Three young men head for a Montreal brothel in this uplifting, refreshingly non-judgmental road movie
This is a US remake of a 2013 Belgian comedy, itself based on a BBC documentary about disability rights activist Asta Philpot. Both features transform his true story into a refreshingly non-judgmental road movie in which three young men ditch their families and set off to a brothel in Montreal, hoping to get their “special” needs met.
Come As You Are would have been a worthwhile project even if it had been a shot-for-shot remake, repackaged for the subtitle-averse US market: the more people who get to see three-dimensional representation of people with disabilities, the better. But Erik Linthorst’s script makes improvements, too, including giving juvenile horndog Scotty (Grant Rosenmeyer) a talent for writing raps, and a delayed reveal of one crucial plot point. You may consider yourself the most pitiable speck in the universe,...

With the 2020 summer Olympics around the corner, the timing of the release of the IFC Films romantic comedy Olympic Dreams couldn’t be any more perfect — but this isn’t an ordinary rom-com or a film about the Olympics.
Directed by Jeremy Teicher, who co-wrote it with his wife and real-life Olympian Alexi Pappas and Nick Kroll (Big Mouth), the film was actually shot on location during the Olympic Winter Games in PyeongChang 2018 in Athletes Village. This marks the first time a feature was shot at a the Olympics. To add to that, the film was shot using improvisation of the script in just two weeks.
“Olympic Dreams is IFC Films to its core,” Arianna Bocco, Evp, Film Acquisitions & Production, tells Deadline. “It’s original, independent filmmaking.”

Too often, we define marginalized groups as targets of oppression or as social justice fighters, but rarely as just regular people who wake up every day, pee, go to work and have sex like the rest of the world. Director Richard Wong attempts to offer this more humanized narrative that centers on disabled characters in his surprisingly tender new comedy, “Come As You Are.”
But in doing so, he provokes a similarly important thought: Why are all the leads played by able-bodied actors?
Inspired by Asta Philpot’s real-life journey, “Come As You Are” is an intriguing rom-com slash coming-of-age tale along the lines of “American Pie,” except told through the perspective of three disabled young men with dreams of escaping their fiercely guarded lives and getting laid. The abrasive Scotty, who uses a wheelchair, lives with his mother and caregiver, Liz (Janeane Garofalo), who is tethered to him so...

The rare remake that’s actually a slight improvement on its predecessor, Richard Wong’s “Come as You Are” translates Geoffrey Enthoven’s 2011 Belgian “Hasta la Vista” to middle America. Other changes are less substantial, but this seriocomedy has a less formulaic feel than the original while remaining a crowd-pleasing buddy pic-caper with a soft-pedaled minority empowerment theme. Reception in real-world disabled communities may be somewhat muted by the casting of able-bodied actors in the lead roles. Nonetheless, it’s hard to entirely resist this loosely fact-inspired tale of three physically challenged men road-tripping to Montreal in order to lose their virginity at a “special needs” bordello.

Exclusive: Three disabled men, one no-nonsense nurse and a trip to a brothel that caters to people with special needs. That pretty much sums up the SXSW film Come As You Are directed by Richard Wong and written by Erik Linthorst.
Based on the 2011 Belgian film Hasta La Vista, the dramedy stars Grant Rosenmeyer, Hayden Szeto, and Ravi Patel as the aforementioned trio who escape their overbearing parents so that they can go to a Montreal brothel to lose their virginity and embrace their independence. Sidibe stars as a nurse who drives the three to said brothel and as seen from the brazenly funny clip above, she doesn’t take anyone’s lip — and don’t call her sweetheart.
The film also stars Janeane Garofalo and C.S. Lee. Executive producers are Franklin Leonard, Ted Reilly and Kelly Waller with Rosenmeyer, Barrett Stuart, and Jacqueline “Jj” Ingram serving as producers.

Stalberg's comedy, which he co-wrote with Erik Linthorst and Stephen Susco, stars Matt Bush as Henry, a smart kid on the way to being named valedictorian and taking off to MIT on an academic scholarship. On a seemingly normal day, he crashes into the principal's car while trying to avoid a head-on collision with Travis (Sean Marquette), the school stoner. The pair, once friends and now thrown together by circumstance, find themselves rekindling a tiny portion of their relationship and they share a joint, a simple mistake that takes on epic proportions when the principal Dr. Leslie, brilliantly played by an unrecognizable Michael Chiklis, announces mandatory drug testing of the entire student body with those failing being expelled. High School
Directed by John Stahlberg
Screenplay by Erik Linthorst and John Stalberg
2010, USA
The words “stoner comedy” give rise to odious associations, making one expect a haphazard, loosely plotted, and unfunny mess – and, in almost all cases, rightfully so. John Stahlberg’s riotous and very funny High School elides such easy dismissal through a combination of inspired casting, tireless comic energy and an irresistibly simple narrative hook.
Valedictorian candidate and all-around overachiever Henry (Matt Bush, best known as the fellow who tirelessly attacked Jesse Eisenberg’s balls in Adventureland) is only days away from securing his academic future when a chance encounter with childhood-friend-turned-stranger and general stoned layabout Travis (Sean Marquette) leads him to smoke pot for the first time in his life. Immediately following this brief indiscretion, his school’s relentlessly ordered principal (a bewigged Michael Chikis) announces that the entire school will be subject to a drug test,...

Splice - Written by Rusty Gordon
Rating: 7.5/10
Writers: Vincenzo Natali, Antoinette Terry Bryant & Doug Taylor (screenplay), Vincenzo Natali & Antoinette Terry Bryant (story) Director: Vincenzo Natali Cast: Sarah Polley, Adrien Brody, Delphine Chanéac
It might be cheap to say that if you enjoy David Cronenberg, you should enjoy Splice (using one man’s art to describe another’s). But there are obvious similarities between Splice and a large body of Cronenberg’s work (if you get the pun, I’m glad that you love Cronenberg too). The big one being a body used to create horror. But in this film, the body was never completely human.
Of course, if Splice was just a straight up rip-off of Cronenberg’s films it wouldn’t work because the two would be too similar. However, Splice director Vincenzo Natali is able to have his own fun while giving a respectful nod to master Cronenberg and his other influences.

High School tells the tale of straight-a, straight-laced student Henry Burke (Adventureland’s Matt Bush). He’s a good kid yet, on one fateful day, Henry makes one wrong move as he reconnects and reminisces with childhood-friend-turned-burn-out-pothead Travis Breaux (Sean Marquette) over a fatty joint. Bad timing for Henry to take up smoking the reefer, as the school’s gestapo, Principal Leslie Gordon (Michael Chiklis), along with the help of Vice PrincipalBrandon Ellis (Colin Hanks), enacts a plan to drug test the entire student body, expelling anyone who fails in hopes to reimage the school after an incident involving a spelling bee and a blazed student. High School is another Park City at Midnight film that will show at Sundance on January 24th at 11:30pm. A real life horror for character Henry Burke (Matt Bush), his admittance to a prestigious college comes into jeopardy when Principal Gordon (Michael Chiklis) institutes mandatory drug testing. Other stars include Adrien Brody (Splice), Colin Hanks (Untraceable), and Michael Vartan (Dead Man's Curve). Both comedy, thriller and a story about coming of age High School is full of "deviant characters" and "frenzied chaos" (Sundance). All the details on the film inside.

A mandatory drug test for all students is to be administered, failure of which will result in immediate expulsion. You can always count on Park City at Midnight section to deliver one groundbreaking film. It's hard to predict which one, but I'd go with "concept" over such things as cast, aesthetics or production budget. This theory isn't off the charts when you consider Black Dynamite, The Blair Witch Project and Saw got their starts in this section. Of the 8 selected below, I'm familiar with Rodrigo Cortes's Buried (which reminds me of the torment that the Dutch film The Vanishing caused me) and Vincent Natali's Splice which I believe received its world preem at Sitges. - You can always count on Park City at Midnight section to deliver one groundbreaking film. On Wednesday the Sundance Film Festival unveiled the films competing in late January 2010. Yesterday they announced the rest of the line-up of independent films vying for attention for industry types and the curious public.

Yesterday we got the list for the films playing in competition at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival and today we get the rest of the films that will be featured and there are quite a few that make 2010 look much stronger based on pedigree alone than I have seen in quite some time. Variety has a big write-up detailing the categories and more on the festival right here, but I am just going to offer up the titles and let you sort it all out.
The titles already in the RopeofSilicon database are linked.
Premieres
All films are from the United States unless otherwise noted Abel (Mexico-u.S.), the directorial debut of actor Diego Luna, written by Luna and Agusto Mendoza, about a peculiar young boy who, as he blurs reality and fantasy, takes over the responsibilities of a family man in his father's absence. With Jose Maria Yazpik, Karina Gidi,...

In addition to the competition titles which were announced yesterday, Sundance has announced the remainder of their line-up and it includes some titles we’re already familiar with along with a huge number of premieres.
Also on the docket are two new series: Next which showcases low/no budget films and Spotlight which highlights films which festival programmers deem worthy of extra love including Enter the Void (review) and Lourdes (the trailer for which I really liked).
I’m particularly excited to see some of the titles in the New Frontier program but overall, the line-up is an impressive one but the Kristen Stewart fan in me is excited to see her turn as Joan Jett in The Runaways and I think it’s fair to say we’re all dying to see Vincenzo Natali’s hotly anticipated Splice (trailer).
In the Midnight section, Adam Green's Frozen is sounding mighty find,...

Sundance released their slate for 2010. It includes:43 documentaries on the Middle East12 films about friends who 'discover' something33 movies about people you've never heard about1 comedyHopefully the lineup this year is strong but it doesn't look that way compared to last year. Last year we had Push (Precious), that Lil Wayne documentary that never went anywhere, Mystery Team which might make my top ten, Moon, Mike Tyson documentary, Cold Souls. Just so much last January that was excellent. I hope I don't go out therer and freeze my tail off just to see...I don't know, a documentary about a former Pakistani prime minister or something silly like that. Here's the lineup so far: Premieres To showcase the diversity to contemporary independent cinema, the Sundance Film Festival Premieres section offers the latest work from American and international directors as well as world premieres of highly anticipated films. The Sundance Film Festival's competition lineup for 2010, announced Wednesday, might demand that audiences wear their serious caps. But the out-of-competition selections allow programmers and viewers to cut loose a little.
The 53 films that populate this year's Premieres, Next, Spotlight, Park City at Midnight and New Frontier sections run the gamut from the cosmically experimental to the star-studded and silly. There is indeed something for everyone at this year's event, which runs Jan. 21-31 in Park City, Salt Lake City, Ogden and Sundance, Utah.
As usual, Premieres collects work involving the industry's higher-profile talent, none more so than John Wells' feature directorial debut, "The Company Men," which stars Ben Affleck, Kevin Costner, Maria Bello, Tommy Lee Jones and Chris Cooper. Mexican actor Diego Luna's directorial debut, "Abel," will screen, as will Philip Seymour Hoffman's "Jack Goes Boating."
Michael Winterbottom has the rare distinction of having two films in...
