It’s that time of year again. While some directors annually share their favorite films of the year, Steven Soderbergh lists everything he consumed, media-wise. For 2023––another year in which he not only Magic Mike’s Last Dance Review: Steven Soderbergh and Channing Tatum Take a Familiar, Gentle Bow”>released a new film, but dropped two TV series (Full Circle and Command Z“>Command Z) and shot another film (the Sundance-bound Presence)––he still got plenty of watching in.

“She’s coming out,” a choreographer says over a P.A. system, sounding tense. “Everyone get your horns and masks on.” A couple of nights before the Grammys, 22 shirtless, flawlessly fit male dancers, each equipped with a bejeweled face mask and hazardous-looking black bull’s horns, line up on a rehearsal-studio stage within Sony Pictures’ Culver City lot, awaiting inspection.
Madonna struts out of a dressing room far across the studio, dressed in a matador outfit, sans pants.

New York Times-bestselling novelist Curtis Sittenfeld broke out with her 2005 debut “Prep,” which unpacked the layered coming-of-age of a teenager at a private boarding school. Since then, she’s spun “Pride and Prejudice” for the 21st century with 2016’s “Eligible” and reimagined the fictional lives of Laura Bush in “American Wife” and Hillary Clinton in “Rodham.” Now, with “Romantic Comedy,” Sittenfeld crafts a lighthearted romance between a late-night comedy writer and an aging pop star, framed within a smart, funny commentary about the dynamics and perceptions of celebrity relationships.
“Romantic Comedy” follows Sally Milz, who writes for a fictional “Saturday Night Live”-esque show called “The Night Owls.” While not necessarily cynical about love, Milz has had enough experiences under her belt to mitigate her own expectations romantically. When her friend and colleague, Danny Horst gets engaged to a gorgeous actress named Annabel Horst, Milz puts pen to paper to...

Hulu Passes On ‘Rodham’; 20th TV Is Shopping The Project With Claire Danes & Dakota Fanning Attached
Hulu has opted to pass on Rodham, an alternative history drama series about Hillary Rodham Clinton that had been in development at the streamer since 2020. Studio 20th Television is shopping the project to other streamers, however, with Claire Danes and Dakota Fanning “creatively attached,” sources close to the project confirm to Deadline.
The project, described as a provocative take on one of the most famous female American politicians of the past two decades, is based on the book by Curtis Sittenfeld. It comes from The Affair co-creator Sarah Treem, 20th TV and Warren Littlefield’s The Littlefield Company (The Handmaid’s Tale).
Treem will write and executive produce, and James Ponsoldt will direct.
It’s not clear what roles Danes and Fanning will play.
Rodham imagines an alternative history where Hillary Rodham never marries Bill Clinton and asks what would have happened to her life and our country, if she had made a different choice.

Four years after Hillary Clinton lost her final bid for the White House—even though she won the popular vote—there remains a lot of melancholic reflection about “what if” among her most dedicated supporters. Heck, there’s a lot of second-guessing, too, among some of her harshest critics with the current occupant of the Oval Office fumbling the development of a national strategy to deal with the coronavirus pandemic. So the prospect of a potential Rodham television series, and the alternate version of history it intends to offer, may appear to be a respite. With that said, it aims to rewrite the history of more than just the last four years.

Hulu has optioned the rights to Curtis Sittenfeld’s alternative history book “Rodham,” which takes place in a world in which Hillary Rodham never married Bill Clinton.
The series is described as telling the story of an ambitious young woman, developing her extraordinary mind in the latter part of the 20th century, moving from idealism to cynicism and all the way back again.
Sarah Treem is attached to write and executive produce the project. “The Handmaid’s Tale” executive producer Warren Littlefield will also executive produce “Rodham” via The Littlefield Company along with Sittenfeld. Fox 21 Television Studios, where Littlefield is under an overall deal, will produce.
Should the show go to series, it would be the second project focused on Hillary Clinton that Hulu has aired. The streamer debuted the four-part docuseries “Hillary” back in March. That series chronicled her 2016 presidential campaign while also delving into events from her past that shaped her life.

ABC has put in development Americanized, a half-hour comedy inspired by Sara Saedi’s memoir Americanized: Rebel Without A Green Card, from Reese Witherspoon’s Hello Sunshine and ABC Studios, where Hello Sunshine has a broadcast overall deal.
Written by Saedi (iZombie), Americanized tells the story of a loving and off-beat Iranian family who’s been living with a huge secret: they’re undocumented immigrants. Told through an irreverent, heartfelt and a-political lens, the series will give viewers a window into the life of a Middle-Eastern household while exploring the universal truths that bond every type of “American” family.
In the book, Saedi shares her story of growing up in San Jose, California in a loving Iranian family and her shock when she discovers she and the rest of her family are undocumented.
Saidi executive produces with Hello Sunshine’s Witherspoon and Lauren Levy Neustadter. ABC Studios is the studio.

The company is also partnering with Hulu on a limited series adaptation of Celeste Ng’s 2017 bestseller “Little Fires Everywhere” that will feature Witherspoon and Kerry Washington; a 10-episode comedy series for Apple that was created by Colleen McGuinness (“30 Rock”) and inspired by Curtis Sittenfeld’s short-story collection “You Think It, I’ll Say It”; and “Are You Sleeping,...

As the streaming wars continue to unfold—with Netflix, Amazon, and Hulu preparing to stake their respective claims at the Emmys Sept. 17—the great unknown remains what role Apple will play in an increasingly pitched competition. The world’s first trillion-dollar company has made plenty of waves with their announced programming, thanks to deals with high-profile creators like Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon, Kumail Nanjiani and Emily V. Gordon, and M. Night Shyamalan. But a few titles, loglines, and well-known names are all that’s so far known about the TV plans of a company that generally operates in secrecy whether revealing a new iPhone model or a new entertainment platform.
Here are a few of the biggest questions about the tech giant’s foray into streaming—ones that executives across the business may well be asking as they wait to see just how a new, deep-pocketed player disrupts an already-unstable industry.

Kristen Wiig is stepping down as star of the half-hour comedy series being developed for Apple by Reese Witherspoon, due to scheduling conflicts with the production of the “Wonder Woman” sequel, an individual with knowledge of the situation told TheWrap. The show is now on hold as Apple and the show’s producers consider their options, including finding a new lead actress.
Inspired by Curtis Sittenfeld’s upcoming short story collection “You Think It, I’ll Say It,” the project from Witherspoon’s Hello Sunshine received a 10-episode order, and was set to become Apple’s first half-hour scripted comedy. Wiig signed onto the series when it was ordered in January, and was set to executive produce as well as star.
However, Wiig joined “Wonder Woman 1984” just two months later. That film is currently in production, with Wiig playing classic DC comics villain Cheetah. The superhero sequel’s shooting schedule,...

Apple’s aggressive A-list push into television has hit a snag. SNL vet Kristen Wiig — who earlier this year signed on to headline an untitled comedy series for the tech giant — has departed the project due to a scheduling conflict, Deadline reports.
Inspired by You Think It, I’ll Say It, a collection of short stories by Curtis Sittenfeld, the sitcom received a 10-episode straight-to-series order from Apple back in January. It would’ve marked Wiig’s first series-regular TV role since her SNL days.

Exclusive: Saturday Night Live alumna Kristen Wiig has departed Apple’s upcoming comedy series, which she was attached to star in and executive produce, because of a scheduling conflict with Wonder Woman. The untitled half-hour project, inspired by Curtis Sittenfeld’s short story collection You Think It, I’ll Say It, is currently on hold as Apple and the producers evaluate their options, including proceeding with a different actress.
Apple closed a deal for a straight-to-series order to the comedy from Reese Witherspoon’s Hello Sunshine, in early January. Two months later, Wiig was cast as a villain in the upcoming Wonder Woman sequel. Her obligations to the tentpole feature, in which she plays Cheetah, made her unavailable to do the Apple series in the time frame designated for it as the multihyphenate also has other projects on her plate.

It’s the biggest question in Hollywood that everyone is asking, and no one has an answer yet: What will Apple’s upcoming video offering actually look like, and how will it be delivered to viewers?
“I don’t know, and nobody knows, and it makes me nervous,” said one top Hollywood agent. “I’d sell one-off deals with Apple all day long. But I’d never do a [major, long-term talent deal] with them because I don’t know what it means to be an Apple show. How do they market it? Where’s it going to show up? How are people going to see it? It makes no sense to me.”
All is expected to be revealed later this fall, as Apple gears up to enter an already saturated marketplace in early 2019. The competition is fierce: Netflix has 125 million customers globally, while Amazon just revealed that Prime has 100 million consumers. Hulu is also in the mix,...

SNL alum Kristen Wiig is set to star in a new comedy series being produced by Reese Witherspoon. Apple just landed the 10-episode series, which is inspired by Curtis Sittenfeld's upcoming short-story collection You Think It, I'll Say It.

Former President George W. Bush got his pop culture turn in Oliver Stone's W., starring Josh Brolin with Elizabeth Banks as Laura Bush, and now a fictionalized First Lady will get her own screen vehicle. Curtis Sittenfeld's bestselling novel American Wife is being turned into a film, and I kind of wish they'd just recast Banks. She's got the chops for a more dramatic version of her W. role.

Exclusive: Ron Nyswaner has been set to adapt American Wife, the bestselling novel by Curtis Sittenfeld. The project is being funded by Red Crown Productions, whose Daniel Crown and Daniela Taplin Lundberg are producing with Marissa McMahon’s Kamala Films. Nyswaner, best known for scripting Philadelphia and The Painted Veil, will adapt a novel that follows the First Lady as she reviews her life on a day in which a scandalous secret threatens her husband’s presidency, and their marriage. When the book was published in 2009, speculation was the characters were modeled after President George W.
