More than 100 key figures from the UK film and TV industry have signed a letter urging the UK government to take “immediate action” against Iranian authorities for “gross violations of human rights and women’s rights” in their response to the wave of public protests that erupted last year.
The industry leaders, including Barbara Broccoli, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, and Edgar Wright, are calling for the UK government to “actively campaign to stop the violence used against the protesters in Iran, including an immediate stop to all executions” and “demand the release of all political prisoners in Iran.”
“Enough is enough. If the global community, which the UK is an active and influential member of, does not act firmly, these atrocities will continue,” the letter reads. “We need to sincerely support the people of Iran in their fight for justice and freedom.”

Among the almost 100 names to have signed the letter, which is still circulating and gathering attention, are Olivia Colman, Martin McDonagh, Jessie Buckley, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Brett Goldstein, Jonathan Pryce, Hugh Bonneville, Richard Curtis, Gillian Anderson, Felicity Jones, George Mackay, Edgar Wright and Hayley Atwell.

The non-linear storytelling in "Station Eleven" makes for even more uneasy moments than your average story about a catastrophic global pandemic. Any scenes that take place before most of the world's population dies out carry an ominous weight to them. "Station Eleven," post-apocalyptic fiction, and recent world events all remind us that while the disease is scary, it is often our fellow humans who pose the greatest threat in these situations.
Among the more foreboding multi-episode storylines set in the early stages of the pandemic is the lockdown of young Kirsten (Matilda Lawler), Jeevan (Himesh Patel), and Frank (Nabhaan Rizwan) in Frank's Chicago loft apartment. While we watch them surviving under difficult circumstances, we do so with basically no hope. We know they end up separated, so we can only clutch the edge of our seats and wait for episode 7's climactic moment.
Though the groundwork for tragedy is laid throughout the series,...

It takes a lot to be a bombshell. Emmy Rossum transformed into busty billboard queen Angelyne for the eponymous Peacock series, premiering May 19, but the physical embodiment of the performance artist took a toll on the “Shameless” alum.
Rossum, who also executive produces the series alongside husband and “Mr. Robot” creator Sam Esmail, revealed that she spent an average of four to five hours in makeup every day and bleached her eyebrows for the role. Per The Hollywood Reporter, Rossum also got blisters from the fake breasts and suffered tear duct issues from wearing two pairs of contact lenses.
“The physicality of the character was challenging,” Rossum told the outlet. “The body is heavy, yet it has to feel light and effervescent…I found it to be completely liberating to look in the mirror and not see myself at all. At first, it’s unnerving. But feeling lost gives way...

Years into the Covid-19 pandemic, “Station Eleven” suggests we got off easy.
Both the 2014 novel by Emily St. John Mandel and its limited-series adaptation on HBO Max tell the story of a viral plague that decimates the world’s population too quickly for any response. Novel and TV show alike depict both the first moments of global spread and the state of things 20 years on, in a hardscrabble world where humanity’s remnants seek moments of poetry.
Admirers of the timeline-hopping book will be pleased to know that this adaptation, created by Patrick Somerville, attempts to keep Mandel’s style alive. In the main story, an actor named Kirsten (Mackenzie Davis), who’d lived through the beginning of the flu crisis as a child (played in flashback by Matilda Lawler), journeys the Midwest with her performance troupe, the Traveling Symphony. That series-long arc is studded with flashbacks to folks tied,...

Ucp is developing dark comedy series The Resort from Andy Siara, writer of Sundance breakout Palm Springs, and Sam Esmail’s Esmail Corp, which is under a deal with Ucp, a division of NBCUniversal Content Studios. Anonymous Content is producing. The series will be shopped to premium and streaming platforms.
The Resort explores love and the weird things we do in the name of it, encased in an elaborate true-crime conspiracy, with each season set in a unique picturesque vacation destination. The first season takes place at an all-inclusive resort along the Mayan Riviera, when a married couple on the brink of divorce inadvertently becomes embroiled in one of the Yucatan’s most bizarre, unsolved mysteries that, somehow, is part metaphysical detective story, part Indiana Jones-esque adventure, part coming-of-age romance.
The Siara-written Palm Springs, which stars Andy Samberg and Cristin Milioti, is one of the buzziest titles coming out...

NBCUniversal revealed a lot of details regarding their new streaming service, which is called Peacock, which is obviously a nod to NBC’s iconic logo.
The company also unveiled its initial programming slate. We already reported on the reboot of Battlestar Galactica from Mr. Robot creator Sam Esmail, as well as Saved By the Bell with Mario Lopez, Mark-Paul Gosselaar and Elizabeth Berkley set to star; and Punky Brewster, with Soleil Moon Frye set to reprise her role as the title character.
There are a lot of other original shows coming to Peacock, though, along with catalogue series and library films. There will also be original films that will be created by Universal Pictures, Focus Features, and DreamWorks Animation.
Peacock will launch in April of 2020. It will be both advertising and subscription supported streaming service. Details on pricing and distribution will be announced as it gets closer to launch.

NBCUniversal has unveiled a broad range of programming for the first slate of originals for its streaming service, which has officially been dubbed Peacock.
Perhaps the biggest titled announced for the service is a reboot of the classic sci-fi series “Battlestar Galactica,” with “Mr. Robot” creator Sam Esmail executive producing. This is the third version of the series to make it to television. The original aired for one season in 1978 on ABC, which was followed by a short-lived continuation called “Galactica 1980.” Sci Fi Channel (now Syfy) then rebooted the series back in 2003 with a three-hour miniseries whose cast included Edward James Olmos and Mary McDonnell among others. The success of that project led Syfy and Sky Television to commission a new series with the cast of the miniseries returning. That show ran for four seasons and also spawned two TV movies, wrapping up in 2009. A prequel series, “Caprica,” aired...

The BBC and Netflix have revealed the first glimpse at Toni Collette-fronted relationship drama Wanderlust.
The six-part series, which airs later this year, explores the relationships of a multi-generational family. It is produced by Doctor Foster producer Drama Republic.
Wanderlust looks at how people build and maintain happy relationships and asks whether lifelong monogamy is possible – or even desirable. Collette plays Joy Richards, a therapist trying to find a way to keep her spark alive with her husband after a cycling accident causes them to reassess their relationship. As we meet her family, friends, neighbours and clients, remarkable yet relatable stories of love, lust and forbidden desire emerge.
The show is written by British playwright Nick Payne (Constellations), in his TV debut, and directed by Luke Snellin (The A Word). Lucy Tcherniak (The End of the F***ing World) will helm the second block of the series.

There’s something curious about the new Netflix series “The End of the F***ing World”: the kids want to be adults and adults want to be kids. Alyssa and James, two wayward teens looking for something to rebel against and to hit fast-forward on their adolescence, make for a fascinating run-and-gun team as they encounter the pitfalls of young adulthood and a lot more than they bargained for.
But aside from being an unapologetic example of onscreen teen angst, the show also has an incredible secret weapon in a truly smashing soundtrack, almost entirely populated by rock classics from decades past. By using these songs from a different time, “The End of the F***ing World” shows that the two main characters are not only lost in their own worlds, but looking for a place to belong that maybe isn’t even in their own millennium.

Out now on Netflix, new 8-part comic book adaptation is an all-round winner. Great writing, top performances, well-paced and stylish…
Contains plot references to episode 1, but no spoilers.
See related Agents Of Shield season 5 episode 7 trailer and synopsis
Between its punk title and an opening few minutes that reference child self-mutilation, animal killing, psychopathy and murder, The End Of The F***ing World starts off by weeding out the weak. Meet teenagers James and Alyssa, it says, he’s a monster and she’s angry. You won’t like them.
You will though, you’ll even come to love them. Just as the spikiest people can be the most vulnerable, this show’s aggressive nihilism conceals a tender and romantic centre. Its eight episodes are essentially the story of two young people damaged by abandonment who find temporary solace in each other. With a bit of murder.
Seventeen-year-old James has a plan.
