Rory Scovel sweated his way through postproduction of his latest stand-up special. The night it taped, he’d been sure his Minneapolis set had killed. But the laughter was barely audible in the cuts he was watching. “I thought I bombed,” he says. “Here I am, entering year 20 in comedy, only to find out I’m actually very delusional.”
Anxious, perhaps, but not delusional. There’s abundant laughter in Religion, Sex and a Few Things in Between, out Feb. 22 on Max, now that it includes actual audio of the audience — and not just Scovel’s stage mic, the only recording that he’d previously heard. The 43-year-old South Carolina native’s two-month doom spiral had been for nothing. But even if it had been the disaster he feared, Scovel has more to fall back on these days. Key roles on the Apple TV+ drama Physical and Damien Chazelle’s Babylon...

Tig Notaro is heading back to Amazon — and live action — for her latest comedy special. Prime Video will debut Tig Notaro: Hello Again this March.
The new hour marks Notaro’s first project at Amazon since the end of her two-season Prime Video comedy One Mississippi in 2017 and her first flesh-and-blood taping in nearly six years. Her last special, Tig Notaro: Drawn, made history as the first fully animated stand-up special when it landed on HBO in 2022.
Hello Again follows Drawn, as well as other previous specials 2018’s Happy to Be Here and 2015’s Boyish Girl Interrupted. It is described as including “delightfully awkward misunderstandings, health scares made hilarious and family moments with her wife and children that are simultaneously sidesplitting and heartwarming.”
The streamers are absolutely hammering their slates with stand-up specials this spring. Perhaps it’s just a continuation of the years-long trend or maybe it has something...

[This story contains spoilers to the series finale of Physical.]
Across three seasons, Rose Byrne has seen her Physical alter ego Sheila Rubin finally achieve self-discovery and self-acceptance through aerobics, having been drawn initially to the exercise as she struggled with an eating disorder and what very well may be some of the most negative self-talk anyone has experienced — at least on television. From the moment viewers were introduced to Sheila in Apple TV+’s dark comedy, she was also joined by the protagonist’s biting and destructive inner voice that seemingly would stop at nothing to keep Sheila from achieving any sort of happiness within her struggling marriage to Danny (Rory Scovel), her extramarital affair with a Morman businessman (Paul Sparks) and her professional partnership with exercise entrepreneurs Bunny (Delia Saba) and Greta (Dierdre Friel).
By the beginning of the third and final season of the Annie Weisman-created series, Sheila is seemingly in a great place — the inner voice tamed,...

As Physical winds down, it looks like Sheila (Rose Byrne) and Danny's (Rory Scovel) relationship will come back into focus, whether they like it or not.
TV Fanatic scored an exclusive first look at the penultimate episode of the Apple TV+ comedy, and you can cut the tension with a knife.
The video starts promising enough with the pair talking about their happier times until Danny has the gall to tell Sheila how she felt back then.
Sheila rightfully points out that she's been bottling up her feelings her whole life and isn't ready to go back to that.
With a matter of words, it seems Danny's hopes for a reunion are dashed, and that's reiterated when Sheila walks off, telling him that they're, indeed, done.
It's an emotional clip that shows the distance between the pair because their relationship was never on that strong of a footing throughout the series.

The end of Physical will be here before we know it.
Apple TV+ went public with the key art and trailer for Physical Season 3 on Wednesday, and we have plenty of questions.
The trailer welcomes Zooey Deschanel to the cast as Kelly Kilmartin, and it's clear from the get-go that Rose Byrne's Sheila is not destined to be BFFs with her -- far from it, actually.
"Set in the idyllic but fragile beach paradise of 1980s San Diego, Physical follows Sheila Rubin (Byrne) as she transforms from quietly tortured housewife to dominant fitness entrepreneur," the logline for the final season teases.

The third and final season of “Physical” will introduce a new competitor to Rose Byrne’s Sheila Rubin.
Just as the dark voices in her head have silenced as Sheila commits to her wellness journey and builds a television fitness empire, a new opponent arises for the entrepreneur in a rising exercise celebrity, played by Zooey Deschanel.
“You are a national television personality now,” Greta tells Sheila in the trailer. “We are on the precipice of something big, there’s just one problem: Kelly Kilmartin … she’s the most famous fitness star.”
Doubt immediately begins to creep into Sheila’s mind, manifesting itself as an imaginary Kelly (Deschanel), who taunts Sheila by saying, “I’m better than you” and “you’re just hanging on by a thread, just waiting for that moment to snap.”

“Physical” will end with its forthcoming third season, Apple TV+ announced on Wednesday. The 10-episode final season is scheduled to premiere on Wednesday, August 2.
Starring Rose Byrne, the dark comedy follows Sheila Rubin (Byrne), a quietly tortured, seemingly dutiful housewife supporting her smart but controversial husband’s bid for state assembly. But behind closed doors, Sheila has her own darkly funny take on life she rarely lets the world see. As she battles her own personal demons, Sheila comes to find a release through the world of aerobics.
Season two found Sheila, having successfully launched her first fitness video only to encounter some new and bigger obstacles on her path. She is torn between loyalty to her husband (Rory Scovel) and the values he represents, and a dangerous attraction to someone else. And since she’s no longer the only game in town, she finds herself having to outrun some...

“I like the challenge of bad behavior from a good person,” reveals Annie Weisman. She serves as showrunner, writer, and executive producer for “Physical” on Apple TV+. Season 2 of the series sees plenty of poor behavior from its core characters, but Weisman always manages to lure viewers into rooting for her characters no matter their missteps. Watch the exclusive video interview above. This chat was recorded before the writers strike began.
“I really love exploring characters that you think you’re done with, and then finding the empathy again,” explains Weisman. A prime example of the writer meeting this challenge head on this season is with Danny (Rory Scovel). It’s safe to say that his wife Sheila (Rose Byrne), and the audience, had written off their marriage as a goner after Danny’s poor decisions in the first season. With the Screen Actors Guild Awards just around the corner, one has to wonder: Does more talent on screen automatically translate to more awards?
In the 27-year history of the ensemble film award (it was first awarded at the second ceremony), the movie with the largest cast has triumphed 11 times. The winning films are, in order, “Shakespeare in Love” (1998) with 12 eligible cast members, “Traffic” (2000) with 19, “Gosford Park” (2001) with 20, “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” (2003) with 19, “Slumdog Millionaire” (2008) with 11, “Inglourious Basterds” (2009) with 16, “The King’s Speech” (2010) with nine, “The Help” (2011) with 12, “Argo” (2012) with 13, “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” (2017) with 11 and “Black Panther” (2018) with 12.
This translates to the films with the largest ensembles winning approximately 40 percent of the time, so one could say that the odds are not in their favor, but it’s not unheard of for them to win either. This then raises the question: What are...

"Are you okay? You're sweating." Paramount has revealed two more "Naughty" and "Nice" trailers (which one are you?) for Damien Chazelle's Babylon, arriving in theaters later this week just before the holidays. Set in old Hollywood during the transition from silent films to talkies in the 1920s, Babylon traces the rise and fall of multiple characters during an era of unbridled decadence and depravity in early Hollywood. The film's extraordinary cast features Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie and Diego Calva as the three co-leads, along with Jean Smart, Jovan Adepo, Li Jun Li, P.J. Byrne, Lukas Haas, Olivia Hamilton, Tobey Maguire, Max Minghella, Rory Scovel, Katherine Waterston, Flea, Jeff Garlin, Eric Roberts, Ethan Suplee, and Samara Weaving. The 3-hour long film has such an excess of debauchery, showing how crazy Hollywood was way back in the 1920s. Hence why they're focusing on this for the final marketing push. Maybe...

After enormous success and Oscars for films ranging from Whiplash to La La Land to First Man, writer-director Damien Chazelle returned to an early dream project first envisioned 15 years ago — a no-holds-barred look at early Hollywood, a time when not only movies were transitioning from silent to sound but Los Angeles itself was booming from desert to bulging metropolis. People were caught up in a turbulent time of change, and it didn’t always work out for some. As witnessed in the resulting film and years of meticulous research, Babylon is a sight to behold, a decadent, freewheeling, at times even poignant look at a series of dreamers, stars, fringe players and all who wanted a piece of a world that felt out of control, uninhibited and full of promise — and downfall.

Whenever Damien Chazelle makes a new movie, you can bet that it'll come with a cast chock-full of A-listers, a spectacle-sized story that spares absolutely no expense, and probably a plot that doubles as a love letter to Hollywood itself. And, of course, it'll likely end up becoming a major awards player when it's all said and done.
"Babylon" will look to keep that trend going, with its latest official trailer attempting to capitalize on the steadily-building buzz behind Chazelle's celebration of a very specific (and tumultuous) period of time in the moviemaking industry -- when the silent era gave way to the glamour and prestige of "talkies." After establishing an incredibly impressive oeuvre with 2014's "Whiplash," the Academy Award darling "La La Land," and the oddly underrated "First Man," Chazelle is back and ready to take audiences on a roller coaster of a trip through Hollywood with some of the biggest names in town.

Tinseltown is known to be the city of sin and excess, and Damien Chazelle’s Babylon is aiming to show how it all started with a portrait of the film industry reaching new glamorous heights as talkies become the rage and the “movie star” life brings a nature of instability. Chazelle has already made an ode to old Hollywood musicals with a modern twist with La La Land, and now, he brings us another look at behind-the-scenes carnage in the new trailer from Paramount.
The official synopsis from Paramount reads,
“From Damien Chazelle, Babylon is an original epic set in 1920s Los Angeles led by Brad Pitt, Margot Robbie and Diego Calva, with an ensemble cast including Jovan Adepo, Li Jun Li and Jean Smart. A tale of outsized ambition and outrageous excess, it traces the rise and fall of multiple characters during an era of unbridled decadence and depravity in early Hollywood.

While we’re still a few weeks away from the film’s official release, Damien Chazelle’s three-plus-hour Babylon has now been unleashed for select press and industry and response has, expectedly, been wildly divisive. Led by Diego Calva, Margot Robbie, and Brad Pitt, the Jazz Age-set epic Babylon lavishly captures Hollywood’s transition from silents to talkies. Also starring Jean Smart, Jovan Adepo, Li Jun Li, P.J. Byrne, Lukas Haas, Olivia Hamilton, Tobey Maguire, Max Minghella, Rory Scovel, Katherine Waterston, Flea, Jeff Garlin, Eric Roberts, Ethan Suplee, Samara Weaving, and Olivia Wilde, a new trailer has now been released.
“They are building a city from scratch and an industry from scratch. It was about capturing the spirit of that time, which I’d say was a lot more wild west,” Chazelle said at TIFF, saying to expect “excess, more drugs, more extreme living on all ends of the spectrum.
