Reports that Wes Anderson was aiming for a scaled-back cast for espionage thriller The Phoenician Scheme may well have been off the mark.
When reports first surfaced that Wes Anderson’s next film would be an espionage thriller, minds were left agog pondering what he was actually up to. After all, Anderson used the iconography of 1950s sci-fi films to unveil something far more intricate with 2023’s Asteroid City, so who knows what Anderson’s good old spy movie could secretly be a Trojan horse for?
One early report we did hear suggested that for this film, Wes Anderson would be scaling back his cast and not working in the same ensemble-driven way that he so often does. That report now looks like it could have been wide of the mark (or perhaps things simply evolved) as the full cast list for the film has now been released and well,...

Charlotte Gainsbourg, a newcomer to the world of Wes Anderson, will be playing “first wife” in the film, presumably in relation to Benicio del Toro’s character. Just prior to the season finale episode, which will be released tonight on AppleTV+, the show Shantaram starring Charlie Hunnam has been axed by the streaming service. Stantaram is based on the lengthy 900-plus page novel by Gregory David Roberts and had a huge production with the ambitious, epic scope of shooting across two continents. Both of which had been impacted by the Covid pandemic.
The series started filming its first season, but production came to a pause in February 2020 when the pandemic was taking shape. Since the show filmed in multiple countries, production was not able to resume until May 2021 for the remaining ten episodes of the season. Deadline reports that the show hadn’t quite taken off as much as the streaming service’s more popular titles, such as The Morning Show and Ted Lasso.

Charlie Hunnam's return to the Sons of Anarchy universe might happen sooner than you think.
Deadline reported this week that the star's TV comeback vehicle, Shantaram, has been canceled after just one season.
The cancellation comes just ahead of its first season finale.
No reason for the cancellation has been given, but the show hasn't reached the level of success as some of its Apple TV+ counterparts.
Many of the streaming services still keep viewership statistics under wraps, and the expansive nature of Shantaram certainly makes us think it was an expensive series to produce.
The show is described as "a hopeful cinematic love story coupled with a thrilling epic adventure that follows one man's journey to redemption through a country that changes his life."
It follows a fugitive named Lin Ford (Hunnam) looking to get lost in vibrant and chaotic 1980s Bombay.

Actor Charlie Hunnam-starrer series ‘Shantaram’ will not be returning for a second season.
Its Season 1 finale, released tomorrow, December 16, will serve as a series finale, reports ‘Variety’.
Based on the Gregory David Roberts’ epic, 900-plus-page novel, Shantaram was an ambitious, big-scope undertaking, shot across two continents, which was impacted by the pandemic.
The series had shot two episodes before pausing filming in late-February 2020. Because of its expansive nature requiring filming in multiple countries, the series did not resume production on the remaining 10 episodes until May 2021.

The season finale for Apple TV+‘s original series Shantaram is slated to arrive on December 16, and in the exclusive clip above, things look to be getting heated between Charlie Hunnam‘s Lin Ford and Gabrielle Scharnitzky’s Madame Zhou. The footage showcases Lin and Zhou face to face with each other, one has a bag presumably full of money, while the other is holding captive Karla (Antonia Desplat) and Lisa (Elektra Kilbey). Zhou begins the negotiation with hostile words, teasing Lin that his love for Karla may be one-sided. “To be honest, it’s hard to tell,” Lin whispers coldly. “Either way, you have something I want; I have something you want.” When someone yells that there’s nothing in the bag, Lin replies, “It’s not about what’s in; it’s about what I took out of it.” He then gains control of the tradeoff by demanding...

If you enjoy watching talented actors situated in foreign lands, drenched in cosmetically applied sweat, opining in borderline-comical accents about second chances, Apple TV+’s Shantaram is likely to be your favorite new show of the fall.
Breathlessly awaited for nearly two decades by countless people who bought Gregory David Roberts’ epic tome to read on an airplane but never quite finished it, Shantaram has the insufferable trappings of yet another white savior story about a damaged guy whose quest for self-actualization leads him to an exotic place where superficial lessons about a previously unknown spiritual system help him and basically nobody else around him. Ok, it doesn’t just have the trappings of one of those stories. It is one of those stories.

Plot: Based on the internationally best-selling novel by Gregory David Roberts, “Shantaram” follows a fugitive named Lin Ford looking to get lost in vibrant and chaotic 1980s Bombay. Alone in an unfamiliar city, Lin struggles to avoid the trouble he’s running from in this new place. Review: Since its publication in 2003, Shantaram has been in various states of development with everyone from Johnny Depp and Peter Weir to Mira Nair and Joel Egerton involved. Repurposed from a feature film to a series in 2018 by Apple as one of their first international productions. Led by Charlie Hunnam in his first series role since the end of Sons of Anarchy, Shantaram has gone through a few showrunners and the Covid-19 pandemic before finally making it to screens this month.

“Bombay felt exhilaratingly free, a place where everyone started new.” That’s Lin Ford, played by Charlie Hunnam, speaking to us in voice-over about the city where he hopes to begin again. Today known as Mumbai, the Indian metropolis is many things; on “Shantaram,” it’s the staging ground for a white fugitive to lose and find himself. It’s that dynamic that tends to frustrate over the course of a long season.
Based on the novel by Gregory David Roberts and executive produced by Steve Lightfoot, “Shantaram” is set in the 1980s, in the wake of Lin’s prison break. Making his way out of an Australian penal institution in the pilot episode, Lin, a recovering heroin addict, seeks to disappear into a city of millions before, potentially, moving on, but is perpetually drawn toward an intriguing, possibly amoral woman named Karla (Antonia Desplat). Sons of Anarchy seemingly closed the book on Jax Teller with its 2014 series finale, but Charlie Hunnam is not ruling out a return to that world in some capacity.
The franchise created by Kurt Sutter remains alive and kicking, thanks to Mayans M.C., which recently secured a pickup for Season 5.
If you watch Sons of Anarchy online, you know Jax Teller died in the series finale, but the actor is working on ways to bring the character back.
