The songs in the running for the 2024 Best Original Song Oscar are “It Never Went Away” (“American Symphony”), “I’m Just Ken” (“Barbie”), “What Was I Made For?” (“Barbie”), “The Fire Inside” (“Flamin’ Hot”), and “Wahzhazhe (A Song for My People)” (“Killers of the Flower Moon”). Our current odds show that “What Was I Made For?” (31/10)) is favored to win, followed in order by “I’m Just Ken” (37/10), “It Never Went Away” (9/2), “The Fire Inside” (9/2), and “Wahzhazhe” (9/2).
This year’s roster of eight individual songwriters includes two pairs of former winners, each of which is associated with a “Barbie” song. Those who prevailed most recently are sibling duo Billie Eilish and Finneas O’Connell, whose bid for “What Was I Made For?” comes two years after they took the gold for the title tune from the “James Bond” movie “No Time to Die” (2022). Two of the most joyous cinematic moments of the year came when unlikely characters raised their voices in song. In “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” Jack Black brought the house down as Bowser with his plaintive plea to “Peaches.” And Ryan Gosling stole the show in “Barbie” with his declaration of independence, “I’m Just Ken.” Sure, both tones hit our collective funny bones but they also get to our hearts.
“Peaches” is a power ballad sung by Bowser at the piano in his lair. He confesses his love for Princess Peach (Anya Taylor-Joy) and reveals the motives behind his villainous activity — “everything I do, I do it for you” vibes. He is desperate to win the Princess’ hand in marriage because he loves her. Black’s voice is perfect for the song as his passion increases into a mad crescendo. It’s easily the best and most memorable part of the movie.

Zoya Akhtar’s The Archies has become the talk of town from the moment it popped on Netflix. With a lot of vibrant energy and a slew of new Bollywood kids, the musical is being adored by many. There are naysayers who are not particularly happy with the amateurish acting from the cast and the overall naivety of the entire plot, but that only proves The Archies is going to stick around for a while. Hence, we thought it’d be a good idea to conjure a list of films that have a similar vibe. Whether you are digging The Archies or not, at least a few movies from this list should work for you.
Kuch Kuch Hota Hain (1998)
The Archies is not the first time Bollywood has attempted to adapt the popular comics. Twenty-five years ago, a very young Karan Johar thought it would be cool to mold Archie,...

What separates Loki from the rest of Marvel’s Disney+ series is its bold and inspired choices across every department, and chief among them is Natalie Holt’s genre-bending score.
The British composer brought the otherworldly sound of the theremin back to the fore, calling to mind the sci-fi and genre films of the ‘50s. She also created instant emotion through the nyckelharpa, a Nordic instrument that has both fiddle and harp qualities. The result of Holt’s efforts has led to one of Marvel’s most memorable scores, if not the most, as well as two Emmy nominations and two high-profile jobs as the composer of Obi-Wan Kenobi and Batgirl.
On Loki season two, Holt has doubled down on experimentation alongside her thereminist, Charlie Draper. She even cameoed as one of the band members who performed in the 1890s beer hall that director Kasra Farahani’s “1893” recreated. In between setups,...

Barbie, Spider-Man, Black Panther – visions of dolls and comic-book characters inevitably will be dancing in the heads of Grammy voters when they sit down to nominate movie music for this year’s golden gramophones.
“Barbie: The Album” seems a shoo-in to compete for best compilation soundtrack, the category for movies dominated by songs. But the Metro Boomin-curated album for the animated “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” also topped Billboard’s soundtrack chart this year and seems likely to swing into competition.
On a similar note, the third edition of “Guardians of the Galaxy” film inspired another “Awesome Mix” that was hugely popular and seems poised to join its two predecessors as a Grammy nominee. The “Fast X” album and Disney’s live-action “The Little Mermaid,” with its new songs by Alan Menken and Lin-Manuel Miranda, could also make it onto the ballot.

Just as the Venice Film Festival was establishing itself as one of the most thrilling red carpets on the festival and awards show circuit — in 2022, The New York Times called its fashion parade the “most glamorous” of the year thanks to wow appearances from Timothée Chalamet, Tessa Thompson and Florence Pugh — the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes are stamping out a significant portion of the Hollywood star power and its attendant style at the 80th edition of the event.

[But] Cannes will certainly be considered more prestigious this year as the strike by American actors was not underway in May.”

While it’s still uncertain how many U.S. movie stars will be attending the upcoming Venice Film Festival, the fest has announced a series of masterclasses to be held by top directors including Wes Anderson, Edward Berger, Damien Chazelle and Nicolas Winding Refn.
Several of the Venice masterclasses are dedicated to helmers being lauded by the fest such as “The Night Porter” director Liliana Cavani, who is being celebrated with a Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement, and Anderson, who will receive the fest’s Cartier Glory to the Filmmaker Award.
Refn will pay tribute to late Italian horror master Ruggero Deodato, whose 1980 film “Cannibal Holocaust” is considered one of the goriest movies of all time.
Chazelle, who presides over year’s Venice competition jury, will hold his class with composer and regular collaborator Justin Hurwitz, with whom he has worked on “Whiplash,” “First Man” and “La La Land.” Multiple...

One of the biggest surprises and most joyous moments of “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” was when Jack Black‘s villainous Bowser took to the piano and roared out the power ballad “Peaches.” The song was the funniest ballad we’d ever seen…. until “Barbie” came out.” That movie featured Ryan Gosling‘s Ken singing the tune “I’m Just Ken,” backed up by a bunch of other Kens including Simu Liu, Ncuti Gatwa, and Kingsley Ben-Adir.
It’s strange, curious, and fantastic that two films have been released this year that feature hilarious ballads as key moments in their films for their story’s villains. As such, we expect both songs to compete for Best Original Song this year purely for their sheer popularity. Our odds chart for this category isn’t yet up, however. For now, we’re just focusing on the chances of these two songs only.

Composer Justin Hurwitz, a four-time Academy Award nominee and two-time winner in 2017 for the six-time Oscar-winning musical “La La Land,” will conduct that score and songs live-to-film with a 52-piece symphony orchestra and jazz band during a screening of the movie at Los Angeles State Historic Park overlooking the downtown L.A. skyline on September 16 at 8 p.m.
Hurwitz earned an Oscar for the “La La Land” original score and shared an Academy Award for the original song “City of Stars” with Benj Pasek and Justin Paul. “‘La La Land’ in Concert” is being put on by Street Food Cinema in collaboration with Hurwitz Concerts and Lionsgate, the latter of which produced the film that was written and directed by Damien Chazelle. Chazelle won an Oscar for his direction. The film grossed $151 million in North America and $446 million worldwide against a $30 million production budget.

After taking on apartheid and economic inequality with “District 9” and “Elysium,” Neill Blomkamp was finally prepared to make a film about the world’s most oppressed social class: gamers.
Rather than a straight adaptation of the video game that shares its name, “Gran Turismo” is a celebration of the people who play it. It’s a pious ode to Sony’s wondrous PlayStation system (anyone with even the slightest grievances with “Air” or “Blackberry” should steer clear of this one), and a grating middle finger to anyone who dares suggest that the answers to a gamer’s problems might lie outside the “Call of Duty” lobby.
It’s also a thrilling retelling of one of the craziest stories in recent sports history, shot with the level of skillful spectacle that the source material demands. Blomkamp might have directed the best 90-minute sports movie of the decade — it’s just...

The films in the running for the 2023 Best Original Score Oscar are “All Quiet on the Western Front,” “Babylon,” “The Banshees of Inisherin,” “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” and “The Fabelmans.” Our current odds indicate that “Babylon” (69/20) will take the prize, followed in order of likelihood by “All Quiet on the Western Front” (19/5), “The Fabelmans” (4/1), “The Banshees of Inisherin” (9/2), and “Everything Everywhere All at Once” (9/2).
Four of the seven individual artists included in this lineup are returning contenders, with the newcomer subset consisting of Son Lux bandmates and fellow “Everything Everywhere All at Once” nominees Rafiq Bhatia, Ian Chang, and Ryan Lott. Bhatia and Chang are two of only nine Asian composers to ever achieve academy recognition and could become the first such champions since A. R. Rahman (“Slumdog Millionaire”) in 2009.

“Babylon” only has three Oscar nominations, but if you go by the odds, it will win two of them: Best Production Design, which it’s dominated all season, and Best Original Score, where Justin Hurwitz has recently lost some ground to “All Quiet on the Western Front,” composed by Volker Bertelmann. That race could come down to the wire and wind up a whole lot closer than the composers’ first Oscar showdown.
Hurwitz and Bertelmann have faced off at the Oscars before, though you might not realize it at first glance. Bertelmann also performs under the name Hauschka, which was how he was credited for his “Lion” (2016) score, co-written with Dustin O’Halloran. That season, Hauschka and O’Halloran lost the Golden Globe, Critics Choice Award, BAFTA and Oscar to Hurwitz, who swept for “La La Land.”
While it was obvious Hurwitz would win the Oscar back then, that’s not the case this time around.

Since breaking multiple records at the BAFTA Awards, many pundits are wondering how many trophies “All Quiet on the Western Front” can win at the Oscars. After surprising at the British ceremony with seven wins, the German war drama is the most awarded non-English film at the BAFTAs ever, breaking the previous record of “Cinema Paradiso,” which won five awards in 1991. The Netflix film also is the first to win the BAFTA for Best Film without receiving any of the top category nominations at the Golden Globes, the Critics’ Choice, the PGA, or the SAG Awards. But how many will it actually win come Oscar night? Since BAFTA is one of the biggest reliable precursors, let’s look at the categories it won that it is also up for at the Oscars and examine the odds of where it stands at possibly winning. (This excludes Best Director since Edward Berger...

Can you imagine being nominated in this category and hearing the very last nominee’s name, and it’s the one and only John Williams, who has received 53 Oscar nominations and won five times? Granted, it’s been almost 30 years since his name was last called on Oscar night, so maybe the other four nominees don’t have so much to worry about, but make no mistake that this is a highly competitive year.

Damien Chazelle’s “Babylon” has a strong possibility to win two Oscars on Sunday night despite it only receiving three bids, all in technical categories. What Kyle Smith in the Wall Street Journal called “one of the year’s richest and most ambitious films” is up for Academy Award nominations in Best Costume Design, Best Production Design and Best Score. Although it’s not a favorite to win for its costumes — “Elvis” and “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” have better shots there, per Gold Derby odds — it can absolutely win both production design and score. Here are the five reasons “Babylon” will win two Oscars on March 12.
1. Academy voters will want to reward the film somewhere.
Although some of the response to the Paramount Pictures film was mixed, there’s been a lot of passion for “Babylon” in the months since its release. If Oscar voters want to reward a film...

The final stretch of the 2023 Oscar season has started with voters casting their ballots for the winners of the 95th annual Academy Awards. Volker Bertelmann, ‘All Quiet on the Western Front’
Composer Bertelmann grew up reading the 1929 novel “All Quiet on the Western Front’ when he was in school, which served as the basis for the 1930 Best Picture winner and the new 2022 Netflix adaptation. He recalls the advice that director Edward Berger gave him about how he wanted to film to sound: “I want to have a music for the stomach of Paul Bäumer, who’s the main protagonist. I want to have destruction. And I want to have a snare that is played by somebody who can’t play the snare…...

If there’s going to be a surprise win in Best Picture at this year’s Oscars, look no further than “The Banshees of Inisherin.” Aside from its Golden Globe win for Best Film Musical/Comedy, “Banshees” failed to take the top prize with any major group this season, but that didn’t stop it from mounting upsets in other key categories. If the dark horse spirit that earned it major Globe and BAFTA wins continues into Oscar night, director/writer/producer Martin McDonagh could find himself with his first Oscar statuette in a feature film category.
McDonagh is already an Oscar winner for his 2006 live-action short “Six Shooter,” but he came up short for his work on the feature films “In Bruges” in 2009 and “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” in 2018. Oscar-winning composer Justin Hurwitz has found himself back in the awards race this season, having garnered both a Golden Globe win and an Oscar nomination for his lavish Babylon score. Creating music that complemented the decadence and destructive glamor of 1920s Hollywood found in Damien Chazelle’s Babylon required a lot of experimentation. From using “kazoos and slide whistles” to “wooden floorboards” and multicultural percussionists amongst other unique instruments, Hurwitz and his 98-piece orchestra managed to execute the larger-than-life sounds and eclectic mix of tunes throughout the score, especially that of soundtrack highlight “Voodoo Mama.” In the behind-the-scenes video featured above, Hurwitz provides an in-depth look at the rich and explosive ensemble of harmonies influenced by diverse and modern sounds. “Babylon mixes up a lot of influences,” he tells Deadline. “It has some jazz influences, rock ‘n’ roll, and contemporary dance music in the music. There’s a lot of Middle Eastern and Latin flavors,...

In what may be the most difficult-to-predict score competition in years, the original-music Oscar could go to a sentimental favorite, a past nominee or the newcomer to the race. Academy members begin voting today.
Legendary composer John Williams broke records again by becoming the most nominated living person, earning the highest number of nominations ever in the music categories, and becoming the oldest nominee ever for a competitive award. He is 91.
His nomination for “The Fabelmans” surprised some outsiders, as his fairly spare score is often overshadowed by the several classical pieces performed by Mitzi (Michelle Williams), the character based on director Steven Spielberg’s piano-playing mom. But it passed the 35% rule — that is, more than a third of the total musical content must be original dramatic score — or it would have been disqualified by the Academy’s strict music-branch executive committee.

According to our current combined predictions, “Babylon” is the front-runner to win Best Original Score with 17/5 odds at this year’s Oscars. However, it is the only contender in the lineup that does not have a corresponding Best Picture nomination. Each of the other four nominees — “All Quiet on the Western Front,” “The Banshees of Inisherin,” “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” and “The Fabelmans” — do. Can “Babylon” overcome that hurdle?
Set in Los Angeles during the 1920s, “Babylon” traces the rise and fall of multiple characters at a time when the film industry was transitioning from the silent era to the talkies. Justin Hurwitz may have already won the Golden Globe for his work on “Babylon,” but that movie had four other nominations from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (including Best Film Comedy/Musical). Every year, there are some truly exceptional songs featured in motion pictures.
Disney and Bond films are almost always guaranteed nominations from the Academy in the Best Original Song category, often winning (as "No Time To Die" did last year).
However, there are plenty of songs that have stood the test of time that you may not even know were Oscar-nominated -- or even that they were originally from a film!

It’s anybody’s game: this is a rare year when any of the five original-score nominees could win the Oscar. Two of the nominees are previous winners, two more are past nominees; only one is a newcomer, and it’s a three-man ensemble.
Four films are period pieces: an admired German-language war film, a character study set against the Irish civil war, an epic of late 1920s Hollywood, and a coming-of-age story for a young filmmaker in the ‘50s and ‘60s; the fifth is a wild, anarchic tale of a Chinese American family that saves the universe.
And the nominees are:
“All Quiet on the Western Front”
For this adaptation of the Erich Maria Remarque classic, German composer Volker Bertelmann used his great-grandmother’s turn-of-the-century harmonium, a pump organ whose carefully mic’d interior noises sounded to him like “a war machine.”
Bertelmann’s scary three-note “destruction” motive — which...

The current frontrunner to win the Best Score Oscar is Justin Hurwitz for “Babylon,” with 12 Gold Derby Experts predicting him, but I believe John Williams could surprise in this category for “The Fabelmans,” despite only having the support of two Experts: Sasha Stone (Awards Daily) and Susan King (Gold Derby). Williams’ nomination for “The Fabelmans” is his 53rd overall, which gives him the record for most Oscar bids for a living person; only Walt Disney has more with 59 total. Williams’ work in “The Fabelmans” has been celebrated by many critics, including Maria Lattila, who says in Why Now, “With a classic score from John Williams and precise direction from Spielberg, ‘The Fabelmans’ is one of the finest films about cinema itself.” Are we all underestimating the legendary composer’s chances to win? Here are my top five reasons.
1. He’s 91.
This might be the last chance the Academy gets to recognize John Williams again.

After dominating the BAFTAs with seven wins, Netflix’s “All Quiet on the Western Front” just went from Oscars wild card to potential juggernaut in the craft races, where it is tied with “Elvis” for the lead with six nominations. In addition to the BAFTA-winning three categories, Edward Berger’s German-language World War I epic also grabbed nominations for makeup and hairstyling, production design, and VFX.
“All Quiet” appears to be on a similar Oscar trajectory as “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” (2001), which also scored six craft noms. That’s a record for international features. Ang Lee’s martial arts spectacle (co-starring “Everything Everywhere All at Once” Best Actress nominee Michelle Yeoh) eventually won a record three craft awards: cinematography, original score, and art direction-set decoration (now production design). “All Quiet” hopes to at least match its success.

Justin Hurwitz met Damien Chazelle when both were freshmen in college. Nearly 20 years later, their composer-filmmaker synergy is perhaps the most dynamic in current movies. In Chazelle’s films, Hurwitz’s music is so intuitively synched to the storytelling that the visuals become more alive and happier, as his gorgeously repetitive riffs mix with each other and linger in our minds.
Hurwitz won a Best Score Oscar for Chazelle’s “La La Land” in 2017, along with another statuette for Best Original Song. He’s back at the ceremony again this year for his mighty, moody, idiosyncratic, intoxicating music for Chazelle’s extravagant 1920s Hollywood epic, “Babylon.”

All Quiet on the Western Front made good on its record number of BAFTA nominations with a major haul of wins at the film awards ceremony on Sunday night.
At London’s Royal Festival Hall, Netflix’s German anti-war epic took the BAFTAs for best film, alongside best adapted screenplay and best director, and hoovered up most of the craft honors for a total of seven gongs (a BAFTA record for a film not in the English language).

This year’s Oscar race for Best Original Score is the most interesting and competitive in years. You’ve got surprise composers Son Lux (“Everything Everywhere All at Once”) and Volker Bertelmann (“All Quiet on the Western Front”) going up against 90-year-old legend John Williams (“The Fabelmans”) and returnees Justin Hurwitz (“Babylon”) and Carter Burwell (“The Banshees of Inisherin”).
Which means there are several unusual components to this race. Four out of five films are Best Picture nominees (with “Babylon” as the outlier) and period pieces (with “Eeaao” as the contemporary multiverse entry), and there’s old-school versus new-school, with experimental rock band Son Lux taking on four celebrated vets: Williams has five Oscars and a record 53 nominations; Hurwitz has two Oscars for “La La Land” (score and original song “City of Stars”); and Burwell and Bertelmann have three and two nominations, respectively.
And not a clear favorite among them.
