Intro: If there’s one word that perfectly sums up the bombastic nature of 80s action cinema, it has to be ‘excess’. Action behemoths, big hair, muscles, fantastical landscapes, and arm-wrestling matches that could be won by the simple flip of your favourite cap. It was an amazing decade for movies, and for action movie icons. Looking back on the early career of one of the era’s most iconic megastars, Arnold Schwarzenegger, there’s one thing that jumps out like doomed cannon-fodder from one of his movies; they were never dull. After having successfully conquered the world of bodybuilding, and subsequently the glitz and glamour of Hollywood, with career defining roles in Conan the Barbarian, Conan the Destroyer, The Terminator and Red Sonja, it’s clear that going bigger would be better for his career. Those movies highlighted how Arnie’s impressive physique could be utilised for maximum effect,...

Animation and fantasy go hand in hand. In the 80s, there was a boom of fantasy epics in the land of cartoons that had nothing to do with the House of Mouse and everything to do with adult content. This was helped along from the previous decade by creator Ralph Bakshi, who had started things off with Fritz the Cat and would be the first to do a feature-length version of Lord of The Rings with his animated film and the trippy flick Wizards (and later – the cult film Cool World).
During our fave decade, Anime would find a welcoming home in the US with several classics that would be released during that time. Canada would also get into the mix with Heavy Metal (which we’ll get to.) But Ralph Bakshi decided to join forces with one of the biggest names in fantasy art for a new entry into...

Cleopatra Wong, a kick-ass Interpol agent known to have influenced some of Quentin Tarantino’s movies, is to be revived in an upcoming Asian TV series.
The female action hero was created by The Philippines’ Bobby Suarez (aka George Richardson) and featured in three movies – “They Call Her Cleopatra Wong,” “Dynamite Johnson” and “Devil’s Angels” (aka “Mean Business”) – produced in the late 1970s by Bas Film Productions. Her name is a reference to Blaxploitation character Cleopatra Jones, albeit melded with Bruce Lee action and early James Bond cool. Marrie Lee (aka Doris Young) starred in all three movies.
‘Dynamite Johnson’ poster courtesy of Everett Collection.
Tarantino has said that Wong was an inspiration for Uma Thurman’s central character in his “Kill Bill” movies. The “They Call Her…” title was also used for a succession of unrelated exploitation films in the U.S., Europe and The Philippines.

In the 30 years since Avi Lerner founded Millennium Media, then Nu Image, in 1992, the company, legendary at the American Film Market for its straight-to-video mockbusters (Freefall, Cyborg Cop), creature features (Crocodile, Killer Rats) and cookie-cutter macho action mov- ies (Operation Delta Force, Deadly Outbreak) has grown up. A bit.
Millennium hasn’t abandoned its genre roots, but by focusing on fewer, bigger movies that can secure proper theatrical releases — most of them economically shot at the company’s Nu Boyana studios in Bulgaria and Greece— the company has built up an impressive library of blockbuster franchises, from Gerard Butler’s Has Fallen series to action comedy romps The Hitman’s Bodyguard, featuring Ryan Reynolds, Samuel L. German star Veronica Ferres (Rossini, Crisis, Salt & Fire) has joined the cast of sword and sorcery reboot Red Sonja.
Ferres will play the mother of Red Sonja and the Goddess Ashera in the new film, which is being pitched as more an adaptation of Robert E. Howard’s original Marvel comic than a reboot of the 1985 feature starring Brigitte Nielsen and Arnold Schwarzenegger. The 80s film was a notorious flop. Producers Millennium Media are also handling international sales.
Italian-American actress Matilda Lutz (Revenge) is playing Red Sonja. Wallis Day, Robert Sheehan, Michael Bisping, Martyn Ford, Eliza Matengu, Manal El-Feitury and Katrina Durden co-star.
M.J. Bassett (Rouge, Silent Hill: Revelation) is directing, taking over from Joey Soloway, who is still attached as an executive producer on the project. Red Sonja is currently shooting at Millennium’s Nu Boyana studios in Sofia, Bulgaria.

Near the end of August, it was announced that the long-awaited Red Sonja reboot was filming with M.J. Bassett (Solomon Kane) directing and Matilda Lutz (Revenge) taking on the lead role. In early September, we heard that Oliver Trevena (The Rising Hawk) had joined Lutz in the cast – and Trevena’s character was the only one, other than Red Sonja herself, we ever got a description of. The actor had been cast as Tr’aal, “a gladiator-type warrior who joins Sonja in her fight against an evil emperor”. Unfortunately Deadline reports that Trevena has since had to drop out of Red Sonja due to scheduling issues. They also report that Rhona Mitra of Doomsday and Underworld: Rise of the Lycans is in the cast, but no details about her character have been revealed.

Richard Fleischer's peplum film "Red Sonja" was released in the United States on July 3, 1985, making it the very first feature film to be based on a Marvel Comics character. And while some scholars in the field of Depression-era pulp magazines might point out that Red Sonja actually finds her origins in Robert E. Howard's 1934 Magic Carpet Magazine short story "Shadow of the Vulture" (wherein she was called Red Sonya of Rogatino), it's clear that Fleischer's film was more directly based on Marvel's repurposed version of the character from 1973.
If one needs further evidence of the "Red Sonja" movie's Marvel credentials, one can point to the presence of Arnold Schwarzenegger in the film, as a very Conan-the-Barbarian-like character named Kalidor. While this doesn't technically link "Red Sonja" to the 1982 film version of "Conan the Barbarian," it's close enough to be considered at least a spinoff. After all,...

"Red Sonja" is finally getting a movie. Millennium Media announced on Aug. 23 that the movie, based on the comic-book character of the same name, will star Matilda Lutz as Red Sonja alongside "Batwoman" star Wallis Day and "The Umbrella Academy" actor Robert Sheehan. Millennium also confirmed the movie is currently in production.

In the nearly four decades since the first live-action film starring Brigitte Nielsen and Arnold Schwarzenegger, another adaptation of Dynamite Entertainment's "Red Sonja" has failed to materialize in Hollywood — but it's not for lack of trying. Robert Rodriguez once had a vision that included Rose McGowan in the titular role. Before allegations of sexual assault were brought to light, Bryan Singer was also in line to helm a project based on the character originally created for Marvel Comics in 1973 by writer Roy Thomas and artist Barry Windsor-Smith. And the third attempt in recent history included "Ant-Man and the Wasp" star Hannah John-Kamen as the lead and "Transparent" creator Joey Soloway in the director's chair.

"We could've ruled the world together!" Studiocanal UK has revealed a new trailer for the 4K restoration re-release of the campy action classic Red Sonja, which originally opened in July of 1985. Directed by Richard Fleischer, the epic 80s fantasy action film Red Sonja has been restored in 4K Uhd with a score from the legendary Academy Award-Winning composer Ennio Morricone. Based on stories by the creator of Conan the Barbarian, Robert E. Howard and featuring new original artwork by the artist Renato Casaro (seen below). The film will be distributed to UK theaters by Warner Bros. Entertainment, Inc. and make its streaming premiere following the close of its theatrical window via AMC Network’s Shudder, which negotiated exclusive North American rights with Well Go.
Hannah John-Kamen and Douglas Booth star in the creature feature, as a couple who escape their urban nightmare to the tranquility of rural Ireland, only to hear stories of mysterious beings who live in the gnarled, ancient wood at the foot of their new garden. As warned by their new neighbors, in Irish mythology, the Redcaps will come when called to help souls in dire need of rescue, but it’s crucial to...

It’s a misguided assumption to think that a movie is going to be great just because it’s connected in any way to another, bigger movie that takes place in the same universe. Red Sonja has been a name that many people have known for years now since she’s been built up as one of the greatest warriors to ever be created for the comics and the screen, but the movie was pretty horrible despite the forgiving nature of many Conan fans. Arnold Schwarzenegger has been in a lot of movies over the course of his career, but this is one

There are likely those that will cringe when they hear the term ‘feminist hero’ until they’re clued in on the fact that the hero in question is Red Sonja, one of the most iconic names in the fantasy genre. It’s true that her live-action appearance did come out in true form as she was mistrustful of most men, but thanks to her backstory she had a reason to be. After all, in the movie, her entire family was killed, and her origin story includes her being violently raped, so it’s hard to understand why she’s not trusting when it comes

So in a month packed full of Future State titles from DC, and the King in Black stuff from Marvel, I’ve decided to go elsewhere for the first of my weekly reviews. Why? Well, as much as I do love Marvel and DC, I do also know a bit about the business, and the endless special events are as much about market share as fan service. By putting out such a glut of titles, they hope you won’t go elsewhere for your comics fix, a bit like Disney getting you on property when you visit the theme parks. So, scouting around, I thought this book looked interesting. I loved the Project Superpowers stuff that Dynamite has put out in the past, and who doesn’t love a warrior redhead in a chainmail bikini sticking it to the man?...

Wonder Woman 1984 has finally made its debut in theaters and on WB’s streaming service HBO Max, and the internet is losing it over all the action and emotion that Patty Jenkins has packed into her sequel.
After several delays due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Gal Gadot’s next solo adventure as Diana Prince is now available for fans to experience and this time, the movie takes us to the Cold War era, with Chris Pine’s Steve Trevor also making a comeback after sacrificing himself to save the world during the events of the first film. And so, with two different villains in the form of Maxwell Lord (Pedro Pascal) and Cheetah (Kristen Wiig) and a narrative that the cast has so far kept pretty close to the chest, it’s safe to say that WW84 is as plot heavy and surprising as it is emotionally engaging.

Monster specialist Grant Walker of award-winning VFX studio Framestore was excited when he received an offer to work on an episode of sci-fi anthology Black Mirror’s third season. But the nature of the job, for an episode called “Playtest”, proved to be an unexpected one.
“I thought: ‘they want to make monsters for Black Mirror? I don’t get it,’” Walker says.
Through two seasons and six episodes on Channel 4, the monsters of Black Mirror were largely metaphorical and unseen, signals and dispatches from mobile devices in a dubiously fictional world. Then the show was picked up by Netflix, which quickly commissioned a six-episode third season. Among those six episodes was “Playtest,” an hour starring Wyatt Russell (Lodge 49), Wunmi Mosaku (Lovecraft Country), and Hannah John-Kamen (Ant-Man and the Wasp). When that episode premiered on Oct. 21, 2016 it looked quite different from any other Black Mirror installment before it.

We are happy to read the conclusion in issue #12 to this very well-written/illustrated series, but sad to see the Mistress of the Dark's adventures end in this comic's run. More characters from Robert E. Howard will join Conan the Barbarian in the Marvel Universe.
Marvel Comics has signed a deal to bring more of Conan the Barbarian creator Robert E. Howard’s works to Marvel. Since Conan arrived back at Marvel earlier this year, the company has had great success with the most savage hero of all. Marvel has delighted fans’ bloodlust with both Conan the Barbarian by Jason Aaron and Savage Sword of Conan by a rotating group of bloodthirsty creators. Marvel has also featured Conan leading ladies Belit and Valeria in the Age of Conan series as well as bringing Conan into the Marvel Universe in the pages of Savage Avengers. Conan and Punisher is a thing I never knew I wanted until I got it.
But now the bloody bond between Marvel and Robert E. Howard’s greatest creation is about to get a whole lot bigger.

It looks like Millennium Films’ feature film adaptation of Red Sonja is back on track. The production company has hired the creator of Amazon’sTransparent, Jill Soloway, to write and direct the film. She will replace Bryan Singer who was fired after several serious sexual misconduct allegations were made against him.
I never thought that Singer was the right filmmaking to take on Red Sonja, but I have no idea if Soloway is the right person to take it on either. I’m not really familiar with any of her recent work, but I liked what she did on Six Feet Under. So, I guess we’ll have to wait and see how she handles the character and story.
