It's been six movies since Gareth Edwards' "Godzilla" in 2014, and Adam Wingard seems to have finally cracked the code. Wingard's sublimely silly "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire" happily abandoned all the portent and dourness of the first MonsterVerse movie, choosing instead to celebrate shallow monster mayhem and sugared-up, Saturday-morning-ready fantasy conceits that gleefully abandon logic. Kong lives in the Hollow Earth and fights jackal monsters, while Godzilla rules the surface world where he fights crabs and naps in the Colosseum. These are the basic tenets of a skewed universe lousy with monsters. There are magical stones under the earth that control gravity and miniature wormholes that monsters use to teleport around the planet. Everything is wild and nothing makes sense. And there is an integrity to that.
It seems, however, that there was some injection of actual reality into the film's production. Wingard and his crew filmed "Godzilla x Kong" in Gold Coast,...

Anyone who has seen "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire" — and going by the film's impressive box-office numbers, that oughta be most of you out there — knows that Dan Stevens is an absolute delight in it. To be fair, this isn't a huge surprise, as anyone who's been following Stevens' on-screen career knows that the actor is routinely a highlight of everything he appears in, whether he's the lead in something like FX's "Legion" and "GxK" director Adam Wingard's "The Guest" or (and sometimes especially) when he's appearing as a supporting character in films like "Colossal" or this month's "Abigail."
His role of Trapper in "GxK" seems particularly special, however, given that Stevens isn't merely playing a comic relief character. Instead, he's some unique combination of a wonder-filled adventurer, an animal-loving veterinarian, and a laid-back hippie dude. That's just one way of describing Trapper, however — Stevens himself has...

Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire brought American audiences into the fun schlock that defined a run of the Godzilla movies which is called the “Showa era.” This era is basically what people think of when you bring up Godzilla because it’s all about the giant monster battles. The movies are also usually given an out-there, psychedelic plot that drives the monsters into fighting each other. Godzilla X Kong was a smashing success at the box office and has the studio confident in its upcoming plans for sequels. Legendary’s chairman, Mary Parent, would state, “This (box office) is certainly an exciting result. We are in a good position to continue the journey, but let’s see how Godzilla x Kong unfolds. These are early days, but we are certainly feeling good.“
The director of Godzilla X Kong, Adam Wingard, brought in his trusted writer, Simon Barrett for this installment.

In Adam Wingard's new monster mash "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire," Dan Stevens' character -- the rock 'n' roll monster veterinarian named Trapper -- is introduced leaping on board a high-tech helicopter equipped with strange grappling hooks and pulleys. Trapper has been called in to sedate and perform dental surgery on Kong, who is suffering from a titanic toothache. Trapper hoots and grins as he is lowered into the unconscious Kong's mouth, eager to see what the problem is. He yanks out Kong's tooth and replaces it with an artificial implant, smiling all the while.
Trapper is like an ultra-cool version of Ace Ventura, complete with skillfully windswept hair and Hawaiian shirts. The character looks like he's just as ready to attend a days-long music festival as he is to tend to the wounds of ailing megafauna. Throughout "Godzilla x Kong," he wears a perma-smirk, always bemused to...

Adam Wingard’s Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire shattered box office expectations and overperformed in its opening weekend. While most critics have not enjoyed the film. audiences are lapping it up and celebrating the reunion of Godzilla and Kong and their team-up to face a terrifying new threat. The Monsterverse continues its success streak and is not stopping anytime soon.
Adam Wingard started making his stamp on the Monsterverse with 2021’s Godzilla vs. Kong
The success of the film makes it highly likely that Warner Bros and Legendary will soon announce a third film with Wingard returning to finish his trilogy. The director has already expressed his desire to complete it and now the heads at Legendary are optimistic about a third film happening soon, for witnessing the impressive box office collections.

Typically, when a movie is a box office smash, that means that it makes a ton of money. But for the legendary stars of Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, they mean it in a much more literal sense.
As audiences around the world watch these icons of the silver screen reunite for director Adam Wingard’s second MonsterVerse movie, many are likely looking to know more about this massive blockbuster. Luckily, Daily Dead was able to speak with the filmmaker ahead of the sequel’s theatrical release to pull back the curtain on a few details surrounding the Titan tag team turmoil.
In the first part of our interview with Wingard, he discussed how his corner of this cinematic universe was largely inspired by the toys of the 1980s. Not only did this apply to the overall look and feel of the marketing materials or the characters, but it also extended to Hollow Earth,...

Jet Jaguar is one of the most anticipated additions to the Godzilla cinematic universe. The towering robotic hero first appeared in the 1973 Toho Godzilla film Godzilla vs. Megalon.
Initially, he wasn’t on Godzilla’s side. The undersea civilization (the Seatopians), stole control of Jet Jaguar and used him to guide their giant monster, Megalon, in attacking the surface world.
Godzilla vs. Megalon (1973)
In a surprising twist, Jet Jaguar gained its own consciousness and chose to use its powers for good. Recognizing the danger posed by Megalon, he sought out the assistance of Godzilla. This marked the first (and only) time Jet Jaguar and Godzilla fought together in a Toho Godzilla film.
In the TV series Godzilla Island, viewers are introduced to three variations of Jet Jaguar: a silver model, Medical Jet Jaguar, and Fire Fighter Jet Jaguar. He then made an appearance in the 2021 Netflix animated series Godzilla Singular Point...

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire premiered on March 29, 2024, as the most recent installment in the MonsterVerse franchise. The movie received mixed reviews from critics and is one of the installments with the lowest score, but fans are amazed as things stand now, and the box office earnings seem to confirm that. The movie surpassed expectations for its opening day and previews, and now that the first weekend is over, it has earned an amazing $194 million, landing the best opening weekend of the year, as well as breaking into the top ten list of highest-grossing movies after just one weekend.
The movie has just started its theatrical run, and to be frank, it is projected to become a box office hit. With the success of the movie, the MonsterVerse franchise also managed to hit past the $2-billion mark, becoming one of the most lucrative franchises in movie history.

This weekend sees the release of the fifth film in WB/Legendary’s MonsterVerse saga, Godzilla x Kong: The New Era. These films have attempted to somewhat reinvent the traditional Kaiju film for Western audiences, with our mighty monster heroes being called Titans. While the franchise arguably stumbled out of the gate with Gareth Edwards’ coolly received Godzilla, the saga has steadily grown in popularity, and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire is looking like a big hit. But how do the films stack up against each other? Let’s take a look with our MonsterVerse Movies Ranked List!
Godzilla:
Audiences were pretty hyped for Gareth Edwards’ 2014 Godzilla reboot, with awesome early trailers that used Ligeti’s Requiem II from 2001: A Space Odyssey, promising the most intense Kaiju movie to date. It didn’t really work out that way, with many complaining about how dull the film was,...

Iconic characters survive the brunt of time and stay relevant through generations by adapting to new themes and varying treatments—an aspect that is clearly noticeable when we take a look at the seventy-year journey of Godzilla in the pop culture landscape. In a journey that mimics that of another pop culture legend, Batman’s transformation in comics itself, Toho’s Godzilla movies have ranged from originating in grim-dark disaster horror-themed spectacles to pure campy monster battles intended for the amusement of the younger section of the audience to metaphorical sci-fi allegories. Such a variety of treatment has not only made character timeless but has also paved the way for the global popularity of the iconic Kaiju. Which is why we can have a Godzilla movie set as a post-World War II human drama and, within a few months, have another one radically differing in tone as a monster bash-em-up movie,...

Plot: When a signal from an uncharted area of Hollow Earth riles up Godzilla, Monarch’s team has to investigate, while Kong discovers a lost society which may give him the home he’s long desired.
Review: This holiday weekend sees the release of Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, which marks the fifth film in Warners and Legendary’s Monsterverse saga, which, to be sure, has been very hit-and-miss. For every Kong: Skull Island, there’s an entry that leaves us scratching our heads with its shared universe, mostly related to the evil company Monarch, which recently got its own show on Apple TV Plus. Interestingly, this universe has never been tremendously successful with audiences. WB would have likely thrown in the towel were it not that Godzilla Vs Kong was a surprise smash at the box office. Adam Wingard returns to the director’s chair to deliver a second helping of the mother of all monster battles, following his superlative work on 2021’s Godzilla Vs Kong. Warning! Spoilers ahead for "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire."
The MonsterVerse is getting a massive upgrade with "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire" — and not only because director Adam Wingard is introducing a crop of brand-new villains to the fray. The eponymous Titans are also getting a few enhancements of their own: Godzilla is somehow pink now, while Kong sports a bright-yellow mechanical arm. As Dr. Ilene Andrews says in the film's latest trailer, some "minor augmentations" are pretty much par the course at this stage of the franchise. Godzilla and Kong might have put their primordial beef to rest, but that's only because they've got to deal with the new threat that is the Skar King. For all their individual power, that's one gnarly kaiju, and they definitely can't defeat him alone.
So yeah, "The New Empire" follows Godzilla on his quest to amass more nuclear energy, while...

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire releases in theaters March 29, 2024.
I hold a special place in my heart for Godzilla (2014) by Gareth Edwards, which remains my favorite film of the MonsterVerse saga. Kong: Skull Island has managed to improve the overall opinion over the years, unlike Godzilla: King of the Monsters, which continues to be a major disappointment even after a couple of rewatches. In 2021, Adam Wingard found the ideal balance between the titanic battles, human storylines, and just the right amount of openly absurd fun in Godzilla vs. Kong. Therefore, excitement levels were high for Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.
Former adversaries, Godzilla and Kong must join forces to fight a mysterious common enemy that emerges from the depths of the Hollow Earth. Meanwhile, the human characters focus on exploring the unknown origins of the Titans, in addition to providing small but valuable assistance in the impending battles.

Godzilla vs. Kong – the fifth film in the Monsterverse franchise – stumbles into cinemas with all the grace of a giant lizard battling an oversized ape, and sadly, it never quite finds its footing.
Directed by Death Note and Godzilla vs. Kong director Adam Wingard, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire sees the return of Rebecca Hall as Monarch anthropological linguist, and Kaylee Hottle as her adoptive daughter Jia. Also back for another slice of Kaiju mayhem is Brian Tyree Henry as Bernie Hayes, a Cybernetics technician turned conspiracy theorist and podcaster.
Kong, accompanied by his guardians, embarks on a treacherous quest to uncover his ancestral homeland. Their journey takes an unexpected turn when they cross paths with a rampaging Godzilla, leaving a trail of devastation in his wake.

There is a twist with the latest offering from the now-decade-old Monsterverse, a franchise that has featured Kong and Godzilla in their own movies and then in 2021’s Godzilla vs. Kong battling each other to the death. (These monsters never really die. But you knew that). The twist this time is there an even greater threat for these iconic giant creatures to each other and the world, so instead of being on opposite sides of the ring, they team up against an evil new villain, a batshit-crazy ape on steroids named Skar King, in order to save not just Hollow Earth — where most of the action takes place in a dense rainforest — but just about everyone else.

Watching “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire,” I realized that the movie, a standard overly busy and mediocre blockbuster with a pretty awesome wow of a clash-of-the-titans climax, was demonstrating one of the essential principles of Hollywood movie culture today. Namely: All blockbuster movies are now connected!
Kong, living in the Hollow Earth, where most of the film is set, is supposedly the last of his kind, but he discovers a child ape who actually looks like an homage to the cuddly creature in the 1967 Japanese film “Son of Godzilla.” This kid gorilla leads Kong to a tribe of scraggly hostile apes who are living in a slave society presided over by the Skar King, an evil ape with blotchy red hair who’s as tall as Kong and wields a skeletal bone whip that looks like it was fashioned out of the spine of a sea serpent. He also commands,...

The heavyweight championship event that was Godzilla vs. Kong ended in a tenuous truce that saw Godzilla holding dominion over Earth while King Kong claimed Hollow Earth. Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire introduces a new Titan-sized threat from the depths of Hollow Earth, one so dangerous that Kong and his human allies will need all the help they can get to defeat it. Director Adam Wingard continues the kaiju spectacle with the latest Legendary Monsterverse crossover event, this time injecting an even greater sense of adventure and silliness. It’s the type of epic-sized popcorn movie that unleashes nonstop monster brawls and tongue-in-cheek humor in equal measure.
Since the events of Godzilla vs. Kong, Godzilla spends his downtime curling up for naptime in Rome’s Colosseum when not snuffing out rogue Titans that emerge. The kaiju king’s activity is closely monitored by Monarch and Dr. Ilene Andrews (Rebecca Hall). Dr.

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire had me feeling like a little Donato again; sitting on the couch, cradling a bowl of sugary cereal, with my favorite Saturday morning cartoons on TV (like Godzilla: The Series). Will the screenplay win an Academy Award? Hell no. Does director Adam Wingard have an absolute blast staging supersized Titan mayhem? Big time.
Godzilla: Minus One satisfied our cravings for societally introspective and richly commentative kaiju narratives that produce more than citywide destruction. Godzilla x Kong is almost exclusively about everything Toho’s Oscar-winning Godzilla flick is not. The only thing missing from this royally massive rumbler is famed ring announcer Michael Buffer’s “Let’s get ready to rumble!” catchphrase and a ring bell’s ding each time mayhem erupts. The fifth and latest entry in the Warner Bros. MonsterVerse franchise has the misfortune of arriving on the heels of the Oscar-crowned Godzilla Minus One. That Japanese film demonstrated that it’s still possible to make a monster movie involving the iconic, irradiated giant lizard that also features a compelling narrative and memorable characters. Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, on the other hand, mainly traffics in the sort of CGI-generated mayhem resembling a video game that will please the series’ fans but doesn’t bring anything new to attract non-diehards. At one point in the film, Godzilla, weary from all that stomping around, lies down to take a well-deserved nap in the middle of Rome’s Colosseum. It’s the most relatable moment in the film.

So there’s this big prehistoric lizard, see, and once upon a time, the powers that be tried to kill him with a nuclear bomb. No dice, alas. But that turned out to be a good thing, as this gargantuan fire-breathing reptile ended up fighting other ginormous creatures — sometimes called Massive Unidentified Terrestrial Organisms (MUTOs), sometimes called “Titans” — and despite doing incalculable property damage in various metropolitan cities around the world, the media-dubbed “King of the Monsters” mostly helped keep the world safe from harm. Thanks!

Adam Wingard's "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire" isn't so much a feature film as it is a Joycean stream-of-consciousness ramble escaped from the mind of a sugared-up eight-year-old, his tongue stained with the remnants of Blue Raspberry Warheads, slamming action figures together, roaring to himself in destructive ecstasy. Whereas Wingard's previous Godzilla film -- 2021's "Godzilla vs. Kong" -- brilliantly embraced the inherent silliness of the monsters' late-'60s Toho entries, "New Empire" tilts full-bore into the realm of Saturday morning cartoons, presenting a brazenly toyetic and visually wild romp that will crack even the hardest of hearts. "Godzilla x Kong" may make a viewer measurably dumber, but golly, that viewer will be entertained.
"Godzilla x Kong" moves so fast as to make one dizzy, and the visuals are so busy that a large caffeinated beverage may be required to keep up. The film climaxes with multiple monsters,...

Adam Wingard’s Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire picks up a few years after the events of Godzilla vs. Kong, with the two eponymous titans keeping the peace by staying in their separate realms. Godzilla now busies himself protecting humanity from various threats, and napping in Rome’s Colosseum, while Kong jumps and swings around Hollow Earth, tearing apart critters and wistfully hoping to find other enormous apes like himself. Given the film’s title, their teaming up is an inevitability, but Godzilla x Kong takes its sweet time getting there, spending much of its first 90 minutes engaging in pointless, anticlimactic world-building in Hollow Earth and elaborating on the wisecrack-laden and cringe-inducing human drama above.
In Hollow Earth, Kong finally runs into a trio of angry apes nearly his size, along with a pesky young ape who’s trying to prove his toughness, though it’s not exactly the...

Internet trends have come and gone but the craze for Godzilla and King Kong has not diminished. The individual appearance of any of these monsters alone is enough to drive crowds to the cinema. The world has already witnessed an instance of the monsters sharing a screen, and the second one is almost out. The recent claims of Godzilla x Kong’s director have only added to the excitement, although the initial reviews are not very convincing.

You asked, and Adam Wingard listened.
Coming off of 2021’s Godzilla vs. Kong, the filmmaker was keenly aware that critics and audiences wanted even more focus on the MonsterVerse titans, so his sequel, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, features multiple long stretches of runtime that’s exclusively titans, namely Kong and his journey. The giant ape is the main character of Warners’ fifth MonsterVerse film, and Wingard was able to pull off this more titan-heavy story by keeping his cast of human characters to a helpful minimum.
“In the development phase, my motto was ‘simplicity is key.’ And so I knew that if we created a smaller cast, we could create a more intimate story,” Wingard tells The Hollywood Reporter. “We can still spend time with [the human characters], and at the same time, we can spend more time with the monsters and not shortchange one or the other.”

Dan Stevens had a "ton of fun" filming 'Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire'.The 41-year-old actor was excited when his 'The Guest' director Adam Wingard called him to discuss the prospect of playing Trapper in the blockbuster opposite his "old buddy" Rebecca Hall, and he had a great time making the film.Speaking at the Los Angeles premiere of the movie on Monday (25.03.24), he told 'Entertainment Tonight': "It's an incredible call to get at the best of times, but to get it from an old friend, Adam Wingard, who directed the last installment of these, to join Rebecca Hall, who is one of my oldest buddies, Brian Tyree Henry, who I adore - and they wrote me an incredible character."So, you know, it was just a ton of fun."The British star is also awaiting the release of horror thriller 'Abigail' and...

It may be Valentine’s Day, but it’s also a Godzilla kind of day. Earlier today, I shared the news that Godzilla Minus One director Takashi Yamazaki wants to make a sequel to that Toho production that would feature some “kaiju vs. kaiju” action, and now a new trailer has arrived online for a different Godzilla monster mash, the fifth film in the Legendary Monsterverse, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. This film is set to reach theatres on March 29th, and you can watch the new trailer in the embed above.
Godzilla vs. Kong director Adam Wingard is back at the helm for Godzilla x Kong, working from a screenplay written by Simon Barrett (You’re Next), Terry Rossio (the Pirates of the Caribbean series), and Jeremy Slater (Moon Knight) that follows up the explosive showdown of Godzilla vs. Kong with an all-new cinematic adventure, pitting the almighty Kong...

The fifth film in the Legendary Monsterverse, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire was once set to reach theatres and IMAX on March 15th, then it slid back to April 12th before recently being moved back up to March 29th. Hopefully they’ll stick with that date. It seems pretty certain that we’ll be seeing the movie very soon regardless, especially since it just happens to have received its rating from the Motion Picture Association ratings board. FilmRatings.com reports that Godzilla x Kong has officially been rated PG-13 for creature violence and action. Exactly what we’ve been expecting from it.

If you clicked on this article because you saw the headline and thought, "They've gotta be talking about King Kong's King Dong, right?" Boy, do I have the news article for you! We at /Film are embarrassingly excited for Adam Wingard's upcoming "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire," especially because it's starting to feel like he definitely understands that the "x" is commonly used in fandom spaces to indicate they want the characters to f–get together romantically and pulled a fast one on the execs at Warner Bros. While there's no way in kaiju hell "Godzilla x Kong" is going to take the same approach to the King of the Monsters as "Godzilla Minus One," there's no such thing as too much Godzilla. Serious Godzilla, sentimental Godzilla, a low-budget nonsensical rubber suit Godzilla ... as long as I've got big bois being big, I'm a happy movie fan.

The fifth film in the Legendary Monsterverse, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire is set to reach theatres and IMAX on March 15, 2024. The monster mash gets some coverage in the latest issue of Total Film magazine – in fact, it’s even the cover story – and Total Film has also dropped a few images from the film online. Featured in these images are returning Godzilla vs. Kong stars Rebecca Hall and Brian Tyree Henry, who reprise the roles of Monarch linguist and Kong expert Dr. Ilene Andrews and Apex Cybernetics technician turned cult podcaster Bernie Hayes, as well as new addition Dan Stevens as a character named Trapper. You can check them out at the bottom of this article.
Stevens previously worked with Godzilla vs. Kong and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire director Adam Wingard (who also shows up in one of the images) on the 2014 cult classic thriller The Guest.

‘Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire’ – First Look at Dan Stevens as a Kaiju Expert Plus More New Images
While we wait for the final episodes of Apple TV+ series “Monarch: Legacy of Monsters,” we’re also gearing up for the big screen return of Legendary’s Monsterverse. Godzilla and King Kong are back – and this time, they’re teaming up to fight a common enemy! – in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, which will be unleashed only in theaters on April 12, 2024.
Total Film shares three new images from the upcoming sequel to Godzilla vs. Kong this morning, and these images highlight the human characters rather than the film’s monsters.
Rebecca Hall is back as Dr. Ilene Andrews with Brian Tyree Henry also returning as Bernie Hayes, and they’ll be joined in Godzilla x Kong by Dan Stevens (The Guest).
Stevens is playing a character named Trapper. The actor tells Total Film, “[My character is] a specialist in these creatures… If you’ve got a sick titan, Trap is your guy.

Comedic breaking: it's been around for pretty much as long as performances. Flip through classic TV channels and you'll find Rue McClanahan delivering her lines into the back of her hand to hide giggles in episodes of "The Golden Girls," Mary Tyler Moore barely suppressing her grin in"The Dick Van Dyke Show," and Horatio Sanz wiping away tears with Mickey Mouse waffles on "Saturday Night Live." Breaking seems like an unstoppable phenomenon, especially once more than one castmate well and truly gets the giggles, but it's also a surprisingly controversial one: for every person who laughs along with the actors, there seems to be another who thinks breaking is unfunny and unprofessional.
Larry Gelbart, who created the influential and long-running '70s sitcom "M*A*S*H," was apparently not into character breaks, and he told author Ed Solomonson that one actor in the show's ensemble cast did it more than any other.

If you caught up with "M*A*S*H" sometime after the beloved wartime sitcom ended its much-lauded original run, you'd be forgiven for having no clue about the series' spinoffs. After all, 50 years after it first aired, "M*A*S*H" remains a major pillar of TV history -- for its rollicking anti-authority spirit and bleeding heart attitude, its genre-blending and experimental episodes, and its record-breaking finale telecast, which is still by some measures the most-watched in the history of television. "AfterMASH," though? Well, not so much.
It's a testament to the flagship series' strengths that decades after it ended, its bizarre and short-lived spinoffs haven't tainted its reputation at all. In fact, they've mostly been forgotten, in part because they're unavailable on streaming and tough to find on home video. Three "M*A*S*H" spinoffs were made in hopes of capitalizing on some of the original series' magic, but only one -- the...

For one of television history's most beloved sitcoms, "M*A*S*H" was always walking a tight line. Premiering in 1972, it would go on for 11 years, depicting with raunchy humor and deep pathos the plights of a mobile surgical hospital on the frontlines of the Korean War. Early on, the show adopted the anarchic, bawdy comedic sensibility of the books by Richard Hooker (pseudonym for H. Richard Hornberger) and their 1970 Robert Altman film adaptation. But as with most long-running television shows, things change.
"M*A*S*H" was only nominally about the Korean War. It was hardly concerned with period-accurate detail (as plenty of the hairstyles demonstrate) and characters like series lead Hawkeye (Alan Alda) felt entirely out of time to begin with. Hawkeye's sense of humor was like the Marx Brothers, only translated to the then-current war in Vietnam. Korea existed in dialogue and major plotlines, but the feelings the show evoked were directly in conversation with contemporaneous issues.
