Sydney – Monday 6 November, 2023. The Sydney Opera House today announced two electrifying contemporary music events over summer with genre-raiding psych-rockers Unknown Mortal Orchestra making their Concert Hall debut on January 30, and alternative R&b star Steve Lacy performing two shows in-the-round on 31 January and 1 February 2024.
Unknown Mortal Orchestra’s (Umo) appearance follows the March release of their definitive fifth album, V – an exquisite collection of songs that evokes the 70s rock and 80s pop of frontman Ruban Nielson’s childhood, while exploring love, loss and his Hawaiian heritage. The album makes a strong case for itself as his sun-bleached masterpiece, earning a 4.5 star review from Uncut and a place on The Guardian’s ‘best albums of 2023 so far’ list.
Umo initially achieved runaway success following the covert release of an anonymously penned track, ‘Ffunny Ffriends’, on Band Camp (2011). They’d go on to release five albums over the next 12 years, each...

Liam Payne‘s most recent music video for his single, “Bedroom Floor,” is one to remember – and not just because of its catchy beat; the song’s video features Bella Thorne, who portrays a girl dealing with a flaky boyfriend.
Payne is hardly the first singer to feature another celeb in his music video. Some are particularly iconic – think Liv Tyler and Alicia Silverstone in Aerosmith’s “Crazy,” or Lena Dunham, Cindy Crawford and more in Taylor Swift’s “Bad Blood” – but there are a bunch we bet you forgot about:

“Neo Yokio is the greatest city in the world. It is a diverse labyrinth of cultural and architectural innovation. Of course, whenever a city becomes the envy of the world, problems are bound to arise.”
Netflix has released the first trailer for their new six-episode anime series Neo Yokio. The series was created and written by Ezra Koenig (Vampire Weekend) along with writer and producer Nick Weidenfeld. The series also features a very interesting voice cast that includes Jaden Smith, Jude Law, Susan Sarandon, and Jason Schwartzman.
If Wes Anderson made an anime, this is how it might turn out. It has a slightly similar tone and vibe as his films do and then, of course, there's the addition of Jason Schwartzman. It looks like an interesting and fun anime about a young demon slayer. I'll watch it! Here's a description of the story:

Vampire Weekend’s music has always straddled a line between squeaky-clean yacht rock and the broader influences of the band members’ multiethnic backgrounds. In that regard, it comes as little surprise that frontman Ezra Koenig’s new foray into television would offer a similar sort of sociocultural pastiche: “Neo Yokio,” a six part animated series for Netflix whose trailer premiered Thursday, evidently draws upon classic anime, English literature and contemporary New York culture.

Vampire Weekend's Ezra Koenig is bringing a new anime series called Neo Yokio to Netflix this month. Here's the trailer...
What a time to be alive.
Netflix just dropped a trailer for an anime original series from Vampire Weekend's Ezra Koenig starring Jaden Smith, Steve Buscemi, Jude Law, Susan Sarandon, Desus and Mero, Jason Schwartzman and Tavi Gevinson, amongst others.
From the looks of the trailer, Neo Yokio is part-satire, part homage (a la Hot Fuzz), a series that aims to send-up many of anime's most ubiquitous tropes, while also paying tribute to them.
Neo Yokio, a play off of the 'New Tokyo' setting in anime classic Akira, is "a postmodern collage of homages to classic anime, English literature and modern New York fashion and culture." It follows the adventures of Jaden Smith's Kaz Kaan, a broken-hearted, pink-haired demon slayer who cares more about shopping,...

After rocking the mic in Netflix’s “The Get Down,” Jaden Smith is returning to the streaming giant — in pink-haired, animated form.
Today, Netflix announced “Neo Yokio,” a new original series created by Vampire Weekend’s Ezra Koenig and featuring a voice cast starring Smith, Susan Sarandon, Jude Law, Tavi Gevinson, Jason Schwartzman, and Desus & Mero. Additional members of the voice cast include: Richard Ayoade, Ike Barinholtz, Steve Buscemi, Alexa Chung, Stephen Fry, Katy Mixon, Annet Mahendru, Kiernan Shipka, Willow Smith, and Amandla Stenberg.
According to a release from Netfilx, “the series is a postmodern collage of homages to classic anime, English literature and modern New York fashion and culture.” Set in the ultra-modern city of Neo Yokio, the show focuses on young Kaz (Smith) as he deals with both teenage heartbreak, the legacy of his demon slayer family, and the danger that might be threatening Neo Yokio.

Jim Jarmusch hasn’t shared any news about his next film project, but the writer-director of 2016’s “Paterson” recently released some new original music from his rock band, Sqürl. The group’s fourth mini-album, “Ep #260,” features five songs, only one of which includes vocals – “Gates of Ishtar.” The heavily instrumental music sounds a lot like a film score, which makes sense considering Sqürl first came together to compose the soundtrack for Jarmusch’s 2009 crime-drama “The Limits of Control.” The band’s first name was Bad Rabbit.

Known for crafting infectious club-bumping pop numbers, UK songstress Charli Xcx shows off her eclectic side by lending her vocals to a remix of Jim-e Stack’s latest single, “Deadstream.” Premiering on Beats 1, the remix is a collaboration with former Vampire Weekend member Rostam Batmanglij, and the combination of the two results in something that’s worth much more than just a couple of listens.
Charli Xcx’s vocals instantly help make the electronic track more accessible, but it doesn’t overdo it. Meanwhile, Rostam’s vocals kick in to bring the down the song’s blood pressure, and it isn’t until the two voices combine that we witness “Deadstream” at its apex. Though the track is atmospheric in nature, this new version brings it back down to Earth in all of the best ways.

Hey, music fans and friends, it's time once again to share my favorite music from 2015.
The songs on my year-end list are not what I consider true "singles" but rather my favorite 25 songs from 2015. I've not heard all the amazing music released this past year, but I do consume a healthy dose of tunes every single day. Below are 13 of those songs with Youtube links if you can't access my Spotify list. Let's proceed, shall we?
1. "Chateau Lobby #4 (in C for Two Virgins)" - Father John Misty - I Love You Honeybear
Former Fleet Foxes drummer Josh Tillman has quickly become my favorite young singer-songwriter. His detail to imagery in both audio and album artwork have very few peers, too. (See image above.)
2. "Rose Mary y Yo" - Carlos Timón - Solar Rapé
Some have said, me included, that this music spins like a Spanish version of Belle & Sebastian meets Jobim!

Carly Rae Jepsen just dropped a new disc, "Emotion," that has our fourm posters, many of whom are music insiders, buzzing. They think that this album, her third, could be the charm that wins over Grammy voters. Jepsen contended at music's top awards in 2013 for her smash hit "Call Me Maybe." The singer/songwriter lost Best Pop Solo Performance to Adele ("Set Fire to the Rain") and Song of the Year to the quartet that crafted "We Are Young" for Fun. Check out a sample of what our posters have to say below and then jump into the debate, if you dare, Here. -Break- Longoria: She's doing what Taylor Swift wanted (but failed) to do by creating a throwback 80's Pop album. I can't stop listening to the seven songs she's released via her Vevo page but "Warm Blood" co-written and produced by Vampire Weekend's Rostam Batmanglij is my absolute favorite right now.

But turns out, the Parks and Recreation stunner was quite the heartbreaker as a teen and later revoked the "Blurred Lines" singer's invitation so she could attend the dance with another...

We may not have enjoyed our time visiting “Paper Towns” – read our review here – but that doesn’t mean we can’t appreciate the film’s soundtrack. While we’ve already discussed the official soundtrack release, now that the film is out, check out all the music. Director Jake Schreier and music supervisor Season Kent were able to fill the one hour and fifty-three minute long movie with twenty odd tracks. Some of the bands and artists used in the final film but left off of the official soundtrack release were, Bob Dylan, Bon Iver and the collaboration of Billy Bragg & Wilco. “Paper Towns” is out now in a theater near you and the official soundtrack is available at all retailers. Check out the full list used in the John Green-adaptation, below. Swingin Party - Kindness Moments - De Lux Must Be Santa - Bob Dylan Taxi Cab -...

Nat Wolff and Cara Delevigne are being positioned as the future faces of Hollywood. The former has a strong following already and was rumored for a while to play Marvel's Spider-Man, while the latter has already bagged herself a superhero role in "Suicide Squad." And this summer they'll both get plenty of opportunity to show what they're made of with starring roles in "Paper Towns." Read More: 'Paper Towns' Soundtrack Features Haim, Vampire Weekend, The War On Drugs, Santigold, The Mountain Goats And More The film, based on a book by "The Fault In Our Stars" author John Green, tells the story of Quentin, who befriends Margo, only for her to vanish into thin air. What follows is a mystery, adventure, and coming-of-age story that will change his life. So something a little different than the usual explosion filled popcorn spectacle we expect from major studios in the middle of summer.

Ya love and adventure come to the big screen this summer in "Paper Towns," and paired up with it is a soundtrack that appropriately enough features a slew of hot bands of the moment. So get your headphones ready, because this is a pretty solid mix of tunes. Spanning sixteen tracks, you can't throw a rock without hitting a band that's either critic approved, festival ready, boasts a huge following, or all three. Sister act Haim, collegiate artistes Vampire Weekend, riff heavy The War On The Drugs, scrappy The Mountain Goats and dance floor ready Santigold are among the highlights. And even the film's star Nat Wolff contributes "Look Outside" alongside Alex Wolff. Read More: 'Furious 7' Soundtrack Includes Wiz Khalifa, Iggy Azalea, Skylar Grey, T.I., Mos Def & More "Paper Towns" hits theaters on July 24th with the soundtrack dropping on July 10th. The New Girlfriend
Written & Directed by François Ozon
France, 2014
The latest from prolific French auteur François Ozon opens on a somber note as Claire (Anaïs Demoustier) recounts her lifelong friendship with the deceased Laura (Isild Le Besco), whose untimely death has left her grieving husband David (Romain Duris) alone with their infant daughter. Shortly after the funeral, Claire checks in on the widower and finds him all made up, wearing Laura’s dress and a blonde wig to boot. Promising not to tell her husband Gilles (Raphaël Personnaz) about David’s cross-dressing, Claire finds herself entering uncharted territory with her late friend’s husband and no one to confide in. Beautifully shot with an eye for the little details that we associate with femininity, the film is as much an exploration of the rituals and meanings of female friendships as it is of gender,...

Three episodes were provided for review purposes prior to broadcast.
There’s a scene in “Bad Seed,” the fifth episode of Fxx’s riotous new ‘toon Major Lazer, part of the network’s Animation Domination lineup, when the title character is battling a giant weed boogeyman named Mr. Mary-Jane and becomes snared in his opponent’s vine-like clutches. “I’ll keep growing back, Major Lazer, you’ll never kill me!” The creature snarls. Blissed out as always, the Rastafarian soldier replies, “Why kill weed, when I can smoke weed?” Activating his lazers, Major Lazer proceeds to literally smoke Mr. Mary-Jane to death. It’s that kind of toked up madness that both characterizes Major Lazer and almost makes it beyond my mere powers of critical comprehension.
You see, I could tell you that the insanity of Major Lazer is based around the eponymous, ganja-loving superhero in a futuristic, dystopian Jamaica,...

The Mad Decent commander-in-chief has just released a new track that sees him going down the indie route. Titled “Long Way Home,” this low-key song from Diplo is a collaboration between the celebrated producer, Grizzly Bear’s Ed Droste and Vampire Weekend’s Rostam Batmanglij.
A far departure from what we’re used to hearing with not only his solo efforts, but from Jack Ü and Major Lazer as well, the track is a soothing and relaxed song that shows us Diplo isn’t confined to just a single genre, and that when he wants to, he can distance himself from all the twerking, trap, moombahton and everything else he’s known for.
If some of the song sounds familiar, it’s because it’s mostly a re-imagining of Ty Dolla $ign’s “Stand For.” It works well, though, and should prove to be a hit with both indie and mainstream audiences.

Every year for the past few years, a new "Hunger Games" movie has been unleashed on the world and those releases have come complete with a slew of tie-in merchandise, cunningly synergistic and essential in the studio's desire to build hype and awareness around the young-adult novel adaptations (which star Jennifer Lawrence and are based on books by Suzanne Collins, of course).
But the soundtracks to the films have become mini-events in and of themselves, able to build the kind of fervor the movies usually do (with just as much anticipation and speculation). We attended the junket for next week's "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1"over the weekend, and were handed a copy of the brand-new album (out now physically and digitally) and figured we should rundown the album properly. So here we go!
(Sorry, streaming versions of the songs weren't available for all tracks!)

No play ever celebrated arrested development quite so amusingly as Kenneth Lonergan’s This Is Our Youth, a shambling off-Broadway hit from 1996 now revived starring Michael Cera, Kieran Culkin and an ingenue named Tavi Gavinson, all making their Broadway debuts. The production is the latest transfer by Chicago’s Steppenwolf Theatre, and as staged by Anna D. Shapiro, it’s typical of that celebrated troupe in its physicality combined with thoughtfulness.
The time is the 1980s and the setting is the apartment of Dennis (Culkin), who passes the time selling weed and coke while waiting for his life to happen. When his equally vacant but much milder friend Warren (Cera, of Juno and Arrested Development) shows up with $15,000 stolen from his possibly mobbed-up father, the boys consider several options: using the money to score a major drug deal and make even more money; return it before Warren’s father discovers...

After seven years of murder, intrigue and fang-banging, HBO’s True Blood finally ended this week in explosive fashion. Whether you thought the finale was satisfying or not, it’s impossible to deny that the show has been consistently entertaining along the way. Many will miss the exploits of Sookie Stackhouse and the other denizens of Bon Temps who were forced to adapt once vampires emerged from the darkness to co-exist with humans.
The award-winning show has had more than its fair share of controversial moments, particularly in its depiction of graphic violence and sexuality, but praise has also been given for its racial diversity and portrayal of Lgbt characters. Despite some criticism, True Blood has enjoyed consistently high ratings since its debut, becoming one of HBO’s most viewed shows since The Sopranos, their most popular program to date.

"My Song 5," the latest single from SoCal sister trio Haim -- which features a guest verse from A$AP Ferg -- is a fairly downbeat song about your cheatin' heart (Sample lyric: "You've been lying/So honey/I'm not your honey pie"), but the accompanying video is a goofy, celebrity-filled spin on "The Jerry Springer Show." Strange phobias, runaway cats and, of course, cheaters and liars; It's just another typical episode of "The Dallas Murphy Show," hosted by Dallas Murphy ("SNL's" Vanessa Bayer), where the guests include Haim, Ferg and music notables such as Kesha, Grimes, Big Sean, Vampire Weekend's Ezra Koenig, Ariel Rechtshaid and even Haim's own parents. Watch it here: It was directed by Dugan O'Neal (who's worked with Chromeo and TV on the Radio), based on an idea from the band. "Haim came to me with an idea I had been thinking about and...

Haim's music video for "My Song 5" is packed with celeb cameos, including a rap verse from A$AP Ferg. The haunting jam's video begins comically with Saturday Night Live's Vanessa Bayer playing the Jerry Springer-like talk show host of the series The Dallas Murphy Show. Her first guest is It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia actress Artemis Pebdani, who's deathly afraid of cotton balls and storms offstage at the sight of them. Then Kesha comes as a Keiysha, a woman in love with her cat. Later on, During A$AP Ferg's verse, the rapper busts rhymes about his girlfriend leaving him for another woman. Other stars seen in the video include Grimes, Vampire Weekend's Ezra Koenig, Big...

Haim's "My Song 5" won't help you get any closer to remembering what the third Haim sister looks like, but it will give you a taste of what kinds of cameos the ladies can pull in. SNL's Vanessa Bayer hosts "The Dallas Murphy Show" (a play on Maury and the like) featuring flashes of Kesha Rose, Grimes, Vampire Weekend's Ezra Koenig, Big Sean, and Ariel Rechtshaid. It's also got a verse from A$AP Ferg — who is being left by his lover for another woman. Basic cable never looked so cool.

The French New Wave, that cinematic movement from the 1960s that essentially defined iconoclasm for film, has undoubtedly had its impact on nearly everything, from film to music to style. And given its indelible impact on cultural history, it’s one of the easiest artistic movements to pull from, as demonstrated from three key music videos inspired by, ripped off from, and celebrating the auteurs from Godard to Truffaut.
“Dancing with Myself” – Nouvelle Vague
There’s a bit of irony and wordplay going on here. First, the band’s name is Nouvelle Vague, nodding to both the French New Wave and the New Wave in music during the 1980s. Then there’s the name of the album that the French cover band chose to use: Bande à Part, from the Jean-Luc Godard film of the same name. Then there’s the actual music video. Rather than go about “creating” a music video for their single,...
