– Focus Features has acquired the North American and select international rights to Jason Reitman’s “Tully.” Written by Diablo Cody, the comedy stars Charlize Theron, Mackenzie Davis, Mark Duplass and Ron Livingston.
“Tully” tells the story of Marlo (Theron), a mother of three who is gifted a night nanny by her brother (Duplass). Hesitant to the extravagance at first, Marlo comes to form a unique bond with the thoughtful, surprising, and sometimes challenging young nanny named Tully (Davis). In an age of mass shootings when the debate over gun control rages on, some recent films, such as Jessica Chastain’s new film “Miss Sloane” tackle the subject head on. Another new film “Sins of Our Youth” also explores this topic, capturing the intersection of gun culture and foolish adolescence. The film follows four teenagers who accidentally murder a younger boy while shooting off assault weapons recreationally, and the perilous decisions they make in the aftermath of the murder. In a moment of desperation and fear, the four teenagers drunkenly construct a plan reminiscent of a video-game plot, but it’s only a catalyst for more confusion and pain. Watch an exclusive clip from the film below.

The third season stars Rose McGowan, Chad Michael Murray, Sarah Roemer, Caitlyn Carmichael, Brandon Routh, Stacy Haiduk, Lexi Ainsworth, Bridger Zadina, Tristan Bankston, Sammi Hanratty, and Alexander Le Bas.

Often times celebrities are given rolling eyes when they become invested in a political movement, but their collective star power can make a major impact. On March 3 at the Ebell of Los Angeles, The American Foundation for Equal Rights staged a one-night-only reading, verbatim theatre style, of a play that was written by Academy-award winning screenwriter Dustin Lance Black (Milk) and directed by Rob Reiner (The Bucket List). The play was based on the transcripts from the Perry vs. Schwarzeneggger trial, which Afer filed with the district court to overturn Proposition 8, the bill preventing gay and lesbian couples from marrying in California.
Brad Pitt (Moneyball) read as Judge Vaughn Walker, prosecuting attorneys Theodore B. Olson and David Boies were played by Martin Sheen (West Wing) and George Clooney (The Descendants) respectively and defense attorney Charles J. Cooper was played Kevin Bacon (X-Men: First Class). The case featured two couples, a...

According to E! News, Pitt will play Prop 8 opposer U.S. District Chief Judge Vaughn R. Walker, and Clooney will play David Boies, an attorney who sought to overturn the highly publicized ban.

Making lists is not my favorite occupation. They inevitably inspire only reader complaints. Not once have I ever heard from a reader that my list was just fine, and they liked it. Yet an annual Best Ten list is apparently a statutory obligation for movie critics.
My best guess is that between six and ten of these movies won't be familiar. Those are the most useful titles for you, instead of an ordering of movies you already know all about.
One recent year I committed the outrage of listing 20 movies in alphabetical order. What an uproar! Here are my top 20 films, in order of approximate preference.
1. "A Separation"
This Iranian film won't open in Chicago until Jan. 27. It won the Golden Bear at Berlin and was just named the year's best foreign film by the New York Film Critics Circle. It is specifically Iranian, but I believe the more specific...

Chicago – Most movies about awkward teens feel like they’re mocking them as much as embracing them. I’m exhausted by the subgenre because of this fact — there’s a deep hypocrisy in so many of these movies that wants to make fun of their subjects and then tell you how bad it is to make fun of them. Imagine my surprise at the charming, wonderful, incredibly well-written “Terri,” recently released on Blu-ray and DVD. This is a hidden gem.
Blu-Ray Rating: 4.0/5.0
Terri Thompson (Jacob Wysocki) is awkward but not in the way that it’s usually presented in independent film. He’s a huge kid who has taken to skipping school and showing up in pajamas when he does come to class. He is a gentle soul but he’s presented as such a fully-rounded, believable person. He’s not the creation of an independent film screenwriter. He’s smart,...

I believe the only people who truly enjoyed high school are those who breezed through the experience. For the rest of us, those four (or more) years of high school falls somewhere on a sliding scale of misery ranging from an annoying itch to a torturous punishment inflicted by the worst kind of mad scientist.
Stereotypes are common in films about teenagers, especially when set against the backdrop of high school. The truth is, teenagers and stereotypes go hand-in-hand. Without teenagers, there would be no stereotypes, but the burnouts, jocks and preppies of the .80s no longer apply in the new millennium. No, the typical characters of the John Hughes era have evolved along a parallel plane into some not better or worse, but different.
Director Azazel Jacobs (Momma.S Man, The Good Times Kids) delves into the strange world of the high school outsider with Terri, written by first-timer Patrick Dewitt.

Chicago – Nothing says “Official Selection at Sundance” quite like an obese teen grappling with an angst-ridden existence. There have been countless pictures centering on young, plus-size protagonists, though few feel three-dimensional. Tracy Turnblad and Claireece Precious Jones aren’t people so much as they are symbols of survival in the face of adversity. It’s easy to root for them, but it’s more than a little difficult to believe in them.
Rating: 3.5/5.0
I believed in Terri, the 15-year-old star of Azazel Jacobs’s perceptive new film, simply because he’s a great deal like a lot of the kids I knew in high school. When asked how he feels, Terri draws a picture of a face with a straight horizontal line for a mouth. The expression is neither happy nor sad. It’s simply beaten into submission by the daily hell of adolescence. Terri has no desire to pity...

Azazel Jacobs has an acute eye for houses that, without ever crumbling the low-key naturalism of his narratives, can mutate from mere settings to mysterious visualizations of the characters’ often bemused emotional states. The old Manhattan loft in Momma’s Man is by turns a found-object mausoleum, a womb, and a cavernous penitentiary, its bric-a-brac simultaneously cocooning and stifling the stranded protagonist. Terri has some of that densely expressive clutter in the cramped Californian cabin the eponymous teen loner (Jacob Wysocki) shares with his ailing uncle (Creed Bratton), a jumble of bookshelves, bulky TV sets and wooded passageways that give tangible shape to the younger man’s withdrawn nature as well as to the older man’s addled melancholy. (In the attic directly above Terri’s bed, mousetraps snap in the middle of the night like tiny twitches in a softly anxious psyche.) But where the outside world in Momma...

Have you ever felt like you didn't belong in high school? Or no one really understood where you were coming from? You are not alone - you have Terri!
Terri is an overweight, suffering, weird, loner who seems to want to spend time with himself - all the time. He has some problems at home, namely an uncle suffering from an early form of dementia, and he is constantly teased and ridiculed at school. I mean, the kid wears matching pajamas everyday - he's kind of asking for it. But that's not the point!
Terri provides a kind of existential look at the outcasts and what it means to be an outcast in a world where people crave popularity and acceptance.
The teens luck seems to start to change when the assistant principal, played with precision by John C. Reilly, takes a liking to the misfits in the school (including...

Terri sounds like a potentially unwatchable splicing together of two different kinds of movies: a Larry Clark cavalcade of teenagers with body issues and volatile hormones meets an uplifting crowd pleaser. The characters are stigmatized and/or isolated by their physical appearance and externalized mental problems. But having tackled the not-at-all funny topic of a grown man too paralyzed by a nameless fear to leave his parents' home in Momma's Man, director Azazel Jacobs has the appropriate slow rhythms and non-saccharine instincts to render unpleasant, difficult life moments in a tough-but-compassionate way.
At the forefront is awkwardly hulking Terri (Jacob Wysocki), an ungainly teen boy made daily sport of because of his size, whose best friend—seemingly by default—is obscenity-spouting Jd Chad (Bridger Zadina), who obsessively tears his hair out by the roots while waiting for his many disciplinary meetings, leaving a nasty bald streak on his head.
Title: Terri Directed By: Azazel Jacobs Starring: Jacob Wysocki, John C. Reilly, Bridger Zadina, Olivia Crocicchia, Creed Bratton With so many quirky coming-of-age movies out there, not only is establishing a unique and engaging lead character vital, but the same goes for the general tone of the film, too. While Terri does make use of some of the standard genre conventions, it packs so many innovative broad strokes and tiny details, it rises above the usual shtick, becoming something that makes an impact for all the right reasons. Terri’s (Jacob Wysocki) got it rough; he’s an overweight teen who’s been abandoned by his parents, must take care of his ailing...

Sometimes it’s not the premise that’s enthralling but the characters and how they evolve in a simple, nicely told story. In Azazel Jacobs‘ follow up to his 2008 Sundance hit Momma’s Man, a shy, obese, socially removed student (the Terri of the title), who lives in a warm, derelict house with his only caring relative and walks into class everyday in his pajamas, is befriended by his high-school assistant principal. Mr Fitzgerald, you see, has a habit for nurturing underachieving outcasts by scheduling weekly heart-to-heart meetings in his office.
John C Reilly is on hilarious (dare I say it) career best form as the kind of teacher you always wanted your teacher to be – kind-hearted, cool-headed, down to earth but ultimately flawed like the rest of us. He relates to Terri’s tardiness and strange behaviour (Terri has a penchant for rat catching too!

After getting a lot of attention at Sundance this year, Terri is coming your way, and I'm really hoping this is one that won't get lost in the shuffle leading into the big summer titles. If nothing else, I can't remember a film with John C. Reilly that wasn't well worth the time, but beyond that, this one has a lot of positive reviews.
Take a look at the new poster, a slew of images, and the trailer. I think you're going to want to make sure you get to this one.

At long last, some of the smaller films Sundance and SXSW are beginning to trickle out with trailers and release dates for those of us unlucky enough to have stayed home and missed all the fun.
One of these is the dramedy "Terri," which stars John C. Reilly, Jacob Wysocki, Creed Bratton, Bridger Zadina and Olivia Crocicchia.
"Terri" centers on a overweight teenager (Wysocki) who lives with his sick uncle (Bratton) and is singled out by his school for his awkward and nonconforming behavior. But Mr. Fitzgerald (Reilly) takes a special interest in him, and helps him realize that being associated with the other social outcasts can actually be better than being alone. The fact that the other "losers" happen to be bad girls (Zadina and Crocicchia) who take Terri into their confidence undoubtedly helps. Eventually, Terri becomes a little more accepted and a lot more comfortable in his skin.

One of the films I was most looking forward to at Sundance this year was Azazel Jacobs‘ coming-of-age comedy/drama Terri. While it has a few great scenes, I was underwhelmed with the dry tone. It was light on satisfying comedy and drama, when I expected at least one to show through. Talking with a few others, the reaction seemed to be divisive and I encourage you to check it out for yourself. We now have the first trailer for the film starring Jacob Wysocki, John C. Reilly, Creed Bratton, Olivia Crocicchia, and Bridger Zadina. See it below via Apple and check out our Sundance video review here.

Hollywoodnews.com: We have a little bit of time to process the extensive South By Southwest film line up, which was unveiled by festival programmers earlier this week. This year’s event, scheduled to take over beautiful Austin, Texas from March 11 to 19, will showcase 130 features including 60 world premieres, 12 North American premieres and 16 U.S. premieres.
“SXSW prides itself on taking chances, sifting for films that are the seedlings of the next generation of must-see artists,” said Film Conference and Festival Producer Janet Pierson. “This year’s line up is full of emerging voices and filmmakers who transcended the resources they had on hand, often with an alchemist’s touch.”

The South by Southwest Film Festival announced its feature film line-up Wednesday, piling heaps of cinematic goodness on an already stellar program that includes Jodie Foster’s The Beaver, Duncan Jones’ Source Code, Ti West’s The Innkeepers, Conan O’Brien’s tour documentary, and the latest Simon Pegg-Nick Frost comedy, Paul, with Seth Rogen.
Catherine Hardwicke (Twilight) returns to the festival with her latest film, Red Riding Hood starring Amanda Seyfried, after the writer-director spoke on a screenwriting panel in 2009.
Plus a few favorites from the Sundance Film Festival last month, like Tom McCarthy’s Win Win, Morgan Spurlock’s The Greatest Movie Ever Sold, and Max Winkler’s Ceremony.
I’m extremely excited, even if I’m already having flashbacks to intense sleep deprivation. Like the last two years, I’ll be on the ground covering as much of the festival as I can within the packed 9 days of screenings,...

It has been another great year of film. I still have but seven movies left to watch before I complete my “Best of the Year List” but we are already looking towards 2011.
The 57 feature films selected for the four competition programs of the 2011 Sundance Film Festival were announced today, and the titles include some exciting works from returning filmmakers. While the lineup isn’t has loaded with big names it does feature the return of James Marsh whose documentary Man on Wire won the Grand Jury Prize at the fest in 2008. Some interesting movies we should mention that appear on the list are Mike Cahill’s Another Earth, Carlos Moreno’s All Our Dead One (Todos Tus Muertos), Anne Sewitsky’s sexual drama Happy, Happy (Sykt Lykkelig) Rashaad Ernesto Green‘s Gun Hill Road, Sean Durkin‘s Martha Marcy May Marlene, Andrew Okpeaha MacLean‘s On the Ice, Dee Rees...
