The stifling religious and social conformity of a small Spanish town is the source of the shocks in this scare story – along with a spectral girl in white
Here is another sociologically buttressed Spanish-language gothic horror to file alongside The Devil’s Backbone and The Orphanage. With this film set near 1980s Tarragona, director Víctor García draws on a convincing period setting to nourish his scare story – even if the shocks aren’t especially chilling, and the sense of claustrophobic entrapment in the milieu is undermined by a cop-out open ending.
Teenager Sara (Carla Campra) is newly arrived in town, and struggling to adjust to this backwater with its stifling piety and social snobbery. After letting off some steam at a club with her hothead pal Rebe (Aina Quiñones) and hitching a lift back with a pair of local bad boys, they almost crash when a spectral girl in a communion...

A family wedding is always a day to remember where nothing goes wrong…
Well, not quite. And it is no different for two time Oscar-winning director, Asghar Farhadi, in his latest film, Everybody Knows.
Farhadi creates a thriller that is intriguing from the start and weaves the mystery through family secrets in a seemingly simple story told with craft. We meet Laura (Penélope Cruz) who returns to her hometown with her family for her sister’s wedding. It leads to the introduction of Paco (Javier Bardem), a long-time friend of the family whose connection runs far deeper.
Both Bardem and Cruz are a formidable force on screen and when together there is added magic.
As the wedding proceedings get underway and the evening party is in full swing, it is discovered Laura’s daughter, Irene (Carla Campra), is missing and later confirmed as kidnapped.

Asghar Farhadi’s “Everybody Knows,” which launched the 2018 Cannes in May, transplants many of the Iranian director’s usual concerns to a small village in Spain. The advance word called it a psychological thriller, and it does contain some thriller elements such as a crime and a race against time to save a young girl who’s gone missing.
But this is not Farhadi doing a genre exercise; as is most of his work, “Everybody Knows” is a quietly gripping examination of societal divisions, of class, of secrets that bind us together and pull us apart. And it’s about what happens when secrets aren’t really secrets, when “everybody knows” — or suspects, or at least gossips.
Many of those secrets swirl around Laura and Paco, played by Penélope Cruz and Javier Bardem. She’s a woman from the village who has been living with her husband and children in Argentina for years,...

"Even when life has moved on, the past doesn't always stay in the past." Focus has debuted an official Us trailer for the upcoming release of Asghar Farhadi's film Everybody Knows or Todos lo Saben originally in Spanish, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year. The film has played at a bunch of film festivals all over the world, and will finally open in Us cinemas next February. Everybody Knows is about a Spanish woman who returns to her hometown outside Madrid with her Argentinian husband and children. However, the trip and wedding ceremony is upset by unexpected events that bring secrets into the open. Real-life lovers Penélope Cruz and Javier Bardem star, with a cast that includes Ricardo Darin, Carla Campra, Inma Cuesta, and Barbara Lennie. The reviews for this have been mixed - it's not one of Farhadi's best films, the story is stretched a bit too thin.

Disregarding the vomitus of clichés with which Asghar Farhadi introduces the rural Spanish milieu of Everybody Knows, for the first half-hour or so, the Iranian director actually appears to be trying something more structurally daring and compelling than in any of his previous work. In depicting Laura’s (Penélope Cruz) return from Argentina to attend a family wedding in her native village, the film flits through a vast number of characters and locations, drawing a complex web of connections amongst family members, friends and other villagers. The rapid succession of very short scenes disallows for a clear character configuration to emerge. Instead, a feeling of intimate acquaintance between all inhabitants of the small village is established, while the uneasy mix of social classes and scattered intimations of discontent amongst some of the characters hints at a rotten underside to the pastoral joviality on show. The ominous disorientation that arises almost...

Early on in Asghar Farhadi‘s “Everybody Knows,” the film chosen to open the 71st edition of the Cannes Film Festival, there’s a quick succession of shots that give us a brief burr of neo-realism. Laura (Penélope Cruz) has flown from Argentina to her small Spanish hometown for the wedding of her sister, with pretty, wild teenage daughter Irene (Carla Campra) and curly-headed young son in tow.

Between Paris-set “The Past” and the picturesque new Spanish drama “Everybody Knows,” Oscar-blessed Iranian director Asghar Farhadi’s career is starting to look suspiciously like Woody Allen’s, as he jets off to make sunlit movies starring beautiful people in one European country after another. Globe-trotting is well and good, except one hopes the immensely talented auteur responsible for “A Separation” and “The Salesman,” whose freedom to address certain topics is tightly monitored at home, would use the opportunity of working abroad to be a bit more provocative.
Selected to open what many are preemptively (and therefore prematurely) declaring an off year for the 2018 Cannes Film Festival, Farhadi’s weakest film yet is still better than the vast majority of commercially made dramas in Spain, France or the United States. There’s a twist that arrives an hour into “Everybody Knows” that wouldn’t feel out of place in a telenovela. However, under the guidance of Iranian writer-director Asghar Farhadi, it’s just another piece of a beguiling puzzle. As with all the riveting dramas he’s produced over the past decade — “A Separation,” “The Past,” and “The Salesman” — Farhadi’s first Spanish-language feature explores fissures of family bonds as they threaten to fall apart. New cracks keep appearing in unexpected places, some more resonant than others, but they’re mere vessels for a fascinating deep-dive into the perils of hidden information.
