New York -- The rafters are shaking downtown at the Public Theater, where the dynamic new hip-hop musical, "Venice," is rocking the Anspacher Theater. It's a potent, dystopian mashup of rap music, Shakespeare's "Othello," sibling rivalry and political intrigue. And there's a sweet love story, too.
Intricate vocal harmonies infuse the pulsating anthems and ballads performed by a youthful, energetic cast, and the staging is acrobatic and effective, in the irresistible Public Lab production that opened Thursday night. Director Eric Rosen co-created the book and co-wrote the lyrics with Matt Sax, who wrote the music.
The complex, often-operatic score, which includes additional music by Curtis Moore, delineates character and creates a moody atmosphere while compellingly advancing the story. Chase Brock's versatile choreography creates a feverish sense of foot-stomping rebellion, as well as somber, elegiac moments.

It has been a busy year for Greene on the romantic front - she has dated pop star Joe Jonas and was briefly linked to Kings of Leon rocker Jared Followill.
The Twilight beauty was first linked to Carney in October, shortly after the Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark actor split from his co-star Jennifer Damiano.
And the new lovers celebrated the start of their first holiday season together by appearing at the Rockefeller Center Tree Lighting event to watch performances by singers Michael Buble, Tony Bennett, Cee-Lo Green and Neil Diamond.

True love means holding hands on the subway, kids. "Twilight" star Ashley Greene is allegedly dating "Spider-Man" -- no, not Andrew Garfield. We're talking about Reeve Carney, star of Broadway's "Spider-Man, Turn Off the Dark."
Carney recently dated his co-star Jennifer Damiano, but we're guessing that's over, because an intrepid reporter with a camera phone snapped pics of Carney and Greene getting cozy in a subway car. LaineyGossip reports that she was also photographed backstage with Carney's entire family at a show in March.
Clearly, Carney is on his way up. He's starring as Jeff Buckley in an upcoming biopic -- with Buckley's mother's approval.

HollywoodNews.com: Broadway’s $70 million “Spider Man: Turn off the Dark” actually started performances in mid November 2010, if you recall. Coming up on the year anniversary, two leads from the show are being re-cast. Presumably, Jennifer Damiano and TV Carpio, respectively Mary Jane and Arachne, are leaving since a casting call has gone out for their replacements. Additionally, a casting call went out for a new Peter Parker to understudy the role while Reeve Carney goes off to shoot a biopic about late singer songwriter Jeff Buckley. Sources say the new Mary Jane and Arachne should have their first performances in mid November.
That’s around the same time Carney will exit for 8 weeks. “Spider Man,” like most of Broadway, is having a tough fall at the box office. After its wild winter and spring, the troubled musical finally opened on June 14th. Between kids being out of school and mordbid curiosity,...

"Spider-Man Turn Off the Dark" is not as awful as one is led to believe. It's not awful at all.
It's just not good.
"Spider-Man" is a spectacle, and visually arresting. And therein is the $75 million question: Is it worthy of Broadway if the musical has no show-stoppers, not one great song despite Bono and The Edge, such insipid dancing it's forgotten immediately and a script that neither has dramatic tension nor funny lines?
Sadly, the answer is yes. It's worth it if people are willing to pay for it. This could have a long run judging by the school buses lining up on 42nd Street on the show's official third night Thursday (June 16). Given the name recognition, the unending hype and that everyone knows Spider-Man, it's a fair bet this could go indefinitely.
The show begins with incredible energy, fueled by school kids thrilled to be at The Foxwoods Theatre on a Thursday night.

We're as surprised as anyone that the folks behind have been able to transform their epically troubled musical into a satisfying piece of Broadway entertainment. In January, as news of the show's creative and safety issues turned the then $65 million production into one of the Great White Way's most spectacular disasters, we admitted that while there were some enjoyable aspects, you were better off popping in a DVD of a Tobey Maguire "Spider-Man" flick than trekking to New York to see the musical.
What a difference a few months — and a new creative team — makes. Out went Julie Taymor, in came writers like comics vet Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, and the results are just what the web-slinging wonderboy needed. We're not the only ones who feel that way.
