Whenever I talk to people from Malaysia or Indonesia, they do not fail to mention that the mainstream cinema of their countries, and essentially the most popular movies, consist mostly of horror and romantic movies. These titles are very rarely exported, to festivals for example, but it seems that in recent years, Netflix, in its constant search for context, has decided to pick up a number, thus allowing them to reach an international audience. Perhaps the reason is the success of directors like Joko Anwar, who has managed to raise the horror genre to rather high levels. Ruben Adrian attempts to do something similar with “Spirited”, by mixing horror with fantasy, in a combination that is quite popular nowadays.

Richie Mehta’s harrowing Netflix series “Delhi Crime” was the big winner at the 2nd annual Asian Academy Creative Awards in Singapore on Friday.
Representing the show, lead actress Shefali Shah was rushed off her feet as she repeatedly had to return to the stage. “Delhi Crime” earned her best actress in a leading role, best drama series and best direction, and fiction, for Mehta. Earlier, the series also won best original program by a streamer/Ott on the first night of the two-day awards.
Shah was also on stage, at Singapore’s beautifully restored historical Victoria theatre to present the inaugural award for best feature film, that went to her compatriot Zoya Akhtar’s Indian Oscar submission “Gully Boy.” Indian animated show, “Lamput,” produced for Cartoon Network was also among the winners.

Mo Brothers took a radical turn in their career after their first film, “Macabre,” which was a low-budget slasher, with “Killers,” an Indonesian-Japanese co-production with a big budget that resulted in a stylized thriller.
The story takes place at two places at the same time. In Japan, Nomura Shohei is a seemingly charming executive with a very dark side. His “hobby” is to capture, torture, and record women in his house, on videos he later uploads on the Internet. As he roams the streets in his car one night, he witnesses a young woman, Hisae, trying to kill her autistic brother by throwing him in front of a passing car, regretting the last moment. The Killers Inside Me: The Mo Bros’ International Serial Spree
Directing duo Kimo Stamboel and Timo Tjahjanto, better known as the Mo Brothers, team for the slice and dice serial killer thriller Killers, which should at least get credit for being a bit more psychologically advanced than one might otherwise assume. Produced by a variety of notables, including Gareth Evans and Sion Sono (you’d be forgiven if the hyper-choreographed bits of bloody violence didn’t remind you several times of either of those more infamous, stylized directors) and with its two leads hailing from The Raid 2, there’s certainly a core audience for this type of material from which the Mo Brothers do not deviate, though its violence as mindset motif seems to prize subtexts we often find swimming in the carnage of Sono’s films. Women, as are often the case in these hyperviolent explorations of the devious masculine id,...

Blood-soaked Indonesian horror-thriller hybrid Killers apes the worst aspect of serial-killer dramas like Dexter and Hannibal by pretending that elaborately repulsive acts of violence are a form of psychoanalysis of murderers' behavior. Grueling scenes of torture only overstate the obvious ties that bind Nomura (Kazuki Kitamura), a slick Japanese yuppy and self-described killer, and Bayu (Oka Antara), a disgraced journalist and accidental slayer. The movie insists it's their powerlessness that makes them murder. Nomura, a Patrick Bateman–esque psycho who slaughters defenseless women with mallets and baseball bats, attacks Bayu's friends and enemies because he's lonely and is convinced Bayu is a kindred spirit. And Bayu clumsily dons a ski mas...

Somewhere around the hour-and-ten minute mark of Killers, I recapped what had transpired and thought, “Sweet baby Jesus, what else could these maniac “Mo brothers” possibly bash me over the head with?” Violent murders, perverse lawyers, grotesque torture, acidic erasures – then I realized there was still over an hour of carnage left. Expecting more of the same serial-slashing antics, Killers happily breaks from more generic torture-porn mentalities and engages in thoughtful depictions of a “good versus evil” battle that demands blood be spilled on both fronts. All two-hours-and-seventeen minutes are utilized by the Mo brothers, with a little scripting help from Takuji Ushiyama, as their film explores the minds of mass-murderers from a visually relentless, competitive, and unsettling new light.

10. The Raid 2
When Gareth Evans' The Raid: Redemption burst on to cinema screens in 2011, action movie fans rejoiced. Here was a film that relied on pure, scintillating fight choreography and inventive direction to produce one of the finest action films in years. A sequel surely beckoned, and in 2014, The Raid 2 arrived; bigger, badder and with a considerable amount of attitude.
The tower block of The Raid was merely a microcosm for the wider fight against corruption and organised crime in Jakarta and, picking up from where the first film left off, Rama (Iko Uwais) finds himself going undercover.

When presented with a film proudly stating “from the producers of The Raid” you’d expect it to be similar, but with Killers that thought would be wrong. This isn’t a bad thing though, the subject matter makes up for it. A psychological battle of wits between two serial killers from different backgrounds being drawn together through the lust for murder is an interesting concept, what will happen when they finally meet?
Bayu Aditya (Oka Antara) is a loser in life, a failed investigative journalist and separated from his wife he finds himself pushed into murder when defending himself from a mugging. The Raid 2 - Sony Pictures Classics - Blu-ray and DVD Director: Gareth Evans Cast: Iko Uwais, Yayan Ruhian, Arifin Putra, Oka Antara, Tio Pakusadewo. Full cast + crew Everything you've heard about The Raid 2 is true. The action is absolutely insane, taking things to a level of ridiculous practicality that is flat-out missing from Hollywood action movies. The scope of the story is surprisingly large and dense, which in turn elevates the stakes of the action. There plenty of martial arts movies that have great action and silly plots. The Raid 2 eats those movies for breakfast. It is also quite long, the plot is possibly a bit too dense for its own good, and the violence is just insane. But complaining about those elements in this scenario is...

In 2012 Gareth Evans burst onto the scene with The Raid: Redemption. He took a simple concept and filled it with some of the most engaging and inventive action seen in years. Now two years later he is back at again to prove it was not a fluke. The Raid 2 shows Evans has a knack for pushing the boundaries of cinematic action. With a larger budget behind him, he ups the scale of each set-piece without hindering his cleverness. Breaking away from the simple concept of the original does lead to an overly plotting story that gets lost in its own elaborate setup. Chicago – Two years ago, the Indonesian film, “The Raid: Redemption”, smacked action movie fans upside the head. To briefly sum it up, it was nuts. The straight-forward plot took a backseat to some amazing stunt work, an insane amount of creative choreography and in-your-face violence. There’s no need to worry about the sequel, “The Raid 2,” not living up to the original.

Chicago – In 2011, a new kind of martial arts film hit the screens, and wowed audiences with outrageous fight scenes, stunts and violence. “The Raid: Redemption” put Welsh filmmaker Gareth Evans – working from Indonesia – on the map, and he is back with fight choreographer and lead actor Iko Uwais in “The Raid 2.”
Expanding on the concept of the heroic Indonesian cop from the first Raid film, “The Raid 2” places him undercover in the seamy world of organized crime syndicates. Without confining itself to one location, as the first Raid did, “The Raid 2” is even more viscerally exciting and audacious, with bigger and better fights, action sequences and weird characters.
The story of Welsh Englishman Gareth Evans reinventing the Martial Arts genre was mostly by an accident of timing and place. He was hired to make a documentary in the country of Indonesia about their style of martial arts fighting,...

With the European Film Market kicking off this week in Berlin, expect lots of announcements, but first we have some North American distro news to share as Well Go USA Entertainment has just picked up those rights to the Sundance favorite Killers.
The company plans a domestic theatrical release date for the fourth quarter of 2014.
The Japanese/Indonesian co-production was directed by Timo Tjahjanto and Kimo Stamboel (The Mo Brothers) and stars Kazuki Kitamura, Oka Antara, Rin Takanashi, Luna Maya, and Ray Sahetapy.
Gareth Huw Evans (The Raid: Redemption) executive produced, with Yoshinori Chiba, Kimo Stamboel, Shinjiro Nishimura, Takuji Ushiyama, and Tjahjanto producing.
In the film, two serial killers, one Japanese and one Indonesian, post their violent crimes online in a psychotic battle for notoriety. It soon becomes clear that they will square off with one another face-to-face.

Spend twenty minutes on the Internet and you can find a video entailing just about anything the imagination can come up with, with a few exceptions of course. One of those exceptions involves yours truly singing the national anthem with a mouth full of bugs, and another involves serial murders. Distribution company Well Go USA is trying to change the latter of those, as they.ve acquired the North American rights to the Indonesian horror thriller Killers from the devious Mo Brothers, Timo Tjahjanto and Kimo Stamboel. Killers, the directors. first full feature since the bloodstorm that was 2009.s Macabre, had its world premiere recently as a Sundance Midnight feature, proving the duo are capable of weaving tense drama and suspense into their hyper-violent narrative. The story is split between two men: Bayu (Oka Antara) is a struggling journalist who uploads a video of his fatal form of self-defense, only...

Sundance just ended, and we are already preparing for the next big film festival, South By Southwest. Not too long ago, the festival announced a few of the films premiering this year, but now they’ve announced the main slate. The midnight selections and some inevitable late-breaking additions are still to be announced, but this should be more than enough to get you excited. Along with many World Premieres, and Sundance favorites like Richard Linklater’s Boyhood and Gareth Evans’ The Raid 2, the line up also includes an anniversary screening of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, and an extended Q&A screening of The Grand Budapest Hotel with Wes Anderson. SXSW 2014 runs March 7 through 15 in Austin, Texas. Check out the line up after the jump.

The 2014 SXSW "Film Features Program" includes 115 titles, and along with the previously announced zombie culture documentary Doc of the Dead, there's a lot for the horror crowd...
...including special screenings of the original Godzilla and Texas Chain Saw Massacre, early looks at upcoming TV shows "From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series" and "Penny Dreadful," the U.S. premiere of Alejandro Jodorowsky's The Dance of Reality, and new films from the Spierig brothers, Nacho Vigalondo, and Jim Jarmusch.
The genre-heavy "Midnighter" lineup will be announced next week along with the list of short films, but in the meantime here are the horror highlights (or what we assume will be of interest given their descriptions) to be on the lookout for during the fest.
Note that new for 2014, they've introduced the "Episodic" category, created to highlight innovative new work hitting the small screen.

After announcing earlier this month that Jon Favreau’s Chef and the Veronica Mars movie will be making their world debuts at SXSW this year, the festival has revealed its full line-up, including further very promising world premieres, alongside appearances from some of the year’s most high-profile films.
The Midnight programme will be announced early next month, along with the Shorts line-up, and the complete Conference slate a little later as well.
Led by Seth Rogen and Zac Efron, Nicholas Stoller’s anticipated R-rated comedy, Neighbors, will be making its world debut at the festival, notably marked out as a ‘work-in-progress’ ahead of its theatrical release in May.
David Gordon Green’s acclaimed Joe will make its Us premiere, having bowed at Venice and then Toronto last year. Early reviews have Nicolas Cage giving one of the finest performances of his career, with Tye Sheridan (Mud) excellent alongside him.

Not sure if there is a Short Term 12 equivalent in this year’s Narrative Feature Comp, but on paper SXSW programmers are serving up a mean (and the usual lean group of 8 out of a whopping 1,324 film entries) for the upcoming competitiuon of eight which includes notable entries (that we’ve been tracking for a good time now) such as Zachary Wigon’s The Heart Machine, John Magary’s The Mend, Leah Meyerhoff’s I Believe in Unicorns and Lawrence Michael Levine’s Wild Canaries. Undoubtedly one of the most anticipated docs of the year, on the non-fiction side we find Margaret Brown’s The Great Invisible. Below you’ll find a breakdown of the other sections (notable world preems in We’ll Never Have Paris and Faults (see Mary Elizabeth Winstead above), some Sundance items with Texan connections and other nuggets.

Killers turned out to be the darkest most brutal movie that I saw at Sundance. It is a really well made film, but damn... It's one of those movies that are kind of uncomfortable to watch, and you see things that cannot be unseen. It was was insanely violent and bloody, but that wasn't really what made it so brutal. It was the nature in which the violence was inflicted.
The story focuses on a serial killer named Mr. Nomura, who films himself killing the women that he lures to his home. He then posts them on a website were people can watch these live killings. There is another character in the film named Bayu that watches this killer's work. He is going through some hard times of his own with his job and family. He finds himself the victim of a robbery, but in the process, he kills the...

In the Raid 2: Berandal, writer-director Gareth Evans sets a new bar for action movies by taking the groundbreaking fight choreography of the first movie to greater heights with bigger set pieces, badder villains, and bolder, more inventive action sequences that will leave you reeling.
Fans of the self-contained first movie — about a S.W.A.T. team who must fight their way through a drug-lord’s safe house — have much more to sink their teeth into – action and story wise – in the sequel. Picking up moments after the events of The Raid, The Raid 2 finds rookie Officer Rama forced to go undercover to infiltrate an organized crime syndicate.

Sony Pictures Classics has released the new trailer for the upcoming film The Raid 2. The sequel had it’s world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival.
This is what those in attendance at the screening had to say:
Devin Faraci (Badassdigest) tweeted: “Gareth Evans is the greatest living action director. The Raid 2 is spectacular. #sundance14″ and “Can’t even imagine the money every studio will be throwing at Gareth Evans now. This movie is just so much bigger and better than The Raid.” Read his review Here.
Russ Fischer (Slashfilm) tweeted: “The Raid 2 sets a spectacular new benchmark for vehicular action. The Fast and the What, again?” and “The Raid 2 has some incredible action and a “more is more” mindset. Drama aspires to The Godfather, achieves only a pale homage.”

The Raid 2 is a film fans have been clamoring for since the original in 2011 and it’s easy to see that this film will satisfy those ardent supporters. While the film does contain many exciting elements and some of the most daring fights you’ll ever seen, the film left me pretty detached by the nature of its thin and ever shifting plot.
The movie picks up where the last one left off with Officer Rama meeting with the anti-corruption task force. He is pressured into joining because he is worried for the safety of his wife and son. It’s his safety that he should be really concerned about as he is sent to prison to befriend a mob boss’ son named Uco and has to quite literally fight for his life while in the slammer. After saving Uco from a particularly brutal battle,...

Premiering tonight at the Sundance Film Festival is the highly anticipated sequel The Raid 2, subtitled Berandal, which takes place two hours after the ending of The Raid. "Why do this?" "Because we can." Yet another Sundance 2014 film debuting a trailer to kick off the festival is a Park City at Midnight selection titled Killers. The second feature comes from filmmaking collaborators Kimo Stamboel & Timo Tjahjanto, who last came to Sundance in 2013 to present their crazy segment "Safe Haven" (you know the one) from anthology horror V/H/S/2. They're back again with a film about two serial killers who post their violent crimes online in a psychotic battle for notoriety. It "soon becomes clear that they will square off with one another face to face." The cast of Killers: Kazuki Kitamura, Oka Antara, Rin Takanashi, Luna Maya, Ray Sahetapy.
