There’s a classic sound to heist films, especially of the ’60s and ’70s – a little jazzy, a little stealthy, occasionally raucous and wild – and composer Daniel Pemberton cleverly channels it throughout “The Bad Guys,” the DreamWorks Animation action comedy that opens today.
“The film in some ways is an homage to classic caper movies,” says the English composer, “and it’s a world I really love playing in. You get to be really bold: big breaks, big brass sections, big tunes and big grooves.”
Pemberton’s high-energy music sets the mood and drives the action in Pierre Perifel’s animated adventure about a notorious criminal gang that considers going straight after they cross paths with a guinea-pig philanthropist and their red-fox governor.
“At its core, it’s a very joyous score, even though there’s sneakiness, tension, all that kind of stuff,” he notes. He cites Quincy Jones’ “The Italian Job,...

The race for best original song at this year’s Academy Awards includes a number of big name recording artists whose work for film has been generating significant Oscar buzz.
In past years the category has seen a number of popular, chart-topping performers take home the statuette, including John Legend and Common’s “Glory” from last year’s best picture nominee Selma, about Martin Luther King’s historic march for civil rights and 2013’s “Skyfall”, performed and co-written by British songstress Adele with co-writer Paul Epworth, for the 007 film of the same name.
This year another James Bond theme is in the hunt for best original song, as Sam Smith’s “Writing’s on the Wall”, co-written with accomplished British songwriter James Napier (a.k.a. Jimmy Napes), the Spectre title track that became the first No. 1 in Bond theme history, has earned a Golden...

It’s reassuring that even after spending a large chunk of 2015 making radio-ready pop music with the likes of Justin Bieber, Skrillex can still throw down a set of bone-rattling bass music when the situation calls for it.
Now that Edc Brasil has wrapped up, a direct recording of his performance at the festival has begun making its rounds on social media, and it’s definitely worth watching. Mixing grating bass wobbles with saccharine melodies and borderline chipmunk-esque vocals in the style that Skrillex is known for, the performance succeeded in energizing the thousands-deep crowd in attendance on the evening he played.
Replete with remixes and edits of tracks from the likes of of Avicii, Fetty Wap and A$AP Ferg as well as a whole host of originals, his set made for a spirited return to the style that made him famous back in 2010-2011.

There’s a very simple reason why Steve Angello‘s Wild Youth will be remembered as one of the strongest albums of 2015: It doesn’t sound like anything else on the market right now.
Being that it’s his first full-length album since the 2013 disbanding of his supergroup, Swedish House Mafia, he could have gone the route of his former collaborators and released the hard-kicks-and-hoover-synths progressive house that floods festival main stages worldwide. Given the scene’s current obsession with all things underground, he could also have surrendered himself to whatever whatever deep or tech variety of hipster house is currently being lauded as the second coming of Christ. Instead, Wild Youth Chapter 1 sounds like an evolution of the Edm sound Angello played no small role in shaping that neither betrays nor seeks refuge in the creative legacy he’s already left behind.

His label, Owsla, has shed light on a versatile collection of non-cookie-cutter Edm rock stars like Porter Robinson, Zedd and Dillon Francis. So when Skrillex recently offered to introduce MTV News to two underground acts, we jumped at the opportunity.

Though Skrillex walked into Sunday (February 12) night's Grammys having already won three categories during the pre-telecast ceremony earlier in the day, he did not have a chance to give a big acceptance speech before taking to the red carpet.
The Edm DJ and producer spoke with MTV News for the second time in the evening and got to deliver his previously untelevised acceptance speeches, which Skrillex delivered after being confused by stage directions. "I was trying to walk off stage, and I didn't understand," he said. "Someone was yelling at me. Then I had to go back on. It was just crazy.
"I had three speeches that were all kind of weird and all over the place," he continued.

Or maybe it was when Martin Solveig's "Hello" was suddenly on repeat on your iPod. Whatever your moment was, it's fair to say the American appetite for electronic dance music surged in 2011, bringing "the rave" to radio and festivals, touching every U.S. city (big and small). Even Grammy voters took notice this year, nominating Skrillex for Best New Artist and in four other categories.
