When he made his first feature, Gal Young ‘Un, in 1979, director Victor Nuñez was a pioneer in an American independent film movement still in its early stages. Over the next several decades, Nuñez continued to work on personal projects on his home turf of northern Florida. He worked rewardingly with gifted actors like Ed Harris in A Flash of Green and launched Ashley Judd’s acting career with Ruby in Paradise in 1993. Peter Fonda earned his only Oscar nomination as an actor when he starred in Nuñez’s Ulee’s Gold in 1997.
But Nuñez has not directed a film in over a decade. He returns to the screen with Rachel Hendrix and helps to revitalize the acting career of Lori Singer, still best known for her starring role opposite Kevin Bacon in 1984’s Footloose. Singer, also an accomplished classical musician, had a few other notable acting credits, in Alan Rudolph’s...

As a teenager, you probably wouldn’t expect to come home after a night out with friends to your parents enthusiastically holding up a Netflix copy of One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest, insisting that you watch it with them at that very moment. Indeed, it’s something that can happen. Seeing that film in my vulnerable teenage years certainly left an impression. As a budding movie addict, it contributed deeply to my quest to watch great films, classics as they can be called. As a person, it made me realize the complexities of human nature and how fragile the mind is. My teenage self did recognize its power then to an extent, but re-watching it now so close to its 40th anniversary brings up a lot of new emotions.

I knew I liked the directing team of Moorhead & Benson even before I talked with them. Their new movie Spring blew me away when I saw it at Fantastic Fest in Austin this past September, but when I saw writer and co-director Justin Benson sitting with a coffee mug bearing the face of my long time celebrity crush Eva Green (something he got as a gift from the director of Cockneys Vs. Zombies), I knew this was going to be a good interview. Now with a full cup of coffee in my own mug that sported a silhouette of the Frankenstein creature, Justin Benson, Aaron Moorhead, and I embarked on a long journey discussing monsters, love, Alan Moore, their upcoming Aleister Crowley film, and riding bikes around Cannes in $25 suits.
Talk about the process of writing, making, and getting Spring released
