When director Tim Story’s horror comedy The Blackening was released back in June, co-writer and star Dewayne Perkins told Variety that he envisioned the film being the start of a franchise, one that could bring back the “same group, sprinkle in some new people. I feel like we’ve got something good, and I love the dynamic, but fresh blood always turns things up a little bit.” Now Variety has confirmed that a sequel to The Blackening is officially in development!
The Blackening didn’t exactly set the box office of fire, earning just $18.5 million… but since the movie had a budget of $3 million (plus another $2 million for marketing), that’s enough for producer MRC and domestic distributor Lionsgate to feel that it’s worth going back to for a sequel. They’re developing the follow-up with Perkins, co-writer Tracy Oliver, and producer E. Brian Dobbins.

Indiewire explains, “Michael Cera stars as a scientist who tasks his employees with a “historic” mission to travel back in time to revise history and save the world.”

Command Z will be released in eight parts, with Roy Wood Jr. and Liev Schreiber also starring.

One of the year’s most infectious horror comedies, The Blackening, arrives in theaters this Friday, June 16, 2023.
The Blackening centers around a group of Black friends who reunite for a Juneteenth weekend getaway only to find themselves trapped in a remote cabin with a twisted killer. Forced to play by his rules, the friends soon realize this ain’t no motherf****** game.
Directed by Tim Story (Ride Along, Think Like A Man, Barbershop) and co-written by Tracy Oliver (Girls Trip, Harlem) and Dewayne Perkins (“The Amber Ruffin Show,” “Brooklyn Nine-Nine”), The Blackening skewers genre tropes and poses the sarcastic question: if the entire cast of a horror movie is Black, who dies first?
The Blackening stars Antoinette Robertson, Dewayne Perkins, Sinqua Walls, Grace Byers, X Mayo, Melvin Gregg, Jermaine Fowler, Yvonne Orji, and Jay Pharoah.

Director Tim Story’s horror comedy The Blackening is said to take place during a Juneteenth weekend getaway, so it’s very fitting that Lionsgate has decided to give the film a wide theatrical release on June 16, 2023 – which happens to be Juneteenth weekend. The Blackening made its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival and Lionsgate came out the winner of a bidding war over the distribution rights with an offer that was said to be (according to Deadline) just short of 20 million.

Lionsgate has come out the winner in a bidding war over the distribution rights to director Tim Story’s horror comedy The Blackening, which made its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival last month. Deadline reported that three offers, which were “just short of 20 million”, were made by potential distributors soon after the premiere screening. Apparently Lionsgate had the most appealing offer on the table. Now they’re planning to give the film a wide theatrical release.

Kimi (2021)There’s a vital undercurrent to recent mainstream American cinema in the form of Steven Soderbergh’s tireless, unassuming productivity.Soderbergh is no stranger to success—either critical or commercial—nor to the upper echelons of studio filmmaking, and yet in the early 2010s he made a shift to a more unassuming way of working. The trigger was a larger, long-gestating seachange across the cinema landscape. The major American studios increasingly turned away from producing a variety of movies, of various sizes, types and expectations, and made fewer films but with ballooning costs and so little leeway for artistic risk. While put out by this great shake-up, Soderbergh embraced another: the medium’s mass digitization. His response has been to stay away from blockbuster projects but also to avoid making work that would obviously comply with the grinds and ploys known as “festival circuit” or “award season,” even if...

Remember when Steven Soderbergh retired from moviemaking? There was a brief moment when the 56-year-old writer-director declared he was done trying to jam his square-peg projects into a one-size-fits-all landscape. The guy who helped kickstart the Sundance Revolution, who reinvented himself via a meta-masterpiece (we’re talking about Schizopolis and yes, we’re willing to die on this hill) and reinvigorated George Clooney’s career, who’s made movies starring Julia Roberts and a KFC employee from West Virginia (respectively), and made us take Channing Tatum seriously — he was happy to go paint.

It would come as some surprise if any one character actually hears, digests, and applies everything said to them through the course of High Flying Bird, a typically distanced and dense Steven Soderbergh study of institutional malfeasance. That its verbiage, courtesy Moonlight originator Tarell Alvin McCraney, is an even split between street talk and corporate speak would be dense enough were the subject not so specific: not just the NBA or a player and agent’s duties (unique and mutual both given equal ground), but how its individual, all-too-human parts work amidst a league-wide lockout putting everybody on edge. Words, chewed by a cast like a too-tough steak, flow ceaselessly until a key term or turning point–”protocol” and “lockout” to establish arguments, “you thought” as a sharpened stopper–take us back to earth, briefly, until we go again. And it all sounds like the primary recording device was an iPhone.

Zombies, aliens, creepy cults, and the return of The Shape—when I look back at 2018, it’s hard to believe that everything I watched, read, and experienced happened within a 12-month span instead of a 12-year span. In a decade that has been a golden age for horror, 2018 was the best year yet, and I have no doubt that years from now, people will look back at this past calendar year as one of the most fruitful and influential for the horror genre. But that will be decades down the line, and while we’re all still here, comfortably snuggled between horror’s successes of 2018 and the alluring potential of everything to come in 2019, I’d like to take a few moments out of your day to reflect on some of my fondest experiences from what has been a historical high for the genre we all know and love.

30. Michelle Pfeiffer (Where is Kyra?)
A pervading sense of isolation and despair runs through Where is Kyra? and Michelle Pfeiffer carries it all with an emotionally resonant performance of subtlety and deep ache. The story of a woman struggling to make ends make following the death of her mother, Andrew Dosunmu’s drama is keenly attuned to the pressures of living in a city that doesn’t care whether you’re there or not. An Evening with Beverly Luff Linn (Jim Hosking)
Writer-director Jim Hosking seems determined to entertain–and divide. From a segment in The ABCs of Death 2 to his feature debut The Greasy Strangler, it was made crystal clear that Hosking has a fascination for deviants and dark comedy. With An Evening With Beverly Luff Linn, he lands on a sort of strange hybrid between David Lynch and Napoleon Dynamite. Incorporating the uncanny valley of the former and the indie ineptitude of the latter, the result is an off-kilter, at times hilarious film that nevertheless loses some of its impact as it stumbles through its own delirium. – Mike M.

Steven Soderbergh’s Unsane, which was released theatrically earlier this year and is now available on Blu-ray and multiple streaming platforms, is yet another of the director’s fascinating experiments with narrative structure and genre, and another instance of Soderbergh responding to cultural shifts with astonishing speed. In this case, as opposed to the 2003 HBO series K Street or Soderbergh’s 2009 film The Girlfriend Experience, some of the relevance seems to be a bit accidental, as Unsane was in the works long before the downfall of Harvey Weinstein and the rise of the #MeToo movement. Yet there’s no denying that screenwriters […]...

Indie FilmBengaluru-based Seby Varghese, the film's director, is an auditor with a passion for filmmaking who was inspired to shoot his debut on the iPhone.Anjana ShekarAward-winning director Steven Andrew Soderbergh, known for films like Erin Brockovich and the Oceans Trilogy, shot Unsane, a psychological thriller starring Claire Foy, entirely on an iPhone 7 Plus. The film released in March of this year and is available to stream online for free. Three years ago, Sean Baker shot the film Tangerine entirely on iPhone 5s, which went on to win several accolades. Progressive filming has reached a point where nothing can deter the storyteller, as long as there’s a narrative. It is precisely this notion which encouraged Seby Varghese to pick up the camera, or in his case an iPhone 7 Plus, to begin shooting what would be India’s first road trip film shot entirely on an iPhone 7 Plus phone. Titled Unfateful, the film’s cast and crew is entirely made up of novices who’ve got little or no experience in the field. Seby himself is in fact an auditor with a passion for filmmaking. “I’m not completely devoid of experience. I’ve made low-budget corporate films and I did a one-month internship with Nirvana films to perfect the craft,” says the Bengaluru-based director. A trip to Gokarna with friends inspired him to shoot a road trip film and the iPhone came in purely by chance. “It is half the price of a Dslr and when my friend Karthik got an iPhone 7s we decided to use the phone for filming,” he says, “I also found the car I wanted to use by chance at a friend’s house. It all fell into place.” Seby then plunged into two months of research and in April 2017 applied for a nine-month sabbatical from work. While his entire crew is based out of Chennai, his cast comprises of actors from Chennai and Bengaluru. Covering over 15,000 kilometers, the film has been shot across the states of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Andhra Pradesh. Unfateful revolves around four strangers who end up carpooling together on a journey. Following a script-less approach, Seby says that works by directors like Ridley Scott, Satyajit Ray and Sean Baker inspired him to work on the movie. “Sanal Kumar Sasidharan’s Ozhivudivasathe Kali is one of the most important Indian films and also my main inspiration. Film’s like Robert Rodriguez’s El Mariachi and Christopher Nolan’s Following made me wonder how they were able to pull of such brilliant films with a very little budget,” says Seby. While making a film is no easy task, coming from a completely different background also has its own advantages says Seby, “Having no knowledge in the field gives you a unique perspective. I know no boundaries and everything is an experiment.” The team has spent a little over 25 days shooting, which was split into three schedules. With its production completed, Seby is now looking to raise funds to work on post-production of the movie. “The film comes to life in the editing and we need ten lakhs to complete it. So far we’ve shelled out 15 lakhs for the film’s production,” says Seby adding, “This kind of experimental filming may not have been possible 20 years ago but things have progressed for the better, so much now, it's very encouraging.” The film’s crew is made up of Ajay Siva, Karthick Raj, Anmi Elizabeth, Aakash Poojith and Jophina Joseph while its cast comprises of Sharath Prakash, Janavi Nagarajan, Aakash Mohanty from Mumbai, Bharat Simha, Sanjith Ballal, and Darshan Shankar. Seby has started an online crowdfunding campaign to complete the rest of his film and those wishing to contribute can do so here. Steven Soderbergh’s return to the big screen has been coming off in a big way as he’s released Logan Lucky and Unsane in the past 8 months. Now he’s setting his sights on the infamous Panama Papers story for his next project, and will be titled The Laundromat. The story will focus on the leak of 11.5 million papers, take that number in for a moment, that were leaked by the Panamanian law firm and corporate service provider Mossack Fonseca. In fact Panamanian officials strongly protested the use of their country’s name in the scandal long ago as it was

A Quiet Place has just hit theaters, but we’re not going to stay silent about it on the latest episode of Cinemaholics. This new horror film unexpectedly directed by John Krasinski (who also stars in the movie with his actual spouse, Emily Blunt) is getting almost universal praise from critics and fans alike and we brought on special guest Rebecca Pahle to raise some commotion over the film.
As always, we spend some time diving into other notable releases this week, too, including Blockers, which stars Leslie Mann, John Cena and Ike Barinholtz. This is yet another studio comedy getting most people laughing, but not all of the Cinemaholics are quite on the same page about the pic.
Early in the show, Jon also teases some of his thoughts on the movies coming out at San Francisco Film Festival, including Won’t You Be My Neighbor, Searching and The Miseducation of Cameron Post.

"Think of your cell phone as your enemy."–Uncredited character from UnsaneThe never-really-retired Steven Soderbergh has “returned” from the realm of television with two inspired—and utterly dissimilar—theatrical features. Logan Lucky found the director working in the caper genre for the first time since Ocean’s Thirteen (2007) but with a distinctly Southern flavor. While that was tinged with typically unconventional choices, it’s his latest film in which Soderbergh’s idiosyncrasies are on full display. Shot secretly on an iPhone on the cheap (relatively speaking) and announced only a few months before its premiere at the Berlin International Film Festival in February, Unsane is his most unabashedly pulpy film and yet fits in aesthetically with his earliest digital explorations, Bubble (2005) and The Girlfriend Experience (2009).The opening of the film sets the tone for what is a surprising and expressive experiment, a blued out eerie shot that unevenly creeps through...

Sometimes love can be blind, and other times it can be downright deadly. In Steven Soderbergh's new movie Unsane, Joshua Leonard plays a man who could potentially be stalking a young woman trapped in a mental institution. A claustrophobic character-centric thriller that's eerily plausible, Unsane is out now in theaters, and Daily Dead had the great pleasure of speaking with Leonard about working with Soderbergh, acting in front of an iPhone 7 Plus (which was used to shoot the entire movie), and the similarities and differences between acting in Unsane and The Blair Witch Project nearly 20 years ago.
Thanks for taking the time to talk, and congratulations on the release of Unsane. I can't believe that it's already time for the film to be released.
Joshua Leonard: Yeah, we only made the film in June. It's one of the faster turnarounds. That said, Steven edits while he shoots. The night of the wrap party,...

[This story contains spoilers for Unsane]
Steven Soderbergh has made his name over the past three decades by being willing to try new things. In between making mainstream hits like Contagion and Ocean’s Eleven, Soderbergh has upended expectations by filming a two-part biopic of Che Guevara; and a super-low-budget indie with non-actors in a small town; and an extended homage to the noirs of the 1940s with black-and-white photography, stilted acting and so on. So it’s not shocking that Soderbergh’s latest film is highly experimental: his new thriller Unsane was shot entirely on the iPhone 7 Plus. On one hand,...

Depending on your thoughts about Logan Lucky, it was possible to worry that Steven Soderbergh had hit a bit of a bump in the road last year, but fortunately the director of prized titles like Ocean's Eleven, Magic Mike and Erin Brockovich returns in fine form with Unsane. Starring The Crown's excellent Claire Foy as the most unusually named Sawyer Valentini, Unsane proves to be an utterly fascinating exploration of sanity that well and truly gets you asking questions. Also shot entirely on an iPhone, the restlessly creative Soderbergh definitely manages to push the boat out cinematically too. But whatever you do, do not let this movie's underbaked marketing efforts to dress this film up as an easy-selling horror disappoint you. Unsane isn't a horror at...

Unsane, the new stalker thriller from Steven Soderbergh is the latest film to be shot entirely on a mobile phone. This has, understandably, has been at the forefront of the buzz surrounding this movie, however it should not eclipse the fact that Soderbergh has delivered a thought-provoking and tense film. The film is released in the Us on the 23rd of March, along with the UK release, and we complete our coverage of the film with an interview with two of the film’s stars.
Directed from a screenplay by Jonathan Bernstein and James Greer, the film stars Claire Foy (The Crown), Joshua Leonard (The Blair Witch Project), Jay Pharoah (Ride Along), Juno Temple (Atonement), Aimee Mullins (Stranger Things) and Amy Irving (Traffic).

Steven Soderbergh’s Unsane sacrificially evaluates if Apple’s iPhone videography can sustain a traditional narrative feature (no joke, every single scene). It’s not the first time bulky cameras have been swapped for iPhone recorders – look at Hooked Up or numerous horror anthology entries – but Unsane differentiates itself by ignoring found footage confines. Soderbergh goes guerilla and brings to “life” a psych-ward paranoia thriller with unsettled stalker overtones via smartphone. Always rolling with his handheld device, never breaking from mission. It’s a gamble, and one that shakily opens like a YouTuber who discovered blue gel filters for the first time – never gaining momentum, but not always at the fault of cinematography.

MaryAnn’s quick take… As a piece of craft, this is a smack in the face to Hollywood’s bloated blockbusters. As a piece of pulp, it brings a sharp, smart feminist twist to familiar tropes of cinematic paranoia. I’m “biast” (pro): I’m desperate for movies about women; mostly a fan of Soderbergh’s work

Leave it to Steven Soderbergh to take on sexual predators in the form of a pulp thriller that he shot on an iPhone like a genius kid with a new toy. Unsane is a B-movie by a 55-year-old director known showing his A-game for genre filmmaking – but he's still the same renegade who helped kickstart a revolution with 1989's sex, lies & videotapes, won an Oscar for 2000's Traffic, hit box-office paydirt with three Ocean's Eleven romps and then quit movies for four years to do risky TV like The Knick.

It wasn’t too long ago we had the pleasure of sitting down with Steven Soderbergh for Logan Lucky, and we now had the wonderful opportunity to do it for a second time, this time for his horror flick Unsane, released in cinemas on March 23rd.
Thankfully for us, Soderbergh is a fan of a long interview, surpassing the usual 5-6 minute slots we are usually given – and yet time still flies by, as a filmmaker with a lot to say. This time around we met him in Berlin during the film festival, where the movie received its premiere.
Unsane is shot entirely on an iPhone and we discuss the challenges and benefits to this new means of working, and he explains why he wants to continue to shoot in this way in future projects. He also discusses whether he defines the movie as a horror flick, and what it...

Tagline: "Is She or Isn't She?" A new clip has been released for Steven Soderbergh's (Traffic, 2000) Unsane. The film was shot entirely with an iPhone. Set to show in theatres this March 23rd, the latest clip shows Sawyer (Claire Foy) introduced to her new, crazed roommate. Sawyer best not fall asleep. Unsane also stars: Joshua Leonard (The Blair Witch Project, 1999), Juno Temple (Maleficent, 2014) and Jay Pharoah. The full clip, titled, "Violet," is below. Some longer plot details have been released for Unsane. But, they ruin the film's mystery. It would best to ask: is Sawyer experiencing a delusion? Or, is her stalker real? The answers will have to be uncovered in the halls of a mental institution, where Sawyer has been committed. Both Temple and Foy star in this latest "Violet" clip. Violet has a shank. But, she likely does not have a license to cut hair. Unsane was recently in Berlin,...
