Writers from “The Tonight Show” virtually joined Variety’s Marc Malkin to discuss working from home, ideas that didn’t make it to air and how Tuesday’s hilarious “Tiger King” sketch came to be.
Presented by the Writers Guild Foundation, the panel consisted of “Tonight Show” head writer Rebecca Drysdale along with Gerard Bradford and Jeremy Bronson, who are both writers and producers. Although social distancing guidelines have turned their writer’s room into a “writer’s Zoom,” all three have leaned in to the reality of quarantine to produce some of Fallon’s funniest sketches yet.
Drysdale was named head writer only a month ago, meaning that she has not actually been in the official writer’s room yet. Despite this, Drysdale said she has enjoyed the challenge the quarantine has presented the “Tonight Show” team.

Netflix has opted not to renew for a second season All About the Washingtons, its multi-camera comedy series starring Joseph “Rev Run” Simmons & Justine Simmons. The decision comes two months after the release of the series’ 10-episode first season, which didn’t seem to get a lot of traction.
Created by Jeremy Bronson (The Mayor), All About The Washingtons had a twisty road to the screen. The pitch originally landed at ABC in fall 2016 with a put pilot commitment. It did not get a pilot order, but, believing in the concept and the talent, producing companies Amblin TV and ABC Studios pulled together resources and used the penalty money to finance a pilot presentation. The presentation was well received by ABC brass but the broadcast network only picked up three new comedy series that year, including Bronson’s The Mayor, and got out of the multi-camera comedy business all together.

ABC has officially pulled the plug on its once-promising new comedy series The Mayor. The series was unofficially canceled early this year when it was scheduled to return from hiatus, but the network pulled the remaining four episodes, airing Modern Family reruns in its Tuesday 9:30 Pm slot instead.
The Mayor was chosen as the only new ABC comedy series to launch in the fall and premiered to strong reviews, backed by a big marketing campaign and featuring a charismatic young star in Brandon Micheal Hall. But it struggled to establish a foothold Tuesday. Its fall finale drew 2.8 million viewers and a 0.8 in adults 18-49 (Live+Same Day).
The Mayor, from ABC Studios, was created by Jeremy Bronson. It centered on Courtney Rose (Hall), a hip-hop artist who runs for a mayor as a publicity stunt but scores a surprise win. Lea Michele, Bernard David Jones, Marcel Spears, Yvette Nicole Brown and David Spade co-starred.

New this year on ABC, The Mayor TV show centers on a musician who stages a political campaign to boost his career and ends up winning his election in an upset. Will The Mayor be cancelled or renewed for season two? Stay tuned. ‘The Orville,’ ‘Young Sheldon’ and Which New Shows You Should Cut or Keep Watching — Updated Reviews
As fall transitions into winter, TV seasons change with the weather. It feels like just yesterday, the internet was abuzz with anticipation for a slew of new fall shows. “The Orville,” “Young Sheldon,” “The Good Doctor,” and more are all shows that feel like they just started, and in a way, they did; September wasn’t that long ago. But after seeing anywhere from seven to 12 total episodes of each series, opinions change and decisions have to be made.
Winter is coming: More new shows are on the way, and keeping up with everything isn’t an option. So it’s time to make cuts, starting with the new broadcast series that have aired enough episodes to be assessed properly. We know what they are now. Here’s what we think.

[Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers from “The Mindy Project” series finale, “It Had to Be You.”]
“The Mindy Project” came to an end on Tuesday with its series finale, and every major character finds love or fulfillment in some form. Everything comes full circle with Dr. Mindy Lahiri (creator and star Mindy Kaling) fleeing from a wedding on a bicycle while wearing a sequined dress. But what a difference six seasons and countless boyfriends make. In the pilot, Mindy’s bike escape is sparked by going on a drunken rant at her ex’s wedding. In the finale, she’s peddling away from her good friend’s wedding into the arms of the man she loves.
Over the course of five years and two networks, Kaling refined her romantic comedy style, which ranged from irreverent and goofy to idealistic and contemplative. It hasn’t always been the most consistent, though, and season-to-season has ranged wildly in tone and execution. This was partially due to the network switch,...

Last week, the situation for The Mayor TV show on ABC was dire enough that co-star Yvette Nicole Brown took to social media to rally/warn the fans that The Mayor was in danger of being cancelled. Now, instead of issuing a full season order, the Alphabet Network has ordered three additional scripts for season one of the sitcom. ‘The Mayor’ Review: ‘Hamilton’ Alum’s Trump-Adjacent Political Sitcom Gets Off to an Inspiring Start
“Veep” is the best comedy on television, as attested by the 2017 Emmys and confirmed by IndieWire’s substantial critical authority, and its quickly approaching series finale will mark a great loss to television. The way in which David Mandel and Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ sword-swinging satirical attack on our corrupt national leaders stabs and skewers every last power-hungry politician is a service of the utmost importance when anger is running high.
But in addition to a series that satisfies American bloodlust for the blowhards on Capital Hill, those same viewers need to believe in politicians. We need a show to encourage that belief, and the current climate — which can be described as tumultuous at best — only emphasizes said point.
Enter ABC’s “The Mayor,” a comedy built around inspiring characters who not only serve as the inverse to HBO’s emotionally deadened D.C. politicos, but who remind us there is still good in this world,...

“The Mindy Project” is the type of working title a network assigns a show until a final title has been cleared. It’s supposed to be temporary. But in this case, the name stuck — presaging a pattern of breaking rules and subverting expectations that the show has followed throughout its run.
As it enters its sixth season, “The Mindy Project” title has taken on a new meaning. Heroine Mindy Lahiri (Mindy Kaling) has been working on the project that is herself and her romantic notions all along. What happens when someone totally unqualified gets elected to office, thanks to his ability to connect with certain audiences? That’s the premise of ABC’s “The Mayor,” about the rise of Courtney Rose (Brandon Michael Hall), a 28-year-old aspiring rapper who runs for mayor to boost his music career — and becomes the reluctant leader of his small town as a result.

However, Courtney is a good guy who is genuinely interested in helping his community, something star Yvette Nicole Brown hopes will be inspirational for everyone. “I think that we have the ability on this show to show what happens when someone gets elected who doesn’t know what they’re doing — but they have a heart for people and what that looks like,” Brown said. “And I hope that it becomes aspirational for,...

ABC has picked up four new series from its sister ABC Studios, including a new drama from Shonda Rhimes’ company, a drama about saving the world (starring Jason Ritter), a series about refugees… from America, and comedy that sounds like it might take a few cues from the recently installed White House inhabitant.
In “The Mayor,” Brandon Micheal Hall plays an aspiring young rapper, Courtney Rose, who decides – as a publicity stunt – to run for mayor. He did it solely to generate buzz and become rich and famous. Instead, he is actually elected mayor, an outcome he never predicted. Now he must lean on his mother (Yvette Nicole Brown) and friends, including Valentina (Lea Michele) to become the mayor he didn’t think he wanted to be.
Sound a bit Trumpy?
The series also stars Bernard David Jones and Marcel Spears. Executive producers include Daveed Diggs (Broadway’s “Hamilton”), writer Jeremy Bronson (“Speechless,...

Negotiations between the nurses and doctors haven’t been going well on The Mindy Project but that doesn’t affect all of the friendships between the groups. Literally no one takes the strike to heart more than Jeremy. He’s so stressed out about the hospital negotiation committee meeting with the nurses that he possibly suffers a heart attack. Jody was there when he collapsed, and later Mindy jokingly said his heart exploded, but I wouldn’t be laughing even if his chest pain was attributed to his “English frailty.” During the strike Mindy cried wolf one too many time with these house calls

“The Mindy Project” returns with its fifth season on Hulu ready to set up romantic comedy tropes and tear them down again in adorable fashion.
First on the show’s agenda is tackling the love triangle — what Mindy refers to as “the sexiest of shapes” — that ended with a cliffhanger last season. Mindy (Mindy Kaling) had just had a hot hookup with her ex, Danny (Chris Messina), while getting stuck in an elevator. Despite their obvious chemistry and history, he’s hidden the fact that he’s about to marry another woman. (Oops.) Meanwhile, Mindy’s colleague Jody decided to make a grand gesture to prove his affection for her and bought her an adjoining apartment. But does real estate translate into real love?
“The three characters in this love triangle are incredibly flawed,” Kaling told IndieWire during a set visit. “They’ve done hugely wrong, immoral things time and time and time again.

Hulu released the mid-season finale of "The Mindy Project" yesterday, and I have thoughts on that episode and season 4 to date coming up just as soon as I sign up for this great new dating website called Ashley Madison... Once upon a time, "The Mindy Project" was going to be called "It's Messy." While that title lacked either part of Mindy Kaling's name in it, and would have invited some easy jokes if critics hadn't liked it, it would have captured not only the messiness of Mindy Lahiri's life, but the intrinsic messiness of the show itself. The series has tried lots of different things in terms of characters and tone, and though the cast more or less settled down midway through the Fox run, there are still pieces that feel mismatched, and characters like Jeremy who have stuck around even though nobody seems to know what to do with him anymore(*). (*) In hindsight,...
