“American Idol” marked its 20th birthday on Monday night with “The Great Idol Reunion,” a one-hour special featuring past “Idol” contestants and judges and celebrating the show’s history, both during its years on Fox and its current home on ABC.
“Tonight we are opening the Idol yearbook,” said host Ryan Seacrest as he revealed the “Idol” VIP area, which included such familiar faces as Tamyra Gray, Pia Toscano, Anthony Federov, Brooke White, Justin Guarini, William Hung, and Seacrest’s unforgettable frosted hair.
Wasting no time getting to Hung, whose name is “synonymous with ‘American Idol,'” noted Seacrest, he returned to the stage to reprise his epic Ricky Martin performance of “She Bangs” as former judges Paula Abdul and Randy Jackson felt right at home alongside the current panel of Katy Perry, Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie.
In classic Abdul form, she kicked into Paula-speak, which fans surely fondly remember.

"How long you guys been together, anyway?" Gravitas Ventures has debuted an official trailer for a holiday romantic comedy titled Funny Thing About Love, from filmmaker Adam White. "We really feel that what the world, and America in particular, needs this Holiday season is a feel-good, witty rom-com." A successful business woman takes her boyfriend home for Thanksgiving only to find her family is scheming to reunite her with her lost love, her other "one that got away." Summer Bellessa stars as Samantha, with a cast including Jon Heder, Barry Corbin, Pat Finn, Jason Gray, and Brooke White. This one belongs on the Hallmark channel, not in any theater. Another painfully obvious, been-there-done-that romcom to skip. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Adam White's Funny Thing About Love, from YouTube: Samantha Banks (Summer Bellessa) is on top of the world, a successful business, and a handsome fiancé. But over...

Our American Idol “journey” has come to an end, but let us not weep for what’s been cancelled, let us instead go to iTunes and download the Season 15 winner’s new single. Hey, from a songwriting vantage point, it may not be “Home,” but it definitely ranks above “No Boundaries” and “Inside Your Heaven” — and we bought those, too. And if this show can produce one more bona fide radio/touring superstar, maybe the inevitable reboot will happen sooner than expected, no?

Season 10 of American Idol. Top 4 results night. May 12, 2011.
I remember it vividly, joyfully — but not just because the exceptional Haley Reinhart (who’d been enduring egregious sabotage from judges Jennifer Lopez and Randy Jackson) improbably survived over rocker dude James Durbin. Mostly, the date is blazed into my memory because of a surprise delivery I’d received a few hours earlier from the New Jersey State Division of Youth and Family Services: Three-month-old foster twins, ridiculously cute boys whom my husband and I had only learned about earlier that morning.

We're down to six on "American Idol" and the singers are doing double-duty on Wednesday (April 23) night. Alex, Jena, Caleb, Cj, Jessica and Sam will each sing one song dubbed "Country" and another song deemed "Rock." Two quick thoughts: 1) Dexter Roberts picked the wrong week to go home. If ever a theme would have helped ease Dexter along in his "Idol" genre, this would have been it. 2) For all of the Judges' Save thing, this week's theme seems to doom Sam Woolf, doesn't it? I continue to suspect that Jena, Caleb and Alex are in their own voting class. And of the remaining three singers, who can pretty much go home in any order as far as I'm concerned, two of them can be comfortably classed in a country-rock niche and the other one is Sam Woolf. Either we're about to see some impressive theme cheating from Sam, or else he's doomed before he begins.

The American Idol Judges’ Save is kind of like that panini press in the back of your pantry. It seemed pretty nifty when you got it back in 2009, but you’ve ended up using it only once every 12 months, and now you’re like, “Is it time to put this contraption out on the front stoop and hope somebody takes it off my hands?”
Of course, once you get the thing out and dust it off, you think, “Oooh, I might have a little hunk of gruyere in the cheese drawer. Maybe I should make me a sammie.”

Are we locked in? Ready? American Idol's twelfth season is about to launch into its most awesome (and stressful, if you're me) section -- the Top 40 shakedown and the mega blitz of eliminations that we, the mean home viewers, get to decide. It's do or die for your weird personal favorites: That chick with the dreadlocks and beads who sings Donny Hathaway? She might be deported back to Birkenstock Island. That closeted homosexual with the Manilow confidence? Randy Jackson might decapitate him. Ahhh! Gay carnage.
Now that the winning 40 guys and girls of Season 12 have been announced, let's take a look back at the auditions we liked most. I've ranked them because I'm compulsive about this sort of thing.

Gift wrapping at the holidays is a wonderful service. But how much more awesome would it be if your gift-wrapping was done by one of the former contestants on "American Idol"? People shopping in Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, Dallas and Atlanta this year may have found that out.
These photos come from the gift-wrapping event held at the Beverly Center in Los Angeles on Tuesday (Dec. 18) and from a mall in Westchester, New York on Wednesday (Dec. 19). Manny Streetz, Michael Rippe, Brooke White (from "Idol" season 7) and Lexi Shaw wrapped the presents in California, while season 4's Anthony Fedorov led the gift-wrapping station in New York.
Those lucky shoppers who got their presents wrapped by TV people also received the gift of "American Idol"-themed wrapping paper. The gift-wrapping itself was free, but the stunt was meant to bring in donations to provide relief for those affected by hurricane Sandy.

Jordin Sparks isn't the first "American Idol" star to step away from the reality boob tube and give Hollywood a go, and she won't be the last. Her loosely biographical movie "Sparkle" — also featuring the late Whitney Houston, Mike Epps and Cee-Lo Green — is but the latest instance of an "Idol" star getting a close-up on the big screen.

There’s this weird part of the week — from Friday morning till Monday evening — when not a single major TV network airs a reality singing competition. It’s terrible, I know, but it also gives me a lot of time to ponder American Idol history. (Everyone does this in their free time, yes?) And my latest flight of Idol fancy got me mulling this question: Was Season 11′s Top 10 the strongest — top to bottom — in show history? Let’s examine:
For starters, I’d automatically rule out the five seasons with three or more Top 10 contestants who probably wouldn’t have outlasted Season 11′s No.

Being a solo artist “was becoming a lonely operation for me,” Brooke White confides to the Hollywood Reporter. "This was the easiest, happiest transition that could have happened for me." The American Idol season seven finalist is referring to her musical partnership with Jack Matranga, the man who started off as a songwriting collaborator for her next album and turned into the other half of the duo Jack and White, but you could easily apply the sentiment to other momentous events in her life: like the fact that she's expecting her first child, a girl, in May. Carole King is the call for the "American Idol" Top 6 theme night. We are trepidatious - not because we don't love Carole King. We do, quite a bit. "Tapestry" is an incredible album. But a night of Carole King with this bunch of Idols? Hmm. Where's Brooke White when we need her?
Um, why does Randy look like Eugene from "Grease"? Babyface is here as the mentor. Wow, that's a big name, very cool.
Update: After watching the night, I take back my trepidations. This was actually a great "Idol" night, overall. Here are our rankings from best to worst:
1. Scotty McCreery, "You've Got a Friend"
Jimmy Iovine and Babyface are trying to work on Scotty being smoother and a little more interesting and subtle with his vocals. Yes, definitely something for him to work on. He starts singing and ... this is gorgeous. Perfect choice. He is having some absolutely...

The theme for the "American Idol" Top 6 contestants was announced Thursday night (April 21) at the end of the results show - it's Carole King, which should prove interesting.
King is a Grammy-winning singer/songwriter and we are big fans of her music. "Tapestry" is really her watershed effort - the 1971 album was named No. 36 on Rolling Stone's list of the 500 greatest Albums of All Time.
But we aren't sure how the Idols are going to handle her music. Katelyn Epperly covered "I Feel the Earth" move in Season 9 and got pans from the judges, then was sent packing. Brooke White took on "You've Got a Friend" in Season 7 and did very well, but Carole King is right in Brooke White's wheelhouse. King's songs are quietly great and kind of niche - this year's Idols are going to have to really make them their own or it's going to be a long night.

From James Durbin’s militaristic take on Muse’s “Uprising” to Jacob Lusk’s shaky start with Luther Vandross’ “Dance with My Father,” once again, American Idol vocal coach and arranger Debra Byrd and associate music director and arranger Michael Orland are here to give their peerless insights into the Idol Top 7′s attempt at 21st century music. The first signs of mutiny aboard the U.S.S. American Idol surfaced during Wednesday night’s Top 8 performance telecast, and not a moment too soon. As the Season 10 contestants tackled “Songs from the Movies,” James Durbin and Casey Abrams stood up and said “no” to Interscope chairman Jimmy Iovine and his wacky cartoon sidekick, choosing instead to forge their own imperfect paths in the competition. Whether or not their singular visions were successful, or whether they’ll lead to quick exits or carry them all the way to the Nokia at the end of May, is almost irrelevant at this point.

Zap2it has been looking back at the best performances from each stage of the "American Idol" finals and now we're taking a gander at the Top 8. This week on "Idol," the contestants are gearing up for Songs from the Movies as the theme, but what about the past performances at Top 8?
This collection of Top 8 might be the best single phase of the competition yet, even including how unkind the themes of Queen and Latin were on seasons 5 and 6, respectively.
Who are you favorites? Vote below. As of this writing, you've voted Carrie Underwood's "Alone" as the best Top 11 performance, David Cook's "Billie Jean" as the best Top 10 performance and David Archuleta's "Smoky Mountain Memories" as the best Top 9 performance.
Which one will win Top 8? We sense a dogfight coming on between Kelly, Fantasia and Glambert, and that doesn't even account for how great Constantine Maroulis,...

The Season 10 "American Idol" contestants are about to take the stage for their Top 10 week (on Elton John songs!), so we're going to look back at the best past Top 10 performances. Not the Top 10 of all time, but performances that happened during the Top 10, much like last week's Top 11 rewind.
We realize that Season 10 is still at Top 11 because of the save, but since they're going to immediately skip to Top 9 next week, we're doing a Top 10 rewind anyway. We wouldn't want to miss out on such great performances.
So who do you like? Vote in our poll below. While certain more recent Idols are fresh in our memories, can you believe how awesome Kimberley Locke was on "I Can't Make You Love Me"? We think we've picked the cream of the Top 10 crop here. Let us know what you think in the poll and the comments.

After last night's guys, three of which we think are definitely safe, "American Idol" brings us the girls. Let's get right to it, shall we?
Seacrest welcomes us again and the strange voice man introduces the judges. J.Lo has come as a disco ball, Randy has on a Cosby sweater and Steven Tyler is wearing the same thing from last night. He probably just slept backstage and rolled out for "Idol." (Yes, I know this is pre-taped, it's a joke, don't email me).
When the women are introduced, I am struck by just how much Asthton/Tatynisa, Julie/Pia and Haley/Kendra are the same person. Seriously, it's like Doppelgangland up in here. But let's get to the singing.
Here are the Top 12 performances, in our order of best to worst:
Definitely Advancing:
1. Pia Toscano: "I'll Stand By You" by the Pretenders
This is a great song choice for her.

The "American Idol" Top 24 is here! Fans, get your voting fingers ready. Before the guys take the stage Tuesday night (March 1), Zap2it thought we should offer some of our picks and predictions from our very own Tierney Bricker and Andrea Reiher.
Favorite Guy
Tierney: Paul McDonald. I don't know why producers decided to hide Paul in the "Idol" dungeon throughout the audition process, but I guess I should just be grateful they eventually let him out, right? Paul has worked his way through, not relying on a sob story or crazy antics -- just his unique (so overused, but true here) and distinctive voice. I don't think there's ever been a contestant more prepared for the "Idol" machine -- and fame in general -- than Paul.
Andrea: Scotty McCreery. Talk about a true downhome, old-school country voice. Plus, this year they are supposedly not going to be shoe-horning the Idols into various genres.

The Season 10 premiere of"American Idol" is less than a week away and to make the days go by a bit faster, Zap2it decided to take a stroll down memory lane and re-evaluate the previous nine seasons.
Each day leading up to the premiere on Wednesday, Jan. 19, we will post a retrospective on each season. We're breaking it down into four categories: Best Performance, Worst Performance, Most Underrated Idol and most Overrated Idol. At the end, we will decide how the season stacks up against the rest, rating it as great, good, or not-so-good.
We've looked back at Season 1 (yay Kelly!), Season 2 (aww, Clay and Ruben!), the black hole that was Season 3, one of our favorite Top 2 in Season 4, and Soul Patrol-ed Season 5. Yesterday, we took a look back at beatboxin' Season 6 and now, it's time to revisit The Battle of the Davids that was Season 7.

The TV movie Change of Plans, which was presented by Walmart and Procter & Gamble on Fox last night, opened fittingly, when you consider it stars an American Idol alum: The first few moments capture an ebullient Brooke White — playing aspiring musician Sally Danville — on stage, strumming her guitar with a heavy dose of passion and singing at the top of her lungs. And you know what? As saccharine as it was, the song wasn’t half bad. I’d blast it in my car on a nice summer night for a good time. But then again, it’s no secret...

"American Idol" Season 7 finalist Brooke White is trying her hand at a new artistic endeavor -- acting. The songstress stars in the Fox made-for-tv movie "Change of Plans," also starring Joe Flanigan and Phylicia Rashad. White plays Sally Danville, a performer who is suddenly thrust into raising four children with her husband Jason (Flanigan).
The title of the movie is "actually quite perfect" as a parallel for this new turn Brooke's career has taken, the blonde singer says.
"It was not something I was anticipating. I wasn't sure if acting was something I wanted to do, I wasn't out auditioning or anything like that," says White. "My first day on set I was hyperventilating a little bit. [laughs]. But after a week of shooting I completely fell in love with it."
Even though the movie is Brooke's first foray into acting, she didn't have much time to prepare, which she thinks...

Singer Brooke White came in fifth on American Idol in its seventh season and released the album High Hopes & Heartbreaks with Idol judge and producer Randy Jackson in 2009. So when Jackson came calling again last year with another project, she jumped in and realized later that the title would say it all. White, 26, makes her acting debut in Change of Plans, airing on Saturday (8 p.m. Et) on Fox. She plays Sally Danville, a devil-may-care musician whose life changes with a phone call. "The theme of the movie," she tells People, "is unexpected things come into your life, and those unexpected things are the best.

Brooke White has joked that American Idol hopefuls should avoid Googling their own names while competing on the show. The singer-songwriter, who appeared on the seventh season of the show, was asked if she had advice for the new contestants during a press call to promote the Fox movie Change Of Plans. "I'll keep it short and simple - don't Google your own name!" she responded. "Be you, don't Google, work hard and have fun!" The 27-year-old went on to note that the competition gives contestants a "massive advantage" in their careers because it allows them to establish a "great connection" with the audience. "We're really presented to the people not just as singers but as people, which I think gives us a great connection," she explained. "When you're in people's living rooms week (more)...

Brooke White has revealed that she was "bitten by the acting bug" during her debut performance in the upcoming TV movie Change Of Plans. The musician, who appeared in the seventh season of American Idol, stars in the fourth offering in the P&G/Walmart 'Family Movie Night' initiative this Saturday. The storyline revolves around a singer-songwriter called Sally (White) who is thrust into parenting alongside her husband Jason (Joe Flanigan) after her best friend passes away and she is named the legal guardian of her four children. Brooke White first came to Randy Jackson’s attention when she auditioned for “American Idol” in 2008. She made it into the finals, eventually bowing out in 5th place. However, Jackson was impressed enough by her talent that he continued to work with her.
Their latest project together was recording songs for a made-for-tv movie called “Change Of Plans,” and White’s plans definitely changed after she was talked into auditioning for the lead role — and won it!
Fox All Access host Chris Leary went to Jackson’s Hollywood recording studio to talk with the pair about the movie, find out more about how White’s acting debut came to be, and even engage in a little “Idol” chatter.
“Change of Plans” airs on Fox this Saturday at 8/7 Central.
