The limited series, which premieres on Aug. 10, is based on Patrick Radden Keefe's 2017 New Yorker article "The Family That Built an Empire of Pain" and Barry Meier's book "Pain Killer: An Empire of Deceit and the Origin of America's Opioid Epidemic," which both chronicle how Purdue Pharma - led by the Sackler family - obscured the truth about their product OxyContin.

In the second episode of Netflix’s Painkiller, two sales representatives (West Duchovny and Dina Shihabi) call in on various doctors’ offices to push a pill that promises to reduce pain and enhance quality of life. Like all good sales reps, they come bearing gifts, among them a cute stuffed toy in the shape of a pill, a recurring motif throughout the series meant to represent danger disguised as something innocuous. The drug in question is OxyContin, and the sales reps work for Purdue Pharma, the company that, under the ownership of the now infamous Sackler family, marketed the opioid to millions of Americans to devastating results.
The plot unfolds as Edie Flowers (Uzo Aduba), a jaded state investigator, recounts her findings to the lawyers trying to build a case against the Sacklers. The series attempts to address every possible angle of the scandal, from the company that created the drug,...

Netflix’s upcoming limited series “Painkiller” is lifting the veil on America’s opioid crisis, investigating the role of one family in making OxyContin “the No. 1 opioid in the country.”
“All of human behavior is essentially comprised of two things: run from pain, run toward pleasure; pain, pleasure,” Matthew Broderick’s Richard Sackler said in the series’ official trailer. “If we place ourselves right there between pain and pleasure, we will never have to worry about money again.”
As the Sackler dynasty’s Purdue Pharma recruits a batch of fresh-faced sales workers who they claim will convince doctors to “take pain seriously,” an investor from the U.S. attorneys office (Uzo Aduba) is determined to take the family responsible for countless deaths down.
“You lie, you hurt people, you go down,” Aduba said. “They are doing the exact same thing as crack dealers but they are getting rewarded it.”

Netflix dropped the trailer for its upcoming Christmas-themed series, “Merry Happy Whatever,” on Monday, starring Dennis Quaid as Don Quinn, the father of a family that likes things done their own way during the holiday. Well, his way.

Fred Savage makes his talk-show host debut Sunday on Fox’s “What Just Happened??! With Fred Savage” — a very real aftershow based on a very not real sci-fi series called “The Flare.” Well, not real for now, at least, as the “Wonder Years” alum is thinking maybe his show could help its fake lead-in get the green light.
“I’ll be honest, we’re hoping that it’s not so fake,” Savage — who hosts, co-created and executive produces “What Just Happened??!” — told TheWrap. “I mean, ‘The Flare’ does exist — just a scene at a time. The books are obviously completely made up, but the show itself, like, we have a real cast, a real director, and I think it’s a good show.”
“The Flare” is based on fictional author Tj Whitford’s sci-fi book series, “The Moon is the Sun at Night,” which has been a favorite of Savage’s since childhood.

Rob Lowe will be the first guest on Fox’s upcoming parody after-show “What Just Happened??! with Fred Savage,” which will reunite the stars of the previously-canceled “The Grinder.”
Framed to be a talk show to discuss the events after Fox’s made-up sci-fi drama, “The Flare,” “What Just Happened??! with Fred Savage” will invite special guests like Lowe to analyze what took place on the fictional show’s latest episode (akin to AMC’s “Talking Dead and “Talking Saul”), and will include as set visits to “The Flare,” interviews with the “cast,” and fan discussions.
Kevin Zegers (“Dirty John”), Guillermo Diaz (“Scandal”) and Shiri Appleby (“UnReal”) are among those tapped to play the “cast” of “The Flare.”

[Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers from “The Good Doctor” Season 2, Episode 9, “Empathy.”]
“The Good Doctor” tackled its thorniest storytelling challenge yet with an episode that asks its characters — and viewers — to sympathize with a pedophile. However, “Empathy” sought to make a strong distinction between a person who is suffering from the psychiatric disorder of pedophilia and those who actually molest children.
Distressed patient George Reynolds (Tyler Ritter) is reluctantly attracted to children, but he never acts on those urges and is doing everything possible to eliminate those feelings and behaviors that could endanger kids. Initially, Dr. Morgan Reznik (Fiona Gubelman) treats him as if he were a criminal, whereas Dr. Claire Browne (Antonia Thomas) sees George as having monstrous desires, but he himself is not a monster. However, he is worried the desires will someday make him become one.

Writer-producer Rina Mimoun (Mistresses) has signed an overall deal with CBS Television Studios. Under the pact, she has set up two drama projects at CBS TV Studios’ sister broadcast networks: Under the Bridge, from CBS TV Studios-based Jerry Bruckheimer TV, which has sold to CBS, and Finley & June, written by Mimoun and Anna Fricke, which is in the hopper at the CW.
The overall pact extends Mimoun’s relationship with CBS TV Studios where she co-created and executive produced drama project Playing Dead last season. It went to pilot at the CW starring Tyler Ritter.
In Under the Bridge, penned by Mimoun, when a scandal rocks the medical practice she runs with her husband and their friends, a surgeon rises to the occasion and takes the lead in trying to mend both the practice and her own marriage.
Mimoun executive produces with Jbtv’s Jerry Bruckheimer, Jonathan Littman, and KristieAnne Reed.

Tyler Ritter is revealing the first portraits of his and wife Lelia Parma’s son, Benjamin Parma Ritter, who was born on June 9. The Arrow star is opening up to Et about life as a dad and how the unexpected surprise of becoming a parent has made him more connected to his late father, acting icon John Ritter, who died at 54 from an aortic dissection.
“Some people had braced me for it, saying, ‘It’s going to be the most beautiful moment of your life and probably the hardest moment of your life knowing your dad’s not here,’” Ritter tells Et about preparing for the moment that he would become a father, nearly 14 years after the death of his own. But any hesitation was wiped away the moment his son was born. “It was actually more affirming to see him born,” he says, wondering “if what I’m feeling now for Benjamin is what my dad...

You may think you know where Arrow is going, but you probably don't, according to executive producer Wendy Mericle. When the CW show returns tonight, the team has some serious issues to deal with, even aside from the pretty big problem of Diggle being locked away once again, and the apparent return of Laurel Lance (Katie Cassidy), despite her death last season (but we'll get to her in a minute). Oliver's battle with Prometheus took a particularly dark turn when the bad guy convinced Oliver he was finally about to win, only for Ollie to then realized he had actually put an arrow through Detective Malone (Tyler Ritter), also known as Felicity's (Emily Bett Rickards) boyfriend. The death is a...

Arrow returns for its midseason premiere on Wednesday with a familiar face -- from beyond the grave.

With the DC TV crossover nearly behind us, it’s time to look ahead to next week’s midseason finales. Chief among them is Arrow, which looks to have a game changing episode if there ever were one.
If the footage given in the new trailer is any indication of what’s to come, it looks like we may be granted insight into the scope of Prometheus’ diabolical scheme. In addition to that, we’re hoping for an unmasking because this seems like as good of a time as any to do so – unless, of course, the producers feel like keeping us in suspense for another few months.

The CW has released the first official images from the 101st episode of Arrow (which airs after next week’s crossover), and in them we get to see Oliver Queen back in his season 1 costume. Chances are that this is a flashback to the events of that year rather than him donning it for other reasons, as we’ve previously heard that Prometheus is tied to the hero’s past.
The gallery above also sees Green Arrow come face to face with the villain in the present day, and that’s a battle which promises to be very exciting indeed. After all, it definitely looks like Prometheus is the superior fighter, so Oliver could end up finding himself way in over his head here.

Played by action movie legend Dolph Lundgren, he’s the reason Oliver Queen has travelled to Russia and joined the Bratva in this year’s flashbacks (which are set to be the last, but are also the best we’ve seen in some time).
Things don’t look too good for Oliver in the gallery above, but it’s going to be just as bad in the present as he and the rest of Team Arrow end up squaring off with mysterious baddie, Prometheus. Although only five episodes of the current season of Arrow have aired so far, I feel as if the series has reattained levels of excitement and intrigue that may prove to rival those of season 2, which is often hailed to be the best.
One of the elements contributing to the show’s current success and revitalization is that of the mysterious new villain in Star City, Prometheus. If you ask me, the TV version of him seems like Green Arrow’s equivalent of Zoom. Think about it: His costume reveals no identifying traits whatsoever, his voice is distorted, he accumulates body counts that not too many villains are able to boast, and he was a background player before coming to the forefront in the sixth episode.
