Update: The Senate passed a bill to protect same-sex and interracial marriage rights at the federal level, drawing bipartisan support for legislation likely to clear Congress and be signed by President Joe Biden.
The Supreme Court advanced marriage equality in several landmark decisions over the past 55 years, but the court’s decision in June to reverse Roe vs. Wade has raised fears that other precedents may also be in jeopardy.
“The first people I will call when this bill passes is my daughter and her wife,” Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said on the floor of the Senate before the final vote. After members clapped when the final roll call was announced, Schumer said, “What a great day.”
The bill, the Respect for Marriage Act, cleared the Senate 61-36, with Democrats joined by 12 Republicans in support. The GOP members included Roy Blunt of Missouri, Richard Burr of North Carolina, Shelley Moore Capito of West Virginia,...

Bernie Sanders is tired of Republicans complaining about legislation that helps working people while they support bills that give billionaires tax breaks.
Appearing on ABC’s This Week days after President Joe Biden announced up to 20,000 in student loan forgiveness for borrowers, Sanders said, “I know it is shocking to some Republicans that the government actually on occasion does something to benefit working families and low-income people. I don’t hear any of these Republicans squawking when we give massive tax breaks to billionaires.”

State Attorney General Eric Schmitt won Missouri’s Republican primary for Senate, besting a roster of rivals that included embattled former Gov. Eric Greitens and Rep. Vicky Hartzler
The hotly contested race to replace retiring Republican Roy Blunt (R-Mo.) in Washington, D.C., unfolded without Donald Trump backing any particular candidate. Instead, the former president on Monday simply endorsed “Eric,” ensuring he could take credit regardless of whether Schmitt or Greitens prevailed.
Schmitt won the race by netting nearly 46 of the votes with over 95 of precincts reported.

Democratic Senate candidate Lucas Kunce isn’t running against Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Mo.). I was nevertheless curious: Had he seen the news about Hawley’s just-announced forthcoming book, Manhood: The Masculine Virtues America Needs?
Kunce gives a hearty snicker. “This is what we’re running against,” he says. “We’re running against the biggest fakers the world has ever seen.”
The book promises to call on “American men to stand up and embrace their God-given responsibility as husbands, fathers, and citizens.” He’ll draw upon Greek philosophers, Jesus, and Theodore Roosevelt...

The Jan. 6 committee has, for the past few weeks, been reminding Americans about the horrifying “war scene” that unfolded during the attack on the Capitol. Some conservatives are ignoring the panel’s findings and dismissing the hearings as a distraction. Others are doubling down on political violence. Eric Greitens, a scandal-ridden Republican running for Senate in Missouri, released an ad on Monday advocating for “hunting” RINOs, or Republicans In Name Only, a term for conservatives who haven’t veered far enough to the right.
The ad is not subtle. It isn’t even metaphorical.

Republican and Democratic Senators have signed onto a tentative agreement for gun reform legislation in the wake of the shooting at a Uvalde, Texas, elementary school.
The proposed deal for bipartisan reform, a group of senators announced Sunday, includes enhanced background checks for buyers ages 18-21 as well as funding for mental health treatment and school security. The deal is a result of negotiations between Sens. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) and John Cornyn (R-Texas). Ten Republican senators — the number Democrats would need to overcome a filibuster — have signed on.

Rep. Billy Long (R-Mo.) on Wednesday blamed mass shootings on the Supreme Court’s 1973 decision Roe v. Wade, which legalized abortion.
“When I was growing up in Springfield, you had one or two murders a year,” he said on Columbia, Missouri’s 93.9 The Eagle. “Now, we have two, three, four a week. So, something has happened to our society. I go back to abortion — when we decided it was Ok to murder kids in their mothers’ wombs. Life has no value to a lot of these folks.”

2Nd Update, 2:05 Pm: So far at least 14 attendees of Saturday’s Gridiron Club dinner have tested positive for Covid.
In a note sent to Gridiron members, club president Thomas DeFrank wrote, “As of 4 p.m. Wednesday, we know of 14 guests at Saturday’s dinner who have tested positive for Covid. There is no way of being certain about when they first contracted Covid. But they did interact with other guests during the night and we have to be realistic and expect some more cases. Except in cases of public officials who have on their own disclosed their status, we will protect the privacy of guests who test positive.”
DeFrank said that the Gridiron will alert “anybody who was in close proximity with a positive case.” He urged those sitting across the table or on either side of the positive person to get tested.

Eric Greitens resigned as governor of Missouri in 2018 amid a wave of scandals ranging from allegations of sexual misconduct to felony charges for using a veterans charity list to raise campaign cash. Greitens seems to have figured this puts him right at home in the GOP of 2022, and he is currently in the midst of a race to secure the party’s nomination in the race for retiring Sen. Roy Blunt’s seat in Washington. Greitens, however, faces new allegations of extreme abuse. His ex-wife on Monday accused him of physically abusing their children,...

Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky, in an unusual virtual speech to members of Congress, called for a humanitarian no-fly zone to protect the country from what he called Russian terror.
“This is a terror that Europe has not seen for 80 years and we are asking for an answer to this terror from the whole world,” Zelensky said in his speech to a packed auditorium at the Capitol and carried by broadcast and cable networks. “Is this a lot to ask for— to create a no-fly zone over Ukraine, to save people? Is this too much to ask? Humanitarian no-fly zone.”
“If this is too much to ask, we offer an alternative,” he added, calling for additional aircraft to protect the country.

Update, 7:26 Pm Pt: Democrats’ efforts to pass voting rights legislation stalled again in the Senate, as they fell short in securing a filibuster rules change that would have allowed them to clear the bills with a simple majority.
The failure of the legislation was expected, after Sen. Kyrsten Sinema (D-az) and Sen. Joe Manchin (D-wv) announced their opposition to even a one-time modification of the rules. They joined all Republicans in voting against the proposal, while 46 Democrats and two independents supported it Some Republicans applauded in the chamber when Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-vt), the president pro tem presiding over the Senate, announced the results of the roll call.
“I will not give up. We will not give up,” Sen. Raphael Warnock (D-ga) tweeted after the vote.
In a statement, President Joe Biden said, “I am profoundly disappointed that the United States Senate has failed to stand up for our democracy.

Joe Biden’s nominee to fill a vacancy on the FCC, Gigi Sohn, faced a string of questions — from past tweets about Fox News to her role in the streaming service Locast — as she faced a Senate confirmation hearing on Wednesday.
While most nominees to the FCC get through with relatively little turbulence, Sohn’s longtime work as a public interest advocate often put her at odds with the broadcast and telecom industry, particularly on issues like media consolidation and net neutrality.
But some on the right, including Tucker Carlson, also have seized on some of her past tweets to claim that she would use her position to try to stifle conservative voices.
In the Senate Commerce Committee hearing, Sohn responded to queries over some of her past tweets, including one from last year in which she wrote, “For all my concerns about #Facebook, I believe that Fox News has...

As a leader in the Black Lives Matter demonstrations in St. Louis after the 2014 shooting of Michael Brown, Cori Bush was used to showing up at protests and seeing police, often fully deck out in riot gear, already waiting for them. Those memories came back to her as she watched videos of rioters, including one toting a Confederate flag, break into the U.S. Capitol on January 6th. “We knew at any moment we would be maced, pepper sprayed, tear gassed, rubber bullets would start flying,” Bush says. “But that...

Nearly a week may have passed since the violent attack on the U.S. Capitol by supporters of Donald Trump, but January 6, 2020 will go down in history as a dark day for Americans.
On Monday’s episode of The Late Show, host Stephen Colbert noted that the fatal incident on Capitol Hill, which left six dead, made him “more upset than he could ever remember.” Even more so than 9/11, he added.
“[9/11] is the most horrible day in American history, but I want to point out no Americans were cheering for the terrorists back then,” he said. “No one was making excuses for the terrorists, no one was pretending that they weren’t terrorists.”
During his opening monologue, Colbert added that upon further investigation, the violent storming on the Capitol had been thoroughly planned. In addition to Trump setting a date and place for supporters to meet, the late night host...

House Democrats, with little help from Republicans, voted to raise the amount of the coronavirus relief stimulus checks to $2,000. But, although the president says he supports an increase from the $600 already allotted in the relief bill that he finally signed into law on Sunday, the new legislation’s chances of passing the Republican-controlled Senate are not good.
Democrats brought the bill to the House floor on Monday, and it needed a two-thirds majority to pass. The legislation squeaked by because forty-four Republicans joined the Democratic majority in the 275-134 vote.

Updated 3:50 Pm: The Senate will vote Wednesday on the articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump, meaning that his almost-certain acquittal will take place after two key events: the Super Bowl and the State of the Union address.
Trump is to be interviewed by Sean Hannity on Sunday as part of Fox’s pre-game coverage, and Potus will deliver his annual State of the Union address to a joint session of Congress on Tuesday.
But there had been some concern among Democrats over the timeline for ending the impeachment trial and whether lawmakers would have the opportunity to explain their votes on the floor.
Under a deal reached by leaders of both parties, closing arguments will take place on Monday, and floor speeches will take place between Monday and Wednesday.
Previously: The Senate voted 51-49 to reject the calling of new witnesses in the impeachment trial of Donald Trump,...

The Brett Kavanaugh Supreme Court battle has turned into one of the most contentious nominations in our nation’s history. President Trump’s nominee has been accused of past sexual assaults and of being dishonest before the Senate.
Despite testimony by Dr. Christine Blasey Ford, Kavanaugh’s nomination cleared the Senate Judiciary Committee on a party-line vote on September 28th. Following an unaccountably incomplete investigation by the FBI, Kavanaugh’s nomination cleared a key procedural hurdle, setting up a final vote this weekend.

Back when Vice President Mike Pence was the governor of Indiana, the D.C.-based lobbying group America’s Public Television Stations named him a “Champion of Public Broadcasting.”
Now they’d probably like their trophy back.
Public broadcasters are preparing for the fight of their lives. Donald Trump’s proposed budget, as feared, completely eliminates funding for public broadcasting, the National Endowment for the Arts and National Endowment for Humanities. It’s a part of an unusually cruel proposal that, beyond the arts, also cuts social services like Meals on Wheels.
It’s no surprise that Trump and Republicans are gunning for public broadcasting. Conservatives have targeted the Corporation for Public Broadcasting for decades, even though its annual appropriation is around just $445 million. Its elimination would have virtually no impact on the nation’s deficit, particularly if Donald Trump succeeds in his proposal to increase military spending by $54 billion.
