An American scholar who was in the country for research accused Mahmood Farooqui of rape after he invited her for dinner at his residence in South Delhi. It is being said that a drunk Mahmood forced himself upon her, after which charges under Section 376 (rape) were pressed against the filmmaker. Indian filmmaker Mahmood Farooqui has been found guilty of raping an American woman enrolled at Columbia University, THR reports. Farooqui faces a minimum sentence of seven years in prison and a maximum sentence of life in prison, and is expected to be sentenced on Tuesday. The rape took place at Farooqui’s home in Delhi in March of 2015. The victim, who is in her 30s, was first introduced to Farooqui by his friend Danish Hussain.
Farooqui co-directed the 2010 movie “Peepli Live” with his wife Anusha Rizvi. The film premiered at Sundance and was India’s entry for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.
The verdict is particularly significant due to a 2013 amendment that made forced oral sex a crime.

When a dirt-poor Indian farmer faces confiscation of his land thanks to an unpaid debt, he's persuaded by his unscrupuolous brother to commit suicide, a desperate measure that bizarrely attracts a $2,000 compensation payment from the government. However, when his dubious plan is revealed he finds himself the subject of the hysterical media campaign that could have a knock-on effect for dodgy local politicians. Writer-director Anusha Rizvi has concocted a black satire with Omkar Das Manikpuri's grubby innocent Natha a wide-eyed pawn in the cynical machinations of contemporary India.

Anusha Rizvi of Peepli Live fame is working on her next film titled Afeem, a Bhojpuri adaptation of Amitav Ghosh's novel Sea of Poppies. On being questioned as to why she is going the Bhojpuri way, the director said that since it is a period film set in Bihar in 1830s, it could not be made in Hindi. Anusha pointed out that considering Bulenkhandi language was used in Peepli Live, Bhojpuri should not be a problem as the language is being spoken by a vast number of people around the world.
Interestingly, the filmmaker has roped in her father Professor Mujib Rizvi, a linguist who has worked on the medieval poetry of Bihar, as a consultant on the film. Once again Anusha will be directing the film along with her husband Mahmood Farooqui, where the film is aimed at being a musical although not like a traditional Bollywood film.

Manish Tewari
A delegation of independent filmmakers represented by Onir, Anusha Rizvi and Shonali Bose will meet the Information and Broadcasting Minister Manish Tewari today with the “Save Indie Cinema” Petition jointly filled by 45 award winning film makers and signed by about 10,000 people.
The petition seeks to address the threats that New Wave Indie Cinema of India faces today. One of the concerns of indie filmmakers is non availability of resources to exhibit their films. “High ticket pricing that is inappropriate for small budget films, inadequate number of shows and odd show timings further destroy the possibility of Indie cinema (regional and Hindi) to have any proper chance at being viewed. It defies logic that a 150 Crores film and a 1.5 crore film are priced by the multiplexes in the same manner,” reads the petition.

Wild Fire is a story of conflict between industrial growth and indigenous people. It’s not a balanced evaluation of the development question but a heavily one-sided account of those who pay the price for it. Looks like 'All Izz Not Well' between Aamir Khan and his Talaash director Reema Kagti. The buzz is that Aamir wasn't too happy with the second half of the film that has been in the making for a long time now. After feedback from some secretly held test screenings, Aamir felt that there are certain changes which need to be done.
Aamir even called for a hush-hush meeting with Reema and co-producers Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani expressing his concern. The actor expressed his desire to sit on the final edit of the film post which Reema lost her cool and refused to re-shoot any portions.
Incidentally this is not the first time Aamir has had a showdown with his directors. In the past too, directors like Amole Gupte and Anusha Rizvi have been upset with the actor's over-interference in every department.

The Indians in this film are just so obliging, presenting a curiously old-fashioned form of cultural anaesthesia
The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, John Madden's new comedy about English retirees in India, starts with an alluring mix of the exotic and the familiar: Dame Judi is on the phone in her London flat, speaking to a person in an Indian call centre who doesn't know how to accommodate the fact that her husband is dead. We chance upon Dame Maggie being marvellously racist in her wheelchair. The audience is encouraged to laugh at her absurdity, consider how times have changed, and settle into their seats.
Great Britain is not working for these people as their pension pots collapse and their children and partners disappear into the horizon. How will they find an answer? This is a beginning rich with anticipation and the potential for crossed wires, tension, redemption, the full works.

These production houses have come to the market with films like Ra.One, Don 2 and The Dirty Picture. On the other hand, there are several independent filmmakers trying to woo buyers, sales agents and festival representatives with their projects.
Manav Vij who represents the thriller-romance With Love, Delhi starring veteran actors like Tom Alter and Seema Biswas at the market was busy arranging meetings. “Here people are more interested in exploring offbeat films. With Love, Delhi is probably a tad too mainstream in that sense,” he said, a little disappointed.
The conference room that is booked for arranged meetings was seen abuzz with people.

Be it the rural flavour of "Ishqiya", the sexual overtones of "Love Sex Aur Dhokha" or the urban adult comedy "Delhi Belly", notice how unconventional themes are being lapped up by moviegoers? Viewer tastes appear to be changing as new age filmmakers endeavour to stay away from the larger-than-life characters, melodrama and typical romances Bollywood has always been known for. New entrant Imran Khan, the lead actor of adult comedy "Delhi Belly", who is flourishing under the umbrella of his talented uncle Aamir Khan, feels the new lot of filmmakers is the baton carrier and "the industry has opened up a lot more". "Writers, producers and actors have opened so much to off-beat cinema and the audience has grown alongside," he added. Despite being tagged as an A-movie, replete with expletives and with no-morals attached, Imran's "Delhi Belly" hit the right chord and its success has proved that moviebuffs are coming of age too.

It's a well-known fact that Aamir Khan doesn't believe in award functions but in the past the actor-filmmaker did make an exception as far as the National Awards were concerned. But now Aamir has revealed that as a company policy, Aamir Khan Productions, wouldn't be sending their films to compete at any award function, not even the coveted National Award. It may be recalled that earlier this year Anusha Rizvi (director of Peepli Live) was upset at her film not being sent to the National Awards but it being the producer's decision she couldn't do much about it. Aamir has gone on to say that for him, awards really don't matter and the only thing that matters is the audiences' response to his films.
