Prince may no longer be with us, but his musical reputation and pop cultural impact lives on. And now, according to Jeff Sneider at The InSneider (and later confirmed by the trades), Black Panther filmmaker Ryan Coogler is throwing the might of his Proximity Media company behind developing a jukebox musical powered by the Purple One's tunes.
Few details are available about the film at the moment, as it's still at an early stage. Bryan Edward Hill, a veteran of the Titans DC universe series, has written a draft of the script, but it sounds like it'll go through further incarnations on its journey to the screen.
The film doesn't yet have a publicly released title yet, but it's set up at Universal.
Coogler, who runs Proximity with his wife, Zinzi Evans, alongside Sev Ohanian co-founded by the director's Black Panther colleague, composer Ludwig Göransson, is also gearing up to make his next film.

Jordan is set for release on March 7, 2025, with the studio having landed the coveted project in February after a bidding war. The pair have a long professional history together, as Coogler has previously directed Jordan in Fruitvale Station (2013), Creed (2015) and Black Panther (2018).
More recently, Coogler directed the 2022 Marvel sequel Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

Back in January, it was revealed that frequent collaborators Ryan Coogler and Michael B. Jordan – who have worked on Fruitvale Station, Creed, Black Panther, and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever together as director and cast member, and have other collaborations that Coogler didn’t direct – have been developing a new project in secret. Coogler has written the script for this project, which is being described as a genre picture that Coogler will be directing and Jordan is attached to star in. The movie found a home at Warner Bros., and we’ve heard that it’s expected to have a budget of $90 million. Now we know when Warner Bros. is going to send it out into the world, as Deadline reports that it’s scheduled for a theatrical release on March 7, 2025.

Ryan Coogler has a date to return to movie theaters. Warner Bros. has set a March 7, 2025 release for the project, which will star Michael B. Jordan and arrive in Imax.
The film is untitled, but true to Coogler form, it is described as an event film. Coogler is producing via Proximity Media with Zinzi Coogler and Sev Ohanian. One of Coogler’s frequent collaborators, composer Ludwig Göransson, will executive produce with Rebecca Cho and Will Greenfield. Göransson, who earlier this month won the Oscar for best score for his work on Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, also won the Oscar for Coogler’s Black Panther.
Warner Bros. landed the project in February after a bidding war and under a unique deal that will see Coogler regain some rights to the project after a number of years. Coogler is eying a production date this spring in New Orleans.

Update, March 19: Warner Bros. has slated the film for a March 7, 2025 IMAX release.
After a heated bidding war, Warner Bros. won the rights to the latest collaboration from writer-director-producer Ryan Coogler and star Michael B. Jordan.
Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group’s Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy confirmed the studio landed a deal with the duo for the untitled movie, based on an original script by Coogler. Details about the plot are being kept under wraps, but it has been described as an “original genre film.”
The new movie marks Coogler and Jordan’s fifth collaboration, beginning with “Fruitvale Station” in 2013 and continuing with the “Creed” and “Black Panther” franchises. De Luca and Abdy also have a successful track record with the duo, as they greenlit “Creed III” during their tenure at MGM.

Ryan Coogler & Michael B. Jordan Genre Pic Has 3 Studios Vying In Year’s First Big Auction: The Dish
Exclusive: Looks like it’s down to three studios on the year’s hottest auction, the untitled genre thriller that will reunite writer-director Ryan Coogler and Michael B. Jordan, Deadline hears. Sony, Warner Bros and Universal are battling it out for a deal that would allow Coogler to start production this summer. It also might portend a longer relationship for the hitmaker-with-heart filmmaker and his Proximity Media.
Here’s what I’ve heard. Coogler’s script is a period genre film that is a true star vehicle for Jordan, who has worked with the director on Fruitvale Station and the Creed and Black Panther franchises. The numbers being thrown around for worldwide rights are large but not out of line, given the commercial track record of both men. I’ve heard the film’s budget is around $90 million.

It looks to be that Ryan Coogler has learned a thing or two from Marvel Studios about keeping secrets. The partnership of Coogler and Michael B. Jordan goes back to when the duo had made the acclaimed film Fruitvale Station back in 2013. Then, the two broke through to become powerhouses in the movie business when they reunited for a daring spin-off of the Rocky franchise with 2015’s Creed. That partnership continued with Coogler’s next two features, Black Panther and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

The Hollywood Reporter broke the news late last night that Creed director and star Ryan Coogler and Michael B. Jordan are reuniting for a mysterious “feature film project.”
What’s particularly exciting here is that THR refers to the untitled project as a “genre movie,” suggesting it’s going to fall somewhere within the sci-fi and/or horror genres.
Ryan Coogler (Black Panther) wrote the script and will be directing. THR notes, “It’s based on an original idea from Coogler, who will serve as lead producer.”
The website further details, “The project is operating under such a veil of secrecy that little is known about it. In fact, executives and buyers were forced to make the pilgrimage to the Beverly Hills offices of WME, the agency that represents Coogler and Jordan, in order to take a gander on the script and get details. Those meetings took place last week.

The Black Panther director wrote the screenplay as well, and is set to serve as director and lead producer, along with producers Zinzi Coogler and Sev Ohanian. Jordan will star.

Michael B. Jordan and director Ryan Coogler are reuniting once again, with both attached to an original genre film still shrouded in secrecy. The package was showcased to executives and buyers last week at the offices of WME, with additional meetings set to take place to seek a production commitment from suitors.
The project marks the first spec script from Coogler through his production banner, Proximity Media. It would reunite Jordan and Coogler for a fifth time, as the actor has appeared in each of the filmmaker’s features so far.
The pair’s “Fruitvale Station” debuted at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival to critical acclaim, putting both on the map in Hollywood. Coogler and Jordan then collaborated on “Creed,” launching an ongoing spinoff of the “Rocky” franchise. Though Coogler has stepped away from helming the series, Jordan has starred in two more entries, taking the director’s chair for the third one.

Almost exactly 10 years ago, Ryan Coogler’s “Fruitvale” launched the young Oakland filmmaker into the upper echelons of Hollywood influence. With “Black Panther” and “Creed,” Coogler brought fresh energy and social consciousness to existing franchises while expanding their appeal to underserved audiences. Now, those efforts have expanded to the documentary realm.
Two years ago, Coogler rooted his filmmaking efforts beyond the blockbuster arena in the creation of a production company, Proximity Media, which yielded studio efforts like “Space Jam 2” and the Oscar-nominated “Judas and the Black Messiah.” Initially co-founded by Coogler with wife Zinzi Coogler and Sev Ohanian, the company eventually added a non-fiction division overseen by fellow Bay Area filmmaker Peter Nicks. Over the past year, that collaboration has yielded the company’s first two documentary releases, the Sundance-premiering NBA portrait “Stephen Curry: Underrated” and now “Anthem,” which premiered last month on Hulu. Aneesh Chaganty's "Searching," was a truly inventive thriller, depicting a father's search for his missing daughter as played out entirely in the digital space. In the 2018 film, John Cho's David Kim doggedly tracks down his missing daughter Margot (Michelle La) in an intense scramble across websites, phone videos, security cameras, and virtual desktops. The Chaganty-helmed project was a minor hit, and a messier but just as thrilling anthology sequel, "Missing," arrived earlier this year.
Directed by "Searching" editors Will Merrick and Nick Johnson, "Missing," carries on the central conceit of someone desperately looking for a lost relative via digital means. In the film, Storm Reid's June searches for her missing mother (Nia Long) who disappears on a trip to Colombia. And just as some viewers noticed a whole alien invasion narrative playing out as an easter egg in "Searching," "Missing" appears to be telling a whole superhero origin story in secret.
