New York, New York, the latest Kander and Ebb musical on Broadway, announced Sunday that it will close in one week.
The musical, which also features additional lyrics by Lin-Manuel Miranda, is inspired by the 1977 film, which was directed by Martin Scorsese and featured Liza Minnelli and Robert De Niro. The show opened at the St. James Theatre on April 26 and will now play its final performance July 30.
The sudden closure comes as the large-scale production, which had a big cast and expansive scenery, has failed to pull in big numbers at the box office, amid unfavorable reviews. In recent weeks, capacity has hovered just above 70 percent. Additionally, the musical won only one Tony Award, for best scenic design, after being nominated for nine, including best musical.

Actors’ Equity Association will hold a town hall event to address issues about safety protocols and get-back-to-work efforts raised in a petition from more than 2,000 union members last week.
Details about the town hall, including location and date, will be announced shortly, the union writes.
The petition, organized by Hadestown actor Timothy Hughes and signed by such Broadway stars such as Karen Olivo, Aaron Tveit, Stephanie J. Block, Rachel Bay Jones, Eva Noblezada, Rob McClure, Ato Blankson-Wood, Robyn Hurder and Emily Skinner, among many others, expressed concern that “while many aspects of our lives are moving forward towards a new sense of normalcy, our Union is not.”
Many Equity members, the petition states, “have grown deeply frustrated and increasingly concerned about the lack of practical details in how to return to work.” The petition also criticized “the increasingly problematic lack of communication” on the issue from Equity.

This episode of Broadway Rewind takes you to the opening night celebration of the new production of Michael Bennett's Pulitzer Prize winning musical A Chorus Line. But we start things off at a rehearsal for the one night only Actors Fund Benefit of The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, which starred Emily Skinner as Miss Mona and Broadway's original 'Annie' herself, Andrea McArdle as Doatsey Mae. McArdle told BroadwayWorld's own Richard Ridge about her take on the role and her song, 'She reminds me a little bit of that Mabel Normand character. Doatsey Mae is very smart. If it wasn't for that Chicken Ranch in town, she would have been a happening girl. She's overshadowed by all of this tardiness in this tiny little town, and the song, is a heartbreaking number. It's sweet and a great country number.

The opening credits of Ilyssa Goodman’s “Next Level” are, perhaps, the most interesting thing about it. They begin with the credit for the producer — and when was the last time you saw that in a theater? — and then work their way backwards to the cast, crew and director, as if to say that the fact that this movie got made is, itself, the most noteworthy accomplishment of all.
“Next Level” is a song-and-dance drama about a summer camp for teen enthusiasts of this business we call show. The audience is informed, in no uncertain terms, in the movie’s second scene, that this is one of the most prestigious organizations of its kind in the country. But we are informed in literally every other scene that the organization employs only two people and is taking up space in a disused corner of a community-college campus.

The Cher Show is packed with so much of her that it takes three talented actresses to portray the 72-year-old legend. The Broadway musical also depicts many characters from Cher’s life — Phil Spector, Greg Allman, Robert Altman, Rob “The Bagel Boy” Camilletti and her mother Georgia Holt (played with hilarity by Emily Skinner) — but some have noted that Cher’s son, Chaz Bono, is mainly absent on stage. That doesn’t mean that he isn’t mentioned. In fact, he is referred to by his name in the musical — even as a baby,...

Believing in life after love turns out to be a surer bet than pinning your hopes on jukebox musicals, no matter how fabulous the subject. The Cher Show, opening tonight at Broadway’s Neil Simon Theatre, might not disappoint anyone likely to applaud a Bob Mackie-designed Oscar gown, but neither does it do any boundary-pushing. So very un-Cher.
With a pedigree promising much, much more – book by Rick Elice, direction by Jason Moore (Avenue Q), costumes by Mackie and the involvement of the diva herself as producer – The Cher Show doesn’t budge outside lines already drawn for other mediocre bio-musicals, dragging Cher where Donna Summer, Gloria Estefan and even Janis Joplin have already been. The lack of creative ambition and innovation is dispiriting, especially when Jersey Boys, Beautiful and Lazarus have already proven these things needn’t be dreadful.

A new Broadway season is gearing up, and there are currently three productions of musicals (all new) set to open this fall. Could we be seeing any of them contend at next year’s Tony Awards? Below, we recap the plot of each musical as well as the awards history of its author, cast and creative types and the opening and (where applicable) closing dates.
“King Kong” (previews begin October 5; opens November 8)
In this musical adaptation of Merian C. Cooper and Ernest B. Schoedsack’s classic 1933 film of the same name, an ambitious young actress and a maverick filmmaker voyage from the bustling streets of 1930s New York to an uncharted island to capture the greatest wonder the world has ever seen. At the center of this 21st-century reimagining: a 2,000-pound, 20-story gorilla, and the woman who risks everything to help him.

Chicago – Has anybody in show business had more “comebacks” than Cher… or if you added her many last names Cher Sarkisian La Piere Bono Allman? All of the triumphs and downturns are shoehorned into “The Cher Show,” now in Chicago in a pre-Broadway run through July 15, 2018. Click here for more details, including ticket information.
Play Rating: 3.5/5.0
The huge entertainment in the show is provided by the three women portraying Cher in different life eras… Babe (Micaela Diamond), Lady (Teal Wicks) and Star (Stephanie J. Block). All have transcendent talent, because they transcend the fragmented and overstuffed story with their singing, dancing and performance chops. In what must be a whirlwind of a show for the three, they interact throughout and ponder Cher like the ghosts of “A Christmas Carol,” but with much more show biz and sex appeal.

The new jukebox bio-musical “The Cher Show” captures a good amount of the vibrant personality and genuinely admirable perseverance that make Cher the ultimate celebrity survivor. But like Cher herself, the show careens from career to career without a consistent thrust other than awesome attitude. In its pre-Broadway version premiering in Chicago, “The Cher Show” sings but doesn’t soar, and seems likely to appeal primarily to the most adoring of her admittedly enormous fan base, suggesting a commercial trajectory more in line with “On Your Feet” than “Beautiful.”
In the book by Rick Elice, the show opens with a scene where the mature Cher (Stephanie J. Block) decides to change the opening number of a fictional variety show about her own life. In conversation with her two younger selves, Cher decides to turn back time, taking us to a stylized sequence where a young Cher is comforted by...

[Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers from the Season 2 premiere of “Andi Mack.”]
In its second season premiere, “Andi Mack” goes straight for the heart and holds nothing back. Disney Channel announced this week that one of its characters would begin a journey to discovering his identity as a gay individual, and it doubled the runtime for the episode to give space to properly explore this storyline alongside the main plot.
It was reported that creator Terri Minsky had consulted with child development experts, as well as Common Sense Media, GLAAD, and Pflag in order to make sure the story be told in a manner that was both respectful and appropriate to the age group. This depth of care shows because how Cyrus (Joshua Rash) slowly begins to realize he’s gay and discusses this with his friend Buffy (Sofia Wylie) is note-perfect in many ways. “Andi Mack” has always had a deft hand balancing the fun of a kids show with heartfelt stories that actually feel genuine,...
