This past summer was a memorable one for fans of Konami's video game franchise Castlevania. In addition to the release of a new four-episode animated series adaptation of the video games on Netflix, the streaming service also renewed the series for an eight-episode second season, and viewers of the show were treated to a story that took an R-rated approach to violence and a bold path with its storytelling. One of the creative forces behind the new series is Adi Shankar (executive producer of films such as Dredd and The Grey) and I had the opportunity to talk with the filmmaker about collaborating with Sam Deats and Warren Ellis, the freedom of working with Netflix, and much more.
Thanks so much for taking some time to talk with me and congratulations on Castlevania. I wrapped up watching the first season and I absolutely loved it.
Adi Shankar: Amazing, amazing.

Director Mike Flanagan and producer and Intrepid Pictures principal Trevor Macy talk to Jeremy Kay about their latest horror film and Netflix acquisition ahead of its world premiere at SXSW on Saturday.
Intrepid and Blumhouse Pictures co-financed and produced the story of a deaf-mute woman alone in a remote house who is terrorised by a man.
Kate Siegel stars and co-wrote the screenplay with Flanagan. It was announced on Thursday that Netflix had acquired global streaming rights and will launch the film on April 8.
Firstly, sound is so important in horror/thrillers, so talk a bit about what you wanted to achieve, especially given that the lead character is deaf-mute.
Mike Flanagan: We knew from the beginning that sound design would be have to be a full-blown character in this film. There is so little dialogue; it forces the sound design to carry huge stretches of the movie without support. People take sound...

Filmmaker Michelle MacLaren has dropped out of her role as director of Warner Bros. Pictures and DC Entertainment's upcoming standalone "Wonder Woman" film.
In a statement, the studio says: "Given creative differences, Warner Bros. and Michelle MacLaren have decided not to move forward with plans to develop and direct 'Wonder Woman' together."
The project was in the middle of pre-production, with the role of the male love interest Steve Trevor reportedly close to being cast before the announcement.
Gal Gadot is still attached to star, and Jason Fuchs is on board to pen the script. No word as yet regarding whether the film will be delayed from its June 23rd 2017 release.

Exclusive: Producer Eric Newman’s new Studiocanal shingle Grand Electric has set its first project, an adaptation of Trevor Lummis’ Life And Death In Eden: Pitcairn Island And The Bounty Mutineers, which scribe Kristina Lauren Anderson has been set to adapt. The pic will tell the true tale of what happened after the famed Hms Bounty mutiny led by Fletcher Christian — the 1789 naval uprising that Hollywood has re-created often with the likes of Errol Flynn, Clark Gable, Marlon Brando and Mel Gibson playing Christian.
The news comes just more than a month after Newman pacted on the multi-year joint venture with Studiocanal in his first tie-up since he and Marc Abraham split their prolific Universal-based Strike Entertainment. He has been busy since then, among other things exec producing for Netflix Hemlock Grove and the upcoming Narcos with Jose Padilha directing.

On Monday night, stars stepped out to support The Trevor Project at the TrevorLIVE event in NYC. The project focuses on crisis intervention and suicide prevention services to Lgbtq youth, and the semiannual event honors those who help support the cause. Neil Patrick Harris and his partner, David Burtka, are both co-chairs for the project and spoke at the event this year. Last week, Neil not only won his first Tony Award, but gave a lap dance to Sting as his transgender character from Hedwig and the Angry Inch during the Tonys. TrevorLIVE came just one night after Neil mixed work and play on Father's Day. After a jazz brunch with David and their twins, Gideon and Harper (who are just too cute for words), he performed his Broadway show twice on Sunday night! Neil and David weren't the only ones showing their support. Ellen Page, who recently came out during an emotional speech,...

Shapiro Follows Honey Trail; Enigmatic Shavitz is the Bee’s Knees
The bearded-face of Burt’s Bees, a pioneering company in the commodification of “all-natural” personal care, is not an imagined icon slapped onto distinctive yellow packaging, but the likeness of founder Burt Shavitz. Documentarian Jody Shapiro (How to Start Your Own Country) draws an intimate portrait of the lesser-known man behind the brand in Burt’s Buzz. The project, suggested and produced by Isabella Rossellini, never exoticizes the 76-year old recluse, but thoughtfully approaches his contradictory public and private life. Hardly resting on the unaided appeal of his strangely charming subject, Shapiro frames emotion and wry humor with subtlety to create a layered, lively documentary.
Somewhere in the backwoods of Maine, Shavitz looks at the camera and says “I got granola in my teeth should I get up and wash my mouth out”, introducing the steady stream of unusual hilarity to follow.
