Chicago – The names “Tj & Dave” are legion in the Chicago entertainment scene. The improvisation duo – T.J. Jagodowski and David Pasquesi – are improv performers who heighten the status of the city as a comedic destination. Now they’re featured in a indie TV pilot that will premiere at SXSW 2024 entitled “Bettendorf Talks.”
The show – produced by Shane Simmons and directed by Jack C. Newell – is a sharp and smart “show within a show” and a workplace comedy regarding the newest (and most unlikely) local talk show to come out of the titular Midwestern Quad City. Hosted by the “has been” comedy duo T.J. Jagodowski and David Pasquesi (who star as caricatures of themselves), the two attempt to mount a hit show in search of a sliver in their former glory. Other featured performers include Tim Kazurinsky, Sadieh Rifal, Brian King. Cassie Kramer, Nnamdi Ngwe, Emma Pope and Ike Reilly.

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for The Irrational Season 1 finale “Reciprocity.”] After the events of The Irrational Season 1 finale, we have to see a different Alec (Jesse L. Martin) because he now has the answers he’s been after for years. As he, Marisa (Maahra Hill), Kylie (Travina Springer), Phoebe (Molly Kunz), Rizwan (Arash DeMaxi), and Rose (Karen David) discover, the bombing that left Alec scarred was to cover up one of Senator Sanford’s (James Tupper) staffers dying during one of his events a couple days earlier; she was one of the victims at the church. One of his war buddies, an FBI agent and Marisa’s mentor Bob Caswith (Garry Chalk), is Mathias—and was the one to kill Jace (Brian King). The tag of the finale takes us to six weeks later, with Rose kidnapped and thrown into a van, just after she gets off the phone with Alec. TV Insider turned to ...

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for The Irrational Season 1 Episode 10 “Bombshell.”] For most of the latest episode of The Irrational, we’re worried about what might happen to Alec (Jesse L. Martin) with Wes Banning (Ben Cotton), the man who planted the bomb in the church that scarred the professor, not only free but also holding him and his two assistants, Phoebe (Molly Kunz) and Rizwan (Arash DeMaxi) hostage—with another explosive. But after a couple of twists, it’s another character whose life is hanging in the balance at the end. Just before learning of Wes’ escape, Marisa (Maahra Hill) tells Jace (Brian King) she couldn’t stop thinking about who from Sanford’s campaign could have been the target if the bomb at the church had gone off when it was supposed to. Three people were supposed to be there at the time, and two are dead; the other one got lucky “or something else,...

The good news: Marisa (Maahra Hill) is probably getting close to solving the mystery of the church bombing that left her ex-husband Alec (Jesse L. Martin) scarred years ago. The bad news: We can only deduce that because someone has bugged her house! The latest episode of The Irrational ended with Marisa telling Jace (Brian King) that though their suspect, Senator Sanford (James Tupper), had been up in the polls and therefore had no reason to bomb the church in hopes of getting the sympathy vote, it’s possible that someone from his team who had been designated for clean-up of his campaign event was the target. But as she showed him the space she’d made for him in her closet—after being hesitant when he brought up the subject earlier—we saw that someone was listening in. Below, Hill talks about that, Marisa’s complicated feelings for both Jace and Alec,...

The person behind the bombing at the church that left Alec (Jesse L. Martin) scarred may be closer to home than he would have ever expected, as he finds out in TV Insider’s exclusive sneak peek of the February 5 episode of The Irrational. He’s surprised to hear that Marisa (Maahra Hill) and Jace (Brian King) are going to meet with Senator Sanford as part of their new lead in the ongoing case. It was at the end of the last episode that Jace pitched the possibility of his involvement as something “irrational” to Marisa. Before the bombing, the best polls had Senator Sanford in a deadheat with his opponent, and at worst, he was three points down. “But after the bomb, the Black community turns out huge, and the man wins by five points,” Jace said. It’s far-fetched, but given that none of the other theories have panned out,...

If something doesn't seem right, Mercer is on it and will uncover the truth come rain or come shine.
If there's anything The Irrational has proved in the two episodes it has aired, it's not dull as far as the cases it tackles are concerned.
One can expect an exciting premise for every case, and the investigation until a solution is found is also quite interesting.
The show doesn't seem to be in a hurry to flesh out most of its characters, but as long as they keep delivering these kinds of cases, it is worth dedicating someone's 10 p.m. on Sundays to see what new they have cooked up.

Director Nia DaCosta and producer Jordan Peele resurrect the Candyman in this part-sequel, part-reboot of the 1992 cult classic. Taking several cues from the original film, it’s an intelligent and provocative horror, though straight-up slasher fans may be a little disappointed.
Bernard Rose’s 1992 film was an adaptation of a Clive Barker short story (The Forbidden), which cleverly relocated the action from London to Chicago. It also turned Tony Todd’s titular villain into a terrifying figure of vengeful violence, who could be summoned by uttering his name five times while standing in front of a mirror.

“Candyman,” the 1992 slasher movie starring Tony Todd as a vengeful specter in a floor-length fur-lined coat, with a hook for a left hand and a devoted swarm of killer bees, was an urban-legend horror film that was ahead of its time but also, just maybe, a little too much of its time. Todd’s scowling ripper started off as an enslaved person’s son, Daniel Robitaille, who in the late 1800s was a successful artist. But then he had a relationship (and fathered a child) with a wealthy white ingenue whose portrait he’d been commissioned to paint. Her father hired a lynch mob to go after him. The mob tore off his hand and covered him in honey, and a swarm of bees stung him to death. Candyman is the violent ghost he became.

Don’t say his name.
Universal and MGM released a terrifying new trailer for Nia DaCosta’s supernatural slasher film, hitting theaters on Aug. 27, 2021.
The trailer gives a backstory to the classic Candyman character, who is said to be an innocent man killed by police after being suspected of putting razor blades in kids’ candy.
“Candyman ain’t a ‘he.’ Candyman is the whole damn hive,” Colman Domingo says in haunting narration in the trailer.
Serving as a “spiritual sequel” to the 1992 horror pic of the same name, “Candyman” follows visual artist Anthony McCoy (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) and his girlfriend, art gallery director Brianna Cartwright (Teyonah Parris), as they move into the newly gentrified Cabrini-Green neighborhood of Chicago. When McCoy learns about the tragic true story of Candyman, he begins incorporating the vengeful spirit — summoned if someone says his name into a mirror five times — into his art, unlocking a...

Funded by Turismo de Portugal, the country’s shoot cash rebate aims to increase Portugal’s international visibility. Secretary of State for Tourism Rita Marques stresses that tourism is a key driver of sustainable growth, job creation and foreign investment, as well as promoting Portuguese and European cultural values: “That’s why we have created one of the most competitive film production incentive systems in Europe, especially oriented to those projects that can bring economic social, and environment value and positive impact to the world.”
Portugal boasts the highest number of sunny days in Europe and greener landscapes than much of Southern Europe. Crews are skilled, multi-lingual and offer highly competitive rates.
The major diversity of natural and cultural heritage within a relatively small country means that shoots can access a wide variety of locales within relatively short distances.

It’s been over 20 years since Hollywood evoked the vengeance-fueled specter of horror franchise Candyman, but the hiatus is coming to an end. With Hollywood’s reboot/remake epoch showing no signs of slowing down, and the buzz surrounding Blumhouse’s recent Halloween sequel/reboot, it appears that the Candyman’s cinematic rebirth is nigh.
Jordan Peele and his Monkeypaw Productions have conjured a new Candyman manifestation. Nia DaCosta (Little Woods) directed the film off a screenplay by Peele and Win Rosenfeld. The film is a “spiritual sequel” that “returns to the neighborhood where the legend began: the now-gentrified section of Chicago where the Cabrini-Green housing projects once stood.”
The project arose after the rights—originally held by the now-defunct PolyGram Filmed Entertainment and distributed by Tri-Star—recently became available. MGM will produce with Monkeypaw, with Universal Pictures set to distribute.

John Cleese on the set of ‘The Naked Wanderer’
When Callan Durlik wrote the character of a media mogul in romantic comedy The Naked Wanderer, he thought of John Cleese but doubted the Fawlty Towers star would be gettable.
With the enthusiasm of a first-time feature writer-producer, Durlik sent a synopsis to Cleese, who then asked to see the script.
Two days later Cleese was in. The Perth-based writer subsequently spent two days with the Englishman in his London office, workshopping lines and bouncing ideas.
He filmed all his scenes in London, playing Brian King, the uncle of Cameron King (Durlik), whose best mate Jake (Angus McLaren) decides to walk 4,000 km up the coast of Western Australia, clad only in a loin cloth.

Thrillers stand out as the genre of the day, with three of the ten projects promising something spooky.

Project won 2nd prize at New Series for Cartoon Network Latam, a contest hosted by Santiago Chile’s toon-market Chilemonos, and was pitched at Pitching Sessions Kids at Rio Content Market.
“The idea is that an everyday life object hides a world full of fun and fantasy. Who dwells in the windows, the olives, the staples?” says Caramba’s producer Marilina Sánchez.
