Julie Powell, whose blog and book about cooking Julia Child recipes led to Amy Adams portraying her opposite Meryl Streep in the 2009 movie Julie & Julia, written and directed by Nora Ephron, has died. She was 49.
Powell died Wednesday of cardiac arrest at her home in Olivebridge, New York, her husband, Eric Powell, told The New York Times.
Streep was nominated for an Oscar for best actress her turn as Child in Columbia’s Julie & Julia, which was Ephron’s final movie (she died in June 2012). Chris Messina played Powell’s husband, while Stanley Tucci portrayed Child’s husband, Paul.
Powell, a native Texan, was a struggling writer living in Long Island City, New York, in 2002 when she set out to cook all 524 recipes in Child’s 1961 book Mastering the Art of French Cooking, Volume 1, in the space of a year.

Legend has it that one filet of sole with lemon and butter altered the path of Julia Child’s life. With one omelette, she set in motion a change of the kitchen culture in America. Julie Cohen and Betsy West’s mouthwatering Oscar-shortlisted documentary Julia (a highlight of the 20th edition of Doc NYC and executive produced by Oren Jacoby) implicitly gives credit to this fish and these hens, and explicitly to the woman who appreciated so much the culinary treasures they had to offer. Seen on camera praising Julia Child and giving great insight into the hidden world of French kitchens is her friend Danièle Delpeuch, personal chef to former French President François Mitterand.

Sony Pictures Classics has acquired the rights to a new Julia Child documentary from “Rbg” directors Julie Cohen and Betsy West.
The doc, tentatively titled “Julia,” will tell the story of the cookbook author and television superstar “who changed the way Americans think about food, television, and even about women,” according to the distributor.
It will draw upon never-before-seen archival footage, personal photos and food cinematography to trace Child’s life journey, from her struggles to publish her revolutionary 1961 book “Mastering the Art of French Cooking” (1961) to how a woman in her 50s found fame as an unlikely TV sensation.
Sony Classics will have worldwide rights to the doc, though domestic television broadcast rights will go to CNN Films.

There's an interesting situation on late night TV tonight that I can't recall ever seeing before; the same actor is on two shows in one night. Jada Pinkett Smith, who must be promoting her show "Hawthorne" although for the love of god I couldn't tell you why, is on both "Jimmy Fallon" and "Chelsea Lately." As a reasonable person who understands how TV works, I know that all of this is pre-taped and that means that one actor can appear on two shows in one night without somehow conquering the time-space continuum, but I also thought that actors had people to make sure that shit like that didn't happen. Either I was wrong or having a leading role on a TNT series about a take-no-shit nurse with commitment issues just doesn't pay enough for a top shelf publicist. Here's your Monday night TV:

Some critics may have taken potshots at James Cameron's screenplay for "Avatar," but it has earned a nomination from the Writers Guild of America, which announced nominations for the 2010 WGA Awards on Monday.
Cameron -- who was also nominated by the WGA for "Titanic," though that movie failed to earn a best screenplay Oscar nomination -- will compete for the honor with Scott Neustadter & Michael H. Weber, nominated for their fractured romance "(500) Days of Summer"; Jon Lucas & Scott Moore for breakout summer comedy "The Hangover"; Mark Boal for his Iraq War study, "The Hurt Locker"; and Joel Coen & Ethan Coen for their modern-day retelling of the story of Job, "A Serious Man."
In the adapted screenplay category, the nominees are "Crazy Heart," screenplay by Scott Cooper, based on the novel by Thomas Cobb; "Julie & Julia," which Nora Ephron adapted from two books, "Julie & Julia" by Julie Powell and "My Life in France,...
