February––particularly its third week––is all about romance. Accordingly the Criterion Channel got creative with their monthly programming and, in a few weeks, will debut Interdimensional Romance, a series of films wherein “passion conquers time and space, age and memory, and even death and the afterlife.” For every title you might’ve guessed there’s a wilder companion: Alan Rudolph’s Made In Heaven, Soderbergh’s remake, and Resnais’ Love Unto Death. Mostly I’m excited to revisit Francis Ford Coppola’s Youth Without Youth, a likely essential viewing before Megalopolis.
February also marks Black History Month, and Criterion’s series will include work by Shirley Clarke (also subject of a standalone series), Garrett Bradley, Cheryl Dunye, and Julie Dash, while movies by Sirk, Minnelli, King Vidor, and Lang play in “Gothic Noir.” Greta Gerwig gets an “Adventures in Moviegoing” and can be seen in Mary Bronstein’s Yeast,...

More than a dozen years (plus some change) since she premiered her feature debut Yeast (a 2008 SXSW Film Festival selection), Mary Bronstein is set to direct her sophomore feature If I Had Legs I’d Kick You. A project that first hit our radar back in 2021 is slowly simmering and moving into a possible August production start date. Casting news should trickle in via the trades shortly. Naturally we have Elara Pictures Safdie Bros. producing alongside Sara Murphy and Ryan Zacarias‘ new shingle, Fat City. A24 will distribute.
We could probably insert Ronald Bronstein (who saw his only feature Frownland hit Criterion last year) in some capacity here and possibly see cinematographer Sean Price Williams re-team with Bronstein.…...

Exclusive: Amazon is exploring the world of teenage girls and shoplifting in its latest comedy pilot.
The streamer has ordered and shot half-hour comedy pilot Lifted starring Ivy Wolk, Veronica Taylor, Kate Godfrey and Annie Marie Elliot.
The project comes from Jawline director Liza Mandelup and Yeast director Mary Bronstein, who have co-created it and write and exec produce. Mandelup will also direct with Heidi Schreck, a Nurse Jackie writer whose Broadway play What the Constitution Means to Me aired on Amazon, exec producing.
A24 is producing with Amazon Studios.
The pilot explores the lives of four geographically, socio-economically, and racially diverse American teenage girls united by an online community built around shoplifting. A commentary on identity and how we communicate now, Lifted follows these young, awkwardly funny characters as they attempt to find themselves, form relationships, and discover their power and purpose.

Chicago – A fascinating documentary on the essence of ardent hockey fanatics is in “The Fan Connection’ by Mary Wall, her debut film. Wall is originally from the Buffalo, New York, area and observed the hope that the Buffalo Sabres NHL hockey team gave the sports crazy city, which resulted in her chronicle in “The Fan Connection.” The film will screen at the Wilmette (Illinois) Theatre on October 7th and 8th, with an appearance by Mary Wall. Click Let’S Go Buffalo for details and a ticket link.
The Rust Belt city of Buffalo yearns to reclaim its lost pride after years of decline. Christine D’Souza Gelb, the veteran independent film financing and sales executive, has launched a new production and management venture with Killer Films executive David Hinojosa and Kevin Rowe as founding partners.
Named 2Am, the venue brings together a trio of considerable indie film players and boasts backing from one of the space’s most premium brands: A24.
The Oscar-winning studio behind titles like “Moonlight” and “Room,” as well as the TV hit “Euphoria,” has invested in the full-service company at an undisclosed share. 2Am will operate independently, insiders said, with no exclusive first look deal with the distributor.
Gelb left Endeavor Content last summer, where she had risen to partner and served as a fixture in brokering some of the most exciting films of the past decade and a half — including titles like Lulu Wang’s “The Farewell,” Ari Aster’s “Midsommar,” Kenneth Lonergan’s Oscar winner “Manchester by the Sea,...

Exclusive: Former Endeavor Content partner Christine D’Souza Gelb has teamed with Killer Films production exec David Hinojosa and manager Kevin Rowe to launch 2Am, a new production and management venture that gets off the ground with backing from A24.
The company launches with designs on managing filmmaker clients, and producing projects primarily in the film and television space. For indie studio A24, this is its first foray in investing in a management concern. Sources said there will be an arms length relationship between the two companies with no first look deal.
The catalyst for the new company is D’Souza Gelb, who spent 15 years at a top agent in film financing and sales as a partner at Endeavor Content, before surprising colleagues last May with an internal note that she would stop being an agent. She wanted to take some time and plot a course change, and early this fall she began putting together 2Am.

Director Adam Wingard has received rave reviews for his R-rated, home invasion horror-comedy You’re Next, which screened at several film festivals over the past couple of years and will be released August 23. But his often gore-drenched creative sensibility — and twisted sense of humor — is not everyone’s cup of Darjeeling. In the spring of 2007, for instance, the then just the 24-year-old Wingard appeared on the premiere episode of Fox TV’s On The Lot, a much-hyped but now little-remembered, Steven Spielberg-produced filmmakers’ competition with the first prize of a million-dollar development deal at Dreamworks. As Wingard recalls, he...

When we watch movies, it's always filtered through our own experiences. I never had pets growing up, so violence against animals never bothers me. But for some folks, it's a deal breaker. I like depressing relationship "comedies" like Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and Lars and the Real Girl and Blue Valentine, but for folks who like sunshine and rainbows, it's a dreary experience. We all watch movies differently, based on how we've lived our lives, and so our reactions are different. But even more so than that, it's how we watch the movies. A comedy watched in a theater full of an appreciative audience might be funnier than when we watch it alone at home during the week. The first film you see with your father or mother in a theater is going to resonate much differently than if you are watching it with a group of friends,...

Michael Tully began his career with a flurry, getting selected for Filmmaker‘s 25 New Faces of Independent Film in 2006 on the back of his debut feature Cocaine Angel, and then following it up the next year with Silver Jew, a documentary about Silver Jews frontman David Berman. In the years since, Tully has stayed active, shooting Mary Bronstein’s Yeast, acting in a handful of movies by fellow Generation Diy peers, including Aaron Katz’s Quiet City and Ry Russo-Young’s You Won’t Miss Me, and editing the indie film website Hammer to Nail. But, in terms of new films, he has kept his head below the parapet.
Now, however, he’s back with his second narrative feature, Septien, a fantastically idiosyncratic tale in which he plays the lead role of Cornelius Rawlings, an athletically-gifted prodigal son who after an unexplained 18 year absence returns to the family farm where his two brothers,...

With Mary Bronstein's Yeast debuting on DailyMotion tonight, and Joe Swanberg's Nights and Weekends opening this weekend at the IFC Center, the two SXSW 2008 premieres starring Greta Gerwig will suddenly become available to a non-festival audience simultaneously. When I heard this was going to happen, I dug up some of the press Gerwig has garnered over the past year, most of it pegged to her appearance in the Duplass brothers' Baghead. I quickly noticed a trend: Gerwig has been covered exhaustively by male writers who a) have a tendency to label her an "ingenue" or an "'it' girl", and b) devote much column spac ...
