We’ll be meeting the elusive Wright sibling Lawrence (Matthew Wilkas) in So Help Me Todd‘s Thanksgiving episode, but there’s even juicier news: The CBS dramedy will soon introduce us to the other character we’ve been dying to meet since the show’s September debut: Veronica! Eliza Coupe has been cast as the private eye/mentor who seduced and deceived Todd (Skylar Astin) two years ago, making him believe that they were equal partners in their detective agency when she was really setting him up to be the fall guy for her illegal wiretapping and forgery. Todd’s mother, law partner Margaret Wright (Marcia Gay Harden), kept him out of jail but he was stripped of his P.I. license. In the series opener, Margaret hired him as an investigator at her firm and he’s been working on her cases — whether he’s actually assigned to or not — ever since.

Bonding is one of those programmes that you discover while deep-scrolling through the Netflix archives but turns out to be an incredible show that makes your wonder why is no one talking about it? I originally reviewed the first season of this show almost two years ago before joining the Nerdly team and the reason I posted my thoughts was to raise awareness of the show… now I’m not saying that it was just me that made a difference but it became popular enough to warrant a second season – which I was thrilled about!
For those of you who are not familiar with Bonding, the series follows the lives Tiff and Pete who fall into becoming a professional dominatrix duo. These two have a very complicated friendship as, despite Pete now identifying as a gay man, at one point they were in a very serious relationship. The two fight...

Not the most imaginative of titles but that hasn’t stopped me watching many a movie and in particular a horror movie… So I was hoping Island Zero: Sea No Evil would be better than its title suggests.
Unsurprisingly Island Zero is set on a remote island. One in which a solitary ferry is the only route on and off of it. So when that ferry fails to turn up for several days in a row, the residents start to worry. And they soon worry even more when they realise something is killing them off.
Despite an opening scene that involves death and blood, this is much more of a slow burn of a horror movie.

The original production of Little Shop of Horrors first debuted Off-Off-Broadway in 1982 and then suddenly Seymour and company made their way to the Orpheum Theater for an Off-Broadway production that ran for five years. A hybrid of sci-fi and comedy, the musical about a carnivorous plant looking to take over the world became a cult classic spawning numerous productions and had a film adaptation starring Rick Moranis and Ellen Greene in 1986. After almost four decades, it has still retained its cult status with its R&b flair and irreverent, yet earnest lyrics and the new production at the Pasadena Playhouse continues the tradition with a fresh, inclusive iteration of the musical favorite.
The genre-driven musical comedy with music by Alan Menken and book and lyrics by the late, great Howard Ashman still feeds the soul with camp, humor, heart and its subversive charm. The Pasadena Playhouse production may just be a cast of eight,...

On American Horror Story, you can pretty much count on seeing several of the same actors returning to the Ryan Murphy horror anthology for multiple seasons, playing new characters each time. Every now and then, though, newbies join the Ahs universe, and the upcoming ninth season, American Horror Story: 1984, is no exception. One of the fresh faces in the cast is actually someone you'll probably recognize: Olympic skier Gus Kenworthy, making his acting debut.
Kenworthy's character - still unnamed - will be the boyfriend of series staple Emma Roberts's newest character. Director Josh Gerritsen’s Island Zero wears its influences proudly on its sleeves, and they become readily apparent as soon as you read the synopsis. The story of an isolated fishing community being attacked by Something Horrible that comes out of the water immediately reminds one of The Fog; the synth score, the poster, and even the title card reinforce the 80s movie vibe it’s going for. And if you’re going to be inspired by someone, who better than John Carpenter? As we first meet the main characters in this small island off the coast of Maine – a Hooper-like marine biologist (Adam Wade McLaughlin), a mysterious, douchey author (Matthew Wilkas), and the pragmatic no-nonsense doctor with a past (Laila...

"Oooooh, end of the world!" Freestyle Digital Media has released a short, new official trailer, running only 30-seconds, for a dark comedy, horror thriller titled Island Zero, from director Josh Gerritsen and writer Tess Gerritsen ("Rizzoli & Isles"). The premise for this film sounds pretty cool, I just hope it's better than it looks. A fishing community on a remote Maine island finds itself suddenly cut off from the rest of the world after the ferry stops coming. When people start to vanish, the terrified survivors realize that someone - or something - is hunting them. Island Zero stars Laila Robins, Adam Wade McLaughlin, Teri Reeves, and Matthew Wilkas. But it’s not that unusual, really, Kenworthy tells People.
“It sounds bizarre, because I’ve said it to people and they were like, ‘I didn’t know people did that,’ ” Kenworthy, 26, says in Pyeongchang, South Korea, not long after he competed in the 2018 Winter Olympics.

It’s the friendship that launched a thousand retweets … and some mistaken assumptions about romance.
Skier Gus Kenworthy and figure skater Adam Rippon have stirred social media buzz throughout the 2018 Winter Olympics, not just for being the only two openly gay men on Team USA but also because they’ve been more than willing to document their time together on Instagram and Twitter.
Kenworthy, 26, sat down with People this week in Pyeongchang, South Korea, not long after a disappointing showing in the men’s slopestyle event, where he won an Olympic silver medal four years ago.

Four years ago, American freeskier Gus Kenworthy earned a silver medal in the men’s slopestyle event at the 2014 Winter Games — though that achievement was tangled up with a secret he had long been keeping: He was gay.
On Sunday, and more than two years after coming out in ESPN the Magazine, Kenworthy returned to the snow to defend his Olympic medal in Pyeongchang, South Korea.
This time he was one of two openly gay athletes competing for Team USA, along with figure skater Adam Rippon. (He was also skiing with a broken thumb and a bruised hip.)

With fewer than 100 days until the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea, U.S. freestyle skier Gus Kenworthy has become one of the most prominent faces of the Games. And it should come as no surprise that the athlete has seen his profile rise in the four years since he took home a silver medal at the 2014 Sochi Games, where he also became famous for rescuing four pups and their mother (aka the Sochi Strays) and earned the nickname “Gus Swoon-worthy.”
But most notably, a few months after returning home from Russia, Kenworthy publicly came out as gay, in an October 2015 interview with Espn the Magazine. He quickly became recognized and celebrated as one of only a few out American male athletes, joining the ranks of soccer player Robbie Rogers, NBA pro Jason Collins, and NFL newbie Michael Sam, who all came out just a couple of years prior.

TV and Bill Lawrence’s Doozer Prods. The bromantic comedy centers on Danny (Chris D’Elia) and Justin (Brent Morin) — two very different guys who are bonded by their common inability to attract women. Park will play Nicki, the eternally optimistic young waitress who is a recent transplant to Detroit from a small town in the Upper Peninsula. She’s treated like a little sister by all the regulars at Justin’s bar, but Justin secretly has feelings for her. The role has been vacant since originally cast Aly Michalka exited before the taping of the pilot. David Fynn has landed a regular role on NBC’s midseason comedy Undateable, from executive producer Bill Lawrence and Warner Bros TV. The bromantic comedy centers on Danny (Chris D’Elia) and Justin (Brent Morin) — two very different guys who are bonded by their common inability to attract women. Flynn, repped by Luber Roklin, Gersh and Shepherd Management in the UK, will play Brett, Justin’s gay and prohibitively picky undateable friend who always finds something wrong with a guy. He replaces Matthew Wilkas, who plated the role in the pilot. This is one of two re-castings on Undateable after it was picked up to series. The series also is looking for an actress to replace Briga Heelan, who co-starred in the pilot as a guest star as she had already been cast as the female lead in the TBS pilot Ground Floor, which went to series. A pair of new NBC comedies are in recasting mode, with a well-known actress looking to take over one of the vacated parts.
The network wants Jenna Elfman -- who starred on NBC's "1600 Penn" this season -- to take a lead role in "The Family Guide," according to TVLine. She would replace Parker Posey, who left the show after filming the pilot. NBC will also recast two parts on "Undateable," which like "The Family Guide" is set for a midseason debut.
"The Family Guide" is about a boy (Eli Baker) and his relationship with recently divorced parents (J.K. Simmons plays his father), and how the family ultimately becomes closer after the divorce. DJ Nash, who previously worked with Elfman on "Accidentally on Purpose," created the show.
"Undateable" is going through its second recasting of the lead female role. Briga Heelan ("Cougar Town") replaced Aly Michalka during the pilot process.

New York — The slow, lingering demise of "Smash" has felt more like a punch to the gut to the folks on Broadway.
The TV series about the making of a big stage musical came with a flurry of attention and some big names: Steven Spielberg, Debra Messing and Anjelica Huston. It was going to be a valentine to Broadway.
Sometimes, though, love letters get sent back.
After a first season with a healthy-sized audience averaging 7.7 million viewers, it returned this year to such dismal ratings it was banished to Saturday night. It won't be back for a third season.
But while TV was finally focusing on Broadway, plenty of stage veterans jumped to TV during the two-year run of "Smash." Some flamed out, some are holding on and some still hope:
_ Three-time Tony winner Sutton Foster's show about ballerinas, "Bunheads," has been picked up for a second season on ABC Family.

Update 2:15 p.m. Et: NBC has also ordered a spinoff of its freshman series "Chicago Fire" called "Chicago P.D." The new show will focus on uniformed officers and detectives in a Chicago precinct and star Jon Seda and Jason Beghe, both of whom have appeared in several "Chicago Fire" episodes this season.
NBC is not done picking up new series for next season. The network has added another drama and comedy to the six new shows it had previously ordered.
The latest drama pickup is "Ironside," a remake of the 1960s-70s series about a detective who is paralyzed on the job but continues working. It stars Blair Underwood ("The Event," "In Treatment") in the title role. (Raymond Burr starred in the original.)
The remake also stars Brent Sexton ("The Killing"), Spencer Grammer ("Greek"), Kenneth Choi ("Sons of Anarchy") and Neal Bledsoe ("Smash"). Michael Caleo ("Rescue Me," "The Sopranos") is the creator.

This week on DVD/Blu-ray: A comedy about a gay guy and his best girl friend who decide to have a baby (cough, a "Gayby"); the complete first season of Lena Dunham's extremely successful foray into television; a demented and totally fun forgotten gem from the '80s; Christopher Nolan's black-and-white debut, remastered for the first time on Blu-ray; and a mostly wordless trio of films with music by composer Philip Glass #1. "Gayby" Criticwire Page A raucous hit on the festival circuit (and recent nominee at the upcoming Spirit Awards) "Gayby" is the long form version of Jonathan Lisecki's award-winning short of the same name about two thirty-something friends from college, Matt (Matthew Wilkas) and Jenn (the hilarious Jenn Harris,) who decide they want to bring a baby into the world the old-fashioned way. The couple continues to navigate the daunting New York dating scene throughout their ups and downs of attempting.

Gayby
Directed by Jonathan Lisecki
United States, 2012
Philadelphia Film Festival
Jenn (Jenn Harris) and Matt (Matthew Wilkas) are 30-something friends from college. He’s gay, she’s straight. He’s just out of a long relationship, she’s had zero luck in her love life. Both feel the call of commitment, so they decide to have a baby through traditionally heterosexual means.
Every description for Gayby includes the phrase “the old fashioned way” in some iteration. While the awkward sex – especially the first time – between Jenn and Matt is truly hilarious, the film also has flashes of poignancy with its mostly tongue-in-cheek look at modern relationships.
Still, Gayby can be frustrating. There’s one gratifying sigh of relief when a sitcom-ish double date mistaken identity setup is easily avoided and yields an ultimately stronger, post-date makeout scene.
But then fewer than 20 minutes later Jenn irrationally decides to drop incredibly bad...

It’s the stuff of sitcom gold: girl and guy want baby, but they don’t want each other. Gayby is strikingly similar to a Will and Grace plotline that never materialized, following a pair of best friends aware that their time for parenting might soon pass them by. Jenn (Jenn Harris) is thankfully not as neurotic as Grace, but she is equally self-deprecating. She suffers under her overbearing boss at work and has no luck choosing male partners. Her best friend, Matt (Matthew Wilkas) is a sweet comic book nerd who also has no luck finding a male partner after an...

Gayby might be the first feature from writer/director Jonathan Lisecki, but its ace comic timing and deft depiction of physical humor suggest a seasoned comedic maestro. Expanded from a short that Lisecki shopped around the festival circuit in 2010 (it debuted at Slamdance and went on to hit more than 100 venues), the film is easily one of the year’s funniest, much thanks to its maker’s classic instincts for drumming up laughs. A veteran of independent theater, Lisecki couples a sharp, knowing wit with a mature sense of benevolence, yielding a well-rounded comedy for a demographic that desperately needs it.

At first glance, the new film Gayby sounds like a remake of the Madonna film The Next Best Thing. Both films are about two best friends—a straight woman and a gay man—who have a baby together after giving up on finding serious relationships. But where The Next Best Thing delves into the melodrama that comes later in life as they raise the child together, Jonathan Lisecki's Gayby focuses on the comedic foibles that result from these two friends trying to procreate together “the old-fashioned way.”
