Julissa Calderon is a Dominican-American actress from Miami who first became known for the viral videos she produced and starred in for Buzzfeed's "Pero Like," with the mission to use her platform to create the Dominican representation and storytelling she wasn't seeing online. She broke into Hollywood after landing the role of Yessika, a queer Afro-Dominicana, in Netflix's "Gentefied." She was later cast in Prime's "With Love," where she also got to play a Dominican woman by the name of Annie.

Netflix has canceled “Gentefied,” a half-hour Latino comedy-drama from Marvin Lemus and Linda Yvette Chávez, produced by America Ferrera. Season 2 of “Gentefied,” starring JJ Soria, Carlos Santos and Joaquin Cosio, was just released on the streamer this past November.
“Gentefied” followed the lives of three Mexican American cousins in Boyle Heights who must tackle gentrification, borders, babies and family separation, all while attempting to save their grandpa’s taco shop. “Gentefied” also starred Karrie Martin, Annie Gonzalez, Julissa Calderon, and even Ferrera herself played a character on the show.
Critics overwhelmingly liked the series when it debuted in 2020. The review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes gave “Gentefied” a score of 96% on the “Tomatometer,” and an average audience score of 76%. The last highly-rated Latino-focused sitcom that Netflix slashed from its programming slate was Gloria Calderón Kellett’s reboot of “One Day at a Time.”

Exclusive: Netflix has opted not to renew half-hour Latinx dramedy Gentefied for a third season. The decision comes two months after the release of show’s second season on November 10.
The show never appeared in the Netflix Top 10 with the new season, which likely played a part in Netflix’s cancellation decision, which typically factors in cost, viewership and critical acclaim.
Gentefied, from creators Marvin Lemus and Linda Yvette Chávez, follows East Los Angeles Latinos on their respective and collective search for the American Dream. Season 2 tackles Erik Morales (JJ Soria) and his cousin Chris’s (Carlos Santos) struggle to keep Pops (Joaquin Cosio) in the country while dealing with new love, new babies, estranged fathers and tracking down Bad Bunny at a Halloween party. They fight to thrive, but along the way question where they truly belong in a world made up of borders, family separation, and the potential...

It’s been over a year since audiences met the Morales clan and their Boyle Heights, Los Angeles taco shop, Mama Fina’s. At the end of Season 1, the group knew that Mama Fina’s was on death’s door, set to be bought out by a gentrifying white woman interested in turning it into a pop-up shop. On top of that, family patriarch Casimiro, aka Pop (Joaquín Cosio), had been picked up on a routine traffic violation and was being detained by Ice. With so much tension built up, creators Marvin Lemus and Linda Yvette Chávez could have made this a heavily dramatized season. And it is, no doubt, but “Gentefied” always retains the sense of heart and community that made Season 1 so special.

Alexandra Codina got involved with filmmaking right after college. Following her job as a production assistant in New York, she began working with the Miami Film Festival in 2002, where she learned to further pursue a career in the filmmaking industry. Codina ran the community programming and outreach areas of the festival until 2005, when she confidently decided to fully pursue documentary production. In 2010, her first feature film, “Monica and David,” was picked up by HBO.
“Because I worked [at the Miami Film Festival], I made a lot of friendships with people in the industry so when I was ready for ‘Monica and David’ it wasn’t as frightening to go out there and to try to sell the film and to try to talk to people as peers,” she says.
This year, Codina returns to the Miami Dade College’s Miami Film Festival with her feature “Paper Children,” a drama centered on the immigration crisis at the United States-Mexico border.

Representation matters. On Friday, actress Julissa Calderon emphasized this point as she stopped by Pop of the Morning to discuss her Netflix show, Gentefied. The comedy-drama follows the fictional Morales cousins as they try to save their grandfather's taco shop amid gentrification in their Los Angeles neighborhood. "It's an amazing show, it's so well written and…it shows us in all of our arcs," Calderon, who plays local activist and Ana Morales' girlfriend Yessika Castillo, shared with Potm co-hosts Victor Cruz, Lilliana Vazquez and Scott Tweedie. "You don't ever see that! You don't see brown people—unless they're behind a cell, being maids—this shows exactly...

Every detail from the live mariachi band to the fresh esquites and pupusas served at the Los Angeles premiere of “Gentefied” at Los Angeles’ Plaza de la Raza on Thursday night reflected the Netflix series’ aim at authentically representing the culture of the Latinx community in today’s modern age. Exec producer America Ferrera has been in the business for nearly two decades and reflected on her experience as a Latinx actor in the industry and the shift she’s witnessed in Hollywood over her career.
“I feel like for most of my career I felt so alone and so isolated from other Latinos in this industry,” Ferrera told Variety. “But now, today, I get to work with incredibly talented Latinos and bring to life a story that is so close to our hearts at a time when other creators that we love, admire and respect so much are getting to do the same.

The Los Angeles that TV and movies portray is rarely, as anyone who’s actually from Los Angeles can tell you, particularly accurate to life there outside the entertainment industry. The sprawling city is dense with its own culture, much of which, thanks to sharp influxes money and new (whiter) residents, is perpetually in danger of getting pushed out. Netflix’s new comedy “Gentefied,” from creators Marvin Lemus and Linda Yvette Chávez based on their 2017 webseries of the same name, aims to spotlight the very people who keep getting relegated to the margins of their own city. Its central Mexican-American family has lived in Boyle Heights for decades. Now, they have to adjust to the reality of creeping gentrification and stay afloat without sacrificing their own cultural identity in the process.
