Much of the accolades for Bleecker Street’s “Mass” have centered around Ann Dowd, and deservedly so. But I wanted to take a moment to shine an Oscar spotlight on the equally impressive Martha Plimpton. The Emmy winner (and former Goonie) gives a career-best performance as Gail, the heartbroken mother of a boy who’s killed in a school shooting/bombing. Jason Isaacs takes on the role of Jay, her supportive husband. Dowd and Reed Birney play Linda and Richard, respectively, the guilt-ridden parents of the teenager who caused the murders. In other words, if you haven’t seen “Mass” yet, bring the tissues. You’re gonna need ’em.
SEEAnn Dowd is early Oscars front-runner for ‘Mass’: Will she finally get her due a decade after financing her own campaign?
Fran Kranz wrote, directed and produced this minimalistic film that takes place almost entirely within a small room at a church.

“He destroyed your lives, all of our lives,” Jay (Jason Isaacs) says to Linda (Ann Dowd) and Richard (Reed Birney). He and his wife, Gail (Martha Plimpton), are the parents who lost their son, Evan, to a high school mass shooting. Hayden—Linda and Richard's son—was the one who committed the mass shooting. Mass, an outstanding directional debut from Fran Kranz, leaves you in tears and many reflections on grief, forgiveness, and the United States' gun politics.
It begins with an awkward preparation of a room in a local church. Judy (Breeda Wool) listens to every word of Kendra's advice (Michelle N. Carter). The latter wants to make sure the atmosphere for this unusual meeting is just right. When Gail and Jay arrive and, ten minutes later, they meet Linda and Richard, all bets are off. The anxiety and uncomfortable tension arise from the very moment both families meet.

Set in the meeting room of a modest Episcopalian church, two couples meet under tragic circumstances. For his directorial debut Mass, accomplished actor Fran Kranz is determined to wring out four incredible performances from four incredible character actors through the discussion of an extremely tough subject. It is mission accomplished as Kranz succeeds in finding understanding in the unthinkable.
Not too long ago, there was a school shooting. Richard and Linda’s (Reed Birney and Ann Dowd) son was the shooter. Jay and Gail’s (Jason Issacs and Martha Plimpton) son was one of the victims. After signing a bundle of forms and refusing the press charges, Jay and Gail meet with Richard and Linda in an attempt at closure. What starts as cautious pleasantries quickly turns to passive-aggressive political discourse, then transforming into something resembling the truth. All are a bit confused about what they really want from this meeting,...

“Mass” brings together four grieving mothers and fathers, but two of them are parents of a mass-shooting victim, and the other two are the parents of the shooter. Actor-turned-filmmaker Fran Kranz’s choice of subject matter for his feature debut is certainly timely and provocative, but the emotions are too big and too messily human to fit into the tight box he has constructed to contain them.
World-premiering at Sundance, it’s a film that gives four talented actors lots of meaty material to work through, but Kranz writes himself into a corner where the only way out is via contrivance.
In the meeting room of a church’s basement, Jay (Jason Issacs) and Gail (Martha Plimpton) have come for a face-to-face sit-down with Linda (Ann Dowd) and Richard. Years earlier, Gail and Jay’s son was one of several victims of a school shooting perpetrated by Linda and Richard’s son.

Amy Winehouse, the singer and songwriter who shot to fame with “Rehab,” won five Grammy Awards and sold more than 5 million albums, has died, the Associated Press reported. She was 27.
