On May 2, the Writers Guild of America called for a strike after negotiations with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers fell through. The first week was robust with picketing in New York City, Los Angeles and Atlanta, with the striking shutting down productions. As the strike enters a second week, Variety is still reporting from the picket lines.
Day 7 (May 8) Netflix (Los Angeles)
*Family and Kid Day at the Netflix picket drew a huge crowd, seemingly showing that Week 2 crowds would be as robust as Week 1.
*Variety spoke with Michele Mulroney, vice president of the WGA West, on the picket line outside of Netflix headquarters in Hollywood about what AMPTP needs to do to resume the contract talks.
“I’m feeling strong, because our members are feeling strong,” she said. “Our members are very educated on the reasons that we’re out and the reasons we are walking.

This review contains spoilers for Marvel’s Loki episode 5, WandaVision and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.
Loki Episode 5
“I am Loki. God of Outcasts. They see themselves in me, and I in them. All of us, alone together. It’s why my stories always end with someone trying to put me in a box. And begin with my spectacular escape.”
An excerpt there from Daniel Kibblesmith’s Loki #5, and quite a prominent theme of Loki’s story in the Marvel Cinematic Universe to date. Classic Loki (a spectacular Richard E. Grant) declared part of it aloud in the fifth episode of Loki when he told his gathered counterparts that they only have one part to play in the story of life, the universe, and everything: the God of Outcasts.
But throughout the series to date, Loki has borne witness to all his terrible flaws made flesh, and right about...

In these divisive times, it takes a lot to unite everyone, but Marvel Comics has done it. Earlier this week, they unveiled two new heroes: Snowflake and Safespace. The characters will be part of Luciano Vecchio and Daniel Kibblesmith’s New Warriors series and the company has been promoting Snowflake as their first non-binary superhero, with Kibblesmith explaining the pair as follows:
“Hyper aware of modern culture and optics, and they see their Super Heroics as ‘a post-ironic meditation on using violence to combat bullying. It’s this idea that these are terms that get thrown around on the internet that they don’t see as derogatory. [They] take those words and kind of wear them as badges of honour.”
It’s also worth watching him explain them in person, which feels like it might be lifted from a Christopher Guest movie:
The first non-binary superhero in Marvel and they named them Snowflake.

In recent times, the House of Ideas has treated True Believers to miniseries that pit some of their most popular characters against each other – and with coherent explanations. That said, we’re sure at least some of you remember last year’s Deadpool vs. The Punisher and the gallons of blood it left behind, and the topic of today’s discussion should certainly keep your interest in crossovers going.
As it turns out, two of this year’s box office juggernauts are now butting heads in the appropriately titled Black Panther vs. Deadpool, a five-issue miniseries penned by The Late Show with Stephen Colbert writer Daniel Kibblesmith (Lockjaw) and illustrated by Ricardo Lopez Ortiz. Cover art, meanwhile, is provided by Ryan Benjamin (Batman).
Well, expect for things to heat up when the fourth installment hits shelves on January 30th, as the Merc with a Mouth will find himself seated on the throne of Wakanda.

It looks like Deapool is going to be stepping into the role of Black Panther in Marvel Comics! This big reveal was teased thanks to the cover art that was released for Black Panther vs. Deadpool #4.
The cover art was created by Ryan Benjamin and Rain Beredo and it shows Wade Wilson wearing a cool looking new costume that is a mix of Deadpool and Black Panther. The cover art also came with the solicitation text that dubs this new look “Panther-Pool.”
The first issue of Black Panther vs. Deadpool hits stores this week and it centers on Deadpool going to Wakanda to try to get his hands on some vibranium but T’Challa isn’t going to make it easy for him. Here’s official plot summary:

Marvel Comics has announced a new Black Panther Vs. Deadpool comic book miniseries. It will consist of five issues and will be written by The Late Show and Lockjaw writer Daniel Kibblesmith. The series will also feature art by Ricardo Lopez Ortiz as well as a cover by Ryan Benjamin, which we included here. Here's the synopsis:
For a reason he’d rather not disclose Deadpool needs a piece of Vibranium…and the only way to get Vibranium is to go through the Black Panther himself! But Deadpool soon learns that his unconventional methods don’t exactly work against the king of the most technologically advanced country on the planet…
Editor Wil Moss also talked about the new comic saying:
"Featuring a brawl you can only get in comics (for now anyway), Black Panther Vs. Deadpool is the best of both worlds, equal parts Black Panther/Wakanda and Deadpool/Crazytown.

Welcome back to another installment of Panel Discussion – this time featuring a rundown of my picks of the Top 30 comics released in February 2018. This is part two, a countdown of books 15-1… But first the caveats:
First and foremost this is simply my list and with that comes a great deal of subjectivity. Any art form is a subjective medium and taste plays a major role. So if you feel my rankings are way off you probably have a legitimate point. My hope is to simply to highlight great books that deserve attention. We too often focus on the negative so why not take some time to celebrate the positive. Since this is my list that also means I can only rank issues I have actually read. There may be a book that is in your top five that does not make the cut. Please let me know. I try...

He’s been a breakout star since he could bark, a faithful sidekick to his Inhuman masters, and has helped protect an empire. Now, he’s got his own mission to take on as Marvel announce Lockjaw #1, a new four-part mini, debuting in February 2018, written by Daniel Kibblesmith with art by Carlos Villa.
When Lockjaw finds out his long-lost siblings are in danger, he’ll embark on a journey which will result in a teleporting, mind-bending adventure. Said series editor Wil Moss:
We’re super excited about this book. Daniel Kibblesmith – a hilarious writer who works on The Late Show and recently published a book called Santa’s Husband – has cooked up an incredibly fun, heart-filled romp around the Marvel Universe. Back in Black Bolt #5, writer Saladin Ahmed and artist Frazer Irving finally settled the mystery of Lockjaw’s origin: He’s definitely a dog, birthed by a dog, who...

Energy Secretary Rick Perry caused confusion after he suggested on Thursday that fossil fuels could help prevent sexual assault.
Speaking at an energy policy event hosted by Axios and NBC News in Washington, D.C., the former Texas governor and Dancing with the Stars contestant discussed his recent trip to Africa and how fossil fuels can help bring power to impoverished parts of the continent.
“But also from the standpoint of sexual assault, when the lights are on, when you have light that shines, the righteousness, if you will, on those types of acts,” Perry said. “So from the standpoint...

During their 3rd annual Valiant Summit, Valiant Entertainment once again gave us an amazing line up of books that will be released throughout this year, starting with last months launch of X-o Manowar and concluding with December's release of Quantum and Woody. It is important to note that Valiant Entertainment has only been around since their relaunch in 2012. They had such an impact that they won the award of Comic Publisher of the Year from Diamond Comic Distributors that same year. Now they are on the verge of bigger and better things including a YouTube series called Ninjak Vs. The Valiant Universe, a multi-movie deal with Sony which includes a Bloodshot movie and a Quantum and Woody television show that will be made by the Russo brothers, who are currently working on the next Avengers film.

The GMan Tavern is a rarity these days. A consistently great bar in a neighborhood that's rapidly changing, some say for the better, while others say it's losing any trace of what made it interesting in the first place. The draft list and whiskey selection is full but not fussy, the Bloody Mary could very well be the best in the city, you'll hardly find a better jukebox anywhere and there used to be a pool table there, fitting since the place was used in Martin Scorsese's The Color of Money.

The Writers Guild of America has just announced the nominations for their annual awards for Best Screenplays (by writers who are guild signatories). That’s right, before you get nervous thinking that your favorite may have been left off the list, you must remember that the WGA is the group that is not all-inclusive and leaves out several of the top contenders each year due to them not being part of the guild or not following their very specific rules. For this reason, you won’t see Inside Out, The Hateful Eight, and Ex Machina in the Original Screenplay category or Room, Brooklyn, or Anomalisa in the Adapted screenplay category.
Taking a look at what’s left over for the nominations, we find many that were expected to make a showing, including Spotlight and Bridge of Spies for Original Screenplay, though they apparently had to sink to really low depths...
