artist of the Year prize, for which Little Simz, Sam Fender, Dave and Ed Sheeran had also been nominated.
Women fared well across the board, with Olivia Rodrigo winning Best International Song, Wolf Alice taking home the British Group prize, Becky Hill for British Dance Act,...

Los Angeles and London-based management and production company 42 has acquired Ob Management, an integrated director management and production firm for commercials and music videos.
Ob founder Otis Bell will stay on to helm the company alongside COO Frida Nilsson. The company will be rebranded as “Ob/42” and continue to operate as a distinct entity within the 42 group. 42 bosses Marc Allen, Josh Varney and Ben Pugh will sit on the board of Ob/42 going forward.
The acquisition includes Probation — which Bell co-founded in 2011 with Matt Davey — a photo agency representing top photographers working in advertising, music and entertainment, which sits alongside Ob Management. It will also include Ob’s U.S. office, Obsidian/Reprobates, headed up by EP Anna Heinrich, which will be consolidated and rebranded under the Ob/42 name as a global identity.
The deal continues 42’s ongoing expansion, which includes the recent hire of former Netflix and Tiger Aspect Productions...
