Lunar New Year is a key box office period in several Asian territories, but nowhere was it more hotly contested this year than in Vietnam, where several local, Japanese and Hollywood movies were slugging it over the week-long holidays (February 9-15).
Tran Thanh’s Mai, a romantic drama that delves into the psychology of its female protagonist, was the clear winner — at the time of writing it was topping the box office with a haul of VND400BN ($16.4M). Produced by Tran Thanh Town and Cj Hk Entertainment, a joint venture between Korea’s Cj Enm and local outfit HKFilm, the film has the potential to break the record set by Tran Thanh’s own The House of No Man, released this time last year, which is Vietnam’s highest ever grossing film with VND476BN ($19.4m).

In what has become a grim reality of the next phase of the streaming era, 60 movies and television shows have left Disney+ and Hulu. That includes Sundance crowdpleasers like “Timmy Failure,” initially-intended for theatrical releases like “Artemis Fowl” and “The Once and Future Ivan,” big-budget IP adaptations like “Willow” and “Y: The Last Man,” and high-concept YA dramedies like “Stargirl” and “Rosaline.” Once such casualty is “The Princess.”
Released in August of 2022, the original high-concept hybrid of “Die Hard” and “The Raid” features Joey King (star of “The Kissing Booth” trilogy) as a princess trapped in a tower having to fight and kill her way floor-by-floor to save herself and her family from a violent coup attempt. It’s the kind of clever genre exercise that might have been a theatrical release a generation ago. Had it been given a theatrical release, however token, it would also have been available on DVD,...

One of the most time-honored genre setups in history, the haunted house comes about through a nearly-incalculable number of entries that offer up everything, from the glossy mainstream work to the barest indie productions. A mainstay in American and European productions, Asia had tackled the genre with random success with the wild Japanese classic “Hausu” to the traditional Taiwanese effort “The Heirloom,” proving that the genre had staying power around the world. Already tackled before in “The House in the Alley,” director Le-Van Kiet's new film, a box-office smash in Vietnam upon its initial release, will now stream on Screambox from May 2, 2023.

"You saw it, too, didn't you?" Screambox has revealed an official US trailer for a Vietnamese supernatural horror film titled The Ancestral, arriving for streaming next week. It's the latest feature from renowned filmmaker Le-Van Kiet, who also directed the action hit Furie, shark movie The Requin, and Joey King's action movie The Princess. A Vietnamese family moves into a centuries-old ancestral home, only to discover sinister secrets and visions in the old family's ancient crypt. A haunting twist on sleep paralysis and trauma, the film held the top spot at the box office in Vietnam upon release last year. "Horror films that take place in the home, like The Ancestral, are a different level of unsettling, and I'm thrilled to share this terrifying film with our Screambox viewers," Bloody Disgusting's Brad Miska explains. Starring Lâm Thanh Mỹ, Quang Tuấn, Mai Cát Vi, and Dieu Nhi. This looks like...

The third feature directed by Vietnamese superstar Ngo Thanh Van — better known to western audiences as actor Veronica Ngo in “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” and “The Old Guard” — lives up to its title with a furious display of female revenge set in the seedy streets of late-’90s Ho Chi Minh City. Despite a routine plot and some abrasive tonal shifts, this tale of a motherly mentor turning three damaged young women into deadly assassins is packed with exciting action and boasts fine performances from four killers bound by blood, bullets and all manner of deadly weapons. Following a series of rowdy screenings in SXSW’s Midnighters section, “Furies” will stream worldwide as the first Vietnamese Netflix original feature on March 23.
A gritty and often brutal action thriller, “Furies” is reminiscent in tone and texture of old-school Hong Kong heroic bloodshed epics and has a dash of the “indestructible...

We all love Ngô Thanh Vân, better known in the West by her professional name, Veronica Ngô. First introduced to savvy genre film fans in the ‘00s through her kickass collaborations with Johnny Tri Nguyen in The Rebel (Dòng máu anh hung) and Clash, Ngô has continued to make inroads in the outside of her Vietnamese home market with appearances in films like The Last Jedi, The Old Guard, and The Princess. She is a confirmed ass-kicker, with fighting skills that rival any big-time action star of the last two decades. Four years ago, she starred in director Le-Van Kiet’s Furie, at this year’s SXSW she takes...

Exclusive: Following six seasons as Howard Hamlin on AMC’s megahit Better Call Saul, Patrick Fabian has signed on to lead the indie The Way We Speak from writer-director Ian Ebright (From the Sky).
Billed as an allegory about America’s fractured politics and culture, the film follows Simon (Fabian), an up-and-coming commentator whose world is turned upside down when his best friend and debate opponent suffers a fatal heart attack. Simon refuses to leave the spotlight at an annual thought-leader summit, leading to an obsession with his new opponent and a growing rift with his ailing wife, Claire (Law & Order: Special Victims Unit’s Diana Coconubo).
Ebright’s Broken Telegraph is producing the pic, also to star Kailey Rhodes (Black Pool), Ayanna Berkshire (Twilight) and Lowell Deo (Z Nation). Fabian is repped by The Kohner Agency and Essential Talent Management.

The Princess opens with the title character waking up groggy to find herself locked in a tower with only vague memories of how she got there. Within minutes she has to deal with a pair of soldiers with ill intent, both of whom she quite violently dispatches with moves that include a lethal kick and a hairpin through the eye.
As that probably told you, The Princess tosses all notions of historical accuracy, or any kind of accuracy really right out the window. Director Le-Van Kiet takes Ben Lustig (The Thirst) and Jake Thornton’s script and runs with it. After his last two films, he knew he needed to repeat the success of his last hit, the female-fronted action film Furie.

In most stories, a princess trapped in tower will need a man to save her. Joey King’s unnamed Princess isn’t like that. Furie director Le-Van Kiet’s actioner attempts to take a female lead and invert The Raid, with her facing off against a seemingly unending phalanx of enemies as she descends the tower where she’s being held captive, prior to her wedding to the evil and ambitious Julius (Dominic Cooper).
Initially, the presence of Joey King and the fact that this film (in the UK) would be launching on Disney+ made me think it would essentially be Enchanted with swords; a stereotypical Disney princess finally fighting back violently. Kiet and writers Ben Lustig and Jake Thornton lean into this a little in the film’s opening, which springs The Princess’ fighting skills on us when guards come to her room. Even here though, there’s an immediate retreat from anything cartoony,...

In a recent interview about The Princess, Ben Lustig and Jake Thornton, the film’s screenwriters, explain how they came up with the idea for their project. The duo wanted to turn convention on its head, to dream up a story in which a princess defies society’s expectations of her. Lustig, a father, comes off especially keen to insist on this film’s novelty in the brief conversation: “I was like, ‘Okay, here’s all these princess movies. But what if one was a badass?’”
It seems Mulan, Jasmine, Pocahontas, Tiana and most recently Merida don’t count. Maybe they’re not tough and outspoken enough. Maybe their adventures don’t have enough action sequences. Perhaps these young women needed to be more uncompromising, intimidating. Or maybe the lessons their stories teach needed to be more obvious, repeatedly telegraphed and so blunt...

There’s something kind of remarkable about watching a 90-minute film that only has a single idea spread across its entire running time — “what if ‘The Raid,’ but about a fairy tale princess trying to fight her way down from the castle tower where she’s been imprisoned by an evil suitor?” — but my awe at what passes for a movie these days was no match for my disappointment in this one. so undercooked that it feels like an AMC psy-op designed to make you run to the nearest multiplex and beg for a ticket to whatever’s showing next. Even Gru feels good in a place like this.
While survivors of Netflix’s “The Kissing Booth” trilogy may be conditioned to expect as much from the latest Joey King vehicle (though she hardly feels responsible for this mess), anyone familiar with Le-Van Kiet’s bone-crunching “Furie” is liable to...

Practically everybody in “The Princess” has a name, except the princess. Played by “The Kissing Booth” cutie Joey King as an anything-but-passive heroine, the movie’s anonymous eponymous protagonist isn’t a proper character so much as a one-dimensional empowerment symbol: “The Princess” represents the antithesis of every fairy-tale damsel who sat around waiting to be whisked away or married off. She begins the movie locked in the top floor of the castle, wearing a wedding dress and iron shackles, and ends it drenched in more blood than Stephen King’s Carrie, some of it hers, but most belonging to all the men who’ve underestimated her.
Over the course of the next hour and a half, “The Princess” hardly stops to catch its breath. Whatever Disney movies may have led you to believe about royals named Ariel (she sings!) and Belle (she reads!), this one learned Krav Maga behind her father’s back,...

“The Princess” opens on a muddle of well-known fairy tales. The titular royal lies unconscious in an ornate dress, her wavy locks strewn across the pillow. Flowers surround her bed. But unlike Rapunzel, Sleeping Beauty and Snow White, she awakens on her own and proceeds to beat the ever-loving hell out of two brutish guards. Though that opening promises some kind of meaningful subversion, this film has just one brave question to ask: “What if a princess could also kick your ass?”
The shrug-worthy answer – “Then she would probably kick some ass, I guess” – makes for the bulk of this facile, plotless movie.

Um…think again, becuase, this royal heir would stun and surprise at a tea party for the “Disney divas’. After watching this you’ll know that there are few medieval movie heroines quite like The Princess.
Now, when we first meet her, she’s doing the whole “Sleeping Beauty” bit as she sleeps on a fancy feather bed in a room at the top of a castle tower. At...

What do you get when you cross a Disney-style princess fairy tale with Le-Van Kiet, the Vietnamese-born director of the critically-acclaimed, relentlessly-thrilling 2019 revenge flick "Furie?" You end up with "The Princess," an R-rated fantasy action romp for those who have always felt like princess films could use more slow-mo shots and scenes where the heroine beats the snot out of a bunch of armored guards. That's everyone, right?

In a past interview, "Furie" director Le-Van Kiet gave me just one detail about his newest work, "The Princess," which he said would be a cross between "Sleeping Beauty" and "John Wick." Curiosity, had. Attention, gained.
Now that "The Princess" is just around the corner, I sure was fortunate to catch up with Kiet again to dive a bit deeper into the project, a fantasy actioner about a princess (Joey King) having to literally fight her way to freedom after a tyrant (Dominic Cooper) tries to forcibly take her hand in marriage. King is also one of the film's executive producers, alongside Neal...

Joey King isn’t messing around in the first trailer for the new 20th Century Studios film “The Princess.”
In the trailer, which you can watch above, King plays a strong-willed princess whose father tries to force her to marry a cruel sociopath. When she refuses, she’s kidnapped and locked in a remote tower of her father’s castle.
That doesn’t stop her for long though, as she fights her way out of the tower, taking down every knight in her path. Set to the tune of Joan Jett’s “Bad Reputation,” King begins her takedown.
“I’m not a piece of property to be traded,” she says in the clip, adding: “But these guys f—ed with the wrong princess.”

"I'll never stop... until I'm holding your still beating heart." 20th Century Studios has revealed an official trailer for a new action film titled The Princess, a sort of action remix of Rapunzel (and other similar Disney princess stories). The ultimate feminist "update" on these classics, by having her fight back and kick ass. I guess. It's produced by Neal H. Moritz of the Fast and the Furious franchise. When a strong-willed princess refuses to wed the cruel sociopath, she is kidnapped and locked in a remote tower of her father’s castle. With her vindictive suitor intent on taking her father’s throne, the princess must save the kingdom. Joey King stars, with Dominic Cooper, Olga Kurylenko, and Veronica Ngo; directed by Vietnamese filmmaker Le-Van Kiet. This looks super cheesy, which is probably why they are dumping it direct-to-Hulu instead of in theaters. But it might still be entertaining?...

When you think of a classic fairytale, you think of the prince coming to rescue the princess and being happily married. However, not all fairytales have happy endings. From Vietnamese-born action filmmaker director Le-Van Kiet, “The Princess” takes all you know about classic fairytale stories and turns it on its head. The R-rated movie, overseen by 20th Century Studios, will feature Joey King playing the princess. King is known for her roles as Gypsy Rose Blanchard in “The Act” (2019) and “The Kissing Booth” (2018).

Already tackled before in “The House in the Alley,” director Le-Van Kiet’s new film, a box-office smash in Vietnam upon its initial release, now arrives in select US theaters courtesy of T2 Group, LLC.
Moving out to the countryside, Thanh (Quang Tuan) and his daughters Linh (Lam Thanh My) and Yen (Mai Cat Vi) arrive at an ancestral house to get back on their feet following the death of his wife. As they spend time together in the house,...

I could easily rant about Disney using 20th Century Studios as a source of "content" for Hulu and Disney+ and little more, but why do that when /Film's Ryan Scott has already written an excellent piece on that very topic? No, I'm here to tell you about "The Princess," the latest project from the studio formerly known as Fox to skip theaters in favor of releasing straight to streaming. It's an intriguing, original genre film at that, with Joey King (she of "The Kissing Booth" trilogy fame) starring as a "skilled and formidable young royal."

Joey King’s upcoming film “The Princess” has a premiere date on Hulu.
The 20th Century Studios film will drop July 1.
No ordinary story about a princess, King’s film is described as an “action-packed fight to the death set in a fairy tale world.”
Here’s the official logline: When a beautiful, strong-willed princess refuses to wed the cruel sociopath to whom she is betrothed, she is kidnapped and locked in a remote tower of her father’s castle. With her scorned, vindictive suitor intent on taking her father’s throne, the princess must protect her family and save the kingdom.
Le-Van Kiet directs from a screenplay by Ben Lustig and Jake Thornton. King and Guy Riedel are executive producers. Neal H. Moritz (the “Fast and Furious” franchise), Toby Jaffe (“Total Recall”) and Derek Kolstad (“John Wick”) produced the film.

Opens with an oddly “fake” looking scene that feels like it was shot entirely on a green screen soundstage – which for all I know might be true, especially given the copious amounts of CGI featured in the film as a whole… Yes, we’re in CGI shark territory (combined with stock footage – how very The Asylum of this film) in this one folks!
The Requin, aka From Below, stars Alicia Silverstone [Sidebar; who would have thought we’d ever see Alicia Silverstone in a shark movie? Of course, being a shark movie we know things aren’t going to go according to plan for the couple. Kyle gets injured whilst swimming, his blood pouring into the ocean waters like some sort of obvious foreshadowing, whilst Jaelyn has flashbacks to her miscarriage.

"We need to focus on surviving!" Saban Films has revealed the first official trailer for another new shark horror movie titled The Requin, this one made in Vietnam by a Vietnamese filmmaker named Le-Van Kiet. He last made the action film Furie a few years ago. A couple on a romantic getaway to the beach in Vietnam find themselves stranded at sea when a tropical storm sweeps away their villa. In order to survive, they are forced to fight the elements. But soon a school of Great White sharks circle below. This sounds like another "been there, done that" kind of concept, no? But everyone loves shark movies and is always frightened by them. Alicia Silverstone and James Tupper star as the couple, with a small cast including Deirdre O'Connell, Jennifer Mudge, and Danny Chung. This looks terrifying, but also looks like a copy of every other shark survival movie.
