Review by Mark Longden
Writer / producer / director Kelly Parks has been busy making a name for himself in the horror business, and has found something of a muse in TV legend Gary Graham. The two of them have worked together on virtually all Parks’ work, and so it continues with “Demon Protocol”, a movie that falls somewhere between short film and feature (it’s a little under an hour), and is therefore a fine choice if you’re a little pushed for time.
Pretty much the entire movie takes place in the living room of a suburban house, as a pair of homeowners have invited exorcists into their home to take care of a demon problem. They’re a religious group, of an unspecified but potentially unusual variety, and have all sorts of fun tech gadgets.
After starting with a 911 call which wanders into the world of comedy, thinking it might be light,...

You never know what you might find when you check your Facebook page. Just the other day I had a message from Kelly Parks, a writer/producer at Unconventional Films, telling me about the web series Universal Dead. Kelly included the magic word "zombie", so of course we checked it out, and here for you to check out also are the first three episodes!
Synopsis:
Planet Earth is ravaged by a strange disease that turns people into mindless murderers. As civilization struggles to survive, a small team of Us Navy SEALs must protect a doctor from the Center for Disease Control on a mission to evaluate the claims of an erratic scientist who may have discovered the secret to mankind's salvation.
The series is directed by Vernon Mortensen and stars D.B. Sweeney, Gary Graham, and Doug Jones.
For more info visit the official Universal Dead website, and "like" Universal Dead on Facebook.

We talk with Kelly Parks, screenwriter of the Universal Dead web series, soon to be a feature film.
We took notice of the zombie web series Universal Dead because of the strong production value and cast. When Universal Dead announced they were going to be turned into into a feature film with Paramount distributing, we had to talk with screenwriter Kelly Parks, who describes himself as "America's only ex-cia rocket scientist stand-up comic screenwriter."
Kelly was kind enough to answer some of our questions via email.
Haz: How did this project start and what was your background before Universal Dead?
Kelly Parks: My business partners (Vernon Mortensen and Neil Trusso) and I are lifelong zombie movie fans so of course we had to do something zombie related. I came up with an idea based on my personal theory about how zombies might work and I wrote that as a...

Who's a big winner?
io9 has run a piece about the winners and losers at this year's Comic-Con and proclaimed webseries Universal Dead to be one of the "winners." Why? Because the series is heading for to the big screen, as announced earlier this month.
While our request to interview writer/producer Kelly Parks has gone unanswered (so far), the folks at everyone's favorite site SciFinal chatted with Parks, who elaborated on the feature adaptation.
We're working out the final details but it will be released through Paramount sometime next year. I'm pretty sure that will make us the first web series ever to make the jump to the Big Screen.
Parks also revealed that the web series "would have" ran for 10 free episodes before ending up on DVD, but that plan is now altered because of Paramount's interest. I would like to announce to SciFinal that "big screen" does not need to capitalized.

Episode 3 of the popular webseries.
Web series Universal Dead recently announced that it is becoming a feature film, and has just released another installment. In episode 3, Doug Jones (Hellboy) explores the zombie problem that he and Cdc representative Gary Graham disagree on. Episode 3 asks the unanswered question, "Do zombies shit?" It also raises a correlation between zombies and other members of the undead. (we highly recommend watching Episode 1 and Episode 2 before watching Episode 3.
The popular webseries is written by Kelly Parks and directed by Vernon Mortenson. And yes, that was D.B. Sweeney.

The little web series that could.
Universal Dead, the web series starring D.B. Sweeney, Doug Jones, and Gary Graham, is going to be made into a feature film.
How do we know? Because writer Kelly Parks attached the press release to a comment on our humble little site (Kelly, you can always write me at fulci@hugazombie.com).
Check it out:

Web series are often the passion projects of those who create them and can become a reflection of their backgrounds and talents. After all, the adage is "write what you know". So imagine what kind of web series would come out of someone whose short bio is "I am America's only ex-cia, rocket scientist, stand-up-comic screenwriter. No, really." It'd probably look something like Universal Dead. Reminiscent of the classic zombie storytelling of George Romano, the series opens on a breathtaking helicopter view of a ravaged landscape. We quickly learn that the planet is consumed by a strange disease that turns people into mindless murderers. A small team of Us Navy SEALs must protect a doctor from the Center for Disease Control on a mission to evaluate the claims of an erratic scientist who may have discovered the secret to mankind's salvation. Let's go back a second: this show opens with a Helicopter Shot.

Web series Universal Dead has released episode 2, and finally starts to get to the root of the problem: the argument between whether the zombies are "undead" or "infected."
Web series Universal Dead has released episode 2, and finally starts to get to the root of the problem: the argument between whether the zombies are "undead" or "infected."
Episode 1 showed Gary Graham as a Cdc representative and a team of Navy SEALs heading to a compound in a landscape filled with the undead, though Graham claims that the "zombies" are the product of a disease and are not undead. Enter Doug Jones (Hellboy) in Episode 2 as a looney tunes scientist who believes the contrary, and wants to prove that the zombies has some theory about the undead that he wants to show Graham. The Cdc's claim that the undead are merely infected seems a logical and realistic approach to a government's response,...

Death is universal. And so are zombies, apparently, and they’re currently everywhere, including the Interwebs. Check out the first two episodes of Kelly Parks’s ongoing web series “Universal Dead”, directed by Vernon Mortensen and starring Doug Jones (“Hellboy”), D.B. Sweeney (“24″), Gary Graham (“Alien Nation”), and a bunch of badass former Navy SEALs playing badass Navy SEALs. Both episodes total about 10 minutes, so it’s a pretty easy sit-through. Not a whole lot of action, though, which is disappointing. I’m not entirely sure where they’re going from here, but hopefully the SEALs will get more face time. Planet Earth is ravaged by a strange disease that turns people into mindless murderers. As civilization struggles to survive, a small team of Us Navy SEALs must protect a doctor from the Center for Disease Control on a mission to discover the secret to mankind’s salvation. Facing endless attacks...

Get some Navy SEALs together and what do they want to do? Make a webseries about the living dead starring D.B. Sweeney, Gary Graham, and Doug Jones and put together by producer/director Vernon Mortensen and producer/writer Kelly Parks.
The first episode looks capably shot, but very much like a SyFy channel movie (seriously, who approved that new spelling, SyFy?), which is a good thing or a bad thing depending on your love of SyFy original movies. I'd say that after one episode, it's worth at least seeing what will come next. Check out the synopsis and first episode below.

Nope, it’s not another installment in the Universal Monsters reboot, but a new online series that will debut “around March 15th,” according to screenwriter Kelly Parks, whom I “spoke” to via Facebook last night. The trailer looks pretty impressive for a low-budget effort, and the cast is impressive, too: Gary Graham, D.B. Sweeney... “We were very lucky to get Doug Jones,” Parks told me. (You remember Jones as Abe Sapien in the Hellboy movies.) The series will eventually be available in a more traditional format, says Parks:...
