How does one repay a team of producers for launching its highest grossing film of all time? Give them the key to the studio — literally.
On Monday, “Barbie” producers, LuckyChap’s Margot Robbie, Tom Ackerley and Josey McNamara inked a first-look deal at Warner Bros., which distributed the $1.4 billion-grossing movie. So, to celebrate, Warner Bros. Pictures Group Co-Chairs and CEO Pam Abdy and Michael De Luca decided to resurrect an old tradition, started by WB co-founder Jack Warner.
“Every once in a while, when a significant piece of talent signed a deal with the studio, he presented that company, that talent, with a key to the studio,” De Luca said as he and Abdy raised a toast to the trio. “We are so delighted to have our first key to our studio be given to LuckyChap.”

Australia’s favorite family of Blue Heeler dogs is expanding its YouTube presence. BBC Studios‘ social media division has launched Bluey Book Reads, an original series that pairs Bluey stories with celebrity narrators.
In each episode of Bluey Book Reads, a special guest reads from one of the dozens of Bluey books that follow the domestic life of the titular seven-year-old dog and her family of four. Bluey has run for three seasons on TV and streaming since its 2018 premiere, but for the Book Reads series, global distributor BBC Studios is taking the Heelers to their official YouTube channel. That’s where a teaser for the new show — and the first episode — landed on February 12.
BBC Studios’ Kids & Family unit developed Book Reads alongside Bluey producer Ludo Studio. The books featured in the series have all been published by Penguin Random House, a BBC Studios licensee. The celebrities who will...

Stephen Fry is set to deliver a deeply person Alternative Christmas Message for U.K. broadcaster Channel 4, in which he will address the rising tide of antisemitism across the world.
Calling for solidarity, Fry, who is an atheist and a humanist, urges the audience to call out antisemitism as they would any other form of racism: “Standing upright means speaking up and calling out venomous slurs and hateful abuse wherever you encounter them.”
“There is real fear stalking the Jewish neighbourhoods of Britain,” he continues. “Jewish people here are becoming fearful of showing themselves. In Britain, in 2023. Can you imagine, Jews afraid to be themselves in the open for fear of reprisal?”
Fry opens the message, which will air shortly after King Charles III’s annual Christmas speech on the BBC, by publicly proclaiming his own Jewishness, a fact he says many people don’t realize. “Indeed sometimes people...

Oscar-winning “Milk” screenwriter Dustin Lance Black was acquitted Wednesday of assault in a London magistrate court after a judge dismissed the case, first brought against Black in April.
District Judge Louisa Cieciora, who presided over the trial at Westminster Magistrates Court in the U.K., said she could “not properly convict” Black based on the evidence.
The writer, whose latest work “Rustin” came out in theaters last month, pled not guilty to the charges in court in April. He was released on unconditional bail with plans to reappear in court in August.
The charges stem from an encounter between Black and BBC reality show host Teddy Edwardes, in which Black suffered a concussion. He was accused of grabbing and twisting Edwardes’ wrist, causing a drink to spill on her. Black’s husband, Olympic diver Tom Daley, was also in attendance at the Freedom nightclub in London’s Soho, where the altercation occurred.

A UK assault trial for Oscar-winning screenwriter Dustin Lance Black was dismissed by a judge Wednesday after the trial got underway.
The judge, Louisa Ciecióra of Westminster Magistrates’ Court, ruled that there was inconsistent and insufficient evidence that BBC3 presenter Teddy Edwardes was the victim of an assault in an altercation with Black at a Soho nightclub in August 2022.
The ruling, reported by the Daily Mail, meant that Black and his husband, Olympic diver Tom Daley, did not have to take the stand.
According to London’s Metropolitan Police, officers were called to the Freedom nightclub in London’s Soho district after midnight in August last year following reports of “an altercation” at the bar between a man in his 40s and a woman in her 30s. Black had reportedly grabbed Edwardes’ wrist and spilled her drink, after which she allegedly hit him in the head as Daley looked on.

Paul Hollywood was unable to stomach Lucy Beaumont’s “bizarre” showstopper on The Great Celebrity Bake Off.
The comedian was one of the contestants on the Stand Up To Cancer charity edition of Bake Off on Sunday (2 April), where she appeared alongside Tom Daley, Adele Roberts and David Morissey.
In the final round, Beaumont presented the judges with a showstopper inspired by a carvery Sunday lunch.
“If we asked you for your worst nightmare, then I’d think you’d win,” Prue Leith joked, as Beaumont asked them not to judge her final task.
Hollywood took a bite, but immediately spat the cake back out, telling her: “I wouldn’t say it’s inedible, but it’s on the way. I’ve never had a cake like it. It’s bizarre.”

Welcome to this week’s “Just for Variety.”
It’s not every day that an action movie stars an 80-year- old. But leave it to octogenarian Harrison Ford to return as Indiana Jones in “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny,” the fifth installment of the iconic franchise.
While moviegoers may be surprised to see Ford return four decades after making the first film, the actor has long felt he’d be back. “I always wanted to do it,” he told me at the premiere of his Apple TV+ comedy series “Shrinking.” “I wanted to do the rest of the story to see the end of his career.”
But even Ford has his limits. He insists he’s hung up Indy’s fedora and bullwhip for good: “It’s the last time for me.”

Exclusive: A+E Studios and Range Media Partners have prevailed in a competitive auction surrounding Swedish crime novelist Christoffer Carlsson’s International bestseller Blaze Me a Sun and its follow-up, Under the Storm, securing film and TV rights to both titles.
The announcement comes hot on the heels of Good Morning America‘s naming of Blaze Me a Sun as its Buzz Pick of the Week. The title, first published in the U.S. by Hogarth Books on January 3, tells the tale of a small town’s collective guilt when a serial killer commits his first murder the same night the prime minister is assassinated. Under the Storm has not yet been published in the U.S., though it’s currently available in Sweden.
“We are delighted to be working with Christoffer to adapt Blaze Me A Sun and Under The Storm,” said Range’s Co-Heads of International, Oliver Riddle & Thomas Daley.

It’s Dame Donna Langley now.
The Universal Filmed Entertainment Group chairman, who is the first British woman to run a Hollywood studio, received her investiture from Prince Charles at Windsor Castle in England on Tuesday.

Regé-Jean Page and girlfriend Emily Brown attended the social event of the season on July 8 - and no, it wasn't one of Queen Charlotte's lavish balls. The couple popped up at day 12 of Wimbledon to watch tennis players Novak Djokovic and Cameron Norrie go head to head in the men's singles semifinal match.
The "Bridgerton" actor and English writer cozied up and chitchatted in the stands wearing a beige suit and white sundress, respectively. They sat next to fellow Hollywood couple Rami Malek and Lucy Boynton while watching the action go down on the court. If only we had Lady Whistledown on the case to find out what the foursome discussed during the match.

It’s not even halfway through the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, but the storylines coming out of Japan have been shocking. Every morning, Americans wake up to another surprise victory — or a missed podium.

British diver Tom Daley said he hoped the huge number of LGBTQ athletes at the Tokyo Olympics would help inspire a new generation after he finally won his first Olympic gold medal after four competitions.
