He may have cracked the prestigious Bits entrance but during his time there, what interested him more was writing plays and sketching. He soon realised, not Thermodynamics but looking inside people’s minds interested him. And that is when he decided to do an animation course in Singapore next.
Filmmaker Ishan Shukla, whose dystopian sci-fi animation film ‘Schirkoa: In Lies We Trust’, which will have its world premiere at the prestigious 53rd International Film Festival of Rotterdam (IFFR) smiles, “Well, it may sound all cool now, but believe me, I was really worried that time — what if I don’t get a job after the animation course? Of course, I don’t generally admit that,” he tells Ians.
While he did get a job in Singapore, in less than a year it started getting boring for him.

Known for originality in his stories and story telling, for presenting unexplored themes in a commercial format, ‘Chup’ is filmmaker R Balki’s most ambitious film till date. Ambition not in big budget terms but in scale of thought. Releasing on 23rd September, 2022, it’s a romantic psychopath thriller, a thought he had after ‘Cheeni Kum’ and decided to write it much later. The poster revealing the release date released today.
Speaking of the same R Balki said, “Chup is special for more than one reason. For me the biggest reason is it marks the official debut of Amitabh Bachchan as a music composer. Amitji saw Chup and played an instinctive original melody on his piano as he relived the film. It was his way of expressing his feelings for the film, paying a tribute. This composition, his gift to the film, will be the end title track of Chup.

ReviewNivin is so good as ‘bhai’, it’s hard to believe it’s the same actor who’s known for his softer, light-hearted roles.CrisGeetu Mohandas’s Moothon begins with a song by the sea. You don’t see the singer but you recognise the familiar voice of Nivin Pauly. And then you wait for a long time before you hear him again. It’s till then the story of Mulla (Sanjana Dipu), a child growing up in Lakshadweep, feeling lost and in search of an elder brother – moothon – who left the shore years ago. And at the end of the brilliantly filmed Moothon, it is this child’s face and story that somehow sticks. The others seem like an extension of Mulla’s tale. As the story moves from Lakshadweep to Mumbai, Nivin Pauly enters the scene wearing the long ‘jubbas’ that men in the city typically wear on screen.

Ryuichi Sakamoto, the Japanese composer who will this week be honored as the Asian Filmmaker of the Year in Busan, will head the jury for the best original score prize at the Asia Pacific Screen Awards. Also on the jury are Indian composer and music director Sneha Khanwalkar (“Gangs of Wasseypur”) and Australian composer, conductor and musician Nigel Westlake (“Babe,” “Paper Planes”).
The five nominees are: Eleni Karaindrou for “Bomb, A Love Story” (aka “Bomb, Yek Asheghaneh”) (Iran); Harry Gregson-Williams for “Breath” (Australia); Hildur Guonadottir, Johann Johannsson for “Mary Magdalene” (Australia, U.K.); Ryan Cayabyab for “The Portrait” (aka “Ang Larawan”) (Philippines); and

Bombay in 1946 was an epicentre for the cry for freedom from the British Raj. Lots of now famous and some infamous things happened during this time. One of these is the story of the biopic of the Urdu Bollywood scriptwriter Saadat Hasan Manto, played by Nawazuddin Siddiqui. Manto, written, directed and produced by Nandita Das, tells his story through the eyes of those around him. This film has already been acclaimed at Cannes and was recently released to Indian audiences on the 21st of September.
The music direction of the movie has been given to Sneha Khanwalkar. Already well known for the Gangs of Wasseypur franchise and Detective Bymokesh Bakshy! amongst others, her gritty and real-life music is often perfect for the period, without needing to take the audience back to it. In this film its important to realise that the music is pre-Lata Mangeshkar when the giants were Shamshad Begum and Noor Jehan,...

Forty-four were invited to join the music branch of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences, including Kendrick Lamar, whose contributions to the “Black Panther” soundtrack are riding high on the album charts; songwriter Melissa Etheridge, who won an Oscar for her song for “An Inconvenient Truth”; and recent Oscar nominees Dustin O’Halloran and Hauschka (“Lion”), Sufjan Stevens (“Call Me By Your Name”), Carlinhos Brown (“Rio”) and Benoit Charest (“The Triplets of Belleville”).

“My stories are mirrors for society to see itself,” asserts author Saadat Hasan Manto (Nawazuddin Siddiqui), on trial for obscenity. Dramatizing Manto’s struggles as he excoriates humanity during the most tumultuous time on the Indian Subcontinent, actress-filmmaker Nandita Das’ “Manto” is elegant and old school, epic without losing sight of the personal. However, Das’ heavily expository style is almost too respectable to do justice to the scathing and sexually provocative nature of Manto’s short stories, considered some of the most powerful in the Urdu language. Siddiqui, the chameleon actor of “The Lunchbox” and “Gangs of Wasseypur” gives a tour-de-force portrayal of the writer’s intellect as well as his very human flaws.
“Manto” could garner support among the educated bourgeois crowd in India and Pakistan who likely know the protagonist’s life and oeuvre well; the film’s high-mindedness might not be as readily appreciated by general audiences abroad.

Indian literature and mythology is very rich but it is a wasted legacy because the youth of today are oblivious to it. But Hanuman Da Damdaar is all set to give a new lease to the Hanuman Chalisa.
While the film is touted to be the biggest animation venture in Bollywood with names like Salman Khan, Raveena Tandon, Javed Akhtar and more associating with it. All those who have heard the soundtrack of the film, insist that Sneha Khanwalkar’s work will be a big hit! To begin with her version of the Hanuman Chalisa is something that will bring the chalisa-chant right into the hearts of your little ones, “Sneha has managed to keep the essence and yet make it so upbeat that it will easily get picked up by the kids, that’s the whole purpose of it, make the chant a household affair,” quipped the spokesperson of R.

Before I watched the film, I had heard comments like “Indian epic,” “one of the best Asian films ever produced,” “a true masterpiece” and other similar characterizations, which usually make me suspicious, to say the least. However, in this case, every dithyramb was absolutely true as “Gangs of Wasseypur” is one of the best gangster films ever produced.
The script, which stretches over 5 hours, tells the story of the family of Khans over 5 generations and their adventures in the city of Wasseypur, where mafia wars and lawlessness seem to be the rule. Starting in the 40s with Shahid Khan, the story then moves on Sardar Khan, who found his apogee in the 70s, and ends with one of his sons, Faizal, and Definite, Sardar’s son from a different woman. Throughout all these years, the archenemy of the family remains Ramadhir, a corrupt official who starts as a trade union...

The highlight of any Sherlock Holmes story is never the story itself. When you look deep enough, there is always a dot point path that will lead to the solution for any puzzle. The allure of the clues and the unconventional mix of various fields from science to mythology. These form the highlight. All that forms the brilliance that is Sherlock Holmes and the madness as well, is but the stepping stones for Detective Byomkesh Bakshi as written by Sharadindu Bandyopadhyay. Even as Holmes overwhelmed the world, this Bengali Babu still had his own quirks and traits which made the stories and subsequent TV show so successful.
So with reliance so heavily on its main character for both stories, the casting director has a major pair of shoes to fill for this feature film adaption. Sushant Singh Rajput tries very hard to step into Byomkesh Bakshy. It may be a...

Youngistaan follows the life of Abhimanyu (Jackky Bhagnani of F.A.L.T.U fame) who unexpectedly finds himself in the political spotlight after the sudden death of his father, the Prime Minister of India (Boman Irani – 3 Idiots). The film has been in the media of late due to Bhagnani’s styling in the film being a dead ringer for Rahul Gandhi’s wardrobe, as well as being the last film featuring the late Farooque Shaikh. Moreover, Youngistaan also marks another notch in Bhagnani’s continuous attempts to carve a niche for himself in the industry.
The soundtrack features 4 songs, composed by Jeet Ganguly (Aashqui 2), Shiraz Uppal, Sneha Khanwalkar (Gangs of Wasseypur), Shree D and Ishq Bector (Besharam). Lyrics have been penned by Ahmad Afzal, Shakeel Sohail, Kausar Munir and Jackky Bhagnani.

Sneha Khanwalkar, indeed, would feel proud about the fact that her quest to discover new voices through her album: 'Sound Tipping' has led to the discovery of Noorah sisters who make their debut in Imtiaz Ali's Highway and through their rustic voice, they have been able to create a buzz about the film. Obviously, it is A. R. Rahman who has brought in all his skills of giving an esoteric twist to the genre of Sufi music- as he has done in 'Patakha Guddi'- the song from H...

As part of our look at a century of Indian cinema, here are some of our all-time favourite classic film soundtracks
Barsaat (1949)
Tragic love story Barsaat (Rain) was 25-year-old actor Raj Kapoor's first hit as a director and launched Bollywood's greatest playback singer Lata "Nightingale of India" Mangeshkar (who went on to record thousands of film songs over a career spanning seven decades and counting). Kapoor may have made finer films (Awaara, Shree 420), but Barsaat's songs (marking the debut of music directors, Shankar Jaikishan) of vulnerability, innocence and heartache, captured newly independent India's fragile imagination. Many consider Barsaat to have the greatest film songs of all time.
Pakeezah (1972)
Pakeezah (Pure) is the story of a courtesan, or a wronged woman with a good heart, in the Mughal era. Lata is on playback duties for heroine Meena Kumari (who died just after its release) and the combination of real-life...

Nomadic music composer Sneha Khanwalkar who wowed listeners with her new-age sound in Gangs Of Wasseypur has been missing from action in spite of all the raves and wah-wahs for her eclectic sound that she culled and collected from all across the world. In fact producers desirous of the most innovative music composer of Indian cinema since A R Rahman have been wondering where to find the Wasseypur ki Womaniya. Well, now it can be told. The shy Sneha has been out of circulation since March because of her fractured arm. Says Sneha, "Can you believe it? On Women's Day (March 8) I fell right on my right hand. 2012 saw many entertaining and powerful films surfacing from Bollywood, which have acquired both critical and commercial recognition. A number of them have now been nominated for the prestigious Filmfare Awards, which are considered to be Bollywood’s equivalent to the Oscars. It feels like only yesterday that the last Filmfare Awards took place!
This year is very, very special, since 2013 marks 100 years of Indian cinema. Filmfare are aware of this and have ensured that this year’s award trophies are in gold in order to mark this once in a lifetime occasion. Some of the films which have garnered nominations thoroughly deserve it and we hope that they will go onto win big at the 58th ceremony, which officially takes place at Yash Raj Films Studios on 20th January 2013.
Bollyspice would like to congratulate all the nominees, whose hard work and determination to entertain the audiences has secured them a Filmfare nomination.

Many of the songs brought a new vibe to the music of the movies, songs flavored with new influences, and songs that we never would have thought we would hear in a Bollywood flick. There were classic beats that got us up and dancing not to mention the grooves of today that got us to move to the music. We met some new singers we can’t wait to hear more of and some of our favorites blew us away with outstanding vocals. 2012 was full of surprises and we enjoyed so many of them, 50 in fact and every single note! As always we loved these songs when they first came out but once we saw them in the movie we loved them even more! Check out...

New Delhi, Sep 30: It's hard to remember the last time a Hindi film song resonated to the clear sound of a harmonium or a flute, thanks to the introduction of technologically advanced synthesisers and other recording equipment. But many composers are now striving to bring back the lost charm of raw Indian music.
Composers like Sneha Khanwalkar and Ajay-Atul or Indian Ocean's vocalist Rahul Ram have experimented by bringing back the rawness.
