In the run-up to its Canneseries world premiere, Movistar Plus+ has shared in exclusivity with Variety the international trailer to “The Left Handed Son” (“El hijo zurdo”), the directorial debut of Rafael Cobos, writer of Alberto Rodríguez international hit “Marshland” banner TV series “The Plague.”
Cobos also wrote Rodriguez’s memorable episode in “Offworld,” a market screening at this year’s MipTV.
Movistar Plus+, which produces with José Antonio Félez’s Atipica Films, its partner on “The Plague” and “Prison 1977,” has also announced the release date for “The Left-Handed Son,” whose episodes will all be made available on Movistar Plus+, Spain’s biggest SVOD/pay TV platform, on April 27.

New features from Palestinian filmmaker Muayad Alayan and German director Leonie Krippendorff are among those to be presented at the 20th Berliane Co-production Market (February 18 to 22), the first in-person edition since 2020.
The market will provide the opportunity for 33 projects from 26 countries to secure financing and get fired up as international co-productions in the next few years, with sales agents, broadcasters, funding bodies, streaming platforms, film distributors and other financing partners in attendance.
For the official project selection, 17 fiction feature projects with budgets between €600,000 and €5m and chosen from among 302 submissions will take part.

Raindance Film Festival, Britain’s largest independent film festival, will return to cinemas this year, reimagined and restructured with a host of new partners and new films. Running Oct. 27 – Nov. 6, this year’s in-person event will partner with several cinemas across London and offer online screenings in the U.K., facilitated by Curzon Home Cinema.

By uniting forces, the two co-production platforms of the Holland Film Market and Rotterdam Film Festival’s (Iffr) CineMart have created a new space in which the selected projects can get stronger film industry exposure and support.
The participant projects’ representatives receive advice from film professionals through a series of individual meetings with special attention paid to their festival, sales and marketing strategies. From the first BoostNL program, four films entered the Iffr 2018 program.
The interest now lies in watching BoostNL films as they progress through the international film circuit:

Lars von Trier’s The House That Jack Built will open event.
Cph Pix’s 10th edition will open with Lars von Trier in the house to present The House That Jack Built and will close with Alfonso Cuaron’s Roma: it will mark the Netflix project’s only planned theatrical screening in Denmark.
The 10th edition of the festival runs Sept 27 to Oct 10, presenting 191 features including 19 new Danish films. The Buster schools and family programme will show 44 of those features, such as I Kill Giants and The Breadwinner.

Jan Naszewski’s Warsaw-based sales outfit New Europe Film Sales has announced multiple sales for Paweł Maślona’s black comedy “Panic Attack,” which had its international premiere this week in Karlovy Vary Film Festival’s main competition.
The film, which was a box-office hit in Poland this year, has been sold to Greece (Neo), Lithuania (Kino Pavasaris), Iceland (Bio Paradis), and Central and Eastern Europe (HBO Central Europe). Further deals, including U.K., are under negotiation. The film is also attracting interest from producers looking to remake it for their local markets, according to the sales agency.

Brazilian writer/director Gustavo Pizzi and writer/actor Karine Teles were a husband and wife team when they began working on their warm-hearted study of family life, Loveling. They split up during the making of the film, which stars Teles – perhaps best known to British audiences from The Second Mother – as a mum of a family trying to come to terms with the fact their eldest son (Konstantinos Sarris) is about to move to Germany while also trying to keep their heads above water financially.
When I catch up with them in Sundance Film Festival, it’s obvious that, marriage or not, theirs is an enduring friendship and working partnership that is unlikely to stop any time soon.
As Pizzi puts it: “We raised our kids together and we have equally shared custody. We’re still friends and we work well together.

Danish box office hit Giant Pear opens Berlinale’s Generation Kplus section.
Digital and theatrical distributor Condor Entertainment has acquired Danish animation The Incredible Story Of The Giant Pear, the opening film of the Berlinale’s Generation Kplus competition, from LevelK.
Condor has also picked up Lukas Feigelfeld’s gothic horror tale Hagazussa from Raven Banner, ahead of its appearance in Berlin Critics’ Week.
The Paris-based company, which was launched in 2010, runs two separate slates, one aimed at films for theatrical release, the other focused on direct-to-digital titles, and handles 25 to 30 titles a year.
It is planning to release The Incredible Story Of The Giant Pear on 200 screens on April 25 in France to coincide with the spring school holiday. Hagazussa will be released by its Condor’s digital arm, also in the spring.

One of the more notable aspects of this year’s Sundance Film Festival is the presence of two features from Brazil, Gustavo Pizzi’s “Loveling” and Aly Muritiba‘s “Rust.” It’s great to see more talent coming out of Brazil and making its way through the festival circuit, but unfortunately, this one fails to impress.
Premiering as a part of the World Cinema Dramatic Competition category, Muritiba’s “Rust” is a cautionary tale of teen trauma in the social media age.

Director Gustavo Pizzi wastes no time opening up the intimate and economical “Loveling” to its audience. The film is not alienating; it does not obfuscate its intentions. Pizzi knew what he wanted to make, and what he has made is a touching yarn about the pangs of familial maturation. The 2011 SXSW Film Festival will feature the North American premiere of Marie Losier‘s The Ballad of Genesis and Lady Jaye, a much-anticipated documentary that chronicles the love story of industrial music pioneer Genesis P-Orridge and his late wife Lady Jaye. Screening times have not been released yet, but the festival runs this year on March 11-19 at its regular home of Austin, Texas.
Genesis and Lady Jaye had a unique relationship in which, in addition to getting married, they attempted to meld together as a single pandrogynous entity known as Breyer P-Orridge. (The “Breyer” portion of the name coming from Jaye’s maiden name.) The couple both underwent plastic surgery and hormone therapy together, as well as starting to cross-dress and adopt perfectly identical mannerisms and behaviors.
Unfortunately, Jaye passed away in 2007, although Genesis continues to live his life as Breyer P-Orridge.

‘Tapping into the cultural zeitgeist,’ at SXSW 2011
Austin, Texas – The SXSW 2011 Feature Film Lineup was unveiled Wednesday afternoon. The festival lineup will consist of 130 features, in nine full days of programming, promising to deliver a film-going experience unlike previous years.
With a reputation for taking chances on relatively unknown filmmakers, the SXSW panel of judges carefully picked 130 films from 1,792 feature-length film submissions, (1,323 U.S. and 469 international). The program consists of 60 World Premieres, 12 North American Premieres and 16 U.S. Premieres.
The main competition categories return with eight Narrative Features, and eight Documentary Features, both competing for their respective Grand Jury Prize. New for films in competition this year, are awards for screenplay, editing, cinematography, music, and acting.
(The Midnighters and SXFantastic feature sections, along with the short film program, will be announced next week.)

Austin, Texas – The SXSW 2011 Feature Film Lineup was unveiled Wednesday afternoon. The festival lineup will consist of 130 features, in nine full days of programming, promising to deliver a film-going experience unlike previous years.
With a reputation for taking chances on relatively unknown filmmakers, the SXSW panel of judges carefully picked 130 films from 1,792 feature-length film submissions, (1,323 U.S. and 469 international). The program consists of 60 World Premieres, 12 North American Premieres and 16 U.S. Premieres.
The main competition categories return with eight Narrative Features, and eight Documentary Features, both competing for their respective Grand Jury Prize. New for films in competition this year, are awards for screenplay, editing, cinematography, music, and acting.
(The Midnighters and SXFantastic feature sections, along with the short film program, will be announced next week.)

Titles you should be aware of – all of which we’ve previously profiled on Shadow And Act – include, Victoria Mahoney’s feature film debut, Yelling To The Sky (which will actually make its world debut at the Berlin Film Festival later this month); plus Blacktino, the first feature film from writer/director Aaron Burns, a self-described “blacktino nerd from Austin, Texas,” who got his start at Robert Rodriguez’s Troublemaker Studios doing visual effects; Benda Bilili, a documentary about a band of homeless, disabled Congolese; and last, but not least, Being Elmo: A Puppeteer’s Journey, a documentary about the black man that happens to be the man behind the puppet (which also played at Sundance).
