“Intentional” is a word that comes up quite a bit when talking to Teyana Taylor about “A Thousand and One,” the feature debut by writer-director A.V. Rockwell in which the Harlem-native plays Inez, a woman who kidnaps her son from the foster care system in an attempt for them both to have a fresh start in a rapidly changing New York City.
The opportunity to star in the Focus Features release came at a major turning point in Taylor’s career, when she had just had her second child, was battling postpartum depression, and “was in a space where I felt like the people that I love most were not showing up for me, especially the people that’s supposed to make sure I have what I need,” Taylor said to IndieWire over Zoom.

In a cinematic landscape filled with talent, certain performances stand out. From the quiet intensity of Greta Lee in Past Lives to the commanding presence of Taraji P. Henson in The Color Purple, this collection of actors make up some of my favorite performances of the year of films I saw. Each actor brings a unique energy and emotional depth to their roles to not only define their characters but elevate them.
These are not in any particular order.
Greta Lee & Teo Yoo, Past Lives
Lee beautifully navigates the delicate emotional journey put forth in Celine Song’s script. She embodies Nora’s quiet longing with a subtlety, her expressive eyes and gentle smile hinting at the depths of unsaid feelings. When faced with the ghosts of the yesterday, Lee unleashes a rawness that both devastates and resonates, reminding us of the vulnerability it takes to confront the paths not taken.

Tom Hiddleston’s Cinematic Voyage: Breaking Free from Loki and the Marvel Universe ( Photo Credit – IMDb )
In the vibrant tapestry of Hollywood, Tom Hiddleston first caught my attention in 2011 when he brought the mischievous Loki to life in Thor. However, his journey into the realm of cinema began long before that iconic role. Hiddleston’s cinematic voyage commenced with memorable performances in Joanna Hogg’s film Unrelated (2007). As Loki gained widespread recognition within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Hiddleston expanded his horizons beyond the MCU, taking on a prominent leading role in the high-budget film Kong: Skull Island (2017). This venture underscored his versatility, proving his ability to command the big screen with distinction.
Beyond the glitz of Hollywood blockbusters, Hiddleston is a seasoned stage performer. His theatrical journey began with a remarkable debut in Journey’s End in 1999, marking the inception of a prolific stage career. Engaging in various theatrical productions, including...

Lena Waithe can’t be anymore direct when talking about “A Thousand and One,” writer-director A.V. Rockwell’s feature film debut.
“Films like this oftentimes are not always seen or recognized by the Academy,” says Waithe, a producer on the Sundance Film Festival winner. The film follows Inez (Teyana Taylor), a woman recently released from prison who kidnaps her son from the foster care system. “For us, that is the Super Bowl and with this little engine that can, we hope to make it all the way to the big game because the movie is worthy of that screenplay, direction, performance and film. And I hope people really show the film the respect deserves.”
Variety caught up with Waithe and Rockwell over a Zoom call on the morning after the Gotham Awards, where Rockwell won in the category of breakthrough director.

Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds are a family of six! The "Gossip Girl" alum subtly revealed the arrival of the pair's latest family addition on Feb. 12 via a Super Bowl Sunday Instagram post in which she's pictured sans baby bump. While Lively and Reynolds are a pretty private celebrity family, we have gotten a glimpse of their three gorgeous girls - James, Inez, and Betty Reynolds - over the years and hope to soon get a peek at their fourth child.
The good news is, every so often, Lively or Reynolds will speak about their parenting experiences or step out with their kids. Back in January, Reynolds traveled to Wales with his eldest daughter, James, to support Wrexham AFC, the soccer team he owns with Rob McElhenney.
Lively and Reynolds have also kept fans updated on their parenting journey. Speaking to Et Canada in April, Reynolds joked about how he's...

Death Of A Whistleblower
It might not be among the biggest name offerings at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival, but Ian Gabriel’s Death Of A Whistleblower is definitely one of the highlights. Few countries can hold a candle to South Africa these days when it comes to thrillers, and this film finds its substance in the country’s own history. Set 37 years after the death of a young white woman (played by Inez Robertson) at a secret military testing facility, it follows Albert (Irshaad Ally), the soldier who leaks information about the cover up, and Luyanda (Noxolo Diamini), the journalidt who unexpectedly acquires it. As she pursues the story, hitman Mohale (Anthony Oseyemi) pursues her. There’s also some strong supporting work from S’Thandiwe Kgoroge as a corrupt major general whose activities in the present may be connected to the secrets of the past. Though Inez was delayed,...

One could make -- and no doubt some resourceful Marvel Cinematic Universe fans have made -- a video about Loki (Tom Hiddleston) hooking up with different characters in the MCU using footage from Hiddleston's non-Marvel projects. The actor had a tragic affair with Rachel Weisz (Melina Vostokoff in "Black Widow") in "The Deep Blue Sea," played one-half of a pair of vampiric lovers along with Tilda Swinton (the McU's Ancient One) in "Only Lovers Left Alive," and starred as Hank Williams in "I Saw the Light," with the Scarlet Witch herself, Elizabeth Olsen, playing the late country music legend's wife. Hiddleston even had a fling with Elizabeth Debicki (Ayesha in the "Guardians of the Galaxy" films) in "The Night Manager," in addition to a non-zero amount of sexual tension with "Captain Marvel" actor Brie Larson in "Kong: Skull Island."

In the world of Medusa Deluxe, beauticians wield scissors like knives and hairsprays like pistols. Hairstyling competitions are fraught spaces stacked with talented participants. Anyone can tame an unruly mane, but only a handful can turn it into a work of art.
“I’m in the middle of a Georgian fontange,” one stylist snaps in the opening scene of Thomas Hardiman’s exciting directorial debut. “You can’t just walk away from that shit.” Tensions are high in this dressing room. Outside the door, police patrol the hall. Sirens blare in the distance. The death of Mosca (John Alan Roberts), one of the stylists, has paused the competition and forced a temporary lockdown.
The atmosphere is thick with suspicion. This is a cutthroat bunch, a community whose members convene annually to flaunt their skills and prove themselves. There are public alliances and private allegiances. Betrayals abound, too. Everyone has a theory.

The British mystery thriller, Medusa Delux, which marks the debut of director Thomas Hardima, is truly unique in its presentation of this dialogue-driven mystery, but it’s the end that doesn’t quite do it for me. As one can expect, the film uses the gossip-mongering feature of hairdressers to its advantage and creates a thrilling experience in trying to figure out who killed one of their competitors. The characters are all fantastic and hold their own, which is fascinating because there’s no real protagonist, just a bunch of people that we’re paying attention to at different points in time in the film. The one continuous shot effect that the film pulls off is incredible, and the cinematography carries much of this film. It’s a very artsy and kind of camp take on murder mysteries, which I personally have never seen, and that’s why it’s worth a watch.

Hello and welcome to the Scene 2 Seen podcast season 2! I am your host Valerie Complex.
I had planned to take a 6 week hiatus from the podcast in order to plan the next season but ended up being gone for three months. Unfortunately, I had a family tragedy I had to deal with and It took me some time to regroup. Now we’re back in business with guest Teyana Taylor and A.V. Rockwell, star and director of Focus Feature film A Thousand and One which is now available on Peacock TV and Prime Video streaming platforms.
Rockwell is an award-winning screenwriter and director. Named as one of Filmmaker Magazine’s “25 New Faces of Independent Film,” her distinctive voice has been celebrated for slyly addressing issues of race, identity and systemic oppression. Rockwell’s debut feature film, A Thousand and One, was written and directed for Focus Features.

In the commentary on the first episode, the solar panel installer from San Diego reflects on one of the most memorable moments from the jury selection process in the fictional case of Hilgrove vs. Morris. Gladden, who believed he was participating in a documentary about a real trial, suggested to another potential juror that he might be able to get out of serving if he tells the judge he is racist. To his shock, Noah (played by Mekki Leeper) ran with the idea.
Gladden says he was horrified as he watched Noah first declare that he was racist, then quickly apologize and backtrack.

Taylor Swift was forced to make a slight change to her Eras Tour setlist when her piano began to malfunction.
While sitting at the grand instrument during her third show at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts on Sunday, Swift’s piano began playing notes on its own due to technical complications from “a monsoon”-like rainstorm the night before during her second show at the same venue.
“Here’s what happened. So, it rained a lot last night — like a monsoon. To be exact, it rained for three and a half hours straight, and it just kept getting more and more rain,” Swift told the crowd in videos captured by fans. “Literally, it was like a water park under the stage. You have no idea.”

The friends on A Million Little Things Season 5, Episode 13 laughed and cried as the series came to an end.
Our TV Fanatics, Jack, Jasmine, and Christine, rate the series finale, debate Gary's end-of-life plan, and decide which storylines they want to see more of.
And what did they think about that 15-year flash forward? Read on to find out.
Rate this series finale from 1 (I hated it) to 10 (it was amazing).
Jack: I'm giving it a 7. Honestly, I wasn't sure if I could get through it after last week. Watching the first half of Gary's death was so painful and overly realistic, and I was Not looking forward to more of that.
But the ending tied many things together nicely, had the friends come together one last time to handle the end of Gary's life, and had his beautiful narration 15 years in the future. So it was a very good...

A.V. Rockwell’s directorial debut will stay with you. You’ll find your intrusive thoughts, your most zoned-out subconscious, to be alarmed by the bittersweet aftertaste this unequivocally numbing love letter to New York City leaves you with. And therein lies the most crucial quality of love, as aptly internalized by Rockwell—to love, one must acknowledge all that has gone terribly wrong. To love a place is to entwine one’s heart with the people and the communities that, despite their passionate efforts, are crushed under the draconian changes that benefit the privileged and the insistent neglect that rips off the ones who are battling all-encompassing scarcity to put food on the table and be the best that they can be. The strikingly enthralling Inez, the innately sensitive Terry, and the lovable screw-up Lucky in “A Thousand and One” may not be real people in a literal sense, but...

A Thousand and One is one of the most high-profile indie movies of the year after winning the Grand Jury Prize at the most recent Sundance Film Festival. The story is universal and timeless. It’s also rooted in the specific milieu of Harlem, New York in the late ’90s and early 2000s.
Recreating this location was vital to writer and director A.V. Rockwell during the planning and production of A Thousand and One. She went to great lengths to ensure the movie’s setting was as realistic as the characters.

Focus Features’ Sundance Grand Jury Prize winner A Thousand And One opened to a solid $1.8 million at 926 theaters — $1,942 per theater average — supported by a 96% Rotten Tomatoes critics’ score and a B+ CinemaScore. It came no. 7 at the domestic box office, a strong showing for a complex, gritty film in a slow-to-recover specialty market.
“The fantastic critical response coupled with Teyana’s raw, powerhouse performance gives us confidence this film will continue to resonate with audiences across the country,” said Lisa Bunnell, Focus Features President of Distribution.
New York was the top market, overperforming with 18% of sales so far this weekend. Atlanta, D.C., Chicago and Philadelphia also have stronger than usual market shares for the debut feature from video and short film director A.V. Rockewell. Written and directed by A.V. Rockwell, “A Thousand and One” tells the story of a young Black woman named Inez (Teyana Taylor), and her son Terry (Aaron Detola), as they seek to recreate their image and build their own definition of home and family during New York City’s mid-90s restructuring era.
What do two crooks know about building a family? That’s the question Lucky (William Catlett) poses in one of the scenes from the film. They are victims of their circumstances and natives of a city that has long mistreated people who look like them. Sharing similar backgrounds, the two come together after Inez takes Terry from the foster care system to give him the life she never had, and though Lucky initially never wanted to be Terry’s father, he eventually warms up to the idea and steps in to fill the role.

“A Thousand and One” is the story of a Black woman named Inez who has just been released from Rikers Island and reconnects with her 6-year-old son Terry, who has been kept in the foster care system. At the risk of losing him again, she decides to abduct him and rebuild their life together in New York City as the home they’ve always known changes around them.
Teyana Taylor, starring in the role of Inez in A.V. Rockwell’s feature film directorial debut “A Thousand and One,” was a “leap of faith” decision the writer-director said she’s “proud” she made in a recent discussion with TheWrap.
“Even in those first readings, I could feel it. I could feel how much [Taylor] understood this woman because either she was her or she knew her,” Rockwell said. “I think all of that work we did, all those conversations, it shows up on screen.

Like many listeners of her music, soulful contemporary R&b ballads with a romantic lyricism, Teyana Taylor is feeling blessed. A sultry-voiced singer and songwriter who once choreographed for Beyoncé, Taylor proved herself a true impresario with a searing debut performance in A.V. Rockwell’s Sundance winner “A Thousand and One.”
In the impressive debut feature, Taylor plays a single mother named Inez who stops at nothing to keep her young son in her custody. Set over the course of 15 years in Harlem, Taylor shows remarkable range, charisma, and restraint throughout the film’s sweeping narrative.
Though she’s appeared onscreen before, it was usually in dance films like “Honey” or reality shows “The Masked Singer.” With her luminous turn as Inez, Taylor firmly announces herself as a major dramatic acting talent. A cunning performer and major musical talent, while Taylor found massive success as a recording artist, she always nursed dreams of acting.

And we're back to form with an hour more cemented and cohesive than A Million Little Things Season 5 episode 7.
We got some movement in A Million Little Things Season 5 Episode 8, which mostly touched on many of the characters' story arcs for the season, which is a plus as we hurdle toward the series finale.
Although Maggie, Professor Kraft, and Rome were in some type of competition over who could be the most annoying.
They've relied heavily on Inez to be the supportive older figure in Maggie and Gary's life as they continue to navigate parenthood and their jobs.
Inez has been worked into their home, but it has some difficulties.
It's mainly due to Maggie, who struggles with Inez's presence and what it says about her as a mother, that she's leaving Javi to return to work.
In some ways, I'd like to revisit Maggie's parents or even work in...

Paramount and Hasbro eOne with the greatest of intentions have created an extremely fun, broad-audience appealing feature take on the classic roleplaying game, entitled Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, which already is 90% certified fresh on Rotten Tomatoes –not an easy feat with a genre movie of this caliber– and 94% with moviegoers.
Paramount blasted the movie appropriately so out of SXSW on its opening night to a great response, and they’ve screened the pic extensively including a partnership with Amazon in the walk-up to its opening. However, tracking hasn’t been kind to the $150M production, 50% co-financed by eOne, only seeing a $30M-$40M start stateside. The hope is that walk-up business off the hot word of mouth will overindex this movie at 3,850 theaters, which inherits all the premium theaters from Lionsgate’s John Wick: Chapter 4.

There are eight million stories in the naked city — the saga of Inez de la Paz is just one of them.
A Thousand and One wants you to pay attention to this particular tale, however, and to give her experience its due. This woman could be anybody. But as A.V. Rockwell’s movie insistently reminds you, she is somebody. Attention deserves to be paid. It’s 1994, and Inez (Teyana Taylor) has just finished a bid at Rikers Island. She’s returned to Brooklyn, with the idea of either getting her...
