Robyn McCall will continue righting wrongs for another season.
CBS has ordered a fifth season of The Equalizer, its drama series starring Queen Latifah (who also executive produces) as McCall, a former CIA operative turned freelance problem solver for people who have nowhere else to turn. The show is a reimagining of the 1985-89 series of the same name and not connected to the Denzel Washington-led film franchise that’s also inspired by the original series.
With the renewal, The Equalizer will pass the original series in the number of seasons it has aired (though not yet in episode count — the 1980s series ran for 88 episodes, and the current show will end this season with 56).
With the pickup of The Equalizer, CBS has only one scripted series — NCIS: Hawai’i — awaiting word on its future. The network plans to announce its 2023-24 schedule on May 2.

“The Equalizer” has been renewed for Season 5 at CBS, Variety has learned.
“’The Equalizer,’ led by the incomparable Queen Latifah, has all the best elements of a powerful drama,” said Amy Reisenbach, president of CBS Entertainment. “The series is stacked with suspense, heroism, high stakes and formidable characters our audience roots for. We look forward to another dynamic season.”
With the renewal, the only current CBS series awaiting word of its fate is “NCIS: Hawai’i.” The network has renewed much of its scripted lineup already, including recent pickups for “Elsbeth” and the “FBI” franchise. CBS recently announced it was canceling both “So Help Me Todd” and “CSI: Vegas,” while shows like “Bob Hearts Abishola,” “Blue Bloods” and “Young Sheldon” are coming to an end.
Per CBS, “The Equalizer” is currently averaging over 10 million viewers per episode in Live+35 multiplatform viewing. The show is based on the 1980s CBS series of the same name.

CBS has picked up a fifth season of drama The Equalizer, starring and executive produced by Queen Latifah, for 2024-25.
As Deadline reported last week, the renewal was fully expected, with the delay related to lead studio Universal Television negotiating a deal with Queen Latifah. It recently closed, paving the way to a renewal.
So far, The Equalizer‘s seasons had been capped at 18 episodes, which is something top talent often request when signing on for a broadcast drama series. There was an effort in the Queen Latifah negotiation to increase the number to 20 or more but I hear Season 5 will again consist of 18 episodes.
After Elsbeth renewed and So Help Me Todd and CSI: Vegas canceled last week, NCIS: Hawai’i remains the only CBS scripted series in limbo.

As Deadline reported last week, Hawai’i’s future is said to be the subject of tough business conversations, with a partial Season 4 of 13 or fewer episodes still a possibility. It could be a final chapter for the show, the first installment in the NCIS franchise with a female lead.
The Equalizer has been a strong performer for CBS, currently ranking as the #8 most watched among all non-sports broadcast programs, averaging 7.89M linear viewers (in Nielsen most current data) and over 10 million viewers in Live+35 multi-platform viewership. It also is the #1 entertainment program among African Americans.

Co-produced by CBS Studios, The Equalizer is one of four drama series Universal Television, part of Universal Studio Group, makes for CBS, along with the three FBIs, all of which were also recently renewed, the flagship for three seasons.
A reimagining of the classic series, The Equalizer stars Queen Latifah as Robyn McCall, an enigmatic woman with a mysterious background who uses her extensive skills as a former CIA operative to help those with nowhere else to turn.
Lorraine Toussaint, Tory Kittles, Adam Goldberg, Liza Lapira and Laya DeLeon Hayes also star. Andrew Marlowe, Terri Edda Miller, co-showrunners Joseph C. [Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for The Equalizer Season 3, Episode 1 “Boom.”] Last we saw Robyn McCall (Queen Latifah) on The Equalizer, she’d been kidnapped. And as the Season 3 premiere shows, that’s just the beginning of her troubles. Yes, villain Mason Quinn (Chris Vance) is behind it, and his plans for Robyn are simple: frame her for a dirty bomb he’s going to set off somewhere in New York City. Fortunately, Robyn’s friends and loved ones — all coming together and knowing exactly who everyone is to her, including Dante (Tory Kittles) learning Delilah (Laya DeLeon Hayes) is her daughter — work together to not only find her but also remove the radioactive material before the bomb goes off. Thankfully, Quinn is vanquished during a final confrontation with Robyn. So what’s next? We turned to co-showrunner Joseph C. Wilson for answers. Talk about crafting the scenes where Robyn’s lives collide: Dante learning the truth,...

While she plots an escape, her colleagues and family unite to launch a rescue of their own. “[Saving her] takes everyone working together,” Wilson says. “The walls come down.” Among the highlights: Detective Dante (Tory Kittles) runs a gauntlet of...

CBS has renewed its hit drama The Equalizer, starring Queen Latifah, for Seasons 3 and 4, beginning with the 2022-2023 broadcast season, the network announced Thursday.
The two-season renewal reflects the strength of The Equalizer‘s ratings performance — it is Sunday’s #1 scripted series, averaging 9.46 million viewers. Season to date, the show has amassed 1.2 billion potential social media impressions, according to CBS. In anticipation of a pickup, The Equalizer recently set new showrunners, Joseph C. Wilson and Adam Glass, who will succeed at the helm the series’ developers, Andrew W. Marlowe and Terri Edda Miller.
Additional renewals are expected in the coming days. As Deadline’s Nellie Andreeva previously reported CBS’ top scripted series, FBI, as well as spinoffs Most Wanted and International are in renewal negotiations with lead studio Universal Television and fully expected to continue, also possibly with multi-year renewals. Fellow Uni TV co-produced Magnum P.I. also has a chance to return.

Exclusive: Andrew W. Marlowe and Terri Edda Miller, who created the CBS series The Equalizer based on the 1980s show, are stepping down as showrunners of the hit drama starring and executive produced by Queen Latifah after two seasons. Joseph C. Wilson, who has been on the show since the first season, and Adam Glass (The Chi) have been named new showrunners for Season 3.
CBS is yet to renew any of its Universal Television-co-produced series, The Equalizer, the three FBI dramas and Magnum Pi. All look good to continue, with the highly-rated FBIs and The Equalizer considered a slam dunk. The hire of new showrunners further solidifies The Equalizer‘s outlook as networks and studios usually go through the process when a renewal is expected.

For starters, he wanted to maintain the innocent way the two boys viewed the world. The second reason, though, proved a lot more complicated. Or, as his ex-wife explained to Robyn on the March 20 installment titled “D.W.B” (aka Driving While Black), “You get judged from the outside, while trying to solve the problem from inside.

The Affair co-creator, executive producer and showrunner Sarah Treem has inked an overall deal with Fox 21 Television Studios.
Treem, who just wrapped the fifth and final season of the Showtime drama starring Dominic West and Maura Tierney, will create, develop, produce and oversee series for network, cable and streaming platforms as part of the multi-year deal.
It is the latest overall deal signed by the Disney-owned studio, which produces series including FX’s Pose and Netflix’s The Politician following agreements with See exec producers Jon Steinberg and Dan Shotz, Warren Littlefield, and The Chi co-exec producer Joseph C. Wilson.
“I have wanted to work with Sarah for a long time, and leapt at the chance as soon as The Affair, which I loved, ended,” Fox 21 president Bert Salke said. “There are very few creators who have her muscular sense of story and her gift for building unique and idiosyncratic characters.
