“Fleabag” was overlooked at the Emmys two years ago when its first season was eligible for consideration. But the television academy won’t make that mistake again, at least not according to many of the Expert journalists we’ve polled. Season two of the Amazon series premiered in May almost three years after the first season. And as Experts have updated their Emmy predictions in the weeks since, the series has been on the rise.
As of this writing 9 out of 20 Experts are predicting it will be nominated for Best Comedy Series: Jen Chaney (Vulture), Debbie Day (Rotten Tomatoes), Eric Deggans (NPR), Kelly Lawler (USA Today), Robert Rorke (New York Post), Anne Thompson (IndieWire), Ben Travers (IndieWire), Ken Tucker (Yahoo) and Glenn Whipp (La Times).

Four years after AMC’s “Mad Men” went off the air, nine-time Emmy winner Matthew Weiner is back in the awards conversation for his anthology series “The Romanoffs.” The truly inventive Amazon Prime program tells the story of various descendants of the infamous Russian royal family living in today’s world, with each of its can’t-miss episodes focusing on a different cast and story. Instead of entering the program as Best Limited Series at the 2019 Emmys, the streaming service has opted to submit three of its eight segments as Best TV Movie: “End of the Line,” “The Violet Hour” and “House of Special Purpose.” Will Emmy voters welcome Weiner back to their exclusive party this year?

Ben Whishaw (“A Very English Scandal“) has led our Emmy predictions for Best Movie/Mini Supporting Actor ever since we opened our predictions center earlier this spring. But might we be underestimating his rivals? According to our racetrack odds, he needs to be most wary of two actors from “Catch-22“: Oscar winner George Clooney and past Emmy champ Kyle Chandler.
Whishaw co-stars in “Scandal” as Norman Scott, who is the victim of an attempted murder orchestrated by his lover, prominent politician Jeremy Thorpe (played by Hugh Grant). Written by BAFTA winner Russell T. Davies and directed by Oscar nominee Stephen Frears, the three-part series certainly had an impressive pedigree, and Whishaw has already been awarded for his performance by the Golden Globes and Critics’ Choice Awards.

But “Catch-22” wasn’t eligible at those awards since it didn’t premiere until this May.

The eligibility period for the 2019 Emmys ended on May 31, and voting for nominees gets underway on June 10, but the race for Best Drama Actor is still no clearer than it ever was. Last year’s champ, Matthew Rhys (“The Americans”), is out of the running because his show ended its run. So who will fill that vacuum? According to the Expert journalists we’ve polled from major media outlets, there are seven men who may win, even though there are only six guaranteed slots for nominations.
The Experts’ favorite as of this writing is Bob Odenkirk for “Better Call Saul.” He’s backed by 6 out of 19 savvy journos: Joyce Eng (Gold Derby), Matthew Jacobs (Huffington Post), Kelly Lawler (USA Today), Kaitlin Thomas (TVGuide.com), Ben Travers (IndieWire) and Susan Wloszczyna (Gold Derby). Are they right? Odenkirk is already a two-time Emmy winner as a variety writer for “Saturday Night Live...
