John Mulaney Presents Everybody’s in L.A. proved to be very much a late-night styled talk show in its live premiere Friday night on Netflix. Now like any good late night show, the six-episode miniseries is revealing its lineup for the coming week—and, as promised, it’s a doozy.
Leading things off tonight (and explaining this week’s Daily Show scheduling switcheroo) is none other than Jon Stewart. Stewart, like most of Mulaney’s guests this week, is in Los Angeles for the Netflix Is a Joke comedy festival. He performed over the weekend at L.A.’s Greek Theatre.
Other guests sitting down with Mulaney later in the week include Nate Bargatze, Sarah Silverman, David Letterman, Bill Hader, Rony Chieng, and Hannah Gadsby.
Each night also features a musical performace, with Warren G kicking things off tonight, followed by Joyce Manor, Weezer, Los Lobos, and Beck.

You know John Mulaney’s six-part comedy special is gonna be really star-studded when Netflix’s PR team writes, “There will be more guests as well but we are tired of listing them. We have given you enough information already,” in their pitch email.
On Tuesday, the streaming service announced a new cohort of celebrity guests — including musical ones such as Weezer, Los Lobos, St. Vincent, Flea, and Beck — that will join Mulaney during his Everyody’s in L.A. run of live shows early next month. Also making appearances...

Comedy constantly shifts and changes, and tenets that might have applied years ago are also on the move. Variety spoke to some comics about everything from social media to cancel culture to figure out the new rules of the comedy scene.

There are few shows on television quite like “Baby Reindeer.” The fact that Richard Gadd’s dramatic miniseries dropped on Netflix with little to no promotion makes it feel even more distinct.
Based on Gadd’s autobiographical one-man show of the same name, the seven-episode series follows Donny Dunn, an aspiring standup comedian and current bartender who makes the grave mistake of offering a woman a cup of tea on the house. That nice gesture upends his world, as “Baby Reindeer” chronicles one woman’s growing obsession with him, the complexities of both having a stalker and being flattered by her attention, and how Donny’s view of himself came to be so low. Both unflinchingly honest and at times bizarre, the series follows in the footsteps of art such as Michaela Coel’s “I May Destroy You,” Hannah Gadsby’s “Nannette” and Abby McEnany’s “Work in Progress.”

The TV landscape is still working through a hangover period in the wake of the Hollywood strikes, but you wouldn't know it from the deluge of comedy specials that have been released in 2024. Over the past few months, we've seen Jenny Slate tell a "weird love story in reverse" while describing her pregnancy in graphic detail, Ramy Youssef consider the burden of representation in HBO's More Feelings, and Hannah Gadsby take the fight to Netflix (while on Netflix) amid the ongoing Dave Chappelle controversy. While these sets run the gamut from profane to political, the best invite the audience to rethink their relationship to the world around them — all while being laugh-out-loud funny, of course.

A champion of complex comedic discourse and honest-to-God nuance, Hannah Gadsby both holds back and comes out swinging in their self-facilitated “Gender Agenda.”
The Australian comedian, now on their fourth stand-up special for Netflix, plays it mostly cool in the cheekily named genderqueer showcase — which started streaming on the platform Tuesday, March 5. It’s a consistently strong hour introducing seven less known queer and genderqueer performers from across the globe. Jes Tom, Chloe Petts, Asha Ward, DeAnne Smith, Mx. Dahlia Belle, Krishna Istha, and the mononymous Alok appear at London’s Alexandra Palace in that order.
Kept to roughly seven minutes each, the sharp and sensitive lineup explores everything from using they/them pronouns and attending straight weddings to seeking gender-affirming care and hooking up while taking hormones. It’s a potentially life-changing opportunity for both the comedians (only some of whom have been on Netflix before now) and curious subscribers,...

Ah, March. The month of madness. When the weather is so erratic, temperatures can shift 50 degrees within a matter of days. Presidential primaries and local elections rage on, spurring hot takes only the sickos want to read eight months ahead of November’s inevitable chaos. Awards season limps to a close, as the Oscars feel all but wrapped up a week before the ceremony, and yet there are still more trophies to be handed out after they’re over?
Sports, also, are happening.
The TV world must deal with its own brand of madness. March marks the unofficial start of Emmy season, as eight- and 10-episode seasons look to capitalize on a weekly release schedule that will end in May (the last month of eligibility and thus a peak for campaigning). Some shows want to get an early jump on availability, in case it takes a while for buzz to...

The two big original releases on Netflix this month are Spaceman and 3 Body Problem. In Spaceman, Adam Sandler plays an astronaut alone and far from home who desperately wants to fix things with his wife. When he discovers an enormous alien spider in the bowels of his ship, a conversation between the two gets underway, and Sandler has a chance to make some big changes. To be clear: this is not a comedy!
Meanwhile, new sci-fi series 3 Body Problem hails from Game of Thrones co-creators David Benioff and D. B. Weiss. Along with True Blood writer Alexander Woo, they’ve spun a tale that is set to blow your mind this March. Your mileage may vary, but it certainly looks interesting! And hey, we all love the show’s star, Benedict Wong.

When Hannah Gadsby entered a deal at Netflix in 2022 with the goal of broadening “a notoriously transphobic industry,” they set plans for a multi-comic special featuring genderqueer comics from around the globe. The Russell brothers had barely finished the signature routine of the act — a bit involving the boys dressed as immigrant servant girls that had traditionally left audiences in hysterics — before a soundtrack of boos filled the theater. They had crossed a line with their material, and now they were going to pay the price. The duo would essentially be banned from performing anywhere. They received death threats. Offers for gigs around the country were rescinded. Anti-defamation groups began organizing protests and threatening not just the Russells, but anyone who considered booking the brothers at all.

When it really wants to, Netflix does a great job at letting people know what TV shows it has to offer. Unfortunately, with the never-ending wave of new shows constantly arriving, high-profile creators on the creative roster, and shifts in the streaming wars and algorithms that can upend viewer attention at any moment, there always seem to be series that fall between the cracks.

If you thought the premiere of Sex Education‘s final season felt more like a spinoff or a backdoor pilot, you’re not alone! When the Netflix dramedy returns for its fourth go-around (all eight episodes are now available to stream), things have changed quite a great deal in Moordale. Maeve is in America, Otis and Eric are starting at a new college that feels more like a hippie cult or summer camp for horny teens, and Jean’s busy dealing with her new bundle of joy, Joy.
There’s a lot to dive into, so let’s do just that!

After four enlightening, entertaining and full-frontally filthy years of Sex Education, this Netflix teen drama is coming to an end with its fourth and final series, as the Moordale kids finish up their school years for good.
A lot has changed as we enter the new series. Moordale Secondary has closed down, scattering the student body we grew to love over the first three series far and wide, and Otis and Eric are starting at the unnervingly progressive wonderland that is Cavendish College, with a whole new set of classmates to get to know. Maeve is now studying in America, Otis’ mum Jean has just had a surprise new baby, and a few other Sex Education favourites are missing entirely.
Let’s take a look at the Sex Education series four cast, old and new:

Netflix has debuted the trailer for the fourth and final season of its hit coming-of-age series “Sex Education,” complete with the tagline, “Get your tissues ready, let’s finish together.”
The British comedy continues to follow the journey of teen sex therapist Otis Millburn (Asa Butterfield) and his friends as they attend a new school with an entirely different culture than they’re accustomed to, while Otis’s love interest Maeve (Emma Mackey) has moved to the United States for college. The eight-episode final season will release on Netflix on Sept. 21, with a supersized, 83-minute series finale.
The first scene of the trailer shows Otis and Maeve adjusting to the distance between them. When Maeve sends Otis a nude photo, Otis is unsure about sending one in return. Netflix wants fans of its British teen comedy Sex Education to “finish together” in the trailer for the show’s final season.
The two-and-a-half minute first look at the fourth season teases a busy farewell to the series, which helped catapult or bolster the careers of current and former stars, including Emma Mackey, Ncuti Gatwa, Simone Ashley and Asa Butterfield. Set to the Meat Loaf classic “I’d Do Anything for Love (But I Won’t Do That),” the trailer sees Butterfield’s Otis and Mackey’s Maeve grappling with the intricacies — including well-shot nudes — of a long distance relationship as she attends the prestigious U.S. school, Wallace University.
Gatwa’s Eric can also be seen realizing his anxieties over how he and Otis not being losers again may be overblown as he further embraces himself, and encourages other Moordale Secondary classmates to as well. And at home, Gillian Anderson...

Saying goodbye to Sex Education will not be easy.
Many TV shows stay on the air long past their expiration date, but Sex Education Season 4 looks to be the perfect place to end the Netflix comedy.
In the official trailer for the final season, we see storylines come to dramatic conclusions as everyone reacts differently to the events of the prior season.
Otis and Maeve are trying to make their relationship work long-distance, but distance is not the only thing getting in the way of their love story.
Otis is trying to help is mother, Jean, through a rough patch when she's spiraling because Jakub left town after learning the truth about the father of the baby.
But this is a trying time for Otis, too. He's enrolled at Cavendish College with a determination to do what makes him happy.

Based on Gold Derby’s odds, one of the absolute tightest 2023 Creative Arts Emmy races involves Best Variety Special Writing contenders Chris Rock and John Mulaney, both of whom have previously conquered the category and are now facing off for the first time ever. Having both pushed their comedy to new levels of boldness in their respective Netflix specials “Selective Outrage” and “Baby J,” they provide voters with a truly tough choice when it comes to honoring the most impressive writing of the year.
This contest is made even more interesting by the fact that Rock and Wanda Sykes (“I’m an Entertainer”) are competing against each other after jointly earning four writing nominations and one win for “The Chris Rock Show” over two decades ago. Also included in this lineup are the sketch comedy special “Would It Kill You to Laugh?” and the career retrospective “Carol Burnett: 90 Years of Laughter + Love....

While the past decade has brought an exponential rise in streaming services, none compare to Netflix’s catalog of stand-up specials. The streamer has become the go-to destination for the most popular comedians in the world. Its ubiquity has made watching stand-up easier than ever and helped launch comedy stars like John Mulaney, Hannah Gadsby and Ali Wong with high-profile specials.
But like the rest of its content, it can be hard navigating the field with so many great offerings. So if you’re in need of a laugh while scrolling through Netflix, here’s a list of some of the best stand-up comedy specials streaming right now.
John Mulaney: “Kid Gorgeous” (2018)
Every John Mulaney special has at least a few bits that will never leave your head but “Kid Gorgeous” is a collection of some of his best. This is the special that put Mulaney on the path of comedy culture domination.

Comedian Hannah Gadsby got famous for quitting comedy. But in their newest comedy special, titled Something Special, they do something they consider much more difficult: fall in love
The Australian comedian, who uses they/them pronouns, became a household name in 2019 after releasing their explosive and eye-opening special Nanette. A deconstructed comedy that was more primal scream and scathing rebuke of assault, homophobia, and trauma than a bucket of laughs, Nanette took Gadbsy from a comedian desperate to quit to a fan-favorite ready to explore what comedy and pain could look like together.

It might seem like Hannah Gadsby has toned things down. After dismantling stand-up itself with the comedy special Nanette and using the follow-up Douglas to tell another batch of raw and personal stories, their new outing Something Special delivers nothing but upbeat jokes in a conventionally structured hour. What’s more, it’s on Netflix, even though Gadsby criticized the streamer for its support of Dave Chappelle. Superficially, this smacks of selling out.

Comedian Hannah Gadsby is speaking up about the controversial ties the Sackler family has to their upcoming art show.
Gadsby, who uses they/them pronouns, co-creates the exhibit “It’s Pablo-matic: Picasso According to Hannah Gadsby” at the Brooklyn Museum, a show dedicated to unwrapping the complicated legacy of the artist. “I’m doing a show at the Brooklyn Museum. There’s one Sackler on the board [trustee emerita Elizabeth A. Sackler]. We vetted this. Apparently, they’ve separated their earning streams from the problematic one,” Gadsby told Variety. “I mean, take that with a grain of salt. Doesn’t matter what cultural institution you work with in America, you’re going to be working with billionaires and there’s not a billionaire on this planet that is not fucked up. It is just morally reprehensible.

Hannah Gadsby wins us over thanks to her amiable personality based on the following premise: we’re all doomed, so let’s have fun for the next hour.
Hannah Gadsby: Something Special
We aren’t going to say that good Hannah isn’t right, she obviously is. In this show she brings us up to date, plenty of irony, on the current affairs and social controversies … Everything told in a subtle, intelligent way, peppered with anecdotes about everyday life and the recent marriage of our hostess, who does not hesitate to dig into her personal issues and tell us about them.
Very fun and with a lot of undertone irony, with the cleverness of taking serious issues lightly and being serious about mundane matters.
It is part of the comedy and laughter strategy: to break mental schemes. Undoubtedly, Hannah Gadsby achieves this with her very particular style.

Baby J is back on the streets! Five years after the immense success of his special “Kid Gorgeous,” John Mulaney returned with his third Netflix comedy special “John Mulaney: Baby J” on April 25. Previously titled “From Scratch” during his comedy tour, the show provides insight into Mulaney’s high-profile, scandal-laden year. A public stint in rehab, a divorce announcement, and a surprise baby turned the comedy star into a tabloid talking point.
The 80-minute special provides further evidence of Mulaney’s considerable talent as a comedian. There’s no denying the man knows how to craft a joke and deliver a punch-line.
